Do The Pivot With Jenny Blake - This Week's Six Pixels Of Separation Podcast
Episode #532 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Mirum Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to.
Jenny Blake had it all. She lived in the Silicon Valley and had an amazing opportunity to work at Google (where she spent five years doing training, coaching and career development). She did that. It wasn't fulfilling enough for her, so she moved to New York and started working as a speaker, business strategist, executive coach... and now, an author for the second time. Her new book is called Pivot (her first book was called, Life After College). She sees her role as helping individuals (at every stage in their career) figure out how to achieve the most impact from the work that they do. She believes that our work can inspire a bigger life, and that it can foster much bigger ideas. It's about structure, organization and using technology to make better, smarter, faster and more empowered decisions. Is it time for you to pivot? Enjoy the conversation...

Six Links Worthy Of Your Attention #326
Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?
My friends: Alistair Croll (BitCurrent, Year One Labs, GigaOM, Human 2.0, Solve For Interesting, the author of Complete Web Monitoring, Managing Bandwidth: Deploying QOS in Enterprise Networks and Lean Analytics), Hugh McGuire (PressBooks, LibriVox, iambik and co-author of Book: A Futurist's Manifesto) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person "must see".
Check out these six links that we're recommending to one another:
WaveNet: A Generative Model for Raw Audio - Deepmind . "The short version of this is: This is the voice of AI. Here's a slightly longer explanation: Most artificially generated voices are either mash-ups of individual sounds (vowels, syllables, etc.) or made from a bunch of parameters (which sound weirdly artificial, but are more versatile). Well, as machine learning continues to knock down computing barriers, here's a way of training a Deep Learning algorithm to make words. It's surprisingly good. What's more, it doesn't care what you feed it -- so you can ask it to make music with the same algorithm, training it on a composer instead of a human voice. Play the samples in the link and listen to your future life partner." (Alistair for Hugh).
Labor Day: From the Job Loop to the Knowledge Loop - Continuations . "Albert Wenger is a partner at Union Square Ventures who writes thoughtfully about economics and the future. Here, he argues that the current cycle of pay and consumption (the 'job loop') is not the right state of things, and instead we need to move as a species to a 'knowledge loop' that's now possible with automation and the rise of abundantly cheap production. It's the best example of this argument I've seen made in recent months." (Alistair for Mitch).
Vladimir Putin Just Wants to Be Friends - Bloomberg BusinessWeek . "This week, I am featuring shirtless leaders of countries that have lots of tundra. Russia under Putin is a scary enigma. I'm not sure whether this interview with Bloomberg editor & chief, John Micklethwait, has been criticized for puffery or not, but even if Putin is putting on a good face here, it's pretty fascinating to hear his side of the global story." (Hugh for Alistair).
Why Trudeau Is Like Trump - Bloomberg BusinessWeek . "Closer to home, we have our own shirtless Prime Minister dreamboat, Trudeau. I have not made up my mind about his policies yet, but this article makes the case that he is wielding his virality unlike any other politician, and to powerful effect. He sure seems to get photographed with his shirt off more often than any other global leader I know of. The case is made that his incredible viral popularity serves as 'cover' for a technocratic approach: find the 'best' experts, the 'best' solutions, and empower the bureaucrats to implement big changes. Of course, 'best' is in the eye of the beholder, but one thing is clear: Trudeau is using (and milking) his popularity in ways we haven't ever seen before." (Hugh for Mitch).
Complete Human and Rat Ex Vivo Spermatogenesis from Fresh or Frozen Testicular Tissue - Biology of Reproduction . "This will make your eyes bleed, unless you are a doctor/healthcare professional, so let me give you the TL;DR on this: human reproduction with sperm that was created in a lab. Synthetic sperm. Synthetic life. It creates 'real' life (depending on how we will define 'real' life from now on). You would think that this would make headlines all over the world. It hasn't. We talk about silly things that politicians spew and whether or not wireless headphones make sense. This is real news. This is science and technology and evolution happening right before our eyes." (Mitch for Alistair).
The Timeless Link Between Writing and Running and Why It Makes for Better Work - Observer . "I used to run a lot. I would go for hours. No music. Just the sound of my body pounding the pavement. This article reminds me a well-worn saying about running that I loved: 'I hate running. I just hate not running more.' I know many people who feel the same way about writing. There is - no doubt - a direct correlation between exercise and the creative process. The most legendary writers were known to take long walks. Daily. My buddy, Ryan Holiday, writes beautifully about how the two worlds should be considered one." (Mitch for Hugh).

