State of the TAM - 12th Dec
True North is coming soon!

Somerset would like to re-iterate. He is NOT an elf and he is OFFENDED at the suggestion.
I also have a cold, the first of 2024, and I am not enjoying the experience! Thus last week’s missed newsletter, it was that and putting up Christmas that did me in. It is better than the time I had Swine Flu at Christmas though. That was unpleasant.
Pupdate of the WeekThese two are lucky they are cute. They’ve gotten into the habit of waking me up in the wee hours so they can go out for their business.

This book isn’t going to be out until NEXT Christmas. That is Christmas 2024. That is twelve months away! But….

First Christmas song of the season. I love this song. No-one before or since has gone this hard on Little Drummer Boy.
…are they even outsourcing the panopticon of predictive, draconian pyschic law enforcement measures to AI now? Will it never end?!
Seriously? This doesn’t sound a bit Minority Report to anyone else? Does AI really exist? Or do we just have pyschics floating in a gene tank somewhere?
When Will A.I. Be Smart Enough to Thwart Violence? And do we really want it to?
Our world has long been filled with cameras peering out over streets, malls, and schools. Many have been recording for years. But for the most part, no one ever looks at the footage. These little devices, perched on shelves and poles, exist primarily to create a record. If something happens and someone wants to learn more, they can go back.

State of the TAM - 29 Nov

December is almost upon us. The gritters are on the roads. The freezers in the supermarkets are LOUSY with turkey. I’m INSUFFERABLE with seasonal spirit. Like, small children have - more than once - gotten excited when they mistook me for Mrs Claus.
It’s the red boots and red coat.
……the santa hat.
Maybe the dogs in Christmas themed hoodies!
Anyhow, this year I ALSO have a Christmas book out. So…. Don’t expect me to be less weird!
Oh and this is my previous Christmas book.

Very different books though!
In less festive news Izzy had to go to the vet today. She has an anal gland infection, so that was all cleaned out and now she’s got a fibre supplement, painkillers, and antibiotics. Poor wee mite. She’s very clingy tonight, but seems to be feeling better!
Pupdate of the WeekOut!

Home!

Jack Forrest agrees to accompany some friends on a Caribbean cruise just before Christmas. But he’s sharing a cabin with a friend of his friends so he won’t meet his roommate until he boards the ship.
Bart Chadwick is interested in Jack as soon as he sets eyes on him, but it doesn’t seem like the feeling is mutual. They’re rooming together, so maybe things will change.
Friendly bar waiter Gabriel fancies himself a matchmaker and sees a spark between Jack and Bart at the LGBTQ meet-up. Can he help them find love at first—or second—sight?
OK, this is kinda weird (me, not the book :D) but while I think R.J is awesome… Mostly I saw these and thought my friend Jenn would have LOVED them. So here you go, Jenn would have loved them books!
This is relevant to True North - but you’ll have to read it to find out how!

Everything is cooler in space! Including the ways that the human body breaks down in new and mortifying ways. I read this old SF series…sourced from library books and haunting the local used book store in the hopes that whoever had brought in the rest of the series would drop the rest off…about a space hospital.
It was AWESOME. (Had a quick google. Sector General! It was really cool!)
The Bodily Indignities of the Space Life
As an incubator of life, Earth has a lot going for it, something we often fail to appreciate fully from within its nurturing bounds. Merely sending probes and rovers to the moon and Mars won’t do. For various reasons — adventure! apocalypse! commerce! — we insist upon taking our corporeal selves off-world too. Multiple private companies have announced plans to put hotels in space soon. NASA is aiming to 3-D-print lunar neighborhoods within a couple of decades. And while it will probably take longer than that to build and populate an outpost on Mars, preparations are being made: This summer, four NASA crew members began a 378-day stay in simulated Martian housing at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
This is me! Well, similiar hair and anxieties! She’s obviously cooler :D
I always worry I’m not reading Jax’s boundaries right, but he does - on the rare occasions he doesn’t want to inhabit my sinuses - get up and walk away if he wants to. Izzy is not as boisterous in her affection usually…but she’ll sometimes charge up and slap you on the bum to come down and let her love her.
No really. She runs up behind you, jumps up, and thumps her paws on your bum. Cute, but occasionally surprising!

