IELTS Speaking questions from the UK – December 2024
Our lovely subscriber AH recently took IELTS in the UK and remembered the following questions from his Speaking test:
Speaking test
Part 1 (Interview)
– What is your name?
– Where are you from?
– Is it the place where you grew up?
– Can you tell me something about where you grew up?
– Why is the place where you grew up famous?
– What is your occupation?
– What is your daily routine like?
– Do you have any plans to change your daily routine in the future? Why?
Part 2 (Cue Card)
Describe an expensive piece of clothing you received as a present. You should say:
– who gave it to you and why
– when you wore it
– what it looked like
and explain how you felt about receiving this present.
Part 3 (Discussion)
– How important are clothing and shoes for people in daily life?
– Do you think social influencers should promote traditional dressing styles? Why or why not?
– How does advertising influence the way people view traditional clothing?
– Should governments do more to preserve traditional clothing styles?
– Why do you think some people prefer modern clothing over traditional styles?
– How can traditional clothing be made more appealing to younger generations?

Writing task 2 (an essay)
Many people believe that reducing the income gap between the rich and the poor can lead to a happier society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Our lovely student M recently took IELTS in the UAE and remembered the following questions from his Speaking test:
Speaking test
Part 1 (Interview)
– Where are you from?
– Are you a student or do you work?
– How often do you wear T-shirts?
– Do you prefer to dress casually or formally? Why?
– Have you ever given someone a T-shirt as a gift?
– What type of clothing is popular in your country?
– What would you wear to a special occasion such as a wedding?
Part 2 (Cue Card)
Describe a medal or prize you received in sports. You should say
– what the medal or prize was for
– when and where you received it
– how you felt about receiving it
and explain why this achievement was important to you.
Part 3 (Discussion)
– Why is it important to give prizes to children?
– Do you think giving prizes motivates children to do better?
– Are academic prizes more meaningful than sports prizes? Why or why not?
– Should children receive participation prizes, or only for winning?
– How can schools balance rewarding academic and non-academic achievements?
– Do you think prizes encourage healthy competition, or can they create pressure?

Speaking test
Part 1 (Interview)
– Do you work or study?
– Can you tell me about your primary school teacher?
– What was your favorite subject in primary school?
– Why did you enjoy that subject?
– Do you think primary schools have changed over the years? How?
– Did you have any school trips or special activities in primary school?
– Do you still keep in touch with any of your primary school friends?
Part 2 (Cue Card)
Describe a place you have visited that had a lot of wildlife or flowers. You should say:
– where the place is
– what kinds of wildlife or flowers you saw there
– what you did there
and explain why this place was special to you.
Part 3 (Discussion)
– Do you think conservation is important? Why or why not?
– What can the government do to protect endangered species?
– How can individuals contribute to wildlife conservation?
– Do you think zoos play a role in protecting animals? Why or why not?
– How can schools teach children about the importance of conservation?
– What impact does urbanisation have on wildlife and natural habitats?

– Can you describe your home?
– Do you live in a house or an apartment?
– How long have you lived there?
– What do you like most about your home?
– Would you like to change anything about your home?
– What is your neighborhood like?
– Do you prefer living in a busy city or a quiet area? Why?
– What is your ideal type of accommodation?
Part 2 (Cue Card)
Describe a time when you were stuck in traffic. You should say:
– when and where it happened
– how long you were stuck
– what you did while waiting
and explain how you felt about being stuck in traffic.
Part 3 (Discussion)
– Why do you think traffic congestion is a problem in many cities?
– What can governments do to reduce traffic congestion?
– How does heavy traffic affect people’s daily lives?
– Do you think public transportation is a good solution to traffic problems? Why or why not?
– What are the advantages of carpooling?
– How might technology help in reducing traffic congestion in the future?

Talk about a discussion you had with a friend or friends. You should say
– when you had the discussion
– where you were
– what the discussion was about
and explain how you felt after the discussion.
Part 3 (Discussion)
– Do you often agree with your friends during discussions? Why or why not?
– Why is it important to have healthy discussions with friends?
– What should parents do when disciplining their children?
– Do you think parents and teachers should work together to discipline children?
– What is the government in your country doing to raise awareness about healthy eating?
