Why Worry? Well....
This weekend, I found myself living vicariously through other YA authors.
Meg Cabot
rocked the LA Times Festival of Books and nearby signings in pretty much the cutest outfit EVER, carrying the cutest purse ever. Plus, look at these shoes. I'm so jealous!

Then, Laurie Halse Anderson ran a half marathon in Central Park. Amazing! And I....well, I dealt with various babysitter issues, saw my daughter through either bad allergies or a bad cold, and worried about Bret Mich...

The Five!
1. Okay, so how GREAT was the Madonna Glee episode this week? I didn't get to watch it until last night, but once it began I was, like, totally lost in nostalgia. That's one of the bonuses of being a teenager when Madonna was first breaking out: I feel like I grew up with her. Also, since I am from the original MTV generation, I can remember every video for every song. So when "Like A Virgin" came on I was like, "Remember the lion?" and when they did "Borderline" I said, "Remember when she sp...

good things
It's Tuesday afternoon, and I'm just finished a REALLY long work day, which means I have exactly, like, two brains cells still functioning. To me, a good day of hard writing and/or revising is like an intense workout. You (i.e. me) always procrastinate a bit, dread starting, but then get lost in it and feel SO good when you're done. Plus, there's the same kind of good tired feeling you get after a good run. Which is different from bad tired you get when, say, your toddler is up at 3:30 am for...

LOL, etc.
Earth Day is this week, and in honor of the occasion, they were giving away a free reusable shopping bag at Target today. I know, I know. One bag is not that big of a deal. But while I try to be as green as I can, I have to say the One Big Change I've made in the last few years is that I bring my own bags everywhere, and the habit started a few Earth Days ago, when Whole Foods gave me a free bag and stopped using plastic ones. For awhile, I struggled with remembering them (note to self: bag i...

The Five!
1. Today is Tax Day, but it's just not like it used to be. Remember when you used to have to go pick up your forms at the post office, and then sit down and fill them out with your calculator, then go stand in line to make SURE they were postmarked by the 15th? Well, you used to have to do all that. Now, between internet and Turbo Tax, it's a much different ball game. It's still not a fun thing, though, especially when you have to wrap your mind around what you owe or have already paid. Perso...

Thanks to all of you who sent positive thoughts to my mom for her surgery. I was a nervous wreck on Monday---however, I am usually a nervous wreck, despite the circumstances---but everything went well, and she's now recuperating and resting comfortably. I went up to visit her today, and while I KNOW hospitals are healing places, I just feel like I've spent more than enough time at this particular one in the last few years. I mean, add it up: my mom got really sick before my daughter was born,...

Ten Miler, Tooty Tas, etc
This weekend was, in a word, nuts. Mostly because on Saturday morning, my husband and our friends Dana and Jason ran the Tarheel Ten Miler, a race that began on campus, snaked through town, and ended in Kenan Stadium, where they got to see themselves cross the finish line on the Jumbotron. (Well, Jason didn't, as he ran it "bandit" style, meaning he wasn't actually signed up and had to peel off before the end. So rogue, right?) The race began at 7:30, but we were all up at 5am to get ready. A...

The Five!
1. Thanks to everyone who wrote in with such positive stories about hip replacements for me to pass onto my mom. I cut and pasted them into a big email and sent it off for her to read over and over again as the surgery approaches. I'll keep you guys posted, and may hit you up for some good thoughts at the time. No pressure, you know, just if you feel like it and have a moment.
2. Today I had an appointment with my OBGYN. He's a young guy, looks like he's barely thirty, if that, and he has sev...

books and such
I just have to say that it is like summer here, and even though I KNOW it's a tease, and we'll be back to normal spring behavior by this weekend, I am really happy about it. The only downside are the same ones of a real summer: ticks and pollen. We've all already gotten tick bites, which is just part of living in the country, and this morning I stepped outside to see the yard covered in what looked like a yellow fog. SO.MUCH.POLLEN. I want to sneeze just thinking about it. But, as you can pro...

Peeps and peeps
Happy Easter, on a day that began bright (actually dark) and early at 6am. Saturday night, I assembled my daughter's first true Easter basket, which is to say the first one with candy and chocolate and that she was actually aware might be coming. I am not crafty in the least, but thanks to CVS I procured a basket, some pink straw, a few plastic eggs, jellybeans, chocolate bunnies and Peeps. I also included stickers, a pen shaped like a cow, and a few other things that were not high in sugar o...
