Running Down a Dream By Ripley Proserpina
It’s that day. The day after I finish a book. Finishing a book is magical. I’ve been running a marathon, creating conflicts, solving them, the story reaches a climax and then?
Solved.
Everyone kisses and it’s the end. There have been times when I’ve written the end and literally collapsed back in my chair. Such relief! No matter what, the ending surprises me, and sometimes, I never expect to get there.
I can’t tell you about the book I just finished. Not yet. It’s a secret project with other authors, otherwise I’d fill you in for sure, but since there’s more than me, I’m locking it up.
But the day after I finish a book is hard. Because this is the day when I have to start the new one. I’m firmly in the camp of, “make writing a habit.” I don’t write when I’m in the mood, or when the weather is perfect, or when all these little boxes must be checked. Unless my head is pounding or my people need my full attention, I write every day.
And when I’m not writing, I’m telling myself, “You should be writing.”
Right this very minute, I have half a page of the beginning of a new book. It’s not going well. For one thing, I had all these lovely plans, and as soon as I let my character touch the page, she had other plans. Kumiko is a fiery little thing, and I have a feeling I’m about to scrap my notes.
Wish me luck everyone.
In other, more business-y news, the first books in two of my series are on sale for .99. Check them out!

How to Write A Fiction Novel, Part 1
[image error]
We begin with a pause. That’s my granddaughter Penny decorating the Christmas tree. Why the pause? Because it’s important for writers to live life. Besides you never know when it will show up in a book. Your life, your advertures, and your dreams are are tinder to start the fire of your story.
How do you write a fiction novel?
Some will tell you to get your workplace and materials together and establish a set time. All those things are good. But some of us write everywhere and switch between modalities like tablet to laptop or desktop or writing in a journal. Whatever works, works.
The mechanics away, let’s begin with the truth of it. Books begin with an idea. It may come in a dream but it’s still an idea or story line that captivates you. If you dream, start a dream journal.
If not, write down in a notebook everything that excites you. Any phrase that captivates [image error]you. Anything you see that suddenly becomes a story in your mind.
My book When Love Survives started with a dream. That first image was Georgia in New York City looking in a store window at a coat she couldn’t afford. A hand reached in and took the coat, and the dream of a new coat was dashed. She’d lost her job and would soon be homeless. Spotting his reflection in the glass, she was startled. Was he watching her?
Growing up I’d had lots of experience looking at the beautiful and magical windows in Manhattan during Christmas. So that was a seed from life that was planted.
That one image grew and took shape in my dreams very face and formed into the store. When you get something like that you are duty bound to wake up and write it down as fast as you can. Write everything. Edit later. You don’t want to miss out on anything.
If you are writing your book along with us and starting out, begin by writing down those ideas, dreams, phrases, images. If one sparks your imagination, begin your story. Let it lead you.
I’ve told you how to begin. Next week. We will continue.
For those interested in When Love Survives, see below. Thank you.

Post-Thanksgiving Bliss by Stacy Hoff
I hope everyone in the United Stated enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving. Time away from work. And time for family, food, and laughter.
For me, Thanksgiving is especially wonderful, because it’s right around the time of my birthday. Turkey and presents. What could be better?
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend, everyone!
Book blurb for HOTTER THAN THE CARIBBEAN (Building Love #2)
Luis Serrano, the unwanted love child of a hotel construction magnate, is determined to reach his father’s level of success. When Luis finds himself pitted against his half-brother for control over their ailing father’s company, sibling rivalry comes to a head. The stakes are high—the brother that best completes their portion of the Caribbean construction project will gain control over the entire company. To win, Luis hires an interior design firm. But the firm will have to perform difficult work under serious time constraints.
Melanie Merritt is used to sibling rivalry. She’s always been second best to her older sister, the “golden child” of their parent’s interior design firm. Melanie’s desire is to be an artist. She works for her family to appease them. Her newest task is to implement a complex project for Luis Serrano in an impossibly short deadline. If she fails, her family’s company may go bankrupt. But Melanie can’t keep her too-creative ideas away from her family, and the client.
Completing work on time won’t be easy. Especially when dual sibling rivalries threaten to destroy the project—and a passion hotter than the Caribbean.

