Release Recovery by Stacy Hoff
October 18th marked the release of Building Love #2, HOTTER THAN THE CARIBBEAN, my sexy contemporary romance series with a soap-opera twist. I’m taking some time to celebrate this moment.
I’ve actually got even more celebrating to do. I just received my contract for book # 3 in the “Building Love” series. Even better—I finally came up with the title. I will reveal the name very soon!
Is there any rest for the weary? Heck, no. Besides, I’m way to excited to rest anyway.
For those new to the “Building Love” series, here’s a bit about the books:
HOTTER THAN THE CARIBBEAN – In the Caribbean, the secrets, sex, and scandals are hotter!
Book blurb for HOTTER THAN THE CARIBBEAN (Building Love #2)
Luis Serrano, the unwanted love child of a hotel construction magnate, is determined to reach his father’s level of success. When Luis finds himself pitted against his half-brother for control over their ailing father’s company, sibling rivalry comes to a head. The stakes are high—the brother that best completes their portion of the Caribbean construction project will gain control over the entire company. To win, Luis hires an interior design firm. But the firm will have to perform difficult work under serious time constraints.
Melanie Merritt is used to sibling rivalry. She’s always been second best to her older sister, the “golden child” of their parent’s interior design firm. Melanie’s desire is to be an artist. She works for her family to appease them. Her newest task is to implement a complex project for Luis Serrano in an impossibly short deadline. If she fails, her family’s company may go bankrupt. But Melanie can’t keep her too-creative ideas away from her family, and the client.
Completing work on time won’t be easy. Especially when dual sibling rivalries threaten to destroy the project—and a passion hotter than the Caribbean.

BETTING ON LOVE IN VEGAS – Love is the biggest gamble of all
Book blurb for BETTING ON LOVE IN VEGAS (Building Love #1)
Catherine “Cat” Warner has problems. The profits from her inns are down. The pressure from her parents is up. Her love life is non-existent. But Cat did manage to get the attention of tough, powerful, gorgeous hotel magnate Ty Orland. Unfortunately, his interest in her is for all the wrong reasons. Instead of wanting Cat, this debonair CEO only wants her land—a parcel he desperately needs for his next big development deal. Too bad, it’s not for sale. A people pleaser by nature, Cat knows to stand strong. If she caves in to the demands of this sexy, alluring man, it will be her own neck on the line.
Ty Orland has a lot of things going for him. Success. Power. Respect. Unfortunately, he’s also got an old chip on his shoulder and a new financial nightmare. His development deal is going down in flames—and fast. His only way out is if Cat sells him her strategically located parcel. But romancing the land from her is not easy when love gets in the way. The woman is as beautiful as she is beguiling. And Ty no longer knows which prize is more valuable.

Prize and a Treat
And now the long awaited winner of the $20.00 Amazon gift card…
I spent this past weekend in Charleston—a city I love simply due to the history and the coastal aesthetic of the homes there. It falls among several places I’ve been where you can truly feel the history as you walk the streets. Venice and Florence (or quite frankly Italian cities in general) made me feel very much this way as well. It was as if I could picture what happened hundreds of years ago right then and there.
But today isn’t a blog about history. It is a blog about indulgence. I’m writing about indulgence as my weekend in Charleston felt very much an indulgence. Charleston is expensive and while my family and I aren’t poor, we aren’t wealthy either so my indulgences weren’t in the forms of expensive artwork, extravagant dinners and relaxing spa days. My indulgences came in the form of a day off of work, strolling through the market street outdoor market, playing with my kids at a park on East Bay Street and perhaps one slightly extravagant dinner (and yes it was delicious!).
So why does this even matter? Why is it important to have what we term indulgences? Well, quite frankly I know many of us work very hard. If you are a parent (or even a son/daughter) taking care of others, most often than not, you are putting them first and a day turns into a week which turns into a month and then a year and before you know it, you realize you haven’t taken time for yourself in ages. And perhaps by this point you are just a bit grumpy and not very fun to be around—not to mention the toll all this stress takes on your person.
So, moral of today, take some time for you, treat yourself! Happy Writing this week and hope you enjoyed your Halloween and our wonderful Spooktacular!

Halloween Paranormal-Scope
Rain, floods, and lightening strikes fill the air from the night before giving today an energy for uncertainty.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
The week for:
Aries:
Demigorgon is running down the road. Don’t focus on negativity or you add to it’s energy.
