Search Engine Optimization For Growth With John Jantsch - This Week's Six Pixels Of Separation Podcast
Episode #537 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Mirum Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to.
Seth Godin calls John Jantsch, "the Peter Drucker of small business marketing tactics." John is known to many as the Duct Tape Marketing guy. He's built a pretty powerful empire helping small business owners to grow. Over the years, he's built a booming business called Duct Tape Marketing that includes consulting, training, education and much more. He's a phenomenal speaker and the author of many bestselling business books, including Duct Tape Marketing, The Referral Engine, The Commitment Engine, Duct Tape Selling and the recently published, SEO for Growth - The Ultimate Guide for Marketers, Web Designers, and Entrepreneurs. Admittedly, when I saw that John was publishing a book on search engine marketing, my first reactions was, "what year is this?... hasn't everything about search already been written?" Apparently not. So, what is the state of search engine optimization? Is there a world beyond Google? Take a listen. Enjoy the conversation...

The LinkedIn Mastermind Behind The Future Of Work
If anyone knows about the state of work and the economy, it would have to be Reid Hoffman.
Hoffman is a known entity. He is the co-founder and executive chairman of LinkedIn. LinkedIn was recently acquired by Microsoft for over $26 billion. Along with being a part of what has become known as the PayPal Mafia, he's also an investor in another tech and Silicon Valley startups (including Airbnb, Facebook, and many more). The billionaire is also passionate about how we work... and how we will work (he co-authored the bestselling books, The Startup Of You and The Alliance). Most recently, he sat down with Charlie Rose (one of my personal personal favorite conversationalists) to discuss the current economy, LinkedIn, investing and, of course, where this all going. It's an amazing two-part conversation and one that everyone should check out.
Watch it right here: Charlie Rose In Conversation With Reid Hoffman Part One and Part Two.

Six Links Worthy Of Your Attention #331
Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?
My friends: Alistair Croll (BitCurrent, Year One Labs, GigaOM, Human 2.0, Solve For Interesting, the author of Complete Web Monitoring, Managing Bandwidth: Deploying QOS in Enterprise Networks and Lean Analytics), Hugh McGuire (PressBooks, LibriVox, iambik and co-author of Book: A Futurist's Manifesto) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person "must see".
Check out these six links that we're recommending to one another:
Elon Musk's Wild Ride - Bloomberg . "Simulation-enthusiast, iconoclast, saviour of the species -- there are plenty of ways people describe Elon Musk. It's almost plausible to see him as a stranded Martian time-traveler, building the things he needs to return home, skirting the risk of paradox by pushing the envelope without tearing through it, warning us against AI. But is all well in House Musk? This Bloomberg piece takes a more critical look at what he's built." (Alistair for Hugh).
Preparing For The Future Of Artificial Intelligence - Executive Office of the President National Science and Technology Council . "A few months ago, when I was in DC, I met some members of Obama's tech team. Their thinking on machine learning and AI was encouraging, pragmatic, and a bit scary. Recently, the administration released a document entitled, Preparing for the Future of AI. If you think, as Musk does, that AI will kill us all -- or just, as I do, that it'll transform every aspect of human creativity and economics -- you should probably have a look." (Alistair for Mitch).
How Half Of America Lost Its F**king Mind - Cracked . "The best explanation of Trump I've seen, and one we should all read." (Hugh for Alistair).
The Weird Economics of Ikea - FiveThirtyEight . "What isn't Ikea becomes Ikea, and what is Ikea becomes everything." (Hugh for Mitch).
It Looked Great. It Was Unwatchable. - Slate . "What happens when you create something with a new technology that is so jarring and pushing of the limits that humans, literally, can't handle it... yet? If you were the movie director, would you have kept at it or killed it?" (Mitch for Alistair).
Telling Is Listening: Ursula K. Le Guin on the Magic of Real Human Conversation - Brain Pickings . "There is a magic in how us humans communicate and connect. It's easy to forget that in a world of text messages and snapping. Let's not. People often want to know why I don't push out more content in social media. It's crazy to me. I like my content to be worthy of your ears and your discourse. I'm an old, old man, I guess." (Mitch for Alistair).
Feel free to share these links and add your picks on Twitter, Facebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.

