The Five!

1. I just snuck back over to the house to get my phone charger. I say sneak because if my daughter sees me anytime between waking up from her nap and when the sitter leaves, she tends to want me to stick around. So I'm creeping past the back door and I glance outside. There she is, in her brand new bathing suit and her Gap baseball hat, about to go into the plastic pool we bought today. But right then, she was sharing a popsicle with her sitter Amanda, both of them smiling. If you've read thi...

inspiration

If there's one thing that I've learned by having a kid, it's how to be present. And let me tell you, I am NOT good at doing this. It's why I could never do yoga, or, um, calm down in any kind of way. My mind is always dashing out ahead, beating the starting gun, unable to stop even when it should. But factor a toddler into the equation, and forward thinking just doesn't work. She doesn't understand "later" or "sometime soon." It's either happening now, or it isn't. And if it isn't, that's usu...

Sundaze

It's Sunday afternoon, the clouds are rolling in, and it's supposed to start storming in a couple of hours. I have a salad to make, bills to pay, and about an hour left before my daughter returns from a play date with my cousin requiring my undivided attention. You know what that means: one, two, three....blog!

Okay, so that was a big lead up. Now what?

Oh, right. First off, a quick heads up about Along for the Ride, which will NOT be out in paperback this summer (I know, I know). However, we ...

The Five!

1. Yes, I've taken the leap and changed the name of this, my last entry of the week, because honestly I am writing it more and more often as I am now, on Thursday afternoon. What can I say? Fridays---unless I am out of town, like last week---are days when I am usually trying to work out, get my daughter fed, pack the diaper bag, answer a zillion emails and deal with my spastic dogs, all before I leave at around 9am. Trying to fit in a decent blog post was getting, well, impossible. So here I ...

I have to say, I have had just about the perfect Chapel Hill afternoon today. First, it was a gorgeous day, sunny and warm. Second, one of my favorite writers, Lee Smith, has a book of new and collected short stories out TODAY called Mrs. Darcy and the Blue Eyed Stranger . And finally, she was reading at one of my favorite bookstores, The Bull's Head on the UNC Campus, and I got to go. Score!

My friend Dana and I met on Franklin Street in front of the post office, which gave me major nostalgia...

gone and back again

It's Monday morning, and I'm sitting here watching the sun come up over my backyard. I had SO much fun in New York, but really, the best kind of vacation is when you're happy there and equally happy to come back home. Which I was.

I got in on Thursday around noon, had a great lunch with a friend, then got some shopping in on Fifth Avenue (hello, Longchamp store!) before dinner with my editor. Then, on Friday morning, I got up and headed down to Times Square to geek out at the GMA studios. Regu...

The Friday Five! (Really!)

1. Yes, it's Friday and I am actually updating right this very second. Although I'm going to keep it quick, because I'm here in New York and am very soon about to walk down to Times Square to try to get a glimpse of Sam Champion on GMA. So far, I've had such a fun time, missing home aside, AND I got some shopping done yesterday which was just, like, a great bonus. Today is lunch with my Penguin folks, then the YA Teen Author events tonight at the New York Public Library. For those of you who ...

I swear I am having one of those days where everything I do, technology-wise, seems to immediately self-destruct. My new phone suddenly won't sync with my computer (Oh, Centro, I miss you and your easy push-button Hotsync) I couldn't get my LJ client to start, and I am scared to even attempt to clean out my DVR in fear I'll blow it up entirely. My friend Lisa used to always say when things got wonky like this, Mercury must be in retrograde, but I don't have time to keep up with all that stuff...

Let there be (day)light....

So it's 5:18 as I write this, but without Daylight Savings Time it's actually 4:18. I've been thrown off all day, as I usually am: it normally takes me a couple of days to stop thinking in terms of what time it really is versus what the clock says and vice versa. But in the end, all the confusion is worth it, because, well, it's SO LIGHT outside at 5:18. Which is a small comfort when I'm up at six but it's actually five. Oh, there I go again....

Was there basketball happening this weekend? I t...

The Weekend Five!

1. Yes, so I'm contemplating a name change for this, the last entry of the week. It seems kind of wrong to keep calling this The Friday Five when I am now usually updating on Thursday night. But honestly, the Weekend Five doesn't have that same alliteration. How about The Final Five? (Actually sounds kind of morbid.) Or I could switch things up entirely and call it The Thursday Thrice, cutting down on my work in the process. (Three for the price of...three?) I'll keep mulling on it. If you ha...