Ever since ghostwriter Jason Burke ended up in loco parentis for his orphaned niece, Mallory, he’s been trying. He goes to parent/teacher events, and he makes packed lunches, so he definitely didn’t mean to forget about Christmas. He just hasn’t celebrated it since he left home under a cloud years ago.
Put on the spot, Jason makes the snap decision to take Mallory to see where he and her father spent their Christmases as kids. The last thing he expects is to run into Tommy, his ex—ex-best friend, ex-boyfriend—who is still living in town… and working as a sheriff’s deputy.
It’s hard to avoid someone in a small town—and maybe Jason doesn’t want to. He got Mallory a Christmas, and maybe now it’s time to get himself a Christmas boyfriend. But first, he owes Tommy some explanations.

ALSO one from my dearly missed friend Jenn Moffatt. She’d be chuffed to know that people were reading it this year.

Dealing with the unexpected loss of his mother isn’t how carpenter Steve Browning planned to spend his Christmas. Hoping her costume jewelry can bring some happiness to others, he takes it to the local community theater, where he runs into his first love, Troy Baxter.
Troy’s trying to help his sister put on a gender-fluid version of A Christmas Carol, but no one on the cast or crew knows which end of a hammer to hold let alone use a power tool. Then a face from the past brings a present-day miracle… one that could lead to the happy future they both thought they gave up back in high school.

STATE OF THE TAM- 15 November
I am genuinely flummoxed by the fact it’s nearly 2024.
Of course, I was talking to my friend the other day about wild it is she’s been in her new house nearly four years now! It feels like it’s only been maybe a year.
Seven.
She’s been in her new house seven years. Near eight, in fact. I genuinely have no idea about the passage of time anymore. It’s a problem.
Not for me, really. It’s a pleasant eternal now and hazy recently. Other people are probably going to get exasperated at SOME point though!
ANYHOW!

Don’t forget that True North is available for pre-order. If you like your Christmas reading just that wee bit weird, we got you :D. Plus this contains some of my favorite scenes to write ever!
Oh, and I’m still working on the website. The branding is finished though! Check it out!

I haven’t been online a lot the last few weeks. There’s a lot going on and much of it requires driving places (I am fine before anyone worries :D but I did have to drive through Storm Debi the other day and that needs some recovery!).
Give me a week and I’ll get back on cute puppies track!

Must Read of the WeekWith time running out, can Tobias and Malik find a way to be together forever or are they destined for a lonely Christmas?
Finding an alien cyborg in the town park wasn’t something Tobias Prince figured on. He was only taking a breather from family drama when he discovered the spaceship hiding. He hadn’t counted on the giant robot following him home either.
But when Malik Io took off his powersuit and revealed the person inside, Tobias was smitten.
Malik Io crash landed on a planet distant from his own. His only hope at survival is reliant on the kindness of strangers. When he meets a young man tired and exhausted, he is struck by Tobias’s reluctant kindness. He knows that anything more than friendship is dangerous, considering that remaining on Earth is dangerous to his health, but Malik can’t help falling for Tobias.
With Christmas on its way, Malik and Tobias succumb to the nature of Christmas, bonding over Christmas baking, celebrating the town’s Light Up night and decorating a tree with friends and fall in love, despite knowing their time is limited.

