CSI Portsmouth, Crime and the City Event a great success

Over 200 people packed the hall in Portsmouth to hear crime fiction authors pitch their wits against police and forensic experts in a unique event the first ever Crime and the City CSI Portsmouth held as part of Portsmouth Bookfest on 6 November.

Lovers of crime fiction and CSI television programmes came together to hear crime authors and crime experts debate fact meets fiction.

Crime and the City, CSI Portsmouth kicked off at 10am with a morning panel featuring crime authors Simon Brett, June Hampson and (me) Pauline Rowson, who were joined by Crime Scene Investigators from Hampshire Constabulary and forensic psychologists from the University of Portsmouth. The afternoon session at 1pm featured crime authors Graham Hurley, Peter Lovesey and Pauline Rowson again with police and forensic experts.

On the expert side was DS Martin Chudley, in charge of the Crime Scene Investigation team for Hampshire Constabulary and Jane Aston and her team from the Fingerprinting Bureau. With them was Dr Claire Nee, Director of the International Centre for Research in Forensic Psychology at Portsmouth University, an expert in forensic psychology and Dr Paul Smith, an expert in Crime Scenes. To keep us all in check was panel moderator Cheryl Buggy, Station Director at Express FM, as she stimulated a lively discussion amongst the authors and experts and took questions from the audience.

There was the opportunity for delegates to see how the fingerprinting bureau works and have their thumbprint pressed into a keyring to take away. Delegates were also able to talk to the crime authors to find out how they come up with their intricate plots and research their novels.

A mobile bookshop was provided by the Hayling Island Bookshop who helped to organise the event along with the Portsmouth Library Service.

It was a great day and we all enjoyed it tremendously. It was so successful that we are hoping to build on it and do something even bigger and better next year at the Portsmouth Bookfest 2011. I'd like to thank everyone who participated and who worked so hard to make it a success, and most of all I'd like to thank the audience.

Award winning crime author John Harvey to join crime author Pauline Rowson at CSI Portsmouth, 5 Nov.

I’m delighted that award wining crime author, John Harvey has agreed to be on the afternoon panel at CSI Portsmouth, where crime fiction meets crime fact, at the John Pounds Centre, Portsmouth on Saturday 5 November.

I consider it a privilege to be appearing with a crime writer whose novels I have enjoyed and admired. And flattered that my own DI Horton crime novels have been compared to John Harvey's Frank Elder novels by reviewers in the States.

John Harvey began writing in 1975, and now has over 100 published books to his credit, most recently a collection of short stories, A Darker Shade of Blue. The first of his celebrated Charlie Resnick novels, Lonely Hearts, was named by The Times as one of the 100 most notable crime novels of the last century. Flesh and Blood, the first of three Frank Elder novels, was awarded both the British Crime Writers’ Association Silver Dagger and the US Barry Award in 2004. In 2007 he received the CWA Cartier Diamond Dagger for Sustained Excellence in Crime Writing, and in 2009 he was made an honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Nottingham. In addition, he has written many scripts for television and radio.

You can read more about John Harvey on his web site http://www.mellotone.co.uk/

"Joining John Harvey and Pauline Rowson are crime authors Mark Billingham and Michael Ridpath for the afternoon panel are crime experts from Hampshire Police, Forensic Psychologists from the International Centre for Research in Forensic Psychology and crime scene experts from the University of Portsmouth."

More details including programme can be found on http://www.rowmark.co.uk at CSI Portsmouth 2011.

Fantastic time at CSI Portsmouth, great audience, experts and crime authors

Here is the report (below) from the CSI Portsmouth event held on Saturday 3 November. It was very enjoyable and thanks to everyone for making it so successful. Already looking forward to CSI Portsmouth 2013.

Crime authors Stephen Booth, Ann Cleeves, Matt Hilton and Pauline Rowson, and crime experts from Hampshire Police, the University of Portsmouth and the University of Surrey kept a packed audience enthralled at CSI Portsmouth on Saturday 3 November when they were grilled by Cheryl Buggy, Station Director of Express FM radio, in two lively panel debates of crime fiction versus crime fact.

Over a hundred and sixty people attended the one day event held at the John Pounds Centre, Portsmouth to hear what police and crime experts had to say about their work and to listen to the crime authors talking about their novels.

The audience also had the chance to put their questions to the panel and to talk to the team from the fingerprint bureau and students from the Forensic Science course from South Downs College who provided a crime scene.

CSI Portsmouth 2012 is in its third year, the brainchild of Pauline Rowson who organises it with Portsmouth City Council Library Service and the Hayling Island Bookshop. Part of Portsmouth BookFest it is fast becoming a major fixture in the crime fiction festival calendar.

