My Own Caribbean Nights by Stacy Hoff

News of Puerto Rico’s devastation from September’s Hurricane Maria had been difficult to watch. I hope this magnificent island keeps on recovering. I feel connected to PR; I must have visited at least a half-dozen times. I’ve been going there for vacation since I was five years old. My mother had the travel bug, and I was lucky enough to tag along.

About a year ago, I decided to set the story for my newest release, HOTTER THAN THE CARIBBEAN (Building Love #2), in PR. Writing about San Juan and Condado Beach felt comfortable, familiar, and exciting.

This past summer, my mom and I went to the Dominican Republic for the first time. (The pictures here are all ones that I took.)

I found out that the sites and sounds of this wonderful country are quite similar to Puerto Rico, its next-door neighbor. I was tempted to take a little-known ferry traveling between DR and PR in honor of HOTTER’s upcoming release.

My mother and I explored the Dominican’s Santo Domingo and Punta Cana. We also explored a few eco beaches along DR’s south-eastern shore. Each place we visited helped forge a connection with one more wonderful Caribbean destination.

In fact, I’ve loved every place I’ve explored in the Caribbean (Martinque, Bahamas, Puerto Rico,  Dominican Republic, various private islands, and Bermuda – which is technically considered “Altantic” although many consider it to be “Northern Caribbean.”) Of them all, though, Puerto Rico has the strongest hold on my heart. Familiarity breeds love.

It’s not just the beauty of the Caribbean islands that fascinates me—it’s the people. Whether in a resort, or wandering in the towns and villages, the people of the Caribbean are the nicest you’d ever want to meet. Equally beneficial, the islands have given me a source of endless inspiration.

Logic vs. Heart

The human mind is amazing. When I think of all the journeys I’ve gone on based on my mind interpreting another person’s works, it is astounding. That being said, it’s not like our minds are without fault and even worse, they are susceptible to illness or even delusions. Being able to control our minds is a feat within itself—and I’m not necessarily referring to someone going crazy, I’m simply talking about the everyday self-doubt and illogical thoughts we all seem to have.

I was speaking with a friend earlier this week who was down about his job performance. This was after a conversation with his boss’ boss which confirmed he was doing well in the job. And yet my friend proceeded to read into other conversations and/or comments. I pushed him on why he was doing this and whether he would or could do anything differently assuming he was providing sub-par performance. He didn’t know the answer to my first question and in regards to the second question, he admitted he was doing all he could so if that wasn’t enough then he really couldn’t make changes.

My friend isn’t alone. I’ve done this, I’ve known others who do this. We are human and by default that statement seems to mean we are flawed. But as to why we do this to ourselves, I’ve never been able to answer that question. I guess a layman’s way of answering that question is that we think with our hearts at times and not with our minds. I happen to work in an industry that safe guards for this. I work in finance, a traditionally emotion filled subject, especially when it comes to our own money. This is why I have the job I have—emotions can make decision very complex.

So what do we do? Well, we don’t have the luxury of having someone make every single little decision for us (if you want to call that a luxury) so at times I think it is important to take a step back and digest the situation before tearing it to shreds. And if logic says we are wrong, than it may just be a matter of pushing through it until we reach the other side.

New Website! by Mandy Rosko

Sooooo, I’ve been offered some help on my website and I’ve decided to take it. Of course I felt guilty over it because it’s help from someone I know is super busy, and my website was a complete tangled mess for the longest time. But she’s also so insanely talented that I’ve seen what it looks like now that it’s up and I can’t believe how professional it is 0.o

So far everything is there. I just have to get my preorders in line and contact the woman in charge and let her know what’s up there, but she’s put all the important stuff on it, and made it look good.

It kind of makes me ashamed of how bad it looked before, considering how nice it is now. It makes me want to sit up a little straighter and try to act much more professional and prepared for everything

“It’s going to be all right, my skaoi,” Second said, kneeling in front of me with his brother following suit. Reaching toward my face, he cupped my cheek in his hand. Cool relief flooded me.

The heat at my core chilled, making me shiver. Second’s nostrils flared. If he could smell me, like some kind of—hold on.

“I can understand you now,” I whispered. “I couldn’t yesterday. What is going on?”

Forgetting all about their hotness and the foreign sensations pulsing through me, I stood, edging past them to have the door at my back. I needed to get out of here, to run away. If I could get some distance between me, and these pillars of handsomeness with their amazing smell, I could figure out what was going on.

Second’s gaze cut to the door. He knew what I was thinking.

So I bolted.

Outside, snow had fallen during the night, but it didn’t slow me down. I had long legs, good endurance, and when I found my stride, I was fast.

With my arms pumping, I cut through the snow like it wasn’t there. The cold air cleared my head, filled my lungs, and I wanted to shout out with joy. The trees blurred by me, and when the sound of broken limbs and snow reached me, I put on a burst of speed.

