Happy Spring… By Ripley Proserpina

Happy Spring!

Tuesday is, allegedly, the first day of spring. In Vermont, spring doesn’t arrive until May. But it isn’t until June that I truly believe there isn’t the possibility of snow.

Still—yay for everyone else. In celebration of spring, I want to look ahead to books I’m excited to read.

Maggie Stiefvater’s already released short story in The Raven Cycle, Opal. Anyone who is a fan of mythology, history and romance with a southern gothic twist will love The Raven Cycle.
Rainbow Rowell is releasing Marvel’s The Runaways. A classic superhero saga, with Rowell as author? I’m stoked.
Rebecca Royce’s Planet Bear. Royce is releasing a sci-fi version of Goldilocks for the Once Upon a Harem series. Given this author’s previous sci-fi romances, I can’t wait for this one!
Autumn Reed and Julia Clarke’s Polaris. This is the final book in the Stardust series. This reverse harem romantic thriller is one of the most solid reverse harem romance books out there. It will be bittersweet to see the series end.

What are you looking forward to?

Happy Spring or whatever.

St. Patrick’s Day by Stacy Hoff

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day. Although I’m not Irish, I intend to celebrate. Why? Because I could certainly use the luck o’ the Irish. I’ve got book projects I’m hoping to complete. Book sales I’m hoping to increase. Writing-related business deals I’m hoping to sign.

I know that success requires more than finding a four-leaf clover. It takes hard work. I’m doing everything I can to move myself forward. Including learning to garner patience.

After all this hard work, maybe I can spend at least part of St. Patrick’s Day relaxing with a glass of Irish whiskey. When I do, I’ll make a toast to Irish people everywhere. Sláinte!

Do you  have any plans for St. Patrick’s Day?

How to Use Change

I’ve always been a proponent of change, especially in the workplace. We live in an ever-evolving world and if we don’t change to keep up, we’ll simply get left behind. That’s the way of the world and it isn’t going to slow down simply because people can’t cope. That being said, I do believe that it is necessary for each of us to learn to cope to some degree—if for no other reason than let it be for sanity’s sake—just my opinion and I’m not a professional human emotions.

I work in the financial industry—change is the name of the game and volatility is a big part of that in 2018. Is it necessary for us to pay attention to every move up and down? No, not unless we are day traders looking to capitalize on those moves. For the most part we do and should tune it all out. But the constant change doesn’t stop there. Even our government seems like an extended version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears with the constant in and outflow of people.

How do we deal or even get used to it all? Well, for the most part the only thing we are getting used to is the change. Some change we experience is healthy, the rest… well, I’m not a professional to really say how much is too much and I imagine that can differ for each person. That being said, I do believe it is important to self-regulate. Don’t close your mind to all of it, we don’t live in bubbles. We do, however, need to live, find a purpose (even if that purpose is effecting more change) and hopefully use the change around us to inspire us make the world a better place. Happy writing this week!

Finished the 3rd Volume of Bad Boy Bear in Audio! by Mandy Rosko

It’s done. I had a little trouble uploading it onto Patreon a few days ago for some reason, but Volume 3 of Bad Boy Bear is finished recording and will soon go up onto Audible and other websites.

This is massively exciting to me because all three of these volumes means I have my first full length audio book done under my Mandy Rosko name.

I’ve got audio books listed under my other pen name for my publisher, and those were just as special when they were coming out, but this gets me excited on a massive level because my Patrons helped me to do this. It was something I paid for with Listen Up Audio, who did an excellent job, BTW, and get to share with my Patrons before anyone else gets to download it.

And I love it so much.

I have to confess, I have a major hard time listening to these. Every time I try, I get about two seconds in before I hit the pause button. There’s something massively embarrassing about listening to someone narrate my crappy words and make them sounds professional.

But I still love them

Zombies Running Day Paranormal-Scope

While the weather is precarious, special moments ahead will fill your heart with sunshine. I can’t wait.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

The week for:

Aries:

Zombies are easily distracted by butterflies and things they don’t understand. Follow the clues to unravel the best way to move forward.

Taurus:

Zombies faint at surprises. Don’t faint when a good surprise comes your way.

Gemini:

Zombies never focus on their health. They just keep ambling on. You, however, should not miss any doctor appointments.

Cancer:

One zombie is a loner. Two zombies are a confused duo. Three or more are a horde. They are running down your street. Let them pass. Don’t draw attention to yourself.

Leo:

Do you know how zombies have fun? Okay, besides being a foodie. Explore your possibilities from day tripping to new hobbies to hanging out with friends.

Virgo:

Zombies are not empty-headed. Sometimes it’s important to talk over problems with someone you trust.

Libra:

Zombies love to dance. Music really moves them. Explore your more musical side through dance or studying an instrument.

Scorpio:

One they have a target, Zombies are consumed by it. Or by consuming it. (Laughs). Be more focused in your job. Approach work with a passion.

Sagittarius:

Zombies value a good deed, but they don’t always remember them. Make someone’s day by remembering them with a sweet treat or flowers.

