Search Underway for a Woman Who Threw Puppies into a River

Anyone who knows me or who is a regular reader of this blog is aware of my love for animals. I have two dogs and two cats and you will find plenty of photographs of these important members of my family on my website. So, when I read about someone who has treated animals cruelly, my emotions run high. A video recently posted on YouTube of all places reveals a woman whose actions are incomprehensible.

The posted video, which appears to have been shot with full knowledge of the person on camera, ...

California's "Box Cutter" Given Multiple Life Sentences

While not earning the title of serial killer as none of his attacks proved fatal, serial attacker Charles Juan Proctor learned of his fate in a California courtroom yesterday. And, I cannot imagine the penalty could have been much more severe if he had indeed murdered someone.

Proctor, who became known as "The Box Cutter," was sentenced to 433 years plus eleven life sentences on twenty-two charges including robbery, attempted murder, and mayhem. In 2008, Proctor went on a violent spree with a ...

My Experiences Inside Police K9 Dog Training

For my new novel, " Silent Partner ", which will be released by fall of this year, I spent quite a bit of time training and observing with the police K9 in my area. This is generally not a training exercise and certification for civilians, but I was allowed to train my dog and certify in scent detection for drugs. I then joined the K9 association, which allowed me to participate in school and prison searches as well as exhibitions.

It was an incredible experience for me. I began making notes...

States Ask Craigslist to Remove Adult Services

Most of you are familiar with the case of the accused "Craigslist killer" Philip Markoff, who used the online marketplace to contact a young woman advertising herself as a masseuse. Markoff allegedly killed the woman in a Boston hotel room. A verdict in that murder will never be known, however, because Markoff recently committed suicide in jail with the surgical precision and anatomical know-how that he had obtained in medical school.

Seventeen states, in part due to the crime for which Markof...

Reconstructing a Shooting Incident from the Crime Scene

One of the most difficult and scientific parts of reconstructing a shooting incident is to determine the direction of the projectile travel and the angle of impact by examining the bullet holes that were left behind at the scene.

The projectile hole at the impact site must be identified as bullet hole before continuing with the investigation and examination. There are many things to consider, such as entrance versus exit, entrance angle, and direction of travel. All of these clues will help in...

From Writer's Digest – A Judge's Commentary for Thriller Novel "Compulsion"

" Jennifer , you're an excellent wordsmith with solid fiction fundamentals. The premise of your novel is compelling, and I was drawn in by that first haunting surveillance of the child killer. I think you did an excellent job developing Emily's character and making her a very likable, believable heroine. I also think your dialogue is very strong. The voices are clear and distinct, and you did a great job using dialogue to not only pick up the pace but also advance the plot and reveal character...

Father Found Guilty of Killing Daughter and Freezing Her

Despite the talent my home state seems to have for producing a disproportionate number of the violent criminals I have covered on this blog, I promise that California is filled with wonderful, peaceful people. However, this last week brought a horrific case from Santa Ana back into the news. The father who claimed he stuffed his adult daughter into a freezer after her death because he could not bear to be apart from her has been found guilty of first-degree murder during the commission of to...