Ty Orland has a lot of things going for him. Success. Power. Respect. Unfortunately, he’s also got an old chip on his shoulder and a new financial nightmare. His development deal is going down in flames—and fast. His only way out is if Cat sells him her strategically located parcel. But romancing the land from her is not easy when love gets in the way. Why Give?
I love Thanksgiving! I wish we were all a bit more giving throughout the rest of the year but I’d still take a season or holiday of giving over no giving any day of the week. During this time of year, I usually spend a bit of time talking about what I am most thankful for and quite frankly, I find that each year that list seems to grow and grow.
This year, I’d like to spend some time talking about helping others be thankful—both by setting a good example or simply imparting some words/thoughts of wisdom. I think we can all agree why this is important—being more thoughtful about giving to others and thankful for what we do have makes a difference. We see this every holiday season as folks tend to be in better moods (except when fighting over last minute purchases in the stores). I’m at a point now where I’m trying to explain to my 5 and 3 year olds why it is important to share. It’s interesting (and probably a topic for another day) but I never gave much thought to how innately selfish we can be as humans. For those of you with kids, I’m sure “mine” was one of those first words in their vocabulary along with mama and papa. It shouldn’t surprise me but it does as I don’t believe I think of many folks I meet as selfish.
So how do we go about spreading this feeling of giving? I’m not going to set rules there. At the end of the day, I think we all need to do what is most important to us and what makes us feel different or like we are imparting change. This could come in the form of “Pay it forward” acts or donations of time, money and gifts. This could also come in teach others about the meaning of “Thanksgiving” and why it is an important time of the year. Whatever you choose, good luck and feel good!
Happy writing this week and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Snow And Seduction. By Ripley Proserpina
[image error]
I don’t know about where you are, but in Vermont, we’ve already had our first snow fall. In fact, I had to reroute my travel plans because of the icy roads.
I should be used to the cold and snow, but each time it comes, I end up being surprised. The types of books I read in the weather changes, too. Sultry summer romances take a back seat for darker tales. Whether these are mysteries, or classics about Russian winters, I need a certain type of story when the cold sets in.
And apparently I’m not the only one. Recently, author CM Stunich invited me to be in an anthology, Snow and Seduction. This Tuesday, November 21st, the anthology releases, and CM agreed to be interviewed for this blog about her new releases, and the winter anthology. Enjoy!
For people who aren’t familiar with your work, you’re a prolific author, and you write both contemporary and paranormal romance. How is going back and forth between each one? Do you have to be in a certain mood? Listen to a certain kind of music?
Oh, I love writing all sorts of different genres! As long as the book includes romance in some way, shape, or form then I’ll write it: new adult, young adult, romance, reverse harem, erotica, motorcycle clubs, werewolves, rock stars, etc. Switching between contemporary and paranormal isn’t difficult for me because I’m always more concerned with character development and relationships (not just romantic but familial relationships and friendships, too) than the outer packaging the story comes wrapped in. As long as there are interesting, dynamic people involved, I can get into any story. I do make a playlist for each book I write (check me out on Spotify:
https://open.spotify.com/user/12101321503
), and the music definitely varies A LOT between books, whether they’re paranormal or not. I prefer reading paranormal myself, but when it comes to my writing, I’m equally happy either way! I am particularly excited though about the new adult/reverse harem werewolf romance I just released called “Pack Violet Shadow.” It’s book two in the series, but both book two and book one are free with Kindle Unlimited AND they’re decently long reads: 357 and 400 pages. If you like werewolves, vampires, dark fae, demons, intrigue, action, and steamy scenes with seven hot alpha male werewolves, check it out! My other favorite thing to do right now is co-write! I’ve been lucky enough to work with the talented Tate James, and I have to say–we have both paranormal AND contemporary projects in the works.

