National Crime Writing Week in the UK 13-19 June, lots of crime writing events
The Crime Writers' Association (CWA), of which I am very proud to be a member, is celebrating crime writing with National Crime Writing Week between June 13 and 19, 2011. There are lots of events going on around the UK with author talks, appearances, readings, book signings and workshops.
I am holding a Crime Writing Workshop at the Quay Arts Centre, in Newport on the Isle of Wight on Saturday 18 June, and slightly outside of National Crime Writing Week but I'll also be presenting prizes to the winners of the Wight Fair Writers, Crime and Intrigue Short Story Competition on Monday 20 June on the Isle of Wight.
Other events during National Crime Writing Week include Stephen Booth, Matt Hilton and Graham Pears in conversation with Teesside University forensic staff Shirley and Angus Marshall at Middlesbrough Central Library during Middlesbrough Literary Festival. Sounds very much like my Portsmouth CSI event, which this year is scheduled for 5 November. But if you're in Teeside, and a crime fiction fan, then this looks like a really great event.
Then still up north on Monday, John Dean is running a workshop at Crown Street Library, Darlington, DL1 1ND, examining some of the things writers need to consider when writing crime.
On Tuesday Ann Cleeves will be talking about the Vera Stanhope books at Booka Bookshop, Oswestry.
On Thursday Frances Fyfield, Belinda Bauer, S. J. Bolton, Natasha Cooper, Chris Fowler and Gerard O'Donovan will be at London South Bank University.
And on Saturday Pauline Rowson (yes me!) conducts a Crime Writing Workshop at the Quay Arts Centre, Newport, Isle of Wight (had to get that in twice) while Adrian Magson will be interviewed by Ayo Onatade at the Corn Exchange, Witney, Oxfordshire, as part of the Witney Book Festival
There are lots more events around the country, so do visit the National Crime Writing Week website to see what is happening in your area.
There are also plenty of other crime author events outside of National Crime Writing Week, which you can find on the CWA web site.

Fantastic time at CSI Portsmouth, great audience, experts and crime authors
Here is the report (below) from the CSI Portsmouth event held on Saturday 3 November. It was very enjoyable and thanks to everyone for making it so successful. Already looking forward to CSI Portsmouth 2013.
Crime authors Stephen Booth, Ann Cleeves, Matt Hilton and Pauline Rowson, and crime experts from Hampshire Police, the University of Portsmouth and the University of Surrey kept a packed audience enthralled at CSI Portsmouth on Saturday 3 November when they were grilled by Cheryl Buggy, Station Director of Express FM radio, in two lively panel debates of crime fiction versus crime fact.
Over a hundred and sixty people attended the one day event held at the John Pounds Centre, Portsmouth to hear what police and crime experts had to say about their work and to listen to the crime authors talking about their novels.
The audience also had the chance to put their questions to the panel and to talk to the team from the fingerprint bureau and students from the Forensic Science course from South Downs College who provided a crime scene.
CSI Portsmouth 2012 is in its third year, the brainchild of Pauline Rowson who organises it with Portsmouth City Council Library Service and the Hayling Island Bookshop. Part of Portsmouth BookFest it is fast becoming a major fixture in the crime fiction festival calendar.
Joining authors Ann Cleeves, Stephen Booth, Matt Hilton and Pauline Rowson were Carolyn Lovell, Crime Scene Manager/Coordinator for Hampshire Police, DC Terry Fitzjohn, Fire Investigation Officer for Hampshire Police, Watch Manager Andy Earl from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Services, Adrian Fretter, from the Hi-Tech Crime Unit of Hampshire Police, fraud expert Dr Mark Button from the University of Portsmouth, Institute of Criminal Justice Studies and Professor Bran Nicol an expert on crime culture and stalking.
Both panel sessions ended with a book signing by the authors and there was the chance for the audience to talk individually to the authors and experts.
CSI Portsmouth 2013 will take place on Staurday 2 November. More details to follow.

