School Break by Stacy Hoff
This week my kids have enjoyed a late-winter break from their respective schools, high school and middle school. Both of them used to get a full week off from classes. Now they just get a four-day weekend. Four days is not enough time for us to travel anywhere as a family. Thankfully, four days is enough time for them to catch up on their homework.
While my kids are studying, I’m busy at work, too. I’m juggling a variety of writing related activities in between making the kids sandwiches and snacks. I’m glad I took off a few days from work to be with them, and to get some writing done.
The kids and I will be back at our desks very soon. I’m going to make the best of the the little time we have left. Carpe diem!
Do you have any time off from work or school?

The Crazy World We Live In
We live in a crazy world. I know there are so many ways you can take those words. We are crazy busy, crazy growing, crazy dangerous in some ways and crazy cutting edge innovative… I can keep going in some many different directions. But what I’m really referring to today is how our world seems to blend the stuff of fiction and the stuff or real life. I pull open a newspaper (or pull it up online), turn on the radio, look a podcast—I mean you name it as far as how you want to get your updates on the world around you. You listen and you have to wonder whether you are hearing the stuff of some eighties or nineties action thriller or whether this stuff is really going on. Not to mention how much these ongoings paralyze those around us.
I happen to work in finance and I spend quite a bit of time talking with folks about the markets. These days, that topic has people panicked more than before. I feel like I’m flashing back to conversations I had in 2008 and perhaps it’s possible that while our world has seen a lot of growth since our Great Recession, that 2008 timeframe is not as distant in our minds as we’d like to think. In hindsight and in watching movies like The Big Short, one can’t help but think about where the lines between fiction and reality blend and then wonder which one came first?
The truth is each day we live could be a basis for someone’s best seller. It’s about how you tell the story and what story you choose to tell. I’m not trying to play it down because I believe writing that story/telling that story takes talent and skill. There just seems to be an abundance of material out there these days if you are inspired enough to use it.
Happy writing this week!

Preparing Swag for Romancing The Capitol by Mandy Rosko
So in my never ending question to figure out how to go shopping for some awesome gear and write it off as a business expense, I’ve been watching a few Youtube videos lately where ladies who own their own Etsy shops have been making stickers.
These can either be for planners, or just because stickers. Usually they are specially designed, or designed by the shop owners.
And I realized that if I could print off my own stickers, and get a cutter for them, then that’s some pretty awesome swag right there.
I’ve already started on a couple of cute little designs, but even though my drawing and painting skills are, ahem, minimal, I could also add in some simplistic things for planners and calendars that are reading related, and maybe if my ego needs enough of a boost, some stickers of my book covers.
I’ve already got the printer. I found a nice one for cheap on Kijiji, so now I’m going to see if I can’t get the rest of the materials I need without paying full price.
Because I’m incredibly cheap. Lol
A few other things on my To Buy list are a label maker I found on amazon. I get excited over the dumbest stuff, but basically it will let me print off the addresses of Patrons who get mailed rewards to them without using ink. It burns it into the paper somehow.
I need this in my life. Because it also prints off the info on stickers. Sticker labels

The Second… By Ripley Proserpina
It could all be in my head, but I have this worry about the second of anything in a series… When the first of something (movie, book, slice of pizza) is good, what happens when the second one comes around?
I’m writing about this because in two weeks I’ll be releasing the second book in my vampire reverse harem, Midnight’s Crown. I adored writing it. And even when I re-read it, as long as I’m in the right state of mind, I think to myself, “Not bad.”
**GET READY FOR A DIGRESSION!**
An author’s opinion about their writing changes on the day they read it. Nay! It changes based on the hour! What you love one moment, you can hate the next. This is why editors are so important. Their objectivity keeps the book on track and the author from deleting what might not actually be crap.
Anyway… I worry about the second of series because of this list: The Godfather Part 2, Back to the Future Part 2, Jaws 2, Terminator 2, Bridget Jones Diary 2. There’s a lot of pressure to make the second, and it can go one of two ways. An author/director can say to themselves, “I got this…” And then you end up with Back to the Future Part 2 (decidedly the absolute worst, I don’t care if they had a hover board—seeing Marty McFly’s mom end up with Biff Tanner was AWFUL).
Or you can work extra extra hard so you don’t do end up with Fredo in a canoe saying a Hail Mary (Godfather reference). I fall into the category of fingers-crossed/please, dear Editor, be especially harsh/don’t hold back/rip it apart.
Now that editing is finished, and it’s just waiting to be uploaded to Amazon, I’m waking up in the middle of the night with panic. “Did I remember to consistently call Briar by the right nickname?” There’s no logic at three am, there’s only a pencil and notepad and hastily scratched questions to be double-checked the next day.
But, with a series, you gotta release the second part. And the third. I’m trying to remember if the same is true for the third of a series, as the second. Thirds… Return of the Jedi (that was good!)… but… Godfather Part 3… Jurassic Park Part 3…
Oh boy.

