Happy Valentine’s Day
The day of love is here! Usually I’m not too thrilled about it, mostly because I’ve never had a boyfriend on Valentine’s, but this year I’m feeling surprisingly good about the whole thing.
I think it’s because I’ve properly planned it out this year for my readers, and have a couple of fun contests planned over on my Facebook Page
February 13, 2017
Snowbound Paranormal-Scope & Contest
When the snow is high, we tend to daydreams of warm beaches with balmy breezes floating over our reclined bodies. Well, I do. Laughs. When snowbound, there are certain paranormals that come out to play. Beware.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
The week for:
Aries:
Yetis are furry and have a fun sense of humor. Engage in laughter with those close. Relax and have fun.
Taurus:
Bigfoot really needs to be warm. Check over your home and make sure you have enough provisions.
Gemini:
Were Turkeys prowl the snow for food. Lock your doors and don’t leave out food for your pets. Feed them indoors.
Cancer:
Werewolves bounce in the snow like puppies. Time for fun whether it’s skiing, skating, sledding, or writing or painting as the snow drifts time. Get inspired for fun.
Leo:
Gnomes love the snow. Time for parties and cooking and snuggling by the fire.
Virgo:
Were bunnies are confused by the snow. This is a confusing time. Lay low and listen to everyone before making any decision.
Libra:
Bear shifters don’t hibernate. They do get romantic. Romance may be in your future.
Scorpio:
Dragons never worry about snow. They can melt out a nice area. Unexpected dragon company is headed your way. Remember they are warmer than their roar.
Sagittarius:
Dragons fly to take a bigger view. It’s time to follow a dream once pushed aside.
Capricorn:
The Hoth Wampa is dangerous intact, but cut off their arm and you have dandy snow scraper for your car. Translation: Cut big projects into parts you can manage.
Aquarius:
Zombies don’t understand the snow and wander aimlessly. If you can’t focus, catch a nap and things will be clearer when you wake up.
Pisces:
Snow Dormice love tea. It’s perfect when you have a freezing day. Unfreeze your heart and have a cuppa. And remember if you give a dormouse tea, you must give them a biscuit.
Contest: Before you leave, follow this link to the party over at The Romance Studio. I am giving away a signed print copy of Vampire King of New York to one commenter who can convince me I should pick them. https://www.trsparties.com/post-3-family-of-fangs-valentines-party-a-carriage-ride-in-central-park-by-susan-hanniford-crowley/

Bad Boys Don’t Care If It’s Valentine’s Day by Ripley Proserpina
Because most of my time not spent reading or writing is now spent watching Gilmore Girls, I’ve started thinking about bad boys.
Gilmore Girls wasn’t a show I watched when it was on t.v.; as a high schooler with a short attention span, the CW had too many commercial breaks for me. Now as a thirty-smmmmm year old, and watching it with actual life experience, I wonder, what is it that makes a guy a bad boy?
So: because I’m nothing if not thorough, I did some research.
First, I dismissed the myths. Leather jackets, slicked back hair, a motorcycle, does not a bad boy make. It’s predictable, and a bad boy is not predictable.
Predictability, or lack thereof, I’ve discovered, is the hallmark of the bad boy. Thinking literarily (which is a word— I double-checked with Merriam Webster), a female character interested in a bad boy is always confused.
What does he want?
Where is he?
Why does he show up at the most unexpected times?
What does he think? Does he love our female main character or hate her?
Take Fitzwilliam Darcy. If Pride and Prejudice was less well known, and Darcy and Elizabeth’s fate not common knowledge, we the reader would be as surprised as she when he proposes.
A bad boy in breeches… sigh.
Our literary bad boys don’t have to be from classic lit either. Edward (Twilight), Gale (Hunger Games), Four (Divergent), Cole (Wolves of Mercy Falls), The Darkling (Grisha Series), Travis Maddox (Beautiful Disaster). All kept our female main character off-balance. All of them kept us guessing. All of them maintained a poker face and the perfect combination of sweetness and assholery.
There is no case to make for the bad boy, because he doesn’t care what we think, and he’s not here to impress us (except… he kind of is. Because here’s the big bad boy secret— he actually does care, and he’s looking for some special girl to finally give him the acceptance he has always yearned for).
So even if he pretends Valentine’s Day is for losers, it might actually melt his cold heart to get one.
Wondering who your bad boy soul mate is? I found some fun quizzes online. Enjoy.

Cover Reveal! by Stacy Hoff
I recently announced the birth of my BUILDING LOVE series, with book 1, BETTING LOVE IN VEGAS, to be released in a few short weeks—March 22nd. It’s very exciting for me to launch this new series, and even more exciting to see to the brand new cover. So without further ado, here it is!