Top crime authors sharing the platform at CrimeFest 2013
Jeffery Deaver and Peter James are lined up to take part in this year’s Crimefest and I'm delighted to be there with them.
I am sure that Jeffrey Deaver's Thriller Writing Seminar as part of the festival’s Crime Writing Workshop will be packed to the rafters. Well worth attending if you're a budding crime author.
Literary Agents will also be attending. Taking part in the Pitch an Agent strand will be Camilla Wray, Broo Doherty and David Headley.
Also at CrimeFest will be TV series "Sherlock"s co-creator, producer and actor Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffatt and Sue Vertue.
My Panel at CrimeFest is on 31 May at 10.10am.I will be appearing with my fellow crime authors, Ann Cleeves, Kate Ellis, J.C. Martin and Kerry Wilkinson discussing 'A Policeman Calls.'
I appeared with Ann Cleeves at CSI Portsmouth 2012, so it will be good to be working with her again.
The Crime Writers' Association (CWA) will also announce the Dagger Awards shortlists at CrimeFest.
CrimeFest takes place at the Royal Marriot Hotel, Bristol and runs from 31 May to 2 June.
The DI Horton novel, A Killing Coast, has been longlisted for the EDunnit Award at CrimeFest 2013

Looking forward to taking part in CrimeFest 2013
I'll be taking part at CrimeFest 2013 this weekend where I'll be on a panel on Friday 31 May and will also be talking to the audience about The Perfect System for Writing a Crime Novel.
My panel appearance is entitled: Evening All: A Policeman Calls. It takes place between 10:10 - 11:00am on Friday 31 May when I'll be appearing with fellow crime authors Ann Cleeves, Kate Ellis, J.C. Martin and Kerry Wilkinson.
I'll also be conducting an In The Spotlight session between 12.30 and 12.50 talking about The Perfect System for Writing a Crime Novel.
Crimefest is a crime fiction convention which follows the format of US conventions and includes interviews, panels, and a gala dinner and attracts audiences from all over the World. First organised in June 2008, CrimeFest draws top crime novelists, readers, editors, publishers and reviewers from around the world and gives delegates the opportunity to celebrate the genre in an informal atmosphere.
It is being held at the Bristol Royal Marriott Hotel from 30 May to 2 June 2013.

Back from a very enjoyable CrimeFest 2013
CrimeFest was buzzing. It was great to catch up with some of my fellow crime writers, meet lots of lovely crime fiction fans and meet up with my publisher, Severn House.
The panel session on Friday morning was well received by a lively audience and my In the Spotlight Session later the same morning where I talked about "The Perfect System for Writing a Crime Novel" was standing room only.
The panel session was chaired by Ann Cleeves and appearing with me were crime authors; J. C. Martin, Kate Ellis and Kerry Wilkinson. We discussed many aspects of crime writing and our novels, including why we chose to set them where we did, why we chose to feature cops, how we research our crime novels and who our favourite fictional detectives are.
Read full article on my website where there are also photographs and I've posted some here.

Who else writes like? Choosing crime novels
It is sometimes difficult to find a new author and one whose novels you think you might enjoy but libraries are a great place for dipping your toe in the water, or rather for letting your fingers do the choosing and there is also a handy little book that can help with that. I came across this when I was appearing at Chichester Library recently with fellow crime authors Peter Lovesey and Simon Brett and it's called Who Else Writes Like?
I opened the book (which was available on the counter for library visitors to check out) and found my entry right under J. K Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, who it has been revealed recently is also a crime author under the name Robert Galbraith. What a good place to appear!
Reviewers have compared the DI Horton novels to American writers, Ed McBain and Joseph Wambaugh and their British counterparts John Harvey and Peter Robinson both of the latter mentioned in the directory Who Else Writes Like?
My crime novels are also compared to those written by Colin Dexter, Ann Cleeves, Robert Barnard, Graham Hurley, Dorothy Simpson and Neil White.
There is also a good website called Fantastic Fiction where it is suggested that if you like Peter James and Stephen Booth, amongst other crime authors, you might like the DI Horton series.
So if you're looking for crime novels to try I hope this helps.