A Word on Book Piracy from Romance Author Ashlyn Chase
(This post appeared on Facebook and is reposted here with the author’s permission. This [image error]is how important I think it is! – Susan)
Please don’t spew hate on me…I’m trying to HELP authors with this post. I just started using a service called Blasty to search out and take down my books from pirate sites. Here’s what I noticed.
The book pirated the most was offered for free for only two days. It was an Indie freebie that I arranged, hoping to sell its sequel. The sequel didn’t sell much. But Blasty found 10 pages of pirate sites that have been giving away the first book for free for several months. That’s 10 pages with about 10 warnings per page…about 100 pirates.
Everyone… Please take heed. Indie authors are spending money to publish a quality book. They spend their own money on an editor, a cover artist, and often pricey advertising. It may take months to recoup that money, and to steal their books is not only illegal, but morally reprehensible.
Authors, PLEASE don’t give your books away for free. It feeds these pirate sites and hurts all of us. Readers can only read so many books. I have hundreds of books on my Kindle and Nook, and I BOGO (Buy One, Get One free.) Every time I get a book which the author or publisher offers for free, I buy one. I am sure to die with a huge TBR pile as are many avid readers.
So, there it is. Warning given. Public educated. I’ve said my peace. I hope some of you will listen. This technique used to work. Now it does more harm than good. At least think about it.
See Ashlyn’s books on her author page on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Ashlyn-Chase/e/B002BOJ4FK
Thank you, Ashlyn.
Note from Susan:
It’s been shown that on some pirate sites, clicking on links to download the book file, can be hazardous. A file could be corrupt or contain a virus.
For authors: This site at WikiHow gives advice on protecting your work and what to do if you are pirated. https://www.wikihow.com/Combat-Book-Piracy

Samanthya Wyatt Tells A Powerful Story by Stacy Hoff
Hello Passionate readers! Today on Nights of Passion I have author Samanthya Wyatt talking about what makes a powerful story!
The power of your story is in the character’s true emotions. The reader wants to be involved with the characters. Wants to be the character. Living the life of the character in her/his dreams. A writer draws the reader in, portraying personal emotions or characters’ feelings about an experience or situation.
Have I accomplished this?
I certainly hope so. All I ever wanted was to see my book sitting on a shelf in the book store. As a beginner, I had so much to learn. First, I had to make my MS the best it could be. Once I joined RWA, I took workshops and gained a wealth of information. I grew as a writer. When I finally finished my first historical romance, I was thrilled to send it off with the hope, like everyone else, I wanted to be published. In 2013 I signed my first contract with Soul Mate Publishing.
Since 2014, I’ve published seven romance novels in historical and contemporary. I write hot, sizzling romance. Each of my books have a beginning and a romantically satisfying end for my characters happily ever after. Nothing is left hanging. I love the idea of a connection from a previous book.
In the first book of my historical trilogy, “The Right One”, Katherine’s brother is missing. Book two, The True One, is Stephen’s story—why he was gone for two years, what happened to him, and a love story all his own. Book three, The Only One, is about the duke who was introduced in the first book and rescues Kat’s brother in the second book.
My contemporaries feature strong characters, a tad of suspense, and a fulfilling ending. I get a lot of joy from creating new characters and bringing them together in a romantic tale. My characters have depth, emotional investments, life-threatening challenges. The power of a story is in the character’s true emotions. The reader wants to be in the moment. Feel what the characters feel – emotionally. I try to give this to my readers. My scenes may be steamy, but hopefully I have written the scene in a way that goes beyond just doing the deed.
My newest release is Instant Enticement. Read on for an excerpt!
A naked woman in the shower . . .
Craig couldn’t believe his eyes. A practical joke on his friend turned out to be a naked beauty standing before him in all her fine glory. He was too shocked for words. A man who had his share of women, suddenly found himself speechless before this exotic creature. She was an aching temptation. Surrendering to his passion could cost him his best friend. Yet, he yearned to taste, to touch . . . but she was hands off.
Kelly has given upon men. Once she’d been young, beautiful, full of life, and way too trusting. But her last relationship changed all that. All men were liars—except for her best friend. The only man she would ever trust. At least that’s what she thought . . . until she met his best friend, Craig. He turned her world upside down and had her rethinking her vow. She yearns to taste the ecstasy his dark eyes promise. But he holds back. And now she must convince him she is innocent of betrayal.
I’m very excited about my latest book. Instant Enticement has a surprise, twist ending with some delightful characters. I write because I enjoy it. And because I hope to give someone else the pleasure of a romance. Whether you want to escape reality or just live in the moment of fantasy, I hope you will enjoy a few hours of reading one of my books.
Please enjoy this short excerpt:
Kelly drew a deep breath. She gathered her composure, pondering Robert’s face when she confronted him. She stood beside the table for long excruciating seconds before he noticed her presence.
Robert glanced up, obviously expecting a waitress. His eyes filled with disbelief. His astonishment quickly changed to anger. A piece of her heart splintered when the smile on his face turned formidable.
“Hello, Robert.” Thank God her voice sounded normal.
She was no stranger to his moods. His tense body reminded her of a caged lion ready to spring. The truth hit her like a Mack Truck. Guilt. Robert had lied to her. It was written all over his face. She turned to the woman sitting across from him.
“Hello,” she said with a degree of courteous formality. “I’m Kelly.” From the corner of her eye, she saw Robert stand.
“Excuse me, Miss, uh, Kelly.”
Miss. Had he forgotten her name? Squirm, you bastard.
“I’m having a private dinner,” he said. “Maybe we can talk in my office. Would you call me tomorrow?”
Without taking her eyes from the woman who’d been silent the entire time, Kelly replied, “I’d be happy to call you tomorrow, Robert. If you introduce me to your companion and tell me who the hell she is.”
The woman flushed and her eyes darted to Robert. “Yes. I’d like an introduction as well.”
Robert grasped Kelly’s arm and she immediately shook it loose, which caused her to stagger back a step. So much for being levelheaded.
“Kelly.” His voice cracked like thunder. “Please leave.” It wasn’t a request. He was furious. The veins in his neck stood out. What the hell was he so angry about? He was the one two-timing her. Shame and anger took over her common sense.
“Not until you tell me why you cancelled our date and I find you here with her.” Kelly’s voice grew louder until she practically shouted. On the last word, she flung out one hand and pointed an accusing finger directly to the woman dining with him.
The woman’s faced reddened, in anger or embarrassment, Kelly couldn’t tell.
“I’m his wife. Who are you?”