They were chasing me, and I liked it. It was right—what we were supposed to do. Part of the dance. But I was too fast for them. They’d never catch me. I didn’t have the bulk they did, they’d never be able to match my—

Arms gripped me, lifting me off my feet and spinning me around. I imagined what I looked like, feet peddling, arms windmilling. My elbow connected with a hard chest. “Oomph.” 

Whoever held me spun me around. “First,” I whispered.

“Grim,” he replied, and I frowned.

“What’s grim?” I glanced around. The snow was still falling, but I wouldn’t call the landscape grim.

First blushed and bit his lip. With his arms around me, I could truly get the sense of his height. At nearly six feet myself, I wasn’t used to tipping my head back to see someone’s face. He cleared his throat. “No. It’s my name. Grim.”

“Betha,” I answered, beginning to feel awkward. His arms were tight around my back. His hard chest pressed against my front. My chest heaved as I panted, trying to catch my breath with each inhalation. The sensation flooded my senses; I needed more of it.

“Betha.” My name came out on a breath. Movement behind me had him narrowing his eyes and growling. “Fenris. You won’t take her.”

Second moved into my line of sight, away from a copse of trees. He studied Grim and me intently.

Silently, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with his twin. “She is ours now. There is no breaking the bond.”

“Hold up.” I gripped each of their shoulders, attempting to separate them so I could step forward and address the other brother. The one who’d been dragged out of the house yesterday and had regarded me with dislike and confusion. Having been on the receiving end of looks like that most of my life, I could safely say what was burning in his eyes now was as far away from dislike as one could get. “Grim.”

His body tensed, but he didn’t move. “Please stay behind Raynor and me, Betha.” Was it just me or did his mouth linger over my name. “We’ll keep you safe.”

“I’m not going to hurt her, idiots. She is my skaoi as well as yours,” Fenris snapped.

“What is a skaoi?” I asked.

They ignored me. “You denied her. Said you’d send her back. I won’t let you,” Second— no—Raynor answered.

Send me back? To Boston and my job and the story I’d written and Jeb the douchebag editor. The plan had a lot less draw than it did when I was hurtling toward Earth, expecting to be a Betha pancake.

“I couldn’t send her back. Not now. But she can’t run from us, not here. It’s too dangerous,” the older brother snapped. His eyes were blue, but different than the blue-eyed twins and mother, and when they caught mine, they warmed. When I stepped toward him without thought, both Grim and Raynor stopped me.

Anxiety filled me. I had to go to him, needed to go to him. The twins had to let me past. Though Fenris remained still, body held in a position of feigned calmness, he was strung tight and ready to snap.

“Let me,” I whispered, pushing them apart with a gentle nudge.

“Not too close,” came Raynor’s gravelly reply. He threw one arm up, blocking me from going further.

“Raynor.” Fenris growled. “Don’t touch her.” His blue eyes darkened as his skin paled, a bluish-white cast creeping from his neck to his jaw and along his cheekbones. Steam poured off of him where it covered his naturally pink skin.

“Move.” I touched Raynor’s arm, wrapping my fingers around his wrist. Whatever I felt for Fenris, I felt for Raynor and Grim, and the threat in Fenris’s voice charged something inside me. I managed to get around the twins, enough they still shielded me, but I could get between the men if I needed to.

Growling low and deep in his throat, Fenris glided forward, eyes narrowed. His entire body began to change. Gone were the furs and leathers, the high cheekbones and slightly slanted eyes, and what remained in his place was a giant of a man, covered head-to-toe in ice. Each step came with a snap.

Holy crap.

The arm beneath my hand cooled, an equally low growl vibrating from Raynor and echoed by Grim. As I stared, their bodies mirrored Fenris’s: blue-white encased in ice.

Raynor’s knees bent, ready to lunge at Fenris. I dashed between them. “No!” Palms forward, I whipped my gaze from the twins to their older brother. “Stop,” I added, trying to impress upon them I was one-who-shall-be-obeyed.

How to Write A Fiction Novel, Part 2

You have started your fiction novel, and you have found you’re one of two kinds of writer. You’re either a “pantser” (one who writes from the seat of your pants) or a plotter (one who figures it all out).

I started out a pantser but because my novels are multi-layered, I need to keep timelines, and lists of character characteristics, and locale descriptions including histories, and dangers.  I used to do this all in my head but as each book was written I realized, I needed to do this better.

While I still dream my novel and write them as fast as I can, I also now organize. My early training in playwriting came in handy here. I write scenes. I’m using Padlet to organize. I also took a course on developing the non-fiction book about thinking of the book as a whole and then breaking it down in parts which is done by writing out the chapters each with a descriptive title of what’s in that chapter. It’s a way of identifying scenes.

 

In my book, The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais, there are different locales, so I wrote down the scenes and then organized them under the different locales. I used Padlet for this purpose.

Scrivener can be used also for this.