I’m so happy with the way this cover turned out. It captures the location of the story, which is Las Vegas. Each book in the BUILDING LOVE series is set in a different fun/exotic/jaw-dropping destination, so each cover will feature where the story takes place. (Book 2, taking place in the Caribbean, will be released October, 2017.)
Below is the book blurb for BETTING ON LOVE IN VEGAS. Let me know what you think about the cover. Did the cover artist accurately capture the feel of the story? For me, the answer is yes!
Book blurb for BETTING LOVE IN VEGAS
Catherine “Cat” Warner has problems. The profits from her inns are down. The pressure from her parents is up. Her love life is non-existent. But Cat did manage to get the attention of tough, powerful, gorgeous hotel magnate Ty Orland. Unfortunately, his interest in her is for all the wrong reasons. Instead of wanting Cat, this debonair CEO only wants her land—a parcel he desperately needs for his next big development deal. Too bad, it’s not for sale. A people pleaser by nature, Cat knows to stand strong. If she caves in to the demands of this sexy, alluring man, it will be her own neck on the line.
Ty Orland has a lot of things going for him. Success. Power. Respect. Unfortunately, he’s also got an old chip on his shoulder and a new financial nightmare. His development deal is going down in flames—and fast. His only way out is if Cat sells him her strategically located parcel. But romancing the land from her is not easy when love gets in the way. The woman is as beautiful as she is beguiling. And Ty no longer knows which prize is more valuable.

Knowing when to walk away
I wish I could say everything we start as writers ends up as a fantastic book that readers adore and critics rave about. Wouldn’t that be awesome? *pauses to ponder the perfection*
Sadly, it’s far from the truth. First drafts are war. They’re bloody. Our story medics work diligently to tourniquet the worst of the problems as our muses forge onward to the glorious hallowed lands of “The End.”
But when the carnage settles, what we’re left with is often in desperate needs of some editorial TLC. Maybe even some serious rewriting triage. Sometimes, however, what remains should be let go, for its sake and ours.
But how do you know when it’s best to walk away?
I recently found myself in this struggle. It ultimately became what I termed a nuclear writing summit in my brain at about 1:30 a.m. one morning. (I know you fellow writers feel me on this one. These important mental summits ALWAYS happen when we’re trying to sleep, right?). By the time my muse, internal editor and internal time manager concluded their three-way war, the decision was obvious. The story I’d just finished wasn’t worth trying to salvage.
It’s a tough decision. I’m sure that in time I’ll drag the story back out, dust its damaged remains off and resuscitate the idea. But it’ll have to wait until I have time to do so. Decisions like these are never easy.
But in my humble opinion they are necessary. Writing may be a passion, but it is first and foremost a business. Every decision made must contribute to the bottom line. Every delay must be reasonable, necessary and surmountable. That’s how I’m tackling 2017.
It took me quite a while to accept that not every word I write will get published. Not every idea is worth a book. At first I thought the realization would hurt, wound my muse. In truth she’s happy. Relieved. I’ve freed myself from the strangleholds of making a less than book perfect idea work.
What about you? Have you ever walked away from a project or something you started, then realized you shouldn’t have?

No Magic Solution
Each day I wake up, have the flitting thought that I live in a world of chaos and realize that I’m not sure what to do about it. So what do I do? Nothing of course. The truth is it is all a bit overwhelming and I’m sure I’m not alone in that thought. But my aim is to change it.
I work in the financial services industry and quite frankly, the regulation and subject matter in this industry is endless which leaves me in a state of constantly wanting to know or learn more. For the past few months especially (my current role is more learning than ever before), I’ve taken the tactic of one thing at a time. This fits me as I’m one of those folks who handles almost everything this way (eat all my peas first, my meat next, etc.).
Don’t get me wrong, I can panic just as much as the next person over. But I also realize that life is hardly full of magic solutions for anything. The same goes for our world issues – whether big or small. For me, I’m working more towards helping others. I’m starting through volunteer work and my hope is that it can evolve. The hours I spend here and there, aren’t meant to solve all the worlds issues or even a fraction of them, but they do give insight as to what those around me go through and it’s nice to know that I can help
So next time you are feeling like you just can’t handle something, realize that goals and fixes are achieved through hard work and unity. No magic wands but simply someone who starts off saying they don’t want to simply do “nothing” today.
Happy writing this week!

Neverland Paranormal-Scope
When I was young the book that captured me was Peter Pan. From time to time, those close to me called a “Pan,” meaning someone who has never truly grown up. I don’t consider that a bad thing.
