stay
I'm back at home now, again, after a great week at the coast. Despite the scorching temperatures---the heat index was 110 one day, which in laymen's terms means that after a few minutes exposed to it you feel like you're going to burst into flames---we had a lovely time. Lots of swimming and eating and sleeping and laughing. My daughter proved herself to be a total pro in her little Puddlejumper flotation device, paddling around the pool while I looked on all choked up like a total sap. Sniff...

surfacing...
...just for a few moments. Although I am totally in vacation mode, so this entry might be entirely too mellow. You've been warned.
Greetings from NC coast, where we've been having a total estrogen fest the last couple of days. My husband had to work, so it's just been me, the toddler, and my sitter Krysta, who is a total rock star and has been with us for two of my baby's three years. Also along for this trip: entirely too many stuffed animals, including Bernard, a HUGE stuffed dog that I neve...

The Five!
1. Here's a question: how many is TOO many stuffed animals? I haven't actually taken a formal count of my daughter's collection, mostly because I am scared of the actual number. Uglidolls, Olivia, The Gabba Friends, Bernard the huge dog and George, the giraffe...these are only the top tier. There are so many others, cluttering the bed, her room, our lives. And yet, every time I sneak up there when she's out with my husband and cull a few from the group, putting them aside in a grocery bag and...

Summertime, and the living is....
Okay, so I'm feeling entirely lazy right now. Like summer has finally caught up with me. Heat, humidity, long, languid days...you win. You win! I can be productive for a couple of hours in the morning, but by afternoon my mind wanders and I can't get anything done. I have to remedy this before I start working on my revision again in the couple of weeks, or I am going to be in BIG trouble.
What's nice, though, is that it's not just me. At least, I don't think so. Everyone around here seems to b...

Whew....
I got back from vacation on Thursday night, but to be honest, I'm still playing catch up. This is mostly my fault. I basically ignored my work inbox like an ex-boyfriend for the last couple of weeks, and now I have to pay the price. Plus, since I have only a couple of weeks before I go back into revision mode, I decided I have to do all my mid-summer cleaning/organizing/throwing out of crap now. My household has been warned: if you sit in one place for too long, you will either be kept, tosse...

The Five!
1. So we're back, after a wild and wonderful week in Cape Cod with my extended family. Whew! The trip began with a four hour delay at the airport due to "maintenance issues" which did not EXACTLY give me a lot of faith in the plane when we finally got on it. However, after chasing my daughter up and down the terminal for hours, I was willing to take my chances. Then it was rental car, drive to the Cape, and finally, we were there. We had a really fun week playing with cousins, and eating lots...

recap
Get this: I just spent a half hour on the phone with an AT&T representative making adjustments to my wireless account. She was pleasant and incredibly competent and the entire exchange was painless and easy. Plus, I saved some money on my monthly bill. Can you even believe that? Me neither! I know you don't care, but just had to share. Miracles in customer service do happen!

I can't believe it's almost the end of June. What happened? You turn 40 and suddenly time starts flying? Or...maybe I've just been really busy. Think I'll go with that.
Things have been nuts lately. I'm working on the revision of WHAT HAPPENED TO GOODBYE while planning to leave for a family vacation, which means extra errands and To Do list items and everything else. This week we head up to Cape Cod, which I'm totally pumped about, to see my extended (i.e. HUGE) family and spend some quality t...

The Five!
1. Whew! It is really, really hot here today. By 10am it was 87 degrees. Watch out! And it's a sneaky heat, especially in the morning. My daughter and I went out to check on the garden at about 8:15, and I'm thinking, oh, it's a little steamy but not too bad. Ten minutes later, I'm dripping sweat, even though it doesn't feel that bad out yet. Then my husband comes home at noon and goes on a five mile run, even as I am shouting things like, "Danger! Heat stroke! Heat exhaustion!" at him as he ...

it's the humidity
Today, at lunchtime, my daughter and I stepped outside for a few minutes. It was 94 degrees, but---according to my weather station on my fridge---felt like 102. WHEW! Even if the calendar hadn't told us yesterday was the first day of summer, this made it clear. The heat is here. And so is the humidity.
There's this joke around these parts that the official N.C. state motto should be "It's not the heat, it's the humidity." Heat is bad, don't get me wrong. But heat paired with a wall of air that...