In playwriting, you have a scene where someone has a problem. Then each scene forward you are trying to solve the problems but things get in the way. The closer you get to the solution, the more obstacles are in your main character’s path. Journey story lines like The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais demonstrate this.

In the book, Laura Cordelais who lives and works in New York is informed that her mother has died and the funeral is the next day in New Orleans. Then she finds out her fiancé has dumped her a week before their wedding. Leaving work, she is robbed and now doesn’t have the money to get to the funeral in time. She only has some money hidden in her shoe, enough to get to her apartment. In a desperate act when her taxi stops in traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge, she gets out and climbs over the rail thinking to end it all. Then she changes her mind but slips and falls.

Vampire David Hilliard has just asked God to take mercy on a vampire. David wishes for love.  David’s request is answered in the form of the tormented and dying Laura. By saving her, he falls in love and dooms them both to a dark underworld of voodoo and sorcery from which nothing can escape.

This is how I did it. Move forward in your book. Keep writing fast. For now put descriptive titles on those chapters. Move scene by scene. Remember every action has a reaction. Most of all have fun with the process.

Twitter Pitch Parties—The Updated Edition by Stacy Hoff

A few months ago I posted an article about Twitter pitch parties: http://bit.ly/2prHy8Z. That post got a ton of hits! Given its popularity, and the fact that this December brings two major pitch parties, I decided to give an update.

For those who missed my original post, a Twitter “pitch party” is when writers use a particular hashtag on a date when literary agents and publishing house editors are checking the feed. It’s an effective way for publishing professionals to scan the “Twitterverse” for potential manuscript acquisitions. Authors have to tweet a one-sentence summation of their story, hopefully one that captures the main character’s voice, objective, and conflict.

Some reminders about Twitter pitch parties:

1. Using the Twitter party’s hashtag is mandatory (or your tweet won’t show up in the party’s feed). Examples of Twitter party hashtags are: #PitMad, #SFFPit, #PitDark, and #DVpit. These party hashtags are typically included at the end of a tweet-pitch, although it can be included at the very beginning of the tweet.

2. it is very helpful to include the hashtag age-range for the book, such as: children (#C), children picture book (#CP), middle grade (#MG), young adult (#YA), adult (#A), and “new adult” (#NA) which is applicable for protagonists who are either college-age or right out of college.

3. the genre hashtag is also important to include in your tweet. Some popular genre hashtags are: romance (#R), SciFi (#SF) SciFi/fantasy (#SFF), fantasy (#F), horror (#H), suspense (#S), thriller (#T).

(That said, I strongly recommend you throughly research any agent or editor who “likes” your pitch before submitting. Caveat emptor!) The book I pitched for those two events is different from what I usually publish, so the opportunity to pitch to a new pool of people was truly appreciated.

The Final Stretch

We are here folks—dipping our foot into the final stretch of the 2017 year. I can barely believe how fast there year has flown and yet I feel like I say that every year. And as I reflect on this year to see what it really has meant, only one word comes to mind—change. I say this as I sit at my desk and type with a coat on my lap and a blanket around my shoulders. I am an absolutely wimp when it comes to the winter weather, especially after living in the desert for over a decade. Phoenix got cold for maybe a week in the winter and the cold there was nothing like the cold I’m feeling back on the east coast. And I’m ashamed to say where I’m located it is probably considered pretty mild.

But I digress… back to 2017. It’s funny that as I get older it seems more important for days, months and years to have meaning. I dip back into time more, perhaps because it seems that the “book” of memories is growing while the length of the future seems more finite. I’m still considered somewhat young so it is not to say I’m thinking the end is near, but as a kid or a teenager we hardly ever think of life as being something that really will end soon. That being said, I probably don’t have many kids reading this blog post today so for all others, I’m going to ask a big question. What do you want 2018 to look like? 2017 is coming to an end shortly. Accomplishments have been made, losses have been felt. 2018 is a new start. And I’m not talking about coming up with some resolution that you might never keep. What will you be about? What changes do you want to make or what do you want to remember and value going forward? This doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t start till 2018, but it does give you a chance to think of what you value most as we near the new year.

It’s that time of year again where a flu shot is almost mandatory, and if not, then you’re probably a sucker like me upset with yourself because you caught it, and now you’re struggling through it between your deadlines and writing goals.

Not gonna lie, I completely forgot today was Tuesday and that this post was due. Sorry it’s late :S

 

So, this is going to be a short one as I ask a question. When you’re under the weather, do you power through it? Or put on some soup, stay in bed, and catch up on your reading and sleep?

 

I’m looking over at my bed and it looks pretty good right about now, and my attention span is that of a squirrel. Not to mention the dog is upset with me for not spending as much time with him in the last couple of days.

 

But, the good news so far is that the job at the bookstore is going well, and the books for the author I’m supporting came in, and I’ll be trying to sell more copies of the book whenever I go in for a shift