Internet Sleuths Want to Track Down This Mystery Pop Song. They Only Have 17 Seconds of It
Got a few seconds? Then lend your ears — you might just have the answer to a question that has perplexed forensic audio obsessives for years.
Before the days of apps like Shazam, trying to identify an unfamiliar song was a team effort. WatZatSong, a social network dating back to 2006 (the early days of Web 2.0) facilitated that process on a global scale. Users could upload tracks that had stumped them, and crowdsource guesses about where it had come from. Some mysteries were swiftly solved; others were tougher to crack. But it wasn’t until 2021 that WatZatSong received what would become its most infamous and enduring submission, from a contributor in Spain going by the handle “carl92.”
The file is labeled “Pop – English,” indicating the genre and language. “Mid 80s, Bad quality. (Everyone Knows That),” wrote carl92, offering an estimate of when the song might have been recorded. “Everyone Knows That” is an interpretation of a lyric heard in the clip. “I rediscover[ed] this sample between a bunch of very old files in a DVD backup,” carl92 explained in a followup comment. “Probably I was simply learning how to capture audio and this was a left over.”
I am EVER SO SLIGHTLY colorblind. Pinks are hit and miss for me, but I still like them. Look how pretty this is? I love the shading of the skull and the way the roses/leaves make it look like hair. Or maybe horns?
Either way, it’s gorgeous!

One day I will do a book that needs a good map in it!

I have very conflicting feelings about Halloween since I got a dog. I love the aesthetic of it, the general spooky vs spoopy vibes, and all the various Halloween stuff. At the same time I would burn it all down if it meant nobody would set off a bunch of fireworks and terrify my poor dog.
Sorry, not sorry!
Mind you, he might be terrified of fireworks but he loves trick or treaters. He just sat up at the gate and wagged his tail at them. It actually took his wee mind off the fireworks!
Anyhow!
I’m doing a revamp of my website. Don’t go look yet. It’s half done and covered in tarps! But I’ll give you guys first nod when it’s up and running.

I didn’t actually get many pics taken this week between feeling mildly hungover with jetlag still and the general ‘will someone set off a firework whenever we’re out’ anxiety.
So throwbacks!
Look how little she was! While two dogs are DEFINITELY enough for me, that little flappy floppy paw makes me go ‘ooooohhhh’.

Shout-Out of the Week
Billy “Brains” Brennan has achieved rock stardom in not just one, but two chart-topping bands, but events from his past have him convinced he’s living on borrowed time. Brains and his brothers-in-Hush are ready to take the last cross-country Warped Tour by storm...until the actions of two drunk dudes with bad attitudes set off a chain of events that leave him incapacitated...and face-to-face with a handsome stranger who inexplicably feels like home—and not the home Brains fled at sixteen.
Chief Petty Officer Paul McNally has spent his 25-year career as a Navy Corpsman responding to emergencies and caring for wounded soldiers. When fate has him in the right place to provide aid to a fallen rock star, it sends his life spiraling on a trajectory he never planned for. Instead of concentrating on his impending retirement and a second career, he’s now playing nursemaid to a fascinating younger man…and falling in love—a fact he can’t seem to figure out how to explain to his adult son.
A health scare, band drama, and pain from both their pasts threaten to end Brains and Paul’s fledgling relationship. Fate brought them together. It will take trust, honesty, and hope to keep them together.

I would 100% be Keegan in this situation…although no-one would want me to sing!
Covers of the WeekI would not even try to design these covers. I get it, they look good. However, doing something grainy/murky like this makes it wild easy to go too far and your cover ends up flat and muddy to read.
These ones are a…clean grey, despite the ‘noise’ and the pops of red are just the rest amount of vivid. They also really capture a specific era of psychic/stalker/creepy monster suspense movies for me.
Like look at Watcher with Keanu Reeves:

Or Cracker with the late, great Robbie Coltrane:

I love the ‘Humans are Space Orcs’ threads from Tumblr, so this delighted me. (There’s a whole Stabby the Roomba Rear Admiral storyline.)
Also working at the South Pole sounds TERRIBLE. I have heard that there have been slap fights in research stations like this one over people spoiling books and stuff. So Roomba wars are probably a good way to get the energy out.

I’m baaaaaack!
First off the bat…Check this out!