Was The iPhone 7 Worth The Wait? What Is The Future Of Uber? All That And More On CHOM FM
Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio broadcasting out of Montreal (home base). It's not a long segment - about 5 to 10 minutes every week - about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly to SoundCloud, if you're interested in hearing more of me blathering away. I'm really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up on listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry and Heather B. morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.
This week we discussed:
Apple. Apple. Apple. The big event happened last week. The iPhone 7 cometh. As suspected, a lot faster, slightly better battery life and... no more headphone jack (hello, AirPods. So, is it worth it? Plus, two cameras on the iPhone. A GPS-enabled and swim-proof Apple Watch. Mario is coming to the iPhone! (Super Mario Run).
Is Uber going to stay in Quebec? A "pilot" deal was secured last week, even though the provincial government told the global brand that Uber drivers are not playing by the same set of rules as regular cabbies who hold valid taxi licenses. The one-year deal will see Uber acquiring the equivalent of 300 taxi permits, which gives the company 50,000 operating hours a week. In addition to collecting and paying taxes, Uber will have to pay a 90-cent fee per ride to the government if its drivers collectively work 50,000 hours a week or less; $1.10 per ride between 50,000 and 100,000 hours, and $1.26 for more than 100,000 hours. Uber will also pay a $0.07 fee per ride, which, the agreement says, is a way to respect the fact that traditional taxi drivers have high insurance costs. The fees paid by Uber will go into a fund to help modernize the traditional taxi industry, the deal says. I'm guessing by the time this all gets sorted out, taxis will be driverless :)
App of the week: Brain Wave (this one is $6.99).

Unmistakable Creative With Srinivas Rao - This Week's Six Pixels Of Separation Podcast
Episode #531 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Mirum Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to.
Podcasting continues to grow and develop into an important media channel. I've been podcasting every week for over a decade, so it's always interesting to see news like the IAB and Edison Research released this week about podcasting's explosive growth (Podcast Advertising Study 2016). Another podcast that many people love is The Unmistakable Creative. The host is Srinivas Rao and he recently published a book titled, Unmistakable - Why Only Is Better Than Best. The depth of his show is a sight to behold (and listen to). Srini has conducted over six hundred interviews with thought leaders and people from all walks of life. The topic is loosely themed as branding, storytelling, and marketing. He is most passionate about extracting unmistakable stories out of people (he claims that this is his superpower). Enjoy the conversation...

Apple iPhone 7 (And More) Launch In Less Than Two Minutes
A new iPhone. New headphones And More.
It took Apple more than two hours to show the world what technology will look like for the next short while. Their product presentations are now legendary. Many of the new products had been hinted at, guessed or leaked over the past several months. The main rumours were validated. We have the iPhone 7, headphones without cables (AirPods), an updated Apple Watch (hello, GPS and water resistant!), and Mario is coming to the App Store (Super Mario Run). Personally, I'm waiting on the next generation of Apple laptops (guess that will be coming shortly?). Still, it can be hard to sit through their multi-hour affair. Thankfully, the good people at Recode took the two hour-plus spectacle, and broke it down into a Twitter-esque two minutes of highlights.

Six Links Worthy Of Your Attention #325
Framed - The Los Angeles Times . "Well, it's back to school time, and nothing says back-to-school like PTA drama. But this is more like Serial. Nick Bilton's long-form journalism does this juicy story of suburban vengeance justice. Movie rights have probably already been sold." (Alistair for Hugh).
Alien VS Predator Stop Motion - Counter 656 - YouTube . "Oh, but the title belies the number of pop-culture crossovers. When Batman and C-3PO show up to take out Aliens, it's on. This is a glorious piece of stop-motion work. Maybe still a bit too much stop-motion blood for the kiddies, though." (Alistair for Mitch).
Why Wasps Sting In Autumn - Country File . "We've a had a pretty great summer here in Montreal, and the past few weeks have been no exception. That means, for my family anyway, lots of outdoor eating. We've had wasps around all summer, but they've never been much of a problem. Until now. As soon as we sit down to eat, they are all over our food. The other day, one landed on my daughter's cheek and stung her! What's going on? Why are wasps so quiet in the early summer, and such a nuisance at the end of the summer? Finally, I know the answer." (Hugh for Alistair).
Do: Sol LeWitt's Electrifying Letter of Advice on Self-Doubt, Overcoming Creative Block, and Being an Artist - Brain Pickings . "Do you ever get stuck, unable to move forward? Worried about what you are doing, how it will be received, the meaning behind your efforts? If you are at all creative, the answer is probably yes; and the solution, according to Sol LeWitt is to just... DO." (Hugh for Mitch).
How to Raise a Genius: Lessons from a 45-Year Study of Supersmart Children - Scientific American . "Alistair is one of the smartest people that I know. Seriously. When he talks, I wish I had a 'rewind' and a 'save' button for him. I, literally, just nod most of the time because - quite frankly - I have no idea what he's talking about. Yes, that smart. I'm not pandering. It's true. This past summer, I had the chance the chance to meet his mother at Startup Festival. I spent a lot of my time with her trying to figure out how she managed to create such a smart creature. No such luck. Maybe the answers are right here?" (Mitch for Alistair).
One in four Americans didn't open a book last year - Quartz . "We are reading so many ridiculous headlines in the media lately, that we are being completely desensitized to pieces of research and articles that should - in all seriousness - make our jaws drops. This is one of them. I could not believe it. 25% of the population? How can it be?..." (Mitch for Hugh).

