Death Lies Beneath, Di Andy Horton, gets great review on Publishers Weekly

Death Lies Beneath, the eighth DI Andy Horton marine mystery set on the South Coast of England, in the Solent area of Portsmouth, has received more good reviews in America where it will be published in hardcover and as an ebook on 1 November 2012.

American Book reviewer, Kirkus says, "Horton’s 8th is a treat for fans of the puzzle-box mystery."

Death Lies Beneath has also been reviewed on the highly influential magazine, Publishers Weekly who say, "Rowson’s solid eighth police procedural featuring Det. Insp. Andy Horton...convincing characters and a coherent plot bolster a crafty solution to the crimes."

Death Lies Beneath was published by Severn House in hardcover in the UK in July. It has already attracted one excellent book review from Mystery People who said, "This is a fast paced excellent mystery, with an interesting diverse set of characters, and an intriguing hook at the end that has me eagerly awaiting the next instalment in this series.Highly recommended."

A hero with real problems is the key to creating a good crime series says Pauline Rowson

DI Andy Horton has been described as 'an especially good series hero, a likable fellow with plenty of street smarts and the requisite personal baggage - an abrasive supervisor (DCI Lorraine Bliss) and an antagonistic soon to be ex wife.' Booklist (USA) Footsteps on the Shore.

Heroes in detective novels are often ordinary people with their own set of problems and the key to producing a successful crime novel is not necessarily that the hero saves the world, aka James Bond, but that he also learns something about himself along the way. Putting ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances builds tension and readers tend to support characters in which they recognise certain traits they have themselves.

For me it is also important to write the stories I like to read and that is crime and thriller novels that have good strong characters and an intriguing and often complex plot that stimulates 'the little grey cells'. I don't do gratuitous violence and I don't write hard boiled crime. That isn't to say there aren't gory bits in the novels but I am not out to shock but to entertain. And I certainly get great satisfaction when people ask me if my detective Andy Horton is going to get back with his wife, Catherine? Will Andy find out the truth about his mother's disappearance? Who is Andy's father? These are not the main strands of the novels - nine now in the series - but they are the things that have shaped Andy Horton and made him what he is and therefore affect his decisions and his interactions with his colleagues and the villains.

In my view readers want to get stuck into a good crime novel that provides entertainment and a puzzle which they can solve at the same time as caring and feeling for the characters. It is my aim to achieve this in the DI Horton series and in my thrillers. I hope my readers enjoy reading about their exploits as much as I enjoy writing them.

Undercurrent, the ninth in the DI Andy Horton series is published by Severn House and available in hardcover in the UK and the Commonwealth. It will be published in the USA on 1 May 2013 when it will also be available as an ebook.

New venue announced for CSI Portsmouth 2013

I'm delighted that the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard is to be the new venue for the popular one day event, CSI Portsmouth 2013, part of Portsmouth BookFest to be held on Saturday 2 November.

CSI Portsmouth 2013 will be held in the Princess Royal Gallery at the museum, which is one of the settings for the latest DI Horton novel, Undercurrent, published in hardcover in the UK and Commonwealth in January and in the USA in May.

Naval historian Dr Douglas Spalding is found dead in Number One Dock in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard after giving a lecture in the Princess Royal Gallery in the Royal Navy Museum. Detective Superintendent Uckfield of the Major Crime Team is adamant it is suicide. DI Horton is not so sure. Angry and frustrated at the lack of investigation, Horton goes out on a limb to prove he’s right and discovers a cover up at the highest level. Soon Horton begins to find disturbing similarities with his own private investigations into the disappearance of his mother thirty years ago. As he gets closer to the truth someone is determined to prevent it from ever coming out.

CSI Portsmouth, where crime fiction meets crime fact is now in its fourth year and 2013 promises to be as exciting as previous years with some top crime authors and crime experts coming along to entertain us all. The panellists for CSI Portsmouth 2013 will be announced during the year.

The National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth is one of Britain’s oldest maritime museums. Its aim is to preserve and present the history of the Fleet - the ships and the men and women who manned them and to make accessible to all the story of the Royal Navy and its people from earliest times to the present.

The tickets for CSI Portsmouth will also include the added bonus of free entry to exhibitions in the museum.

CSI Portsmouth is part of Portsmouth BookFest a festival of popular literature organised by The Hayling Island Bookshop and Portsmouth City Council and runs from October 19 to 3 November. Its aim is to promote reading for pleasure and enthusiasm for literature in the city of Portsmouth.

You can follow CSI Portsmouth on Twitter and on Facebook.