Despite what his co-workers say Belling, Montana paramedic Dylan Holly does not hate Christmas.
It’s just that as an ex-foster kid he learned early on that Christmas just didn’t have much relevance to his life. He’s seen no evidence since then that he’s wrong.
That said, if Santa ever delivered a six-foot plus wall of hot muscle under his tree he’d be willing to reconsider. He’s even sourced an available one locally in the taciturn Somerset North and his impossibly blue eyes.
So really, at this point the ball is in Santa’s court.
There’s just one problem. Well, just one to start with anyhow. The battered, dying man someone dumped from a height onto Dylan’s car outside the Just-as-High, Somerset’s bar. He gave Dylan an old, well-worn watch and begged him to keep it safe.
Now Christmas is relevant to Dylan’s life in the worst way. The Winter Court has loosed their Wolves on the world and Dylan is on the run with Somerset North. A man who seems to know a lot more about what is going on than a Montana bar owner with exceptional shoulders should.
It turns out that Santa is missing, presumed dead. And the key to the hotly disputed succession crisis is a foster kid who never celebrated the season.
Look, I think I’m funny and that’s what matters! :D So yes, Christmas Urban Fantasy novella coming from your’s truly. I aimed for somewhere between Sting in the Tail and Miracle on 34th Street.
Anyhow!
Wow! GRL 2023 was a success, I think? It’s hard to say yet. There is just so much going on at your standard GRL, from you get up until you drag yourself to bed, that it’s hard to come to a conclusion about the success and or lack thereof until you’ve had a while to let it settle! End of the day, though, I got to hang out with some good friends and made some new friends.
So who could complain about that?
I also had the most AMAZING SUSHI! If you in the area then Oh Yummy Sushi in Portsmouth-Norfolk is the best place to go. It’s this dinky little place with the best menu and I ate until I thought they were going to have to roll me out of there.
(Picture from their facebook! I was too hungry to take photos :D)

Mind you, the flights were exhausting. I had only started to recover and it was back on the plane to head home. Look, mad scientist types, I would FULLY ACCEPT the technical death of my flesh carapace and my intelligence downloaded into a cloned skin shape in return for not having to sit on a plane breathing recycled farts for six hours.
Call me!
Pupdates of the WeekI think they missed me :D

They were certainly ready to wow this morning in their fancy Halloween jumpers! (That’s my mum in the side!)

Welcome, Traveler, to Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries!
What you see before you is no mere vagabond circus. Indeed, our show is full of wonders and delights that will leave you breathless, but whether that is with amazement or dread depends entirely upon you. We are unlike any other band of creatures you have ever encountered -- and you few brave souls who choose to step beyond your mundane expectations and join us may witness sights beyond your wildest imaginings.
So sit back, relax, and let us entertain you. For time and worlds are fleeting, but each soul has a tale to tell.
For centuries beyond count, Errante Ame has taken his Carnival of Mysteries from world to world and across times, never staying in one place too long lest his great enemy discover his location. Along the way he has accumulated friends and built a family of sorts among his ragtag band of performers, yet he doesn’t dare let anyone get too close to protect them from becoming a target as well. He stands apart, an outsider even among those closest to him, concealing his true nature.
Even from the man who has somehow come to mean more to him than his own life.
The Carnival is all Rafe Harper has ever known. Plucked as a toddler from the remains of a destroyed village on a world he doesn’t remember, he was adopted by Calliope, the Tattooed Lady, and raised among the performers. As an adult, he was given the position of Ringmaster by Errante -- though he secretly longed for far more from the enigmatic leader of the Carnival. Despite all the wonders he has seen, Rafe stayed with the Carnival to remain close to Errante, wondering if someday he could break through Errante’s walls and finally reveal how he truly feels.
But unbeknownst to either of them, a traitor lurks among their friends, and unless Rafe can discover the secret of his past, he stands to lose Errante, the Carnival, and perhaps his very soul.
Gods and Monsters is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries Series. Each book stands alone, but each one includes at least one visit to Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries, a magical, multiverse traveling show full of unusual acts, games, and rides. The Carnival changes to suit the world it’s on, so each visit is unique and special. This book contains a mysterious hero, a lonely wanderer, a vengeful god, and a guaranteed HEA.

Cover of the WeekHow cool are these! I love the graphic element of the design and the strong colors, which all stand out well against the clean yellow of the title. My favorite is Shoot the Moon, it is a really compelling cover, I think.

