Ohhhh, You’re on My List All Right… By Ripley Proserpina
This is going to be a list post… but when writing the title of the post, I started thinking about “all right” vs. “alright.” I do this. I come up with a theme, and then get sidetracked by grammar. It happened last when when I needed to make the 80s band, Wham!, show possession. So as this week’s aside, it’s “all right,” not “alright.” But I wish “alright” was a thing. I have no problem with the word, but I also love “irregardless,” so I may not be the best grammar judge.
IRREGARDLESS….
2017 was the year of books for me—both in terms of publishing and reading. But I read more books than I published, and I love talking about books I’ve read, so in no particular order except up and down, here are some of my favorite books I read in 2017, released in 2017.
Playing for Keeps by Autumn Reed.
Autumn Reed is a new adult, contemporary author, and this reverse harem romance, solidified her place in my happy-to-read pile. This is the second book in her series. The first book, Raising the Stakes, started with me bemoaning the tired state of my closet as I compared its contents to her main character’s, and ended with me gasping and clutching my pearls, “NO! They DIDN’T!”
Emma, the heroine, meets three guys in a club in Vegas. They approached her with this line, “You look really intelligent.” (Because that’s what guys look for in a club, girls they can talk to…) Still, Emma gives them a chance. Turns out, they’re all buddies, and in the grand tradition of Vegas— (I won’t spoil it).
The first book could have stood alone. It wrapped up, and I was left with a happy glow for days. The second book, however, that’s where Autumn shines. I love books that take a happy ending, and go a step farther. What happens after the curtain closes? Real life. And real life in a reverse harem romance is seldom neat and tidy. For all that, though, Autumn knows how to build a story up, taking you along for a ride that speeds by. You reach the destination without realizing how much time has passed.
Lost Hope, Tradition Be Damned by Rebecca Royce
Rebecca Royce is a master of dystopian romance. I read the first book in the Lost Hope series, Tradition Be Damned, in hours. Not because it wasn’t long, but because I inhaled it. Her story starts after the world has ended. For the people in this universe, there is no last minute reprieve from the demons that have flooded from the underworld and taken over. Nope. It’s all over. Humans have lost, and now it’s just a matter of time until they’re all gone.
Or is it?
I love that Rebecca Royce took the end of the world past the end. This story is a romance, and I’ve rarely met a female lead I’ve liked as much as I like Anne. She has magic in her blood, and when she truly realizes her power, it changes everything. My favorite part about this character is she’s strong, but filled with self-doubt. She’s been raised to believe there’s no hope for the world, so when she finds her magic, and falls in love (did I mention this is another reverse harem?) Anne has to redefine everything.
Treasures of the Abyss by Tiffany Roberts
I don’t usually judge a book by its cover, but when I saw this one, I had to read it. I mean, the dude was coming out of the ocean, and he had tentacles.
Maybe you thinking this is some weird, creature-feature? Nope. It’s a completely unique, beautifully written, see-beneath-the-surface (see what I did there? The surface? Of the ocean AND the skin? B minus in Interpretation of Literature, my butt) romance.
I adored the world in which this book was set. It came alive. From the rocky shores to the underwater city, it lived and breathed. I read this one in hours, and I may have cried a little. But probably not, because my heart is stone. Stone, I tell you!
I’m so glad I read this book, I feel like a better person for having done so.
Stolen by the Alien by Amanda Milo
Amanda’s since changed the cover of her book, but here’s another one that sucked me in with the way it stood out from the alien romance crowd. Initially, her cover was a lovely pen and ink portrait that resembled a comic book panel. It’s beautiful now as well, but it was this comic-look that caught my eye.
Amanda writes science fiction romance, and her worlds are intricate and complicated. She weaves together gladiators, royalty, space pirates, slavery, and politics in this book, but at the same time, keeps the budding romance at the forefront. This book knocked my socks off—I’d never read anything like it, and with each subsequent book in this series (Amanda’s written three so far) I find myself bowing at the alter of Amanda’s originality.
Denial by RM Walker
There are few authors who are as well-versed in history, magic, and mystery as RM Walker. She is a modern-day Daphne Dumaurier. Her characters are flawed, beautiful, and struggling. Lily, the heroine from RM’s first book, continues her story in Denial.
