Latest IELTS questions from the USA – May 2025 (General Training)

Our student LT kindly shared the writing questions from her recent IELTS exam in the USA, below:

IELTS Writing Test – General Training

Writing task 1 (a letter)

You have been scheduled to take part in a computer training course next month, but you are unable to participate. Write a letter to your manager. In your letter:

– Explain why the training is important to you
– Describe why you are unable to be there
– Ask for an alternative arrangement or time

Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Writing task 2 (an essay)

Nowadays, many people prefer to enjoy entertainment at home rather than going out.

Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

New IELTS Speaking questions from Canada – May 2025

Our generous subscriber JP recently took the IELTS test in Canada. Here are the Speaking questions he remembered:

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

– Can you describe the area where you currently live?
– Do you enjoy listening to music?
– What kind of music do you like the most?
– Have you ever been to a live concert?
– Do you play any musical instruments?
– Who is your favourite musician or singer?
– How often do you listen to music?
– Do you prefer international or local music? Why?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a place you visited where the air was polluted. You should say:

– where the place was
– when you visited it
– why the air was not good

– and explain how you felt about the place.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Are coastal cities more or less polluted than inland cities? Why?
– Why do you think cities tend to be more polluted than rural areas?
– What should governments do to help reduce pollution?
– What actions can individuals take to reduce pollution?
– How can technology help reduce environmental pollution?
– Do you think pollution will get better or worse in the future?

Our lovely student J remembered and shared the following writing tasks after taking her IELTS exam in the UK:

Writing test

Writing task 1 (a report)

The graph below describes the use of fixed telephone lines, mobile phones, and internet between 1994 and 2005 in China.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Writing task 2 (an essay)

Some believe that people who choose a job early and keep doing it for longer are more likely to get a satisfying career life than those who frequently change jobs.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Our student JP kindly shared the writing questions from his very recent IELTS exam in Canada, below:

IELTS Writing Test – General Training

Writing task 1 (a letter)

You have been selected to work on an important project at your company. Write a letter to your manager to thank him/her. In your letter:

– explain why you think you were chosen for this project
– suggest a colleague who would be a suitable team member
– ask a question about the project

Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Writing task 2 (an essay)

In many education systems, subjects such as maths and science are seen as more important than arts subjects such as drama and literature.

What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

– Do you work or are you a student?
– What do you like most about your work or studies?
– Can you describe your hometown?
– What is your favourite thing about your hometown?
– Do you think it’s beneficial to learn different languages?
– Which languages would you like to learn and why?
– How can knowing multiple languages help people in life?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe an elderly person you know who lives a happy life. You should say:

– who this person is
– where and how they live
– what makes them happy

and explain why you think they live a happy life.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Do you think many elderly people live happy lives?
– Would you say that elderly people have an important role in society? Why?
– How can technology assist older people in their daily lives?
– What are some challenges elderly people face today?
– How can communities support the well-being of elderly people?
– Do you think young and old people can learn from each other? How?

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Research shows that the transportation of goods and people is now one of the biggest sources of pollution worldwide. Some people believe that managing this pollution is the responsibility of governments, while others believe it is up to individuals.

These questions were shared by TL who took IELTS in Canada very recently. Here is what she remembered:

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

– Do you work or are you a student?
– What is your typical work or study schedule?
– What do you usually do in a normal day?
– Do you enjoy your daily routine? Why or why not?
– Do you prefer a busy schedule or a relaxed one?
– How do you organise your time during the day?
– Do you often have to change your schedule?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a piece of clothing that you received as a gift. You should say:

– what it was
– who gave it to you
– when you received it

and explain how you felt about receiving it.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Why do people like receiving clothes as gifts?
– How important is fashion in your country?
– Do young people and older people have different opinions about fashion?
– Why do some people prefer to wear traditional clothing?
– How do clothing styles influence people’s confidence?
– Do you think fashion trends change too quickly these days?

Part 1 (Interview)

– Do you work or study?
– Why did you choose this job?
– Do you prefer using a laptop or a desktop computer? Why?
– How often do you use a computer for work or study?
– Do you think time passes more quickly when you are using a computer?
– What are the advantages of using the Internet?
– What are the disadvantages of using the Internet?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe an interesting building you have seen. You should say:

– where it is
– what it looks like
– what function it has

and explain why you think it is interesting.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Why do some people prefer to build their own house instead of buying an existing one?
– Should governments focus more on protecting land or building more houses?
– What types of natural places do people most like to visit?
– Why do some people feel scared of certain places?
– How do historic buildings attract visitors?

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

– Do you like listening to music?
– What kind of music do you enjoy most?
– When do you usually listen to music?
– Did you listen to a lot of music when you were a child?
– Have your tastes in music changed over time?
– Do you prefer listening to live music or recorded music?
– Have you ever been to a live concert?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a line (or a few words) that you remember from a poem or song. You should say:

– what it is
– which song or poem it is from
– how you knew it

and explain how you feel about it

Part 3 (Discussion)

– What can people learn from songs or poems?
– Do you think it is easier for children to learn a song or poem than adults? Why?
– Do you think children enjoy the rhythm of songs or poems? Why?
– Are you good at memorising things?
– How can memorising songs or poems benefit students?
– Why do some people find it difficult to memorise information?

IELTS Writing Test – General Training

Writing task 1 (a letter)

Your friend is coming to your city to attend a family wedding. You have booked a hotel for him/her, but you are unable to pick him/her up at the airport. Write a letter to your friend. In your letter:

– Explain why you cannot meet him/her at the airport
– Describe how he/she can get to the hotel
– Offer to meet him/her later at the hotel

Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Writing task 2 (an essay)

Some people believe that older employees are more valuable to a company than younger employees. Others believe that younger employees are more useful.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
