Sarge's Big Find This Weekend!

Sarge is now 40 pounds, 4 months, and full of big fun! We went out this weekend to play in the park and the soccer field at a nearby elementary school.

Well, little did I know that Sarge would find the most disgusting, worn out, sad looking soccer ball on earth that he loves more than any other toy. Yuck! After he trotted the entire soccer field with his prize held high, I didn't have the heart to toss away the ball. He only gets to play with it when we go to the soccer field. I thought that ...

Pizza Proves to Be the Downfall for a California Serial Killer

We often see in the world of forensics that is most seemingly mundane object can become the one piece of evidence that tracks down a killer. A discarded tissue, a foot print, a tiny streak of paint along a car door—all of these could put a murderer behind bars. This week, my home state of California offered us another example of such commonplace evidence when it used a slice of pizza to find a serial killer who had eluded law enforcement for decades.

Lonnie David Franklin, Jr. was arrested in...

How to Relax and Take a Timeout From Such a Stressful World

It's been like a double whammy for me, writing about stressful things like serial killers in both "Compulsion" and "Dead Game", and dealing with tough times of the economy. It seems that there is nothing but bad news these days.

I've found, more than ever, how important it is to take a break during my day or a short timeout to just relax without any interruptions. It helps to keep your spirits high and your mind clear from unnecessary things. We are bombarded with too many negative things each...

Could Emily & Rick Compete with Olivia & Elliot?

Law & Order SVU is a show where the detectives of the Special Victims Unit are a fictional version of the 16th Precinct of the New York City Police Department (NYPD). In the style of the original Law & Order, episodes are often "ripped from the headlines" or loosely based on a real crime that received media attention of serial rapists, pedophiles, and sexual predators.

The show stars Christopher Meloni as Detective Elliot Stabler, a senior detective in the Manhattan SVU, and Mariska Hargitay a...

Mom of Murder Victim faces Criticism in the Press

My interest in forensic psychology does not focus only on the men and women who choose to engage in violent crime. While I am curious about what makes a person decide to become a child rapist or a murderer, the other personalities that are drawn into these tragedies fascinate me as well. A recent story on the CNN website features a mother who lost a daughter to violence but who also is receiving some criticism for her own decisions and mindset.

Five-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan was kidnapped last...

Are You a Puzzle Solver?

I love puzzles – especially jigsaw puzzles. Right now, I have several 1000 piece puzzles that have been recently assembled in my closet to prove it! I generally like beautiful puzzle photographs of the ocean, beach, or outdoors. I find it relaxing and fun, and it takes my mind off of whatever novel I'm currently working on. I'd like to try my hand at 5,000 or 10,000 piece puzzles, but I never have the room or time to tackle this size of project.

Did you know that one of the definitions of "jig...