What I loved about this book is how Lily reacts to learning she has magic. RM’s world is full of English countryside fairies and folktales. I love to put myself in the character’s shoes, and if I was Lily? I’d be all over the magic. I’d be cursing people, and hexing them until my little black heart swelled, but not Lily. She wants no part of it.
And that’s where RM gets you. Her characters never do what you expect, and you end up being so glad they didn’t. Her third book is due to release soon, and I can barely stand the anticipation.
Magpies and Moonshine by Heather R. Blair
Freaking Minnesota. I’ve been lucky to get to talk to each one of these authors, and ask them questions about their books, but this last one in Heather’s Toil and Trouble series was everything I didn’t know I wanted in a book.
Like—more Minnesota.
I have crazy respect for people who live in frozen fjords, so I was doubly (get it? Double double, Toil and Troub…nevermind) excited about a book that used the setting, its history, native people, immigrant people, and the mythology associated with both, to build a world.
Each sister in Heather’s series has gotten a book, and I’ll admit I was really really excited for Carly’s.
Mostly because of Styx.
Styx.
Le Sigh.
I don’t want to give anything about Styx away, but he’s a god, and if Heather wrote an entire series that was Styx’s backstory, I’d preorder it tomorrow. (Hint hint, Heather). Magpies in Moonshine is heavy on the adventure, and the romance. A perfect combination if you ask me.
So there it is. My list of 2017. Each of these books sort of defined the beginning, middle, and end of the year, which I think, is the best way to judge a year.
Or at least, it’s a lot less depressing.
Happy 2018, everyone.

How to Write A Fiction Novel, Part 6 – Real Dialogue
I studied playwriting, and I recommend it to every author. Writing a play frees the author from trying to find a way to attribute who say what, because it’s automatically part of a play’s structure. It allows the author to convey a lot in speech. In fiction, the use of “he said, she said,” is recommended sparingly. It’s more common to show speech and then action by that same character.
One way to study dialogue is to sit in a place where people are milling about and talking. Listen. Sit in bus terminals. If you’re traveling, listen in airports. Two of my favorites are to listen to people talking in supermarkets or small restaurants.
In my book Vampire Princess of New York, there is a lot of action, thinking, and gestures between dialogue.
Here is a sample.
*
For the second night in a row, Noblesse slept in the arms of Donovan Dupre.
Inside her dream, she screamed.
“Noble, wake up. Noble, you’re having a nightmare again.” He gently shook her.
Noblesse blinked and stared at him, confused for several moments. “Donovan,” she said half-in surprise, then hugged him for all she was worth.
“What happened, Sha? Last night you wouldn’t tell me, but tonight, please, you must.”
Biting her lower lip, she huffed. It was a habit she had tried to stop, because it revealed her feelings too well. Donovan, with that slight Cajun accent rolling off his tongue, made her feel safe and the floodgates opened.
“It’s always the same. I see and hear everything so loud, every word and sound as I stood with them and screamed. It was July 17, 1789 all over again. I was with the patriots waiting outside the Bastille. They refused to release their prisoners, and we stormed the prison with all we had. Gun and cannon fire struck us. Hundreds of tiny stars of light hit me and burned. I fell.
“At that very moment, Max walked through the mob to carry me away. He said he walked a distance to find a house both empty and far enough not to be fired upon. My heart could barely beat. I remember him saying, ‘I don’t want to hurt you. I want to give you another chance, my brave one, my noble one.’ The sky must have turned black. I couldn’t breathe. His fangs sank into my neck, but death was already there to claim me. I did not understand him but asked God for forgiveness. I died.”
Donovan frowned. “I remember you telling me this story before. Why is it suddenly so terrifying?”
“I saw something I’ve never seen before. When Max was carrying me, when life was swimming around me, we passed a doorway where a man concealed himself in a black cape.”
“Who was it?”
“I don’t know. His face was covered. I don’t remember seeing him there. Could this be a restored memory?”
“Sha, I don’t know.” He breathed into her ear.
Noble hugged him but couldn’t stop trembling.
“It’s okay.” He held her tightly against him and rubbed her back. His calm melted into her, and the fear subsided.
*
Here’s the blurb for the book.
Noblesse is the daughter of the Vampire King of New York Maximillion Vander Meer. In the over two hundred years, she’s been a vampire, Noblesse has never found a true love or discovered what happened to her mother who disappeared just prior to the French Revolution.
Noblesse has to choose between two men. Both profess their love. Both are keeping a secret from her. One wants to destroy her, and one wants to love her forever. But which one?