Joining authors Ann Cleeves, Stephen Booth, Matt Hilton and Pauline Rowson were Carolyn Lovell, Crime Scene Manager/Coordinator for Hampshire Police, DC Terry Fitzjohn, Fire Investigation Officer for Hampshire Police, Watch Manager Andy Earl from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Services, Adrian Fretter, from the Hi-Tech Crime Unit of Hampshire Police, fraud expert Dr Mark Button from the University of Portsmouth, Institute of Criminal Justice Studies and Professor Bran Nicol an expert on crime culture and stalking.

Both panel sessions ended with a book signing by the authors and there was the chance for the audience to talk individually to the authors and experts.

CSI Portsmouth 2013 will take place on Staurday 2 November. More details to follow.

Lovely to meet readers at Newcastle and Hartlepool Libraries

I'm back from a very successful mini tour of the North East of England where I was invited to give two talks.

This is the third time in three years that I have been invited to talk to readers in the North East of England and I shall be back up there at Gateshead Library on 25 April 2013.

I was speaking at Newcastle City Library on 12 November and on Tuesday 13 November I was at Seaton Carew Library, Hartlepool giving a talk as part of Hartlepool Borough Library twenty first anniversary celebrations. The audience at both events were as delightful as ever and I was thrilled to meet so many DI Andy Horton fans and to also introduce my crime and thriller novels to some new readers.

My thanks to both Newcastle and Hartlepool Library Services for organising the events and to all library staff for the fantastic and highly worthwhile service they provide to the community. Without the library service it would be a very barren landscape.

The DI Andy Horton novels are set in the Solent area on the South Coast of England where I live.

New venue announced for CSI Portsmouth 2013

I'm delighted that the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard is to be the new venue for the popular one day event, CSI Portsmouth 2013, part of Portsmouth BookFest to be held on Saturday 2 November.

CSI Portsmouth 2013 will be held in the Princess Royal Gallery at the museum, which is one of the settings for the latest DI Horton novel, Undercurrent, published in hardcover in the UK and Commonwealth in January and in the USA in May.

Naval historian Dr Douglas Spalding is found dead in Number One Dock in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard after giving a lecture in the Princess Royal Gallery in the Royal Navy Museum. Detective Superintendent Uckfield of the Major Crime Team is adamant it is suicide. DI Horton is not so sure. Angry and frustrated at the lack of investigation, Horton goes out on a limb to prove he’s right and discovers a cover up at the highest level. Soon Horton begins to find disturbing similarities with his own private investigations into the disappearance of his mother thirty years ago. As he gets closer to the truth someone is determined to prevent it from ever coming out.

CSI Portsmouth, where crime fiction meets crime fact is now in its fourth year and 2013 promises to be as exciting as previous years with some top crime authors and crime experts coming along to entertain us all. The panellists for CSI Portsmouth 2013 will be announced during the year.

The National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth is one of Britain’s oldest maritime museums. Its aim is to preserve and present the history of the Fleet - the ships and the men and women who manned them and to make accessible to all the story of the Royal Navy and its people from earliest times to the present.

The tickets for CSI Portsmouth will also include the added bonus of free entry to exhibitions in the museum.

CSI Portsmouth is part of Portsmouth BookFest a festival of popular literature organised by The Hayling Island Bookshop and Portsmouth City Council and runs from October 19 to 3 November. Its aim is to promote reading for pleasure and enthusiasm for literature in the city of Portsmouth.

You can follow CSI Portsmouth on Twitter and on Facebook.

CSI Gateshead with Pauline Rowson, Matt Hilton and Mari Hannah

Nearly a hundred and twenty people attended the first ever CSI Gateshead event at Gateshead Library on Thursday 25 April. Inspired by the CSI Portsmouth event, which I help to organise. The CSI Gateshead event was a huge success.

CSI Gateshead was modelled on the CSI Portsmouth event with some slight variation. The Gateshead event took place over two hours on an evening with one panel of crime fiction authors and crime experts whereas CSI Portsmouth is a full day event with two panels of crime authors and crime experts. Both events are proving to be extremely popular with crime fiction fans and those who enjoy CSI programmes on the television.I am also assiting with and appearing at CSI Basingstoke on Saturday 6 July and at CSI Portsmouth on 2 November.

To read more and see the photographs of CSI Gateshead and to find out more about CSI Portsmouth on 2 November 2013 and CSI Basingstoke on 6 July please visit my website at http://www.rowmark.co.uk

You can see details of all my appearances on the events page.