Taurus:
Loup Garou comes in other restaurant where you’re eating and order his steak rare. Time to re-examine what you’ve been eating and is it beneficial to you.
Gemini:
Godzilla has the worse time finding shoes. Get recommendations from friends and invest in really good footwear.
Cancer:
Swamp monster is enjoying the weather. Taking a nice cool bath is so relaxing for him. Consider going to a spa. You need to relax more.
Leo:
Mummies are enjoying the high life in New Orleans these days, so cross off that problem from your worry list. Now the list is shorter. Don’t you feel better?
Virgo:
Listening to jazz keeps the Axeman away from your door. Expand your interest in music. Buy some CDs to add to your collection.
Libra:
Vampires are fond of candy. Apparently it doesn’t bother their fangs. Your teeth are another matter. Be sure to keep up with your dental appointments.
Scorpio:
The Loch Ness Monster knows how to keep secrets. Don’t do anything you would regret, and buy flowers to give to a friend.
Sagittarius:
Frankensteins ‘s monster is still out there. Someone from your past is going to show up.
Capricorn:
Yetis are cave dwellers because they need peace and quiet to invent. So do you. Cherish your me time.
Aquarius:
Zombies running away from you. This is your lucky week.
Pisces:
The Headless Horseman has been seen in your area. Keep a low profile and hopefully he’ll head back to Sleepy Hollow.

Candy…corn, Candy..man, Candy…clowns. An Author Interview by Ripley Proserpina
This week, I talked more scary stuff with author Rebecca Royce. Rebecca writes science fiction, paranormal romance, urban fantasy… you name it, she’s done it, and done it well.
As part of the blog’s Halloween Spooktacular, I will be giving away an ebook copy of Rebecca’s book, Strange Days, and an ebook copy of my book, Matched with the Demon. All you have to do to enter is like the post, and comment with your favorite traditional scary story. Sleepy Hollow? Jenny and the Green Ribbon? The Hitchhiker? I’ll choose a winner and announce it on next week’s blog.
I’m a fan of the scary. When I was a kid, I had this book Scary Stories Not to be Told After Dark. It was illustrated with these weird, pencil sketches where the characters seemed to be disintegrating. And my favorite story? The Bride.
You’ve probably heard it before. It’s the wedding day of the unnamed bride and groom, and for some completely wacko reason, they decide to play hide and seek.
The bride finds the perfect spot.
In the attic.
In a steamer trunk.
You can guess the rest… but the best part was the illustration at the end of a skeleton bride in her tattered, rotted wedding dress. I even found it for you… apparently I’m not the only one this story has stuck with. All I had to Google was “bride” and “scary stories” and there it was.
Finally, for my last spookish post, Rebecca answered my questions about her books, and her favorite scary things.
You wrote a paranormal romance series, Strange Days, where the characters biggest fears are manifested physically. One of those fears was a clown. What do you think are the scariest creatures?
Clowns are what scare the ever-loving pants off my big tough, six foot four husband. That’s why I picked them. But what scares me? Demons. Like the possess you in your sleep, wake up with pea soup coming out of your nose demons.
What is your very favorite scary story?
The Exorcist, but to read? It’s got to be The Stand by Stephen King.
I am traditionally scared by things that I can’t control. The idea that there are things out there that could simply hurt you because they want to, that aren’t a result of your choices, are what scare me as an adult.
As a kid, I was terrified of the movie Candyman because as soon as we watched it the girls I saw it with and I went to the mirror and said it three times. I was convinced that bug filled nightmare was coming for me.
But, as an adult, I, number one, don’t believe in Candyman. (The Candyman Can! Gene Wilder.) But, if I did, that I can control. I simply wouldn’t say it. Period. Not three times anyway. (Candyman. Candyman. Candyman). I think that’s why things like The Exorcist and The Stand by Stephen King frighten me. Girl is asleep. She gets possessed. That’s terrifying. Even if it’s not me possessed. What if it were one of my kids? Or a virus kills everyone like The Stand.
That’s what frightens me. What I can’t control.
You’ve written about demons and zombies, vampires and werewolves. Do you have a favorite group? If so, why? If not, what do you love about each of them, and how do you make them your own?