*
It’s always good to test your dialogue by reading it aloud to make sure it sounds natural.

New Year, No Worries
Like many this week, I’m in the midst of family fun and madness. A few more days and we cross into a new year. As such, this time of year always makes me a bit more pensive than usual. What do I want 2018 to be like? And just how much choice will I have in the matter?
I realize most things don’t turn out how you plan them but I do find it necessary to set some sort of goals for accomplishments from year to year. Perhaps it’s our human need to keep up with the pack or to keep improving over time. I don’t believe each one of us feels this way but I do believe that as a species we strive to learn and grow–otherwise, I highly doubt we would have reached this far in our evolution.
But I digress… back to 2018. The truth is that this year is probably the first year where I haven’t a clue as what to strive for. It isn’t that I don’t want to improve. It’s more like I feel content. Sure there are things I still want to learn and do but I no longer feel incomplete without them. Maybe it is an age thing or maybe it is where I am at this time in life, but it doesn’t bother me either way and that’s a bit of a nice feeling for once.
Happy writing this week and may you all have a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas Paranormal-Scope
[image error]
To those that celebrate it, we wish you a Merry Christmas. To all, may the holidays be a joyful and safe time for you.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
The week for:
Aries:
Elves have taken up jogging to keep up with their busy schedule. Re-evaluate your fitness routine with your doctor after the holidays.
Taurus:
Gnomes are baking goodies. There are never enough for all the company. Expect an unexpected visitor.
Gemini:
Flying reindeer are preparing for a vacation. Consider planning a trip.
Cancer:
Pixies are spreading cheer with faery dust. You spread cheer every time you smile. Be aware of that.
Leo:
Faeries are singing as snow falls. Give yourself some time to relax and enjoy a favorite hobby.
Virgo:
Vampires are celebrating quietly with friends and family. Plan a get-together with those closest to you.
Libra:
Mermaids love the lights reflected on the water. Take in some holiday sites just for fun.
Scorpio:
Angels watch you sleep. Good things are coming your way.
Sagittarius:
Shapeshifters love the variety of holidays and seasons. Plan a special celebration with friends.
Capricorn:
Werewolves like to cuddle and play games this time of year. Enjoy a game or two. You might find someone special to cuddle.
Aquarius:
A gnome a day keeps the doctor away. Gnomes know how to party and still eat healthy. Think of that and don’t let celebrating compromise your health.
Pisces:
Dragons make their cave festive and cozy. Enjoy the company of others but build in some chilling time for yourself.

Last Christmas I Gave You My Heart…By Ripley Proserpina
I didn’t really give you my heart last Christmas… but Wham!’s (an aside, this is the correct punctuation. Their proper name is Wham!…therefore, yes, it’s Wham!’s…) ANYHOO! Wham! sings my favorite Christmas song, so I wanted to use the title here.
Which brings me to the actual post… I wanted to share something with you that hasn’t been seen by anyone yet. In November, I released my vampire reverse harem, Briar. And in honor of Christmas, I wanted to share with you the very first chapter in the second book, Shadow of Thorns. Merry Christmas everyone! In the words of my favorite superhero, Bob Newby, “I hope it doesn’t suck.”
A cool breeze raised the fine hairs over Briar’s skin. The sky was a cloudless blue, but the sun didn’t burn. In fact, it didn’t touch her skin from where she was held, caught up tight in strong arms.
“What’s your favorite part of our story?” the voice came like a whisper and she shivered. “Don’t answer,” it went on. “Let me tell you mine. I saw you, far across the room in your huge hat and white gloves and thought, what a strange girl. I was distracted by the lecture, but my gaze kept going to you. On the edge of your seat, peeling the gloves from your delicate hands.” There was a chuckle and the voice breezed into her ear.“Imagine if I’d smelled you then! It would have been a blood bath.”
A sigh ruffled her hair, blowing it across her face and tickling her nose, but she couldn’t muster the energy to lift her arm and brush it away. The world was silent for a while.
“A world without you, Briar.” The hand petting her hair, cheek, and neck paused. “I can’t stand to think about it.” Dark eyes met hers and she shut her eyes. “No. Briar. No. Open your eyes and look at me while I tell you this.”
If only she could shut her ears the way she could shut her eyes.