How to Write A Fiction Novel, Part 13 – Great Endings
Great endings are about memorable moments and often a quotable phrase that stirs the imagination. I thought about which book to share the ending which would not give away the story of the book, and I chose The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais. It’s the stormy love story of how Vampire David Hilliard and Laura get together. It’s filled with suspense, voodoo, and passion.
Endings tie up loose ends. Sometimes they provide a peak into the next book. The key purpose is to provide a fulfilling ending to your tale, making the reader desire more. This ending is set in New Orleans.
Excerpt:
“I’d like one of those candles,” Laura whispered to David. They went inside and purchased one.
As they stepped back out the door, slam! They ran into another couple.
Laura fell to her knees and grabbed her forehead. “Ow.” She looked up and met the dark eyes of the other woman, who had dropped a wine red rose on the ground. Laura instinctively picked it up.
It was Camille, her brown curls disheveled. For an instant, they stared at each other.
“Are you all right?” Richard helped his wife to her feet. Camille brushed herself off. Laura held out the rose to return it. The two couples looked at each other as if to say something.
Then Camille and Richard turned from the vampires and walked away. They continued down the street until they were gone, and Laura twirled the rose in her fingers.
David asked, “How are you doing?”
“It’s only a bump.”
“I don’t mean that. She could have at least said thank you.”
Laura smiled at David. “Oh, she did.”
David took her hand and led her to a bench that overlooked the harbor. They sat in a passionate embrace and kissed.
“Ouch,” she said, dropping the rose.
David took her hand and licked the blood from her finger seductively. Laura giggled.
“Come, my darling,” he said in his best Bela Lugosi voice, “Let’s dance like children of the night.” He pulled her to her feet, and in one motion twirled her into his arms. She laughed. They waltzed into the moonlight. Left behind on the park bench was a single deep red rose. Clouds gathered, and a sweet, steamy sweat drizzled over the city.
*
What I love about this ending, is it brings together characters that share a special, albeit frightening moment in the novel.
If you’re dying to read The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais, which is Book 2 in the Vampires in Manhattan series, it’s available in Kindle and Print and Barnes and Noble Print.

Presidents’ Day Weekend by Stacy Hoff
Monday, February 19th, is Presidents’ Day. For me, that means a three-day weekend. I will spend my time being inspired by the above painting of George Washington. I love that he’s looking over a manuscript because I’m going to scrutinize a document, too. I’ll be analyzing my WIP (work-in-progress).
Three days off is not a lot of time to get work done. I’ve got a busy family with active kids. I’ll have to get up real early and go to bed very late. Thankfully, I’m used to a hectic schedule—and sleep deprivation.
What will you be doing this Presidents’ Day?