Capricorn:

Zombies enjoy collaborating with others. There’s nothing like a running hoard of zombie to inspire one to take up exercise.

Aquarius:

Zombies are running away from responsibility. You, however, are running toward it with equal excitement.

Pisces:

Answering the phone is not in the Zombie bag of skills. Be alive and excited when friends or family call. Zombies only grunt. You can do better.

Sleeping Beauty…By Ripley Proserpina

Last summer, I was asked to write a reverse harem version of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale. I knew two very very different versions of the story. First, I knew the Disney story. As a teenager, that version appealed to me, not so much because of the princess, but because of the poor witch who was the only one without an invitation to the biggest party of the year. RUDE.

Then, I knew the Anne Rice version, which I had found at fourteen years old, in the romance section of Barns and Noble. For those of you who haven’t read this story, it is hard to describe. There’s a lot going on, and since this is a PG site, I’ll just say my personal opinion is it’s more erotica than romance.

So when I was asked to retell this story, I knew I had to do some research. And like the Disney vs. Anne Rice versions, Sleeping Beauty was told in vastly different ways. Surprisingly, most of them were closer to Anne Rice than Disney. Most of us readers know that Grimm’s fairytales are pretty dark, but Sleeping Beauty is verrrrrrry dark.

And disturbing.

I decided if there can be such disparate versions of one tale, I can take those aspects of the story—sleep, a curse, a witch, magic, beauty—and turn them into something I’d want to read. Pushing the versions I learned from my mind, I focused on the similarities between the stories. Sleeping Beauty is a character who lives her life with a curse hanging over her head. She is someone who is kept in the dark, but who knows something is up, even if no one will tell her exactly what.

And let’s not forget the princes. One of my fairytale pet peeves are princes who fall in love with a princess because she is beautiful. In most fairytales, beauty is synonymous with kindness and goodness.

I think that’s unfair not only to the princess, but to the princes. What does it say about them that they can fall for someone just because they’re pretty?

Beauty has to look beyond the outward appearance of the Beast, but Prince Charming comes across an unconscious Snow White and decides she’s perfect. Sorry. That’s messed up.

My Sleeping Beauty is different, and hopefully falls between the Disney-ed version and the very unhappily-ever-after life she led in the traditional stories. Because you can’t have a fairytale without a happy ending, and honestly, I’m over you’re-so-beautiful-this-must-be-love.

I want more than pretty. I want to read about someone who can overcome adversity through determination and strength. And hopefully, other readers do, too.

“She shall prick her finger on a spinning wheel, and fall to sleep…”

There once was a girl who was born to be cursed. By no fault of her own, she was doomed to remind her kingdom of everything ugly. No matter how many good deeds she did or how kind she was, it was her destiny to die, and take her kingdom with her. Her mother and father wept when they saw her, and the witch who cursed her celebrated gleefully as each year passed.

Except there was hope. Her sisters, older and wiser, and with no small amount of magic of their own, countered the witch’s curse. If Kumiko could be loved, truly loved, the curse would be broken, and everyone would see what the witch had hidden.

But all her life, Kumiko had been let down—by the parents who hid her away and by an ill-fated curse.

Until they arrived.

Four princes, full of smug confidence and pride, were determined to break the princess’s curse before her twenty-first birthday.

All they had to do was fall in love.

Daylight Saving Time by Stacy Hoff

This weekend starts Daylight-Saving Time in the U.S. I’m not looking forward to it. I hate losing an hour every spring. One hour less of being able to get everything done. It’s a recipe for stress.

Oh, sure—eventually I’ll get used to the time change. In the meantime, I’ll be in the midst of a mad dash. I guess I’ll buy a new pair of sneakers. Plus, a flashlight so I can see in the dark.

Come to think of it, I’ll toss in a few rechargeable batteries. I can use it to recharge the flashlight. And possibly myself.

How do you deal with Daylight Saving Time?

Change

As a kid, you learn that the world is full of “glass half full” and “glass half empty” people. As you grow up and as an adult, you encounter and even begin to distinguish between these types of people. I, personally, have always thought of myself as a glass half full person. As I get older, I still believe this but I also believe life is a bit more complex than a simple 50/50 split.

My son is young but even young, he seems to be a pessimist. I don’t understand it and while I don’t paint the world with rainbows all the time, I do feel the need to reinforce an opposing point of view with him. Perhaps it is me being me or perhaps I worry about the world he will continue to immerse himself in and how that world could impact an already negative personality.

I read/viewed a recent Time magazine edition focused on the opioid crisis in our country. Yes it was sad, yes it was scary and yes I will continue to think about how we as a society can possibly change. I think that way because the author made me want to take the crisis more seriously. It isn’t an easy feat to change— the mind and will on their own are forces to be reckoned with let alone dealing with an outside influence.

There are so many things that shade our views— life experiences, people around us, our innate sense of who we are and even what we put into our bodies. Like I mentioned, it is complex. But as writers, we do have a gift to share with the world, a power to shape the lenses of others as they view the world. A power that can effect change.

Happy writing this week!
