For me, this was a weekend of discovery. First, at Target yesterday, I found the one dollar section. I'd sort of glanced at it before, but it wasn't until Sasha and I were doing some early morning shopping that I actually stopped to check it out. I got stickers, some bunny ears for her for Easter, an Elmo book, some magnetized pads for the fridge, and some completely unnecessary other items that I totally would not have even looked at if they were regularly priced. I mean, I got her a plastic pi

The Friday Five!
1. Yesterday, I found out that Lock and Key is a finalist for a
Children's Choice Book Award
. This is very exciting for any number of reasons, but particularly because the finalists and awards are the result of voting by actual readers AND because I am in such awesome company (Stephenie Meyer, Meg Cabot, John Green and Suzanne Collins). Yay for some love for Lock and Key as well. Anyway, voting opens online and in schools, libraries and bookstores on March 16th. So stay tuned.

I am writing this from my parents' house, where I have fled in an attempt to try to get some work done for the first time this week. Monday my sitter was snowed out: today, the other has the flu. Which would be fine, if I had a baby who sat quietly and entertained herself. But I don't think such beings even exist. Even if they do, mine is not one of them. Nope, she's more the turn-your-back-for-one-second-to-answer-a-crucial-email-and-she's-upside-down-on-top-of-the-coffeetable type. She is draw

So it's Sunday afternoon as I write this, and it's cold and pouring rain outside. According to the weather reports, this rain will eventually turn to snow, possibly accumulating to 2-4 inches. All I can say is this: fine, February. You win.
Clearly, I annoyed the February gods with my gloat about the arrival of March today. Why else would it be about to SNOW when we had seventy degree weather just a couple of days ago? They do say March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb. I guess this

The Friday Five!
1. This weekend, February will be over and March begins. I know it's kind of mean, but I always seem to hold everything I hate about winter against February. Maybe because it's the last all-cold month (usually) and by then I'm sick of the season altogether. Maybe because it's just usually dreary, without much fun going on. Whatever the reason, we ain't besties. (If you really want to hate February, go listen to Dar Williams' song of the same name. It will put you into a downward spiral, like, in

As I write this, there is a painter on a ladder literally RIGHT outside my window. He's scraping, and I can hear him breathing, and talking on his phone from time to time, and chatting with the other painters below him on the deck. I've never written with such a close audience, but the weird thing is I am getting used to it. I have learned that with writing, I can get used to anything.

Okay, so I know I just updated yesterday. But last night I watched the finale of Confessions of a Teen Idol, and I must share.
I am embarrassed to say how much I like this show. I mean, LONGTIME readers of this blog will remember when I was really into this super-cheesy show called Starting Over, where they'd take women who wanted to Make Changes and Improve Themselves and put them in a house together with life coaches and goal lists and all kinds of self-esteem exercises. It was so much fun, o

So I'm up bright and early this morning, as usual, and since I didn't make it through the Oscars last night (or even very far in) I turned on the DVR to see who won. Just as they were about to announce the Best Actress winners, it cut the broadcast off. Whoops. I forgot to extend the taping, which is totally my fault because when have the Oscars EVER finished on time? D'oh! So I had to do the decidedly unglamorous alternative and read about the winners online. I mean, I know there will be LOTS o

1. I am writing this as I am on the phone with Apple support. Apparently, you can't register a Apple warranty online in NC, as they don't recognize us as a state. Or something. Whatever, they are playing "The Boys of Summer" while I am on hold, so it's all good. Although it's version by The Ataris, not Don Henley. But I get points for KNOWING it's the Ataris, right? Maybe I am not as old and out of date as I think.