Chuck Martin nearly saved my life. You will have to listen to the show to find out why. It's true. He is also a bestselling author, CEO of Net Future Institute, and I see him every single day in my inbox, because he's also the Editor of MediaPost's amazing IoT Daily, where he writes about how all of our devices will be connected to one another - and the net - and what this means for our homes, businesses and technology. He's really done it all. He is a former Vice President of IBM, an amazing speaker, and as the founding Publisher of Interactive Age, associate publisher of Information Week, and so much more. His numerous books include, Mobile Influence, The Third Screen, The Smartphone Handbook, Smarts, Coffee At Luna's and many more. He is working on a new book titled, The Internet of Everything (IoE). Less Money. Less Traffic. Advertising In Chaos?
Who benefits from a world where advertising is getting less money and there is less traffic for the content?
This is the question that all media is challenged with. It is a fact. Some are suffering in a big way. Some are suffering a little softer. Some will be suffering sooner than they anticipate. Advertising (mostly due to programmatic) is seeing the CPMs being pushed down in a technological version of a reverse auction (i.e. "how cheap can we buy this spot for?"). There is less traffic, because there are so many different ways to consume media (on demand, recorded for later, ad blocked and more). The numbers don't lie. Yes, advertising continues to be a healthy business (see: Advertising. Full Steam Ahead), but there is a sentiment that the major media companies are still being very protective of their respective networks, channels and properties... and not doing enough to move towards a world where video content will be consumed - primarily - on mobile devices.
The struggle is real.
Many point to a media company like Vice as the antidote. They have the millennial target audience and they are now producing all kinds of channels and networks to satiate their content-starved audience on whatever platform these viewers desire. Vice co-founder, Shane Smith, is an amazing speaker, thinker and practitioner of this new media reality. He has a clear vision of what media is (and what it should become), while being very frustrated with the politics, and its current state. In a world where 70% of all digital video is happening on Facebook and Google (and these companies are claiming that they are not media companies), what will be the next few chapters for everyone involved in media, content and advertising? At this year's Edinburgh International Television Festival, Smith addressed the crowd in a very compelling one hour speech, and then sat down for an additional hour to field questions. If you're reading this article, you're interested in media. If you're interested in media, you need to watch both the presentation and the post-presentation interview.
Keep a notebook handy: The James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture - Shane Smith, Founder and CEO of Vice and The Post-MacTaggart Interview.

A Strong Foundation For B2B Marketing
Here's a line that often gets me into trouble...
I do not believe that there is a huge difference anymore, when it comes to marketing. B2B and B2C used to be very different and complex beasts. While the complexity has not changed, both B2B and B2C really do have an entirely new way to think, communicate and connect with prospective clients (thank you, digital!). Yes, the complexity of the sales are very different. Yes, speaking to consumers against very specific individuals within an organization is different. Still the channels and opportunities (the ability to tell, sell and embody a new story) are closer than they have ever been. Because there are so many of them, it's no longer B2B or B2C, but rather how each business builds their own, unique, defendable, marketing empires. True, if you're in the B2B world and everything that you do has shifted to be process and procurement-driven, things are very different. True, you still have to create compelling content and messages to even be in the lot of businesses that may be called upon by procurement. So, in the end, it's all about your brand, the stories that you weave, and your ability to map, track and connect with your prospective clients. That feels like it could be the story of a B2B or B2C opportunity.
So, how are B2B marketers doing these days?
Well, according to the B2B Content Marketing - 2016 Benchmarks, Budgets, and Trends - North America report, nearly two-thirds of B2B marketers have no documented content marketing strategy, and thirty percent say their efforts are effective. What will it take to move this needle? As an introduction to the 10th annual MarketingProfs B2B Marketing Forum (October 18 - 21, 2016 in Boston), and to help get B2B marketers back on track, the team a TopRank Marketing (shout out to Lee Odden) partnered with MarketingProfs (shout out to Ann Handley) and produced a really quick, smart and powerful eBook titled, How To Build Your B2B Marketing Empire From The Ground Up. The eBook is free (go and grab it!) focuses on four core areas:
The three fundamental questions a good strategy should answer.
The elements of an unshakeable foundation.
The ideal characteristics of your marketing team.
How to build your career to last.
It's very exciting that the team at TopRank Marketing and MarektingProfs asked me to contribute this eBook (thank you!). I wrote about speed, slowing down and decision making (confused? Don't be). I'm also very excited got be speaking on the last day (Friday, October 21st, 2017) at the 2016 B2B Marketing Forum. My topic will be: The New Business Imperative - 7 Groundbreaking Movements All Brands Need To Embrace. Here's the abstract for this session: "Still worried about websites over mobile applications? Still struggling with content marketing and social media? There's something happening -- here and now -- that moves way beyond this. Are you ready for messaging bots, live video, augmented/virtual reality, marketing automation, the uncoupling of the 'buy' button, consumer's voice as navigation, and the blockchain? If not, you need to be. Join us for this future-looking session where we'll explore these seven technological movements and what they mean for your business today, tomorrow, and beyond. What may feel like science fiction, is now the new business imperative."
Join me at the 10th Annual MarketingProfs B2B Marketing Forum and check out the eBook, How To Build Your B2B Marketing Empire From The Ground Up.