Exploding Smartphones, Facebook's Workplace And Fake News Sites - The Week's CTRL ALT Delete Segment On CHOM 97.7 FM
Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio broadcasting out of Montreal (home base). It's not a long segment - about 5 to 10 minutes every week - about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly to SoundCloud, if you're interested in hearing more of me blathering away. I'm really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up on listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry and Heather B. morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.
This week we discussed:
Samsung is having a very rough go. Now, no one is allowed to bring a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 on a flight in the US and Canada. This is already a $5+ billion dollar mess for Samsung... and it is hurting the brand.
Many people have talked about Facebook as your own, private space. Many people have struggled with how to separate their personal and professional lives online. Most have given up. Some still consider Facebook for personal and LinkedIn for professional. Well, this all might change. Facebook just launched Workplace (which was previously called, Facebook At Work). So, how will this play out and will businesses jump on board?
Have you seen the countless fake news sites that are popping up? Just look at your Facebook feed? We are, constantly, sharing false news that is being perceived as real. Well, Google is taking a radical step and introducing a Fact Check Tag in the US and UK. Will people notice it? Will they use it? Do they really care? The future of real news is at stake...
App of the week: Dribbble.
Take a listen right here.

You Light Up My Night
You did it... thank you!
Last week, I ask you to help me out. You can read the full story right here: A Little Help From My Friends... So Please Help! My goal was to raise $5000 for the Light The Night Walk. The walk is done to help raise funds and awareness for leukemia and other blood cancers. Well, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Together, this Six Pixels of Separation community raised over $17,000!
Wow! Because of you, our team (Leah's Helpers) was able to raise over $50,000 this year. Over the years, we've raised close to $400,000! Amazing. The walk took place last night in Montreal. We had a supermoon that guided the way through a very emotional and powerful walk. Seeing the names of people I know who did not make it through - like Leah did - always makes me appreciate the kindness of others, and how lucky we all are to have our health.
I really can't thank you enough.
It's not too late. If you would still like to contribute, please do so here: Light The Night Walk.
Also, as part of my fundraising efforts, I offered up some prizes. Here are the winners...
Prize #1: Whoever donates the most money gets me for a one-hour get together. It can be via Skype, phone or in-person (meaning, if you're in Montreal or if I happen to be travelling to wherever it is that you live). It will be a social meeting, but you can feel free to ask me anything. Lunch is on me. I'll also include a signed copy of Six Pixels of Separation and CTRL ALT Delete. The winner of this is: LinkNow Media (they donated $2758! Thank you!).
Prize #2: Whoever comes in next will get a signed copy of Six Pixels of Separation and CTRL ALT Delete, plus a business book bundle that I will, personally, curate. The winner of this is: Barry Pascal.
Prize #3: I will also do a random draw and give away three pairs of "special" tickets to The Art Of... event of your choice. This is just the tickets, so you will have to handle travel, accommodations, etc... The winners of this are: Benjamin Yoskovitz, Marc Cooper and Denise Herman.
Many thanks to everyone who helped out! Hoping to see you all soon, so that I can thank you in person!

Your Work Is Your Art With Ron Tite - This Week's Six Pixels Of Separation Podcast
Episode #536 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Mirum Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to.
Full disclosure: I love this guy. Ron Tite is a dear friend. We text. We chat. We go for dinner. I like him. Not just in Facebook like kind of way... I really, really like him. Man crush! He's also a fellow marketing agency professional. He's been in the trenches as long as I have, and has been through it all. He's currently heading up his own content marketing agency called, The Tite Group. We don't just commiserate when we're together. We celebrate. We both feel extremely fortunate to be doing the work that we're doing. The similarities don't stop there. Ron Tite is a world class speaker on something he calls, The Experience Economy. He's a lover of all things stand-up comedy (he's, actually, a pretty great stand-up and improv artist as well). Most recently, Ron co-authored his first book (along with my friends at The Art Of Productions - Scott Kavanagh and Christopher Novais) called, Everyone's An Artist - How Creativity Gives You The Edge In Everything You Do. This was a blast to do. Enjoy the conversation...

