A Crime Solving Partnership for DNA Evidence

In 1986, DNA was first officially used to solve a crime of two young girls raped and murdered in the English Midlands. Today, DNA is commonplace in criminal investigations and court proceedings to link a suspect to the crime and to exonerate the innocent who have been wrongfully convicted.

DNA is a naturally occurring substance and is the main component of cellular chromosomes that is the genetic characteristics in all life forms. It is a large macromolecule that consists of two strands coiled...

Sex Offender Arrested in Connection with Missing Girl in California

It breaks my heart when another week starts with news of a missing teenager and the apprehension of a convicted sex offender who may be involved in her disappearance. Of course any crime involving a minor is horrifying, but the story of Chelsea King hits particularly close to home as the search for her is underway in my home state of California.

Seventeen-year-old Chelsea was last seen on Thursday afternoon going for a run at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park in San Diego. Her car has been di...

Who Was the First "Internet Serial Killer"?

In my new release, Dead Game , I explore the world of social networking and how it can be used by someone who has murderous intentions. With the anonymity and instant communication that can occur through our wireless world, law enforcement is constantly challenged to keep up with the ways in which criminals operate in this cyber-landscape. Heroine Emily Stone , who readers first met in my book Compulsion , delves into this terrifying world and discovers how technology that can be used for so muc...

What Makes a Terrifying Villain?

Why serial killers?

I've been asked this question many times since my new release of Dead Game . Why serial killers? The very words "serial killer" scares me. It conjures up images of a madman wielding an ax coming after me in the dead of night and help is nowhere to be found. Or, running out of gas on a deserted country road and the nearest town is twenty miles away and there's no signal for my cell phone…

Seriously, images like this run through my mind as I begin to create a serial killer for ...

Firearms Evidence and the Crime Scene Investigation

A common form of evidence found at many crime scenes is firearms evidence. It can be in the form of a gun, shell casings, bullets, or any combination. This type of evidence can be found in related crimes such as murder, attempted murder, suicide, assault, and rape.

It's a fascinating and challenging technique for forensic scientists to begin to discover all of the characteristics of a particular firearm and how it was applied to the crime.

Firearms evidence can answer so many questions at a cri...

Change the Perspective of Your Characters

When I begin developing my characters for my novels, especially with Compulsion and Dead Game , I find it helpful to outline the main characters from various perspectives. It helps me to build them with more depth and to answer various questions about their personalities instead of just a list of traits, likes, dislikes, and internal/external conflicts.

This idea came to light when I was visiting the Santa Barbara Zoo in California on a recent trip. This wonderful, small zoo located in the hear...