Sometimes we need a spark of youth enthusiasm and wonder. Just in case you need Neverland, follow these directions: “second star to the right, and straight on till morning.”
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
The week for:
Aries:
Peter’s courage is boundless. You have new opportunities ahead.
Taurus:
Wendy Darling is a darling and so are you. You are appreciated for what you do for others.
Gemini:
Mermaids sing your praises. You are multi-talented. Be creative and have fun.
Cancer:
Hook is just misunderstood. Yeah, right. Don’t be deceived by those who are not what they seem.
Leo:
Mr. Smee takes orders. It’s time to consider the pros and cons of your career and how to move up.
Virgo:
Tinkerbelle wants more out of life. She wants to live a bigger life. Re-evalute what you really want and want you’re willing to work hard for.
Libra:
Tiger Lily knows trouble when she sees it. Lie low and avoid trouble this week.
Scorpio:
John Darling loves to solve problems. New challenges are coming your way. You are a gifted problem-solver. You will shine.
Sagittarius:
A crocodile with a clock in its stomach is a little obsessed with time. That’s fine for work, but loosen up at home.
Capricorn:
Michael Darling may be small but he has room to grow. He enjoys the wonders of life and every new adventure. Live your life in that light.
Aquarius:
The Lost Boys love adventure but right now the feeling of home is more important. Decorate and make your home warm and comforting.
Pisces:
The Pirates of Captain Hook have nothing better to do. You do. Find your own adventure and be your own captain.

When the Dish Ran Away with the Spoon and Met an Author. By Ripley Proserpina
This week I’m excited to interview author Heather R. Blair. I’m in love with Heather’s books; she writes about my favorite things (shifters, vampires, demons, witches, and… dun dun dun!!!! Mother Goose!). She’s also, hands-down, one of the most amazing world builders I’ve ever read. She makes me want to live in Minnesota. In the winter.
Read on and you’ll see what I mean…
Your first trilogy in this world focused on one sister, Persephone Gosse, and her romance with Jack Frost. What inspired this story?
I don’t know if other authors do this, but I tend to hoard names—names I hear that strike a spark inside me and make me think, Ohhh, I want to do something with that one, someday. ‘Persephone’ was one of those names.
I had also been toying with a series about witches for awhile, but was unclear on the details. Then during NaNoWriMo (National November Writing Month, when a lot of writers, aspiring or otherwise try to write a novel in a month) in 2015, I got the idea to set a series in my town. Not too long after that, I saw a pic on Pinterest of this intriguing blond girl with a pink streak wearing glasses. All of these things kind of coalesced in my head and I got my first line in Seph’s voice: I’m a witch.
Poof, Toil & Trouble was born!
As for Jack, he just came waltzing out of the dark, like in his first scene with Seph. This sexy, mysterious, unknown entity who revealed himself a layer at a time.
Your current world is based off of nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and mythology. Tell me about your world and how all of your characters get along.
In the Toil & Trouble series, magic has been here all along, just out of sight. Most of the fairytales and nursery rhymes you read in this world have basis in truth. Case in point, Seph’s mother is the actual Mother Goose. Her name is Oriane Gosse. In essence, Oriane created witches by harnessing energy through rhyme.
This offended some of the old school FTCs (fairytale creatures) who use elemental magic. Gnomes, elementals (creatures that look human, but are actually the offspring of the gods and magic. Jack Frost is an elemental), sprites, fairies, nymphs, dryads, etc.
Elemental magic comes from within—witch magic mostly from without. While most creatures in the FTC world are content to live and let live, there is some strain there, a type of racism if you will.
Along with witches, vamps and werewolves are also resented, as they were not created of natural elemental magic either. Werewolves are particularly loathed, though a lot of that is their own fault.
For creating this world, I borrowed heavily from various mythologies, mostly Norse, Scandinavian and Gallic. Even the ballet, The Firebird, inspired parts of this series. I also use a lot of pop culture references, most particularly in Seph’s story, as I am a proud card-carrying geek! If you love Doctor Who, The Arrow, Breaking Bad, GOT, Supernatural, etc, you may get a little buzz throughout the stories. There are a lot of musical and literary references as well.
Welcome to the hodgepodge that is my brain. Drinking is optional, but encouraged, lol.
The Toil & Trouble world is growing and expanding with every book. I am what authors call a ‘pantser’—meaning I don’t do elaborate plotting—the story kind of creates itself. But I am good at keeping things straight in my head as my writing worlds are very real to me and I have a rather vivid imagination. I also have an excellent editor who keeps me on point. Thank goodness!