Six Links Worthy Of Your Attention #330
Make America Great Again: The Trump Presidency . "I am avoiding posts about the U.S. presidency. There's plenty of that on my (Canadian) Facebook wall. I'd just like to point out that when political commentary includes a game, in which you can build a wall, buy from Russia, and manage global objections to policies, well, this may be the closest thing we have to an electoral platform. Videos games are satire." (Alistair for Hugh).
The Binge Breaker - The Atlantic . "If apps are addictive, and developers try to make them impossible to leave under the moniker of 'growth hacking', does software engineering need a Hippocratic Oath? Former Google Product Philosopher (yes, that's a thing at Google, I guess) thinks so. There's a longer thought in here: Increasingly ad-tech feels like it was built to infer who we are, treating the prospective customer as a hostile witness, harvesting her attention. Maybe a bit of philosophy is a good idea." (Alistair for Mitch).
The Fencing World Championships Hosted An Awesome Lightsaber Duel - Nerdist . "Fencers choreograph epic lightsaber duel. Check the original and the one with sound effects below. Also, stop reading about Trump." (Hugh for Alistair).
Five Books to Change Liberals' Minds - Bloomberg . "It's been a pretty hard few months for those of us addicted to politics. Hard also to understand those [...]s on the other side (whichever side you are on). Well, if you are on the liberal side (as I am), then perhaps you should try harder to understand the conservative side. Here are some books to help you do that." (Hugh for Mitch).
I'm done pretending that Silicon Valley tech is visionary - Recode . "Are we truly solving big, impactful problems that the world needs resolved? Or, are we solving problems that aren't really problems and calling this stuff 'visionary'? There's a tons of cynicism and skepticism that blends in well with the unicorns and dragons of Silicon Valley. Still, when someone says that the truly meaningful organizations are generally 'underfunded and unnoticed,' maybe we should take a deeper look at what we, in fact, do call innovative?" (Mitch for Alistair).
Deep Learning Is Going to Teach Us All the Lesson of Our Lives: Jobs Are for Machines - Scott Santens - Medium . "I've been making the argument that robots and machine learning will require humans to work closer than ever before with technology. This argument is being made, because there are many who think that these forms (and other types) of technology are actually going to replace us. It seems far fetched, doesn't it? Well, read this. Suddenly, I'm left wondering if jobs really are for computers, and us human beings are going to have to find something else to do with our time... and to generate income. Scary." (Mitch for Hugh).

Simply Brilliant With William C. Taylor - This Week's Six Pixels Of Separation Podcast
Episode #535 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Mirum Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to.
Time sometimes forgets the name of those that we should never forget. It may be easy to point to a book or author as a form of inspiration. For me, I happened stumble upon a magical magazine in the early days called, Fast Company. That magazine got my engines going. It helped me to learn, think and imagine a better kind of business world. I still never miss a print issue, and will visit their website daily for more insights. Most know William C. Taylor (known to most as Bill Taylor), as an amazing speaker, journalist and author. Mavericks At Works and Practically Radical were not only bestsellers, but timely books that further pushed the boundaries of how great work can get done. Now, Bill Taylor is back is an awesome and powerful read titled, Simply Brilliant - How Great Organizations Do Ordinary Things in Extraordinary Ways. He doesn't write about Amazon and/or Apple, but has searched out and dug deep into many organizations and industries that you would not suspect in a world where most believe that all innovation and ingenuity is coming from Silicon Valley. Many also don't realize that Taylor's other claim to fame, includes being the co-founder of Fast Company. He was, literally, there as our world of business changed and was bringing it forward to the rest of us. His insights are always welcome and refreshing. Enjoy the conversation...