Werewolves have always been good to me as an author so I’ll say them but I do love a vampire, too. I’ve never written about zombies. Hmmm. There’s a thought.
What do you think is the hardest paranormal group to write about?
Vampires, because they’re done so much.
In Strange Days, the characters had to save the world from demons. Now, what will they be doing this Halloween?
Staying in unless they have to go save people. Halloween is like any other night to them.

Void where prohibited by law.
Good luck!
EXERPT FROM THE CURSE OF THE BRIMSTONE CONTRACT
She started on the desk. She had read enough magazine mystery stories to guess she should look for hidden compartments. She opened each drawer and felt around the sides, bottom and top. She even resorted to polite taps. Nothing sounded hollow.
“Here,” Sherringford whispered, and she rushed to his side. He had his light shining on a blank spot on the side of the tall wooden file cabinet set in the back corner of the office.
“There?” she frowned. Nothing was there. “Nothing could be here. This is only our old receipts and orders.”
Sherringford placed his palm on the side of the cabinet. “This space is unaccounted for inside the filing cabinet. The drawer only goes back halfway. Something is hidden in this empty space.”
She tilted her head. That made sense. “How do we open it? Do we pull out the drawer?” That would be noisy.
“That would be the easy way, which is not open to us.” He sighed. “I can sense that it is sealed with a spell, the same way I could sense magic in your pendant. I can break it but I need your help.”
“Whatever you need.”
“Ah, be careful what you offer, Joan Krieger. You don’t know your value,” he whispered as he took her hand yet again. “I need to prick your finger and draw blood.”
“Blood?”
They were so close that she felt his breath caress her cheek. He looked strange and fey, so unlike the detached scientist of earlier in the day or the earthy workman he had played.
As Sir August’s smile and touch made her recoil, Sherringford’s touch made her hum inside.
Simple biology, she scolded herself. He was young, attractive and intelligent. Two things, perhaps even three, that Sir August was not.
“Yes, blood,” he said. “This is a blood seal, and we’ll need blood to break it.”
“Why not yours?”
“This place is more yours than mine. Your blood has a better chance of working.”
“Oh.” She cleared her throat. “Is this magic?”
“There’s no time to explain,” he said. “Are you afraid to prick your finger, girl?”
And just like that, her temporary enchantment with him vanished. “I have pricked my fingers with needles many times, sir. That holds no terror for me.”
“Give me your palm.”
He encircled her wrist with his fingers. She swallowed, almost shivering. It was not his touch. Now that she was close to the cabinet, she sensed something wrong and dangerous in the room. Now, why had she not sensed that before? Was it because she usually was focused on placating her father while in his office? She tended to linger at the doorway, in case a quick escape was needed.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Sherringford tapped her finger with something sharp. She barely felt it. That finger had plenty of sewing calluses. Still keeping a light hold on her wrist, he eased her hand to the blank space on the cabinet. She let out a deep breath as he tapped the space with the bloody tip of her finger. He chanted something under his breath. Not English, not German, not Hebrew. It was in a language completely unfamiliar to her.
Something grabbed at her hand, as if icy claws fought to skewer it. Agony stabbed into her palm. She stiffened and bit back a scream.
“Courage, Joan. Trust me.”
The urge to run screaming into the night increased as her hand felt as if it were being turned to stone, finger by finger. Her head began pounding, and her throat grew thick, rendering her incapable of words. She could not scream. Words could not escape.
She closed her eyes and concentrated on the feel of Sherringford’s hands on her. The icy claws couldn’t be real. She was afraid…she had had many shocks this week…she was imagining a threat where there was none.
Or, this was magic, not illusion. But Sherringford was her protector and he would handle this. Yes. Focus. Think of the pendant and how it would keep her safe.
Sherringford chanted again.
The cold and the pain that seemed ready to slash her hand to ribbons vanished.
Sherringford cursed. “Damn. ‘Too eager, boy,’ as my mother would say. I have done you a horrible disservice, Miss Krieger.”
“Does that mean the cold grip on my hand was real? And that my ordeal was for nothing?”
“Real. A magical trap.” He pried her hand off the file cabinet.
She flexed her fingers, assuring herself she was whole and uninjured.
“The hidden door is carefully warded,” he said.
“If by warded, you mean it tries to injure or kill anyone trying to get in, I would agree, sir. What now?”