Who Was Valentine?
Valentine’s Day… the day of love or at least that is what we tend to think of when we think of this day. Yet who was Valentine and was his story so romantic that it led to a day we celebrate each year as we look to those we love?
Ironically, according to historical accounts (www.history.com) Saint Valentine was a holy priest in Rome who was executed on February 14th. Why? Well apparently, Rome was under the rule of Claudius the Cruel who banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. It is said that Roman men were unwilling to join the army due to their attachment to their wives and families. This ban was an attempt to remedy this issue. And yet, Valentine defied the Emperor Claudius II and continued to perform marriages in secret. As you can now guess, Claudius found out and had Valentine beheaded.
There are other accounts in research that talk about love letters exchanged with a jailer’s daughter and even possibilities of other saints or martyrs named Valentine but I am not sure how much truth they hold. In 496 AD, Pope Galasius declared February 14th to be celebrated as St. Valentine’s Day and this is the day we now know as a day to exchange messages of love, gifts, flowers, candies and the like.
I’ll be honest in that I have never really celebrated Valentine’s Day—at least not in the conventional way of a fancy dinner out with my husband. This is my choice simply because I find restaurants overly crowded and most times, the quality of food and service suffers due to this. That being said, I do believe it is important to celebrate those we love and those close to us, whether we do that on Valentine’s Day or not. It can’t hurt to have it as a reminder, especially as we get absorbed by all the directions life pulls us in.
Take care and Happy Valentine’s Day to you all.

