You don't need a cabin in the woods

Have you ever seen the episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show in which he takes time off from work and goes to a cabin in the woods to write a novel? As you may guess, it doesn’t go well.

It is a romantic idea – take a week off and cloister yourself in a cabin in the woods to dedicate your time to writing your book.

Honestly, if you’re like me, you just don’t have time to do that. You need to fit writing your book into your day-to-day life.

But how?

Yesterday, I shared one strategy: Recycle content you’ve already created. However, not everyone has the content they need, and others just don’t like recycling content. If this is you, what other options do you have?

There are several, but today I’m going to share two that have worked very well for authors I know.

The first is to write in short bursts of about 30 minutes each day. That’s not a large time commitment and won’t take away from other things you need to do all that much. It also helps you avoid burnout, boredom, and overwhelm. Most entrepreneurs can find 30 minutes each day to work on their books.

And, since that’s not a lot of time, it is easier to pull the plug on distractions during that time. I’m sure your family can give you some peace for the time it takes to watch a sitcom.

Now, not all authors (and potential authors) have the time or the chops to write their own book. That’s where a ghostwriter comes in. This is not a cheap option (if you want a quality book), but it is a timesaving one. And, if you find the right writer, you’ll get a quality manuscript that feels like you wrote it.

And, if hiring a ghostwriter feels like cheating (yep, I’ve heard many people use that term in this context), you can hire an editorial partner who works with you to pull out your best stuff and polish it up so that it is high-quality.

With this week’s tips, it should be easy to step into being the 1% who finish a book. However, there are still some hurdles that potential authors may need to leap before they reach the finish line. Therefore, next week I’ll be talking about four Mind Goblins stopping you from writing a short book, and how to vanquish them. See you next week!

You can do magic

Someone once said that “Recycling turns things into other things. Which is like MAGIC.”

Well, if you’ve been creating content based on your expertise for any length of time, you are a Manuscript Magician in the making.

You don’t need to start your short book from scratch. You can mine this existing content you've created and repurpose it for your book!

Let me share an example. Let’s say that I wanted to write a short book about why short books are a great way to build your business. Do you remember what last week’s series of posts were about?

Yep, you got it: Why you should write a short book!

I could easily recycle some, possibly even all, of what I wrote to help me flesh out the outline I created for the book!

Once you’ve got your roadmap, you can look at all the content you’ve created so far:

• Blog posts
• Webinars
• Interviews
• Social media posts
• Emails you’ve sent
• Lead magnets you’ve created

And look for stuff you’ve already written that fits into that framework.

It is quite possible that you’ve already written your book and didn’t even know it!

Abracadabra! You’re a Manuscript Magician!

Now, if you find that you can’t use this past content, or it doesn’t cover all the points in your framework, or you’ve never been a content creator, I’ve still got your back. Tomorrow I’ll share some techniques you can use to write your book without recycling past content.

Be the turtle, not the rabbit

You’re familiar with the tale of the Tortoise and the Hare, right? We all know that the tortoise, who stayed the course and put one foot in front of the other won the race. While the rabbit, a clearly faster beast, lost.

Well, let me tell you the tale of the Turtle Author and the Rabbit Author.

Rabbit Author doesn’t like to be pinned down. She wants to connect with her muse and free-flow her words onto the paper.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. And often she gets stuck somewhere wondering how she wrote herself into this corner. Sometimes, she even has to toss a lot of what she has written because it no longer serves the whole of the book.

So, although she starts her book quickly, she often doesn’t finish. Or she takes two to three times as long to finish her project.

Now Turtle Author is different. She is methodical. She develops an outline of what she wants to see in her book, does some research to make sure she hasn’t missed anything, and only once the outline is clear, concise, and fulfills her brand promise while addressing what her readers are looking for, does she start to write the book.

But her writing process goes much more smoothly. Because she knows exactly what she needs to write and how it fits into the whole, she rarely wastes time going down writing rabbit holes.

That’s how you get your short book to do what you need it to do, and write it quickly, easily, and effectively: You follow Turtle Author’s example and develop a well-researched outline.

So, now that you’ve nailed your idea and created a roadmap to take you to the finish line, you need to develop your content. The next two days, I’ll be sharing some effective strategies for fleshing out your outline. See you tomorrow!

The idea is not the beginning

Earl Nightingale, known as the "Dean of Personal Development", once said, “Everything begins with an idea.”

However, in some ways, he’s dead wrong.

If you think the idea for your short book is where you start, you will more than likely write the WRONG book and not get the results you are seeking.

Your best client-attracting book ideas are grounded in your brand promise, aligned with your business goals, and speak to your ideal clients’ top-of-find pains, desires, or aspirations.

Therefore, the first step in writing an effective short book is to get super clear on your brand promise. And that, in turn, grows out of your values, mission, and vision.

Once you know what your brand promise is, you can identify clear goals for your short book. After that, pinpoint the pains, desires, or aspirations that you can write about that fulfill your brand promise and will create a book that moves you closer to your goals.

Here are the steps again:

1. Clarify your brand promise

2. Identify your goals

3. Pinpoint the pains, desires, or aspirations of your audience that match up to the first two steps

Now, and only now, can you develop an idea for your book that will attract ideal clients, boost your authority, and increase your influence.

So, Earl was right … this all started with an idea: The idea that you wanted to write a short book. But it did NOT start with the book idea itself.

Now that I’m more confident that you are on the right track with your book idea, we can move on to creating a roadmap that gets you from idea to finished manuscript. Stay tuned … I’ll be covering that tomorrow!
