Playing the Fool
Okay, so today is April Fool's Day. Which means that if you are, like me, an incredibly gullible person, you have to incorporate an entire other step into your thought process for the next twenty four hours. Every single thing people say to me, I have to think: are they playing a trick? Think, Dessen! Think! Invariably, though, I fall for something, as I did for NPR's joke story about school mascots this morning. And I ALMOST fell for Gmail's new "autopilot" feature, which supposedly has techn

Okay, so I won't spend TOO much time talking about basketball this morning other than to say 1) Final Four! and 2) My bracket is pretty much shot. I think UNC is the only team I picked that is still in it. Of course, my husband, who pretty much picked at random, is doing just fine. Go figure.
In other news, I have LOTS of stuff to tell you about, so I'm just going to get right to it. First up, I am VERY excited to announce the official opening of Sarah-land. It's a new website and online communi

The Friday Five!
1. Yesterday, I decided I needed to do something frivolous. I had a morning to myself, a rare thing, and a list of To Dos longer than my arm. Get car inspected, go to bank/post office/drugstore/grocery store, you know the drill. I got the car done, then sat outside the inspection place, in the rain, contemplating. Going to run all my errands would make me feel good, in that I-got-things-done kind of way. But I feel like I am ALWAYS getting things done, and while that's good, sometimes, you need

Yesterday, a reader alerted me to this, a description from the TLC show Bringing Home Baby:
Beth and Mike can't wait to bring home their twins girls, Remy and Macy. When mom's C-section forces her to stay in bed, can dad handle baby duty alone with their two bundles of joy?
Remy and Macy? Can this be a coincidence, really? It seems unlikely, but I don't want to assume someone would actually name their kids after my narrators. Still: very cool.

The Return
Hello!
So I'm back, after a few days off spent on vacation and hanging with the family and good friends. This weekend, we headed up to Asheville, where we haven't been in ages, and it was gorgeous. We stayed in a bed and breakfast, ate at ALL my favorite restaurants (Barley's, Table, Early Girl Cafe) and spent most of our time chasing Sasha, who was obsessed with going outside. I guess it's a compliment to how nice Asheville is, but she did NOT want to be contained for any reason. It would be si

Yesterday, after almost five straight days of rain, the sun finally came out. It happened slowly: a bit of blue sky here, a shaft of sudden yellow light there. By late afternoon, the sky was clear and the sun shining, albeit faintly, but we still all went outside to bask in it. I have to give major props to you folks in Seattle and other mostly rainy climates: I don't know how you do it. I was DREAMING of sunshine, I needed it so bad.
In other news, a first for me the other night: I ate venison.

It rained ALL weekend here. Like a steady, cold rain, the kind that chills you the moment you even think about stepping outside. We were all a bit stir crazy. so thank goodness at least we had basketball to distract us. My Tarheels went down to Florida State on Saturday in a serious nail-biter, but it was still fun watching. Now, we move on to March Madness, and brackets, and more nail biting. We're a number one seed, which is great, but with the tournament, you never know what's going to happen

The Friday Five!
1. So this week, we have officially gone cold turkey off of ALL baby food. (And when I say we, I mean my daughter, FYI. Something about having children makes you start speaking of yourself as a group, like, all the time.) I know, I know. She's too old to even consider eating baby food anymore. But she really hardly eats ANYTHING else, so I've always just kind of reasoned that it was the only way to get vegetables and fruit in her. But no more. I am hardcore, all solids or bust. She is not liking

Thanks to everyone who wrote in to tell me that RuPaul's Drag Race is also airing on VH1. Good to know! Although I have to say, I love watching Logo, if only because the promos fro the other shows are so great. I mean, where else can you see scenes from an upcoming episode of a show about lesbian cruises? Come on.
In other news, I have to say I'm a little worried about Anoop Desai surviving on Idol this week. I know, I know, I swore off this show ages ago. But he's from Chapel Hill, like me, wen
