In Conversation With Google's Analytics Evangelist - Avinash Kaushik

Episode #168 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast - is now live and ready for you to listen to.

I had a very unique opportunity this past week. I was invited to give a speech at the first-ever National Sales Conference for Google. With nearly 3000 people in attendance, I was the only non-Google employee speaker. One of the Google employee speakers was Avinash Kaushik - their Analytics Evangelist, Blogger at Occam's Razor and the author of the best-selling business book, Web Ana

Your Company Is A Media Company

One of the big ideas that comes out when we discuss Social Media is that any company can now publish content to the world. Most companies aren't set-up to be content producers. But, what we forget to really talk about is that it's not all about the content. It's about the fact that every company is now a media company (and media companies are driven - partially - by the content they publish).

Your company used to need permission to tell its story to the masses. You needed to secure a Public Rel

6 Ways To Inject New Ways Of Thinking Into Your Business

There are some who say that it is time to "think outside of the box." There are some who say that there is no box. There are are some who are quick to generate new ideas. There are some who are dying to know how those people are so quick to come up with new ideas.

In the interest of helping those who are trying to figure out new ways to think differently, here are six ways to generate new ways of thinking. The main concept behind all of these (even if they are channels you are already using/awa

On Being Rude

Customer service calls will always escalate when the individual who is representing the brand attempts to either control the conversation or treat the person complaining as if they are stupid. It's a huge Marketing faux-pas. It happens way more than it should.

A personal story: the other day I lost it on the phone when speaking to the customer service center representative of a very large brand. It's not in my character to lose it. It's a brand I have a strong affinity for, and a brand I am ver

Maybe It Is Time For Marketing To Move Away From "The Big Idea"

Everything we do in Marketing, Advertising and Communications comes out of "The Big Idea." It's what drives the marketing strategy, it's what drives the brand and agency to get excited about the campaign, and it's what drives consumers to put their hands in their pockets and hand over their hard-earned dollars.

Maybe it is time for Marketing to move away from "The Big Idea."

Whether we like it or not, times have changed. Prior to the Internet and the social media platforms it has given us, we

Strategy Trumps Tactics Or Ask "Why?" Not "What?"

When it comes to building anything in the Digital Marketing channels, instead of asking, "what are we doing on Facebook (or insert any other online social network here)?" ask, "why should we be on Facebook (or insert any other online social network here)?" Remember, "what" is a tactic and "why" is the strategy. Tying your strategy into your over-arching business goals will drive real results (and yes, that will make you money).

Following is the second online video we (the team at Twist Image) c

It's A Matter Of Trust

Every day people ask, "does Social Media really work?", "can it grow my business?" or "can you make any real money doing all of this stuff?" The truth is, there is only one way to answer "yes" to all of these questions, and here's how...

Build trust.

It's that easy... and it's that hard.

Over four years ago, I took a chance. I got into my car and drove to Boston from Montreal to attend the first-ever PodCamp. I had heard of both Julien Smith (he was doing a Podcast and Blog called, In Over Y

The Legacy That You Are Building

Do we all agree that the Internet is pushing us ever-more closer to a real-time information channel?

Based on the success of Twitter and the recent acquisition of FriendFeed by Facebook, it seems that there is some kind of groundswell pushing us closer to a world where everything is at our fingertips in real time. Some of it we will actively seek out, some of it will just show up on our radars through the marvels of new media serendipity. Either way, it's making news instances flare up to the t
