Serial Killers – Evil Partners in Crime

From all my studies in forensics and criminology, my primary interest is in serial crime – specifically serial murder. One of the most interesting aspects in what we know today about serial killers is that there have been many partners in this type of crime.

Whenever we see a serial killer portrayed, we see this lone wolf, solitary, psychopath with sick, twisted fantasies that is driven to search for his victims by his overwhelming compulsion. It has been estimated that approximately 10 to 25 ...

Moms Who Probably Don't Deserve Flowers This Year

As we prepare to celebrate Mothers' Day at the end of this weekend, our thoughts rightfully turn to all of the wonderful characteristics embodied by so many moms. Pastel cards with flowers drawn across the front tell of moms who offer a sympathetic ear, a hug to cure a broken heart or a broken arm, and unconditional love. However, what would this blog be without an examination of mothers who do not quite live up to standards put forth every year by Hallmark. Here are three moms who may not be...

Finding Story Balance in Dead Game with New Character Jordan Smith

I consistently receive comments about the supporting character of Jordan Smith in my latest novel " Dead Game ". I hear questions like… What's up with this Jordan character? Is he based on someone you know? What made you create this particular character to go up against strong, confident Emily Stone?

As I was outlining " Dead Game ", I realized that there was just something missing in the story. I had an ultra creepy serial killer hunting his unsuspecting victims by an interactive computer game. E...

Shocking Statistics about Human Trafficking

I try to keep up to date on various things in the forensic and criminology fields when I'm not writing. Basically, I read and study whenever I have a spare moment. Sometimes when I come across information that really makes me pause for a moment and take a deep breath in disbelief, I feel compelled to post it.

I just read a report from the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on the statistics of human trafficking. This is a significant problem and seems to be steadily rising worldw...

Help Me Spread the Word!

I have received some wonderful reviews for "Dead Game ", the new release in my series of novels featuring Emily Stone . I am so thankful for the readers who enjoyed my first book, "Compulsion" , and came back for a second helping of psychological thrills. I also welcome those who are discovering Emily Stone and her mission to rid the world of sexual predators and serial killers one criminal at a time. Your words of support, your generous compliments, and especially your constructive criticism h...

The Evolving New World of DNA

The use of DNA technology is growing in every country around the world. DNA databases help to solve crimes, identify missing individuals, aid identification in mass disasters or past conflicts, assist with cold cases, and exonerate the innocent. The power of DNA can't be overstated in the world of forensic science and crime scene investigation.

Within the past twenty years, there has been an improved understanding of how DNA systems and databases can be used more effectively. There is no doubt...

Searching for Emily Stone

As you have probably guessed, I love watching cop dramas and high-action thrillers whenever I can in addition to reading this genre. Last week, I watched a movie thriller Whiteout with a good author friend of mine that starred Kate Beckinsale. It was about a US Marshall tracking a killer in the Antarctica three days before winter sets in for a long six months. It wasn't the best action movie I've seen, but it was entertaining enough with some exciting cat and mouse scenes.

What immediately str...

Does Technology Reduce Our Humanity?

In my new book " Dead Game" , which is the second in a series of Emily Stone novels, the serial killer who is the focus of law enforcement's efforts stalks his victims in an internet gaming community. He attacks men and women who want to participate in a virtual murder and crime-solving investigation, but who instead find themselves dead at the hands of a very real killer.

I chose to focus on the technological world as the primary environment for this book because our computers, phones, and othe...
