The idea is not the beginning

Earl Nightingale, known as the "Dean of Personal Development", once said, “Everything begins with an idea.”

However, in some ways, he’s dead wrong.

If you think the idea for your short book is where you start, you will more than likely write the WRONG book and not get the results you are seeking.

Your best client-attracting book ideas are grounded in your brand promise, aligned with your business goals, and speak to your ideal clients’ top-of-find pains, desires, or aspirations.

Therefore, the first step in writing an effective short book is to get super clear on your brand promise. And that, in turn, grows out of your values, mission, and vision.

Once you know what your brand promise is, you can identify clear goals for your short book. After that, pinpoint the pains, desires, or aspirations that you can write about that fulfill your brand promise and will create a book that moves you closer to your goals.

Here are the steps again:

1. Clarify your brand promise

2. Identify your goals

3. Pinpoint the pains, desires, or aspirations of your audience that match up to the first two steps

Now, and only now, can you develop an idea for your book that will attract ideal clients, boost your authority, and increase your influence.

So, Earl was right … this all started with an idea: The idea that you wanted to write a short book. But it did NOT start with the book idea itself.

Now that I’m more confident that you are on the right track with your book idea, we can move on to creating a roadmap that gets you from idea to finished manuscript. Stay tuned … I’ll be covering that tomorrow!