I read these religiously ever year. One year I was on holiday and I spent the night before Halloween tucked up in a single bed reading ghost stories in a massive old, isolated apartment block that had been an insane asylum and before that a military hospital during World War II. There were about fifteen apartments and exactly two of them were inhabited.
Scared the beejeezus out of myself, I tell you!

When I had just turned 6 years old, my family moved from our home town to a larger suburb in a state several hours away. I was still 5 when my parents took me with them to look at the house they would end up buying, and while we were walking through, the little girl whose parents were selling the house invited me to walk with her.
She was about my age or maybe a little older, and she seemed bossy in that big sister way. She showed me the room that would end up being my bedroom, and I remember her being very keen to show me the closet. She said a ghost lived in it, and I had to be very nice to the ghost or it would get me. I did not believe in ghosts (I was afraid of vampires, sharks, and cannibals) so I shrugged her off. She kept trying to make me go into the closet for a closer look, but I said no and went back to my mother’s side…

My new Irish passport is the same EU red as my old UK passport. I am obsessed with the idea that I’m going to get to Dublin and find I’ve got the wrong one. I don’t think custom’s agents would be moved by me sitting and crying…what do you think?
Since I’m NOT going to do that, I will be on a plane come Monday to GRL!I’m just loading up my books and playlists so I can have minimal social interaction while on the plane!

Sixteen long years behind bars. Almost half his life. But finally, freedom and a future Dominic can see. Yet as he steps into the world, a whispered threat shatters his hopes of a fresh start. He’ll never be able to stop looking over his shoulder.
Ren narrowly survives the most dangerous situation of his life, but at least his attackers think he’s dead. Spending the summer stuck on his brother’s archaeological dig isn’t his idea of fun, but it beats being fussed over by his mother. It’s as good a place as any to heal physical and mental scars, and he has plenty of those.
The roar of Ren’s motorbike is his lifeline, the one thing that makes him feel truly alive. But a moment’s lapse in concentration and he knocks Dominic off his feet. The accident brings together two damaged souls whose pasts won’t stay buried. With danger on their tail, hanging on to hope—and to each other—won’t be easy.
Join Dominic and Ren as they fight to keep the shadows of the past at bay and their future bright. In a world where love is fragile, two hearts learning to heal may just discover love is worth the risk.
WARNING
This is the story of two damaged men. One has suffered throughout his life, the other for a shorter period of time. It’s a story about holding onto hope, and it has a happy ever after. But…
Please note that one of the main characters in the story is in prison for murder. Sexual, physical and psychological abuse of a child is mentioned but no on-page detail is given. Sexual abuse of an adult is also mentioned but not shown on-page. Suicide is also mentioned in passing but not part of the story. There is some graphic violence.
Kind of expected that to explode!

A Wolf Winter Novel
The world ends not with a bang, but with a downpour. Tornadoes spin through the heart of London, New York cooks in a heat wave that melts tarmac, and Russia freezes under an ever-thickening layer of permafrost. People rally at first—organizing aid drops and evacuating populations—but the weather is only getting worse.
In Durham, mild-mannered academic Danny Fennick has battened down to sit out the storm. He grew up in the Scottish Highlands, so he’s seen harsh winters before. Besides, he has an advantage. He’s a werewolf. Or, to be precise, a weredog. Less impressive, but still useful.
Except the other werewolves don’t believe this is any ordinary winter, and they’re coming down over the Wall to mark their new territory. Including Danny’s ex, Jack—the Crown Prince Pup of the Numitor’s pack—and the prince’s brother, who wants to kill him.
A wolf winter isn’t white. It’s red as blood.
There are also some other great shifter romances in there! So check them all out.
And thank you to Queer Scifi for this review of Sting in the Tail
Flash Pupdate!Moore adds a horror-filled, dark fantasy tale to the Carnival of Mysteries universe. Sting in the Tail doesn’t shy away from the grit and gore of a chilling, intense, eerie story. As always, Moore’s characters are flawed and have rough edges, which makes them fascinating, and the connection between Ledger and Wren filled with snarky banter and a steamy romance. Scarily entertaining and worth the read!
It was Jax’s hydrotherapy today.