What is in the works for the character in Threescore and Tequila? Tell me about her and will she have more than one book?
Oriane Gosse had 4 daughters. In the first three books, Persephone or Seph, is the focus. She’s the youngest, the baby sister. The other sisters are Ana (Anastasia), Jett and Carly(Carlisle).
Threescore & Tequila focuses on the 2nd oldest sister, Jett. Readers will think they know Jett from the first three books, but prepare to be surprised. Jett has a tangled history and all of it is coming out in this one, including the reason this bad-ass sword-swinger loathes bear shifters. That last is a problem particularly when it comes to Stephen Krueger, a bruin who is convinced Jett belongs to him.
Jett’s story is resolved in this book, and that will be the pattern for Ana and Carly’s books as well.
Do you have a favorite book you’ve written, and which book is it?
Ugh. You do know this is like making me pick a favorite child, right?!
I love all my books for different reasons. Smoke in Moonlight because it was my first, though parts of it make me cringe now, lol. Sixpence & Whiskey because it still makes me laugh no matter how many times I read it and Blood In Fire, because it still makes me cry, no matter how many times I read it. ☺
Aidan O’Neill from BiF is still holding his spot as my favorite of all my characters. A Celtic vampire warrior with a tortured past who looks like Tom Hiddleson and has a wicked sense of humor? Yeah, he gets that crown, lol. I’m currently writing some scenes with Aidan in the upcoming Lightning In Sea, the final book in that trilogy, and he’s got me all aflutter again.
But in the end, the entire Toil & Trouble series is my hands-down favorite of all my books. I’m just so excited about how the pieces are all coming together and I think the last few books are going to blow my readers’ minds! ☺
My personal favorite of your characters is Styx- without giving too much away for people who may want to read your earlier trilogy, will he get his own story or see more screen time in this story? Why are your characters so nervous around him?
Ahhh, Styx. The silver-haired, golden-eyed mystery. He is rather intriguing and trust me, everyone has good reason for those nerves.
Styx is based loosely on Mishipishu, an Ojibwe legend unique to the Great Lakes area. The stories say he is a lake monster who can shift into a lethal lynx-like form. The reality of our Styx is somewhat different.
He’s more than a shifter, more than a god and has a story all his own. That’s all I can say at the moment, sorry!
And yes, he will briefly make an appearance in Threescore & Tequila, but the bulk of his story comes in Carly’s book, Magpies & Moonshine, out later this year, after the fifth book, Déjà Vu & Gin.
Because Heather is super awesome- she’s given us a snippet from her book Threescore & Tequila!
I reach for the soap, then hesitate as something odd catches my eye. A crooked arrow is inked into his forearm. It’s ugly. Not at all like his other ones. Dark and smudged, almost like a burn. He frowns when he sees where my gaze has fallen, dropping his arm into his lap. Okay . . . not going there. Instead, my eyes trail up to his shoulder and this time I can’t help myself.
“What’s this?” I trace a symbol I’ve never seen before, about the size of my palm on his left shoulder. An upside-down triangle with dead-black lines meeting at the apex.
“It’s called a dragon’s eye.” His voice deepens as he watches my fingers on his skin.
I pull my hand back. “Looks like something a Harry Potter fan would ask for.”
He blinks, then grins. “Actually, this would be a decent choice if Harry got tatted up. The inverted triangle symbolizes a threat, and these lines”—he taps the Y-shaped intersection at the shape’s heart—“indicate a choice between good and evil.”
Another shiver runs over the back of my neck. I hide it by soaping him down a bit more roughly than I should. He doesn’t flinch. “Aww, what kind of a threat does a big ol’ shifter like yourself have to worry about?”
Those blue eyes lift to mine. “I’m looking at it.”
I freeze, unable to break his stare for the space of a long, slow heartbeat. Then I pick up my razor. “You’re not wrong, furface.”
He only smiles as the blade comes down.
Thank you to Heather for answering all of my questions, especially the one about Styx because he’s a sexy beast and I want him to be mine.
Heather’s Author Bio:
Heather R. Blair wrote her first book in the first grade and hasn’t stopped since. Back then it all about horses, now it’s pretty much the dark, sexy and shivery.
She lives in the frozen north of Minnesota, near that big gorgeous lake called Superior and enjoys hiking when the snow melts. She also does murals, rides herd on four monsters (otherwise known as children, ages 9-19), is slightly obsessed with Martin Freeman, British television and other geeky things that go bump in the night.
She loves reading (duh!) and interacting with other bibliophiles and authors
