Maybe You Should Not Be Publishing Anything Online

"Just because you can, it does not mean that you should." It's a great line, and it's a truism more and more people engaged in Social Media might want to take to heart.

One of the more pivotal moments in Social Media for me happened during a conversation I had with David Weinberger (co-author of The Cluetrain Manifesto and author of Everything Is Miscellaneous and Small Pieces Loosely Joined) a few years back. At some point, Weinberger mentioned that people should publish anything and...

The Pending Digital Disruption

How many times a week do you hear someone say, "it's a shame what happened to the music industry?" or, "can you believe what the newspaper industry is going through?"

People say that (and we're not talking about stupid people here, but some very smart individuals) as if the industry they serve (or others) are impenetrable. There is not one industry that is not going to experience these tectonic shifts due to the digitization of our world. Social Media isn't going to save them. A Blog, being ...

The Power Of Engagement And Blog Comments

Engagement is not an absolute. There are many layers and ways to engage. Your engagement may not be my engagement.

On the Blog post, You're Connected, But Are You Engaging? (March 30th, 2010), Jeremy Epstein asks in the comments section, "...haven't you said many times in the past that you don't respond to comments on your blog? Are you then missing out on an engagement opportunity and, also, losing out on possible loyalty from your readers?"

Actually, no. I never said that :) Here's my...

The Business Of Kindness

Is it that hard to be kind to one another? It's an important question to ask. Not just in life, but in business as well.

Is the simple act of having a culture of kindness going to affect the bottom line in a negative way? Meaning, can a business be both kind and profitable? We have seen examples where two seemingly conflicting concepts like this have worked together in harmony (look no further than companies that are both environmentally sound and also highly profitable).

Why isn't kindness...

You're Connected, But Are You Engaging?

If someone is following you, does that mean that they are engaged in who you are and what you're about?

If you take a look in places like your Twitter feed or your newsfeed in Facebook, it becomes abundantly clear that many people feel that they have a right to shill, promote, and push their wares just because they are "connected" to you. Being connected has become a commodity. It's cheap. It's easy, and it's loosing much of it's power and intention. In a day and age where following...

Invasion Of The Hand Computers

We have to give up on the idea that there's a difference between being "online" and what we're experiencing on our mobile devices.

They're both "online" and it's only going to be a short while where the experiences of being online via a computer (be it desktop, laptop or netbook) is that much different from our mobile devices. Afterall, where does Apple's iPad fit in the mix? Is it a mobile device or is it closer to a netbook? (Julien Smith, co-author with Chris Brogan of Trust Agents, and...