Samanthya Wyatt bio
Samanthya lives with her husband in the Shenandoah Valley. She left her accounting career and married a military man traveling and making her home in the United States and abroad. Once she found historical romance novels, she couldn’t put a book down. She fell in love with the characters and needed to know their happy ending.
One day she put words to paper creating a story of her own. The more she wrote, the more she became involved with the characters, and they seemed to take a life of their own. She relishes the challenge of penning a story with strong characters, a bit of humor, and active scenes. She enjoys creating new characters and bringing them together in a romantic tale. It took years of writing, joining RWA, joining chapters, entering contests, submissions& rejections which created the author she is today. By keeping her spirit and turning criticism into drive she has achieved her career as a published romance author.

Why Fiction?
I am an absolute romantic… surprise, surprise. Now notice I didn’t say hopeless romantic. I love romance but I also realize that at times (and I know this really is many times) real life doesn’t work out the way life works in the romance novels. I vaguely remember reading a book in which the heroine is obsessed with Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. This is nothing new but in this version, the heroine actually met him only to realize there was a lot she didn’t like. He was stiff and proper to a fault, a bit too traditional—she had fallen in love with the idea of romance versus the actual man himself.
Does this mean we all need to be practical and stop living in the clouds? Well, that is a personal decision we each make. I had an acquaintance tell me recently that she didn’t read fiction because her husband thought fiction “stupid” as it didn’t really have much value in the day to day of life. I told her I disagreed and thought fiction and non-fiction served two very different purposes. Non-fiction can be educational in most cases but fiction can open doors to completely new worlds. With all the chaos of our world, this can prove very rewarding at times.
I spend most of my days doing calculations and speaking to folks about their finances. I love the conversations and helping others but I also find that my opportunities to read or write fiction reach a different part of me. I love the escape, the flexing of my imagination as I either create or encounter new worlds and characters. That doesn’t mean I don’t ground myself in reality. It just means that I believe we need a balance of both. We are about to enter a season where much of what we see and experience and feel is based on spirit and “magic.” Even still, many folks love this time of year.
There are so many real forces we struggle with—war, money, greed, politics, etc.—each day that quite frankly, I believe many of us could use more fiction as an outlet.
Happy writing this week!