That’s Science, Baby! Ripley Proserpina
Last week, I posted about a shared sci-fi collection I had coming out February 15th with eight other incredible authors. This week, the authors in my group agreed to answer questions about why they write sci-fi romance and their experience writing a shared world.
What draws you to write sci-fi romance?
Tiffany Roberts
That there are no limits! Anything is possible.
Ripley
Science! I love the idea of a world that isn’t constrained by the same rules that I take for granted. What if there was a place without gravity? What if there was a planet where the heroine could breathe underwater? Sci-fi gets my brain working in a different way, and poses unique challenges that I don’t always encounter when writing paranormal romance or contemporary romance.
Isabel Wroth
In sci-fi the only boundaries are the limits of your imagination. You can go anywhere in the vastness of the universe so long as you have a strong ship, and a sexy alien male to guide her. Because everyone knows, aliens do it better.
Regine Abel
I love that I’m not bound by the limits and restrictions of the real world, not just on from the fantasy/magical standpoint but especially from a cultural point of view. I can create completely new social structures, moral and cultural systems to highlight or support some aspects of the message I try to convey through my stories. It’s cool to be able to have people fall in love with characters that you would otherwise consider as monsters. Traditional beauty is no longer a factor; only the person beneath matters.
Amanda Milo
Two words: No Constraints. As long as you can provide a WHY – it doesn’t have to be real, it just has to be believable within the story – you can do anything, and I love that. I also like to read stories that are grounded in (at least a little) reality, and I prefer to write the same. Sci Fi is the perfect fit.
Marina Simcoe
Normally, I write contemporary paranormal romance. Enduring, the book I wrote for Valos of Sonhadra series, was my first sci-fi romance. What drew me to the project was the amazing group of authors I got to work with. They are not just talented writers, they are also fun, kind, supportive people. And I will be forever grateful for being invited to participate in Valos of Sonhadra.
Also, SFR is a fun genre that I really wanted to try. I enjoyed writing Enduring so much, Writing SFR is a chance to create a whole world from scratch with little to no limits. The freedom is amazing! I had to stop myself from doing more world-building to stay within the scope of one book.
Nancey Cummings
I’ve always loved sci-fi. I remember Star Trek (original flavor) came on after Saturday morning cartoons and I was hooked. The bright colors sucked me in (I was a kid, after all).
What excited you about sharing a SF world?
Tiffany Roberts
The authors! Well, also the idea of writing about a ‘golem’, but getting to know these ladies made this experience so fun and it was an honor to work with them.
Ripley
Shared brains! I was excited to write a world that wouldn’t only be mine, but come from the amazing creative brains of other authors.
Isabel Wroth
The ladies I was invited to join coincidentally are all on my list of “omg I love that author!!” So it was exciting to get to know them and learn from them as they revealed their writing process and their secrets!! (Ominous duh duh duhhhhhn)
Regine Abel
It was a brand new experience and I love a challenge. Getting to work with authors I’ve been a fan of for a long time was only a huge added bonus. It didn’t hurt that the theme itself had me pretty excited. But the best part has been reading the different books, seeing how each author has expanded the universe with fresh ideas that made me go “Damn! I wish I’d taught of that!” And from this embryo of a concept, to see the world of Sonhadra really come together. It was great mutually leveraging elements of our stories or even having some of our characters meet or interact with each other.
Amanda Milo
This is like getting to play with your friends – but instead of going to their house, you get in their head. It’s neat to see how others think and work, and writing is a solitary venture, but when done this way, you don’t have to do it alone. With the right people, it can be beautiful.
Marina Simcoe
I was one of the last to join the group. At that point most of the shared world had been completed. I got to see what the other authors had already accomplished, and got excited to do my part. I loved that aside from a few key elements, each author got enough room for imagination to build their own part of the planet within the shared world.
Nancey Cummings
I like group projects. I know, I know. Everyone hated group projects at school except me. I was that kind of dork. I guess I just like working with other people. Writing is a very solitary thing. When you share a world, it’s collaborative storytelling and one of those rare instances when you can create with other people. You set up the outline, the rules and then you go off to your corner, work a bit, and come back with an idea or outline. Even better is when you get inspired by everyone’s ideas.
I get a real kick out of seeing how other writers play with the world and how they bend the rules.
What did you find to be most challenging as you wrote a shared world?
Tiffany Roberts
Consistency. When you have nine authors working together, sharing the same world, there is going to be some miscommunication. While we wanted consistency, we also wanted everyone to have free reign and have fun with it. No one wants to be boxed in. Getting everyone on the same page for some of the details that needed to be consistent across all the books was definitely challenging, but the effort was totally worthwhile.
Ripley
Definitely consistency. There were times when I’d missed a detail and skipped a waaaaaays along the garden path before realizing my mistake.
Isabel Wroth
MAKING A DECISION!! Lol! With nine fertile and fabulous imaginations trying to walk the same vision path, the challenges were finding key points we all agreed on, and then remembering we had agreed!
Also, with such an all star crew of writers, the pressure was on to measure up and make sure my contribution was at the same level of awesomeness put forth by the Ladies of Sonhadra!
Regine Abel
Keeping track of all the changes. Dealing with the fallout of certain elements not having been previously discussed and realizing that half the group had written things a certain way which contradicted the other half. Trying to handle similar situations in our books while keeping it different from everyone else so it doesn’t get repetitive for the readers. Overcoming the language barrier was one such situation since we all needed to figure out a way for our heroine to learn to communicate with her valos.
Amanda Milo
When you write together, you have to map out your world, and nail down details. Once they’re in place – and others begin writing within that framework – you can’t just go off on every wild hair that you have.
It provides a challenge, and you have to take it exactly in this spirit. Commit, work, play.
It was worth it I had a lot of fun, and writing sister-characters reminded me of when I’ve actually written stories with my real-life sister. We haven’t been able to do that in forever, but working with Poppy Rhys brought back all the best memories.
Marina Simcoe
Surprisingly, sharing the world of Valos of Sonhadra was not the hardest part for me. The way we planned our books allowed for a lot of creative freedom for each author. The prison spaceship, where each story starts, disintegrates in the athmosfere of the planet Sonhadra. Depending where on the planet the parts and pieces of it landed, each main character found herself in a fairly unique environment.
The biggest challenge for me personally was having not one but two main male interests. It’s the first menage story I’ve ever written, and I was surprised how difficult it turned out to keep the story and the relationship between my trio of characters unbiased and equal. I have gained even more respect for writers of Reverse Harem novels. It’s a lot of work!
Nancey Cummings
The pressure! The VoS authors were wonderful to work with but I didn’t want to let anyone down. All the pressure came from my own anxiety. What if my book sucked? What if I couldn’t make the deadline? I threw out my first draft and original outline and started over like a month into the writing process.
Nancey’s Bio: I write fun, flirty and fast stories featuring sassy heroines, out-of-this-world heroes, all the mischief they can managed and plenty of steamy fun. Hopefully you want to read them too. I live in an old house with my husband and a growing collection of cats.