“Open your eyes, Briar.” The voice cajoled her, and like everything in this world, she was at the mercy of its maker. Slowly, despite her effort to keep them closed, they opened, and she met Asher’s amused grin. “There you are, sweet girl.” His thin nostrils flared as he breathed her in. “Each day your scent becomes more delicious. I can hardly wait for the night to meet you here.”
She wanted to speak, but Asher didn’t always like what she had to say, so he kept her silent. Now, however, he lifted one dark, perfectly formed eyebrow and her throat opened up. “I hate you.”
He frowned, and shook his head. “You’re ruining a beautiful moment.”
“I hate you,” she said again, her voice rising about the breeze that suddenly seemed to have picked up. Asher’s dark hair, usually straight as a pin, blew around his head, and his eyes went from brown to black.
“It doesn’t matter what you think of me, Briar. It only matters that I think of you, remember? It’s my thoughts that bring us here as soon as your eyes close and you drift into sleep. Even now, do you know where you are?” Asher leaned forward and his fangs, sharp and white, cut into his lower lip, distorting his voice. “You’re tucked in tight. Marcus is reading Kant while you dream away. He has no idea you’re with me, held in my arms, feeding my hunger. Sylvain and Valen are downstairs. They’re playing chess and Sylvain is losing because he isn’t thinking about the moves he makes. And Hudson? Hudson couldn’t even be bothered to come home tonight. He’s still in his lab, eyes glued to a computer. You aren’t a passing thought in their minds.”
The breeze stopped, the rush of air was gone and the world was silent. The sky turned black and Asher pushed her away from his chest to flop onto the settee where he’d been holding her. “The moment has passed, Briar, but there will be more. Remember that. No. Actually. Don’t.”
Briar couldn’t wipe away the tears escaping her eyes. This was the worst part—the knowing. In a moment, she’d forget everything about this place. The only thing she’d keep was a feeling of dread that increased as the day grew to a close. But right now, she knew exactly what happened when she fell asleep every night.
She knew Asher was waiting for her here, in this in-between place, to hurt her, and she knew she was helpless to stop him.

How to Write A Fiction Novel, Part 5 – Climaxes and How They Happen!
The climax of a fiction novel is where all the troubles, all the efforts come to a single point [image error]of confrontation. The hero, heroine, or both working together must make a life changing decision.
In my book Vampire King of New York, it was a grand battle, and I had to place and move a lot of characters. For me, both hero and heroine had decisions to make and independent of each other. Here’s what I did.
To write the climax of any fiction novel:
1. Pull no stops. Nothing is out of the question as long as it makes sense to the book and the genre.
2. Challenge your heroine, hero, or both to the breaking point. They have everything to lose. They were not in their comfort zone. The future was unknown and could go any way imaginable.
3. Whether you’ve saving a life, a city, or confronting something threatening to the mind, body, heart, and/or soul, your character gets it together with at least some sort of plan.
4. Author: Be completely original. Scare yourself. Don’t be afraid to cry. Don’t be afraid to risk everything.
5. The climax is the do or die moment. It is the most tense scene in the book. Every action and reaction builds to that moment. Get there. Know that whatever the character planned to do, everything goes wrong. It’s a leap of faith. Jump.
*
Here’s the blurb for the book.
Max Vander Meer, is a modern day Viking, CEO of VMeer Industries, and a Vampire. He makes a plea to the Goddess Freya to find the only woman who can heal his heart, the woman haunting his dreams. But, the Goddess strikes a bargain with him. To find this special woman, Max must return to the city he helped build–New York, which is threatened by an ancient terror. When he meets Evelyn, he is astounded. Could she be the one who inhabits his dreams? But Evelyn is haunted by loss and betrayal. How can Max win her love when she doesn’t trust him as a man, and she doesn’t want to be a vampire? If Max returns to Iceland without her, he will be encased in ice . . . forever!
*
As an author, writing the climax is such a rush. It’s the moment every moment in the book has been building toward. Read what I said above and go for it.
Vampire King of New York is a great example of a book that keep moving and is unpredictable but fun. It’s currently available in Kindle and Amazon Print. https://www.amazon.com/Vampire-King-Susan-Hanniford-Crowley-ebook/dp/B00D70NC6O
It’s also available for at Barnes and Noble online in print. https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/vampire-king-of-new-york-susan-hanniford-crowley/1116839039
If you have been following along, be sure to look at the actions and reactions of your “people” as you write. Dialogue is included in reactions.