A Little Help From My Friends... So Please Help!
Giving. It's what I do. I'm thankful to serve you.
I had dinner the other week with someone who is very successful. They use content marketing as a way to sell millions of dollars worth of online courses, mastermind sessions and more. Most people who dig deep into Six Pixels of Separation and the decade-plus of content that I have created, are shocked that I don't even ask for anybody's email address. We might do things like this in the future, but right now (and for the past decade), it has always been about one thing: growing the knowledge, skills and education in our industry. I want to make digital marketing the primary way that brands connect with consumers and vice-versa. There is no backend to this.
I've made a ton of friends. We have built a great community.
I have seen people who started out their careers by reading the words here (or listening to the podcast), and now they have become true leaders. There is nothing more gratifying.
Today, I need your help. Today, I am asking you to help and to step up.
Back in 2010, my best friend called to let me know that his five year old daughter, Leah, had cancer... leukemia. My world collapsed. A few weeks prior she was at my kid's birthday party, laughing, playing... perfect. Now... leukemia? It was - without a question - one of the hardest moments in my life... trying to understand, and take in what my best friend was telling me about his daughter... who I would treat as my own daughter, in terms of love and care. I went into a tailspin. Leah's courage throughout this nightmare is what pulled everyone through - family and friends. If there were ever a definition for the word "survivor" it is Leah. After a lengthy and hard battle, she is - thankfully - in remission, and back home where she belongs: with her family and friends. She is happily in remission.
She's lucky, but many, many people are not this lucky.
As you know, not everyone is lucky like Leah. A strong percentage of children diagnosed with AML don't make it. Sadly, a boy who went to school with my child passed away after two relapses at the age of five. I can't fathom what this family has gone through. We think of him and his family often. There are many stories. Many people trying to raise money. Like I said, it's never easy to ask. But I am asking you. For the sixth year in a row, I will taking part in the Light The Night fundraising campaign. The walk will take place on Saturday, October 15th. Our team, Leah's Helpers, has raised over $300,000.00 and been one of the most prolific teams in the history of the walk.
I am asking you to help me support this noble cause.
I do my best to put out lots of content every week. This makes it close to five thousand entries over the years. This isn't about me raising money. It's about our kids and the randomness and cruelty that is leukemia and because none of us are safe.
Please help.
I set a goal of $5000 to raise from friends and family. I do realize that times are tough, and many of us are watching our wallets just a little bit closer than we usually have, but please consider giving something. If over the years, any of my content has struck a chord with you, made you smile, made you see your business world in a different way, I hope that you will consider this ask as the "tip jar" for my thoughts.
If you can find it in your heart to give, please do so right here: Light The Night Walk.
How about a little giver's gain?
As a "thank you," here's what I am offering:
Whoever donates the most money gets me for a one-hour get together.
Whoever comes in next will get a signed copy of Six Pixels of Separation and CTRL ALT Delete, plus a business book bundle that I will, personally, curate.
I will also do a random draw and give away three pairs of "special" tickets to The Art Of... event of your choice. This is just the tickets, so you will have to handle travel, accommodations, etc...
Now, it's your turn. Please help out. Thank you.

Virtual Reality, Amazon Prime Air, Snapchat, Swiping Right For Sperm And More - The Week's CTRL ALT Delete Segment On CHOM 97.7 FM
Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio broadcasting out of Montreal (home base). It's not a long segment - about 5 to 10 minutes every week - about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. I'm really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up on listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry and Heather B. morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.
This week we discussed:
Recap of my keynote presentation, Virtually There, at the incredible Shop.org event in Dallas and the evolution of virtual and augmented reality - which is going to affect us all.
Check out Sephora's amazing Virtual Artist.
Will robots take our jobs or will these new technologies open up all kinds of new jobs and opportunities?
Amazon and Prime Air will circumvent the shipping and logistics companies.
Snapchat has changed its name. The corporation calls itself, Snap Inc. now (the app is still called, Snapchat). Plus, they announced a new camera glasses piece of technology called, Spectacles. They will cost around $130, and be able to recorded up to 10 seconds of circual video through a 115 degree-angle lens. What do they think that they can get right that Google Glass got so wrong?
Swipe right for a sperm donor? If Tinder thinks this is what it takes to find the right date/mate, why can't the same type of functionality be applied to a women looking for a potential sperm donor? The London Sperm Bank thinks it's on to something. What do you think?
App of the week: Flipp.
