Roses

Maybe it’s a slightly obvious question since I have one arm, but I think it’s one that many women, and even men in a different tone, face whether they are asked directly or if they’re asking themselves. The question is actually larger than how we view ourselves with our imperfections or flaws… its really about how we think about physical beauty and ability.

Meet Sarah Hill

She’s even portrayed by Carrie Underwood in “Soul Surfer,” the Hollywood movie about my story. Sarah was my youth leader who encouraged me so much in my young faith and who was instrumental in helping me through the tragedy I faced at thirteen. Sarah is a Christian speaker and a youth leader on the island of Kauai. She is a founding board member and the present Executive Director...

Who Has Time For That?

Written by my hubby Adam I’m thankful for all of those roles, and in order to maintain my sanity, I thrive with some form of physical workout or labor built into my daily routine. But, I often have trouble finding the time or motivation to do so. So many things pull at my mind and time in different directions that if I do have an opening in my schedule I just want to veg out and watch Netflix or...

Let’s Abandon the “Search for Perfect Happiness”

To be honest, I don’t believe we can have perfect happiness. Apart from God, I’m sure there is no “perfect”…and I don’t think happiness is the answer either. But isn’t that what we are often fooled into desiring? Our actions often seem to reflect that we are striving for perfect. And why wouldn’t we? The messages are everywhere… The magazines are all...

30 Ways to Reduce Plastic Waste

There’s currently about 8 billion tons of plastic wreaking havoc on our environment, oceans, animals and our own health. We all need to do something about it. That’s why I’m teaming up with Corkcicle for a 30-day #NoPlasticChallenge! I’m challenging myself, and you, to go 30 days without plastic, especially single-use plastic. Here are some of my personal tips, and more, to help you get started:

Salt

Written by my hubby, Adam Dirks Bethany and I knew her emotions and everything were just a little off kilter, something was up and we had to kill the suspicions. I ran to the store and bought a test, as sneakily as I could so no one at the store could see. She took the test, covered it up, sat down, and nervously waited. The suspense in the room was thick. When we uncovered it…it was positive!

Big Wave, Little Me

He isn’t afraid to cry out for mama’s and dada’s help when a wave seems too big and scary for him, or cry to me in defeat after a wipeout. It’s my joy to comfort him, encourage him, and help him realize that wipe outs are part of it and to get back on his board to try again. I think of how sometimes when I am facing a new obstacle in my life, I’m like him looking at...

You Can

The timing wasn’t exactly ideal in my mind at that time. Or so I thought. For starters, I had only been married for a year and was stoking out on my hubby time. Next, I was in the middle of filming a major movie documentary, Unstoppable (which just came out on iTunes and DVD!). Filming included traveling around the world to surf some of the craziest, most colossal, and dangerous waves on the...
