Recent IELTS Speaking questions from Japan – March 2025
Our thoughtful subscriber A recently took IELTS in Japan and remembered these Speaking questions:
Speaking test
Part 1 (Interview)
– Do you like your job? Why or why not?
– Do you prefer working from home or in an office? Why?
– Did you ride a bicycle when you were younger?
– How popular is cycling in your country?
– Do you think more people will choose to ride bicycles in the future? Why or why not?
– What are some benefits of riding a bicycle?
– Do you think cities should invest more in bicycle-friendly infrastructure?
– Would you consider using a bicycle as your main form of transportation?
Part 2 (Cue Card)
Describe an older person who is interesting to you. You should say:
– who the person is
– where the person lives
– what the person does
and explain why you find this person interesting.
Part 3 (Discussion)
– Do you think older people are good at using technology? Why or why not?
– In 10 – 20 years, do you think more elderly people will be comfortable using technology? Why?
– Why do some families choose to live with their grandparents?
– What are the benefits for both grandparents and grandchildren when they live together?
– How can technology help older people stay connected with their families?
– What challenges do older people face when learning to use new technology?

Writing test
Writing task 1 (a report)
The line graph below shows the average high and low temperatures in Glasgow, Scotland, over the course of a year, while the table provides information on the average monthly rainfall and sunshine hours.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
* Note: this is not the original chart given in the test, it was recreated for the purpose of demonstration.
Writing task 2 (an essay)
Some people think children should go to school at an early age, while others think children should not go to school until they are older.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Recent IELTS Speaking questions from the UK – March 2025
Thanks to our student’s kind contribution, today we are sharing the Speaking questions from her recent IELTS test in the UK. Use them to prepare for your exam!
Speaking test
Part 1 (Interview)
– Where do you currently live?
– Do you think your area is a good place for young people to live? Why or why not?
– Do you like drawing? Why or why not?
– How many art classes did you have in school?
– What was the last party you attended?
– Do you prefer big parties or small gatherings? Why?
– Do you think time passes more quickly when using social media?
– How can people manage their time more effectively?
Part 2 (Cue Card)
Describe a situation when you decided to stay somewhere longer than planned. You should say:
– where it was
– why you decided to stay longer
– what you did during that time
and explain how you felt about the experience.
Part 3 (Discussion)
– Are you a punctual person? Why or why not?
– How do you feel when others do not respect people’s time?
– How do you usually remember important dates?
– Why do some people struggle with time management?
– Do you think technology has helped or worsened people’s ability to manage their time?
– How important is it to balance social life and personal responsibilities?

IELTS Writing Test – General Training
Writing task 1 (a letter)
You are leaving your current job to start a new position at another company. Write a letter to one of your colleagues. In your letter
– Describe your new job and the company.
– Say when you will be leaving your current job.
– Suggest a time for a farewell party.
Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Writing task 2 (an essay)
Some people believe that schools should teach children how advertisements influence their purchasing decisions.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Our student MB has just taken his IELTS exam in India and couldn’t wait to share his Speaking questions with everyone. Use them to prepare for your exam!
Speaking test
Part 1 (Interview)
– Can you describe your hometown?
– What do you like most about your hometown?
– What age group is your hometown most suitable for? Why?
– Has your hometown changed a lot over the years?
– Do you think young people prefer living in big cities or small towns? Why?
– What facilities are available for young people in your hometown?
– Would you like to continue living in your hometown in the future? Why or why not?
– What is one thing you would change about your hometown?
Part 2 (Cue Card)
Describe an event that surprised you. You should say:
– what the event was
– when and where it happened
– why it was surprising
and explain how you felt about it.
Part 3 (Discussion)
– What is the connection between a person’s behavior and their happiness?
– Do you think happiness is something people are born with, or is it learnt over time?
– How can you tell if someone is truly happy? What are the signs?
– How do happy events or good news affect people when they are feeling sad or stressed?
– Do you think happiness means the same thing for different generations? Why or why not?
– What role does society play in shaping people’s happiness?

Writing task 1 (a letter)
You recently became a member of a sports club, but you have noticed some issues that need to be addressed. Write a letter to the club manager. In your letter:
– Explain why you decided to join the sports club.
– Describe the problems you have encountered.
– Suggest what the manager could do to improve the situation.
Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Writing task 2 (an essay)
Some parents believe that reading books for entertainment is a waste of time for children and that they should only read educational books.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Describe something you lost. You should say:

Writing task 1 (a letter)
Your child’s school is organising a week-long overseas trip, and the principal is looking for parents to join as volunteers. Write a letter to express your interest. In your letter:
– Explain why you would like to join the trip.
– Ask some general questions about the trip.
– Describe how you can contribute to the trip as a parent.
Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Writing task 2 (an essay)
Some people believe that the most important skill for nurses is strong medical knowledge, while others think that other qualities are more essential.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
