Women’s Pipeline Invitational
The Women’s Pipe Invitational pitted 2014 World Champ Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), Carissa Moore (HAW), Tyler Wright (AUS) and Bethany Hamilton (HAW) against each other in double-overhead-plus, windy conditions at Banzai Pipeline on the famous North Shore of Oahu for a specialty heat during the Billabong Pipeline Masters.
Bethany charged into a few massive barrels in very dangerous Pipeline surf. The barrels at Pipeline (the left) weren’t holding up very we’ll due to a bad strong wind direction. But that didn’t stop Bethany from throwing herself over the ledge into the biggest waves of the heat. She came in third place.

Turmeric & Ginger Juice Shots
TURMERIC & GINGER JUICE SHOTS
When I juice, the first thing I run through my juicer is Turmeric. I take it as a “shot,” then follow it leisurely with a glass of fresh juiced veggies and/or fruits.
Turmeric is soo good for our bodies! It is loaded with many healthy nutrients such as protein, niacin, Vitamin C, sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, and magnesium. It has antioxidant properties, can boost the immune system, and its anti-inflammatory properties are said to help reduce or prevent chronic inflammation. I want those health benefits!!
Because I don’t like the taste of Turmeric too much, and feel it overpowers, I sometimes combine Ginger & Turmeric juice, which mixes it up a bit. Or I add lemon juice.
Like turmeric, Ginger features anti-inflammatory and immune boosting effects. It also has great results in helping with digestion, nausea, and congestion! God sure knew what He was doing when He created these plants, didn’t He?
Personally, I like the flavor of Ginger in my fruit & veggie juice, but if you don’t you can “shot” it, like I do with the Turmeric.
To make the flavor of your Turmeric or Ginger shot more enjoyable, add Lemon juice!
This holiday season, you can also try this warm turmeric or ginger tea on a cozy night.
Or if you’re traveling, take this juice shot up a notch with this powerful tonic: Pre-Travel Juice Shots

Oil Pulling with Coconut Oil
OIL PULLING WITH COCONUT OIL
I started oil pulling a few years ago, and I do it regularly. In fact, I pulled this morning!
Oil pulling is “an age-old remedy that uses natural substances to clean and detoxify teeth and gums. It has the added effect of whitening teeth naturally and evidence even shows that it is beneficial in improving gums and removing harmful bacteria!” – Wellness Mama
There are thousands of different types of bacteria in the mouth. The bacteria in the mouth stick to the surface of our teeth and form what we know as “plaque.” If plaque gets out of hand it can cause all sorts of problems. The way oil pulling works is simple. Authority Nutrition tells us, “When you swish the oil around your mouth, the bacteria ‘get stuck’ in it and dissolve in the liquid oil. Basically, you remove a large amount of the bacteria and plaque in your mouth each time you do this.”
Oil pulling is kind of like using an oil as mouthwash, and it’s so effective!
Here’s how to do it:
1. Put about a tablespoon of oil in your mouth. (Organic Raw Coconut Oil is what I prefer because it has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, and it tastes good!)
2. Swish the oil around your mouth for 15-20 minutes. (Start with 5 minutes and work up to 20. “The longer you pull, the more bacteria you’ll remove” – Web MD). If your jaw starts aching, slow down and relax it. All you need to do is GENTLY swish, push, and suck the oil through your teeth.
3. Spit out the oil, then brush your teeth.
4. Smile!

Bethany and Alana Keiki Classic 2014
The Bethany and Alana Keiki Classic took place Saturday, October 25 at their home break of Pine Trees, Hanalei, Kauai. The surf competition brought out the local community for a full day of surfing, beach games and the opportunity to interact with Bethany and Alana – everyone walked away with smiles on their face.
It was a beautiful day at Pine Tree’s with light winds and 2 foot swell, perfect conditions for all ages and for the kids to have fun in the water. The contest was formatted differently this year with looser judging, each contestant surfed in 2 heats and they were ranked on the best wave to advance to the finals. The goal of the surf contest was to create a relaxed, fun environment for the kids to practice their skills and compete against their friends and peers.
Bethany’s husband Adam ran beach games for the kids in-between heats; both Bethany and Alana couldn’t resist playing along with all of the kids. “We had a lot of fun games and the kids are all into it, its fun just seeing the community and families’ coming together and hanging out, its not a serious contest, but just having fun” says Hamilton.
“All we wanted was for the kids to have fun and enjoy the event and to enjoy being with each other” says Blanchard. “My favorite part of today was interacting with the kids and playing dodge ball and tag, and just being a kid again.”
Bethany received some great submissions for her essay contest, competitors were asked to submit an essay describing who the most influential person is to them and what they have learned. The entries were so great Bethany had a hard time choosing just two winners so three girls were awarded for their great essays! Alana also awarded four groms with her very own surfboards and GoPros, these kids emulated great sportsmanship throughout the day. Lastly, Rip Curl also ran a photo of the day contest via Instagram, and the winner of the day was also awarded with a GoPro! Check out all the Instagram posts from the event through #KeikiClassic.
A special thank you to Hanalei Surf Co and Rip Curl for helping put on such a great community event! Also, thank you to all of the companies who contributed prizing to stoke all the kids out – FlexFit, SPY, Cobian, Reef, GoPro, Future Fins, Ormco, and Sticky Bumps.
