New IELTS questions from Japan – February 2025 (General Training)
Our friend TK recently took the IELTS test in Japan and remembered the following writing questions:
IELTS Writing Test – General Training
Writing task 1 (a letter)
Your colleague recently got a new job at another company. Write a letter to him/her. In your letter:
– Express how you feel about his/her departure
– Say what you enjoyed the most while working together
– Ask about his/her future plans.
Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Writing task 2 (an essay)
Some people believe that hospitals should spend more money on new medical technology, while others argue that those funds should be allocated to doctors and nurses.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Our subscriber MS took the IELTS test in Australia last week and was asked the following questions in his speaking test:
Speaking test
Part 1 (Interview)
– What is your name?
– Do you work or study?
– Why did you choose this field of work?
– What are your main responsibilities at work?
– Do you enjoy your job? Why or why not?
– What skills are most important for your job?
– How do you manage your responsibilities at work?
– Do you prefer working alone or in a team? Why?
– Would you like to change your job in the future?
Part 2 (Cue Card)
Describe something you bought but had to return. You should say:
– what the item was
– where you bought it
– why you decided to return it
and explain how you felt about returning it.
Part 3 (Discussion)
– What are some common reasons why people return items after buying them?
– How has online shopping changed the way people buy products?
– Do you think advertisements influence people’s shopping habits? Why or why not?
– How can consumers be more responsible when making purchases?
– Do you think people buy more than they need because of advertising? Why?
– What impact does consumerism have on the environment?

Part 1 (Interview)
– What is your name?
– Where are you from?
– Do you work or study?
– Do you remember any of your childhood toys?
– Do you watch advertisements?
– Are advertisements important? Why?
– Did you happen to see an advertisement you didn’t like?
Part 2 (Cue Card)
Talk about a family member you would like to work with. You should say:
– who the family member is
– what kind of work you would like to do together
– why you think they would be a good work partner
and explain how you would feel about working with this person.
Part 3 (Discussion)
– What kind of businesses are more popular in your country?
– Do you enjoy doing business with family members?
– Why do some people dislike doing business with their family members?
– How has technology and the Internet impacted the business world?
– Do you think small businesses will disappear in the future? Why or why not?
– What is the impact of technology on globalisation?

Describe a time when you missed an important appointment. You should say:
– what the appointment was for

and explain what you did afterward.

Writing task 1 (a letter)
You recently had a positive experience at a department store where a staff member was very helpful to you. Write a letter to the store manager. In your letter:
– Mention which part of the store you visited.
– Describe how the staff member assisted you.
– Suggest what you would like the manager to do to reward their good service.
Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Writing task 2 (an essay)
In many countries, governments and individuals spend too much money on national celebrations such as New Year and religious festivals.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
