Health Tip: Floss Your Teeth!

I like to keep a few one-hand flossers in my purse. I floss when driving or waiting around!

While I’m no dental expert, I have learned over the years that flossing is a key part of your oral hygiene routine. Flossing ensures that the tight spaces between your teeth (where the toothbrush doesn’t reach) and the gap between the base of the teeth and the gums, get clean. Damon Smile, my braces provider, would agree that proper dental care, including regular flossing, can do more than keep your smile beautiful and healthy. A healthy mouth will contribute to your overall health and wellness.

So, my tip is simple this month — FLOSS your teeth!

Nick Vujicic and Bethany on Kauai

On March 25, Nick Vujicic and Bethany Hamilton gave their touching testimony at Ha Coffee Bar, Lihue, Hawaii. This gathering was not a big event but an exclusive, intimate event limited only to 85 individuals. Both Bethany and Nick shared testimonies of overcoming by the hope and strength which they have found in God.

The event raised awareness for their respective non-profit organizations, Friends of Bethany Hamilton and Life Without Limbs.

The Garden Island published a great article on the event: “Break through your fears” (Read Here)

And CrossMap also covered the event: “Inspiring Testimony of Bethany Hamilton and Nick Vujicic in Hawaii” (Read Here)

Surfing with one arm: How does she do it?

We all know Bethany Hamilton as the surfer girl from Kauai who survived a shark attack when she was just 13-years old. From magazines to books to major motion pictures, her story has been told on myriad platforms, but never before has she shared exactly how she is able to surf with just one arm.

From battling through the shorebreak to taking off late on overhead waves, it’s remarkable to watch her in action. This is how she does it.

2014 Pipeline Women’s Pro Champion!

March 20, 2014 // It was another waiting game for the Surf n Sea Pipeline Women’s Pro, however as time wound down with only one day remaining in the waiting period, a nice spring swell arrived to call on the ASP one star event. The 3-5ft conditions gave the ladies enough face to pull off some hard snaps and to find a few cover ups. Bethany Hamilton kicked off the first heat on fire, pulling some giant snaps in both directions and snagging a little barrel to take home the Banzai Sushi award for the best tube ride of the day.

After dominating each of her heats, Bethany claimed her first event title in 8 years when she took the top spot at the Banzai Pipeline contest in Oahu, Hawaii.

“It was fun; it wasn’t exactly Pipe, but better than most spots around the world that I surf in heats,” Hamilton said after her win. “I usually lose, so this was great. In my first heat, I got a little barrel and I wasn’t even expecting it, but I always keep my eye out because you never know out here. I kind of tucked in and I made it out, and that was a pleasant surprise.”

Health Tip: Sunflower Sprouts

Sprouts!

We LOVE sprouts! My favorite are Sunflower Sprouts.

Sunflower Sprouts have a dense texture – kind of like fresh spinach. They are slightly nutty in flavor and so green and crunchy. Addictive flavor!

Not only are they delicious, but Sunflower sprouts are rich in Vitamins A, B, C and E, Calcium, Chlorophyll, Iron, Magnesium, Niacin, Phosphorus, Potassium, Amino Acids, and Protein! Which means they are REALLY nutritious for our bodies!

Sunflower Sprouts can be grown at home too. Here’s an online instructional: How to Grow Sunflower Sprouts from Whole Sunflower Seeds

Try other spouts too! Like clover and alfalfa. Sprouts are great in salads and smoothies, on sandwiches and wraps.

Alana Surfer Girl show features Keiki Classic

I grew up surfing on Kauai with Alana Blanchard, and we love giving back to the local kids through our Keiki Classic surf competition!

Our 2013 Bethany & Alana Keiki Classic was featured on Alana’s “Surfer Girl” show on Network A. Watch the Episode:

Alana Surfer Girl (Season 3, Episode 6): Childhood friends and pro surfers Alana Blanchard and Bethany Hamilton reunite at home on Kauai to throw the Keiki Classic—a surf contest in Hanalei Bay for local groms. Alana and Bethany grew up in Kauai surfing together, competing in local contests and pushing each other to be better surfers. They don’t get to spend as much time together nowadays, but they’re still the best of friends and have so much fun putting on the Keiki Classic together with their sponsors Rip Curl and Hanalei Surf Co. See what life is like as a grom on Kauai including footage of Alana and Bethany surfing as kids—Omg!
