How Diagnosing Weaknesses Got Hishali Band 7 in Just a Month

IELTS High Scorer's Advice Band 7 Tips January 2025

Hishali, an IELTS test taker from Sri Lanka, achieved a Band 7 in her very first attempt – in just one month! Her approach to diagnosing her weaknesses early and working on them strategically was key to her success. Here’s how you can apply her insights to your preparation.

Her Strategy1. Diagnose Weaknesses Early

Hishali began her journey by taking a diagnostic test to assess her level and identify which areas she needed to work on and focus more. As she explained, “I started with doing an exam to assess my level and also to identify which areas I need to work on and focus more.”

2. Set a Targeted Plan

Instead of randomly practicing, Hishali focused her energy on the areas that needed improvement, making her preparation much more efficient. She concentrated on understanding her weak areas, as identified during her diagnostic test, and then worked systematically to address them. For example, she targeted improving her writing coherence and timing, knowing these were critical for her success. One major issue she identified was writing very long and complex sentences, which often affected her grammar. Addressing this helped her streamline her writing and improve clarity. By having a structured plan, Hishali could allocate her practice time effectively, leading to faster improvements.

3. Daily Practice

She dedicated at least an hour every day to practice, gradually building her skills and confidence.

As she explained, “At start I did not time myself since I wanted to get familiar with types of questions and get to know about strategies I have to follow. Once I felt that I was comfortable with the questions, I started practicing under exam conditions to manage my time since it is crucial in our exam.”

4. The Results

Best IELTS test result December 2024

5. What You Can Do

With our IELTS Diagnostics Package, you can replicate Hishali’s focused approach. The package includes:

Goodbye 2024… Welcome 2025!

Happy New Year 2025!

As 2024 comes to a close, I wanted to share some exciting updates with you. This year, IELTS-Blog.com turned 19 years old, and the team and I have worked tirelessly to make your IELTS prep experience even better.

We added lots of helpful IELTS advice to our website, updated all our books, and welcomed so many new members to our IELTS VIP Club. It’s been amazing to see people from all over the world join us—this community just keeps growing. Your inspiring success stories as high achievers kept pouring in—they’re proof that all this hard work is paying off!

IELTS High Scorers

We introduced the IELTS Diagnostics Package, where I personally guide students to identify their weaknesses, create personalised plans, and help them reach their target scores faster. We also enhanced our Writing Correction Service, enabling students to achieve even better results with clear, actionable feedback.

Another highlight was coaching an exclusive group of students one-on-one, helping them overcome challenges and make remarkable progress. Watching their confidence grow has been incredibly fulfilling.

IELTS Diagnostics package

At the start of the year, I published the Set 7 book in the High Scorer’s Choice Series, and I’m thrilled to announce that at the very start of 2025, I’ll release a brand-new IELTS book that’s been two years in the making. It’s designed to help you master IELTS faster than any other book, and I can’t wait for you to see it!