“You go back to your bed. I have more research to do, obviously, before trying this again.”
“You aren’t leaving without further explanation, Mr. Sherringford.”
Sherringford grabbed her elbow. “Down!” He pulled her underneath the desk with him.
They squashed together under the desk. She heard the footsteps coming down the hall. She clutched Sherringford tighter. This was a ridiculous hiding place. Surely, whoever had been clever enough to put a hidden magical compartment in the file cabinet would see them cowering under the desk. Not to mention the fact that it had been a mage who had booby-trapped it. And now a desk was somehow protection against a mage?
But Sherringford seemed unconcerned. His breathing was deep and even. His arms were tight around her and his mouth was right next to her ear, close enough that she heard him whisper something in the same strange language as when he had tried to open the invisible door.
Again, his odd words had the sound of a chant or prayer.
Inky darkness began to surround them.
Her eyes had adjusted to the dim light in the room but now there was nothing to be seen at all. It was pitch-black. It was almost as if they were the only ones who existed in this void. No desk, no floor, just…nothing.

Spooktacular Recipe
First off, Happy Halloween Spooktacular and welcome to the week-long celebration on Nights of Passion where we talk reading, writing, life and everything Halloween. And to top this celebration off, we will be raffling off prizes! Enjoy and don’t forget to check back in from now until the 31st of October for all the great prizes we’ll be giving away! You have until the 31st of October at 12 p.m. Eastern time to enter and win.
And now for this week’s blog, I have a couple things to share. The first, I mentioned a couple blogs ago… I’m in the midst of really enjoying this fall season. My family and I moved from the desert to the east coast a few months ago and let’s just say the holidays came early to my house. That being said, I’ve done a lot of experimenting and wanted to share a pumpkin bar recipe that has been a big hit in my household:
TK’s Pumpkin Pie Bars:
Ingredients:
Bar crust:
1 cup
all-purpose flour
½ cup
old-fashioned or instant oats
½ cup
packed brown sugar
½ cup
butter or margarine, softened
Pumpkin pie filling:
1 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk (this makes it creamier)
1 pie pumpkin (or a 15-ounce can of pure pumpkin puree)
1 12-ounce can of evaporated milk
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon
¼ teaspoon of ground cloves
¼ teaspoon of nutmeg
¼ teaspoon of ground ginger
¼ teaspoon salt
Bar crust:
To make the crust: Preheat oven to 350° F. Line a 9×13 inch pan with foil or parchment paper and lightly spray with cooking spray. Combine flour, oats, brown sugar and butter in small mixer bowl. Beat at low speed until mixture is combined and crumbly. Press into the bottom of your 9×13 inch pan and bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven. You can get creative hear by adding toasted pecans and combining all of these in the food processor.
Pumpkin Filling:
In a small bowl, whisk the spices and salt. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs. Whisk in the vanilla and sweetened condensed milk, then whisk in the pumpkin puree and the evaporated milk until smooth. If you are using a real pie pumpkin you will need to cut it in half, clean out the seeds and place it cut side down in about 1 inch of water. I then roast it in the oven for about 40-45 minutes and let it cool before I scoop out the pumpkin and puree it. It is a bit of extra work but it is soooo worth it!
Pour the filling into the crust and bake for 35-40 minutes or until the filling is fully set. You can get more creative by adding a pecan or struesel topping about half way through the baking process. I personally love the taste of the pumpkin and don’t like to overly sweet.
Once it is done, transfer the pan to a rack and let cool completely. Cut into bars and serve with whipped cream.
I’ve spent the past few weeks baking these (off and on) along with other recipes. They are a great treat and I highly recommend sharing them with friends and family this Halloween. And speaking of Halloween, do you all have plans this year and if so, what are they?
This year, I will be sitting out on my driveway with food and treats to share with family and friends. I love watching kids come by all dressed up. My two little ones have chosen to be an entomologist (I know!) and Zorro.
And now for the fun part. For those of you who have stuck with me this far here is the contest:
Please share your Halloween plans in the comments (along with your email) and you’ll be entered in a random raffle to win a $20.00 Amazon gift card. This contest is worldwide (as long as I can email you an Amazon gift card) and ends at midnight Eastern Time on Oct. 31, 2017. Winners will be announced on November 1st. Void where prohibited by law. Good luck and thanks for sharing!
