Thanks!
If you weren’t able to make it and still want a copy of the book, there are signed copies available at the Port Aransas Art Center. Or, if you already bought one from amazon.com or elsewhere and want it autographed, let me know. We can meet for coffee and I’ll inscribe something just for you.
A lot of people said that they wanted to be kept up to date on my writing exploits, so I’ll be sending out an e-newsletter. If you want to be on the mailing list, send your email address to me at devorahfox@aol.com.
Thanks again, everyone!

Zip and Dash to Los Angeles
This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Kia Rio for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.
Looking for a little adventure this summer? How about going on a scavenger hunt? The locale is Los Angeles. Follow two couples as they "Zip and Dash to Los Angeles," discover L.A.’s landmarks and find hidden clues to the ultimate prize: meeting a Hollywood celebrity.
Rio Explorer Page Kia has sent two pairs of hunters on the “Zip and Dash to Los Angeles,” a geocache challenge. One team is a couple making their first visit to the city. The other couple is from California and they think they know L.a. well. They're both driving a 2012 Kia Rio 5-door. In search of Christina Milian, the two teams use the Kia Rio’s features:
Bluetooth
USB jack
navigation
rear camera display
UVO Technology and Kia's UVO technology. UVO stands for 'Your Voice,' and it gives the driver access to the Kia Rio's multimedia and infotainment systems. For me, the rear camera display would definitely take the stress out of backing!
Check out this video and follow the two teams as they tour around L.A., looking for clues. I thought the letter cubes clue at Griffith Park was the toughest. Counting the palm trees on Rodeo Drive and finding the CD at Amoeba Records seemed pretty easy and and I loved the QR code clue at Pink's a famous hot dog stand. Which team do you think will find Christina first, the tourists or the Californians?

Postcard from Camp

Camp NaNoWriMo was not without challenges and drama. During Week 1 my keyboard broke right the middle of a sentence. During Week 2, a seagull ate my hot dog. During Week 3, my network switch died and I lost my Internet connection. At this point in my writing I was doing a lot of research online, so Internet problems had me dead in the water. Fortunately a neighbor who knows way more about connectivity than I do was able to swap cables around and get me back online until I could obtain and install a new switch.
Displaying the “never-say-die” spirit we NaNoWriMos are famous for, I soldiered on and met the 50K word goal. True, 50,000 words does not make a complete commercial novel. Those usually run at least 65,000 words and are more like 75,000, 85,000 or even 100,000 words long. However someone who has 50K words under her belt is likely to go on to finish the story, maybe even publish it. That was my experience when I did my first writing marathon, NaNoWriMo 2010. I finished two days and 62 words ahead of schedule. I continued to chip away at the project through the following year and at the end of 2011, The Lost King was published.
Speaking of The Lost King, I’ll be signing copies of that book during First Friday at the Port Aransas Art Center, July 6, 2012. You can also enjoy free music and refreshments at the same time and check out the winners or the Coastal Bend Wildlife Photo Contest. The Art Center is located at 323 N. Alister in Port Aransas. Hope to see you there.

Postcard from Camp NaNoWriMo, Week 2

I am making great progress and am at about 35000 words. Campers who were on track were treated to a beach campfire-and-cookout Sunday night. The 20-plus mph wind made getting the fire going a challenge. (I should have paid better attention to the firestarting instructions during camp orientation!). But finally the coals got glowing and the hot dogs got roasted. I had two and would have had three except a seagull swooped in and snatched one from me—right out of the bun! I tried making S’mores for dessert but never could get the marshmallows to toast the way I remembered from summer camps of days gone by. I maintain that it’s because marshamallows are made differently today but it could be that I’ve simply lost my campfire touch!

Postcard from Camp NaNo

And I was well on my way to getting out The Next Great American Novel when my keyboard broke. No biggie, you’re thinking. Just go get another one. They’re a dime a dozen and all over the place. Which is true.
Except for this one. The unusual, idiosyncratic, ergonomic keyboard that I’ve been using for decades (this was my third!), the Lite On SK 6000, not only is NOT to be found all over the place, it’s not even manufactured anymore. Hasn’t been for years.
I did have a conventional keyboard and mouse lying around so I could get back to work, after a fashion. But trying to keep pace in a writing marathon using an unfamiliar keyboard and mouse is like trying to compete in a decathlon wearing someone else’s Nikes.
Two dear friends to the rescue!! One found an SK 6000 for sale on eBay, and the other found one on a dusty shelf in a used computer store in San Antonio. MY HEROS!! You know who’s getting a dedication in my next novel.

All Fired Up!
Speaking of Brenda Barnett, mark your calendars for the Potters on Cotter anniversary celebration Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the studio at 413 E. Cotter Ave. in Port Aransas.
And speaking of calendars and First Fridays, plan now to attend the July 6, 2012 First Friday at the Art Center because in addition to the great art, music and snacks, I’ll be signing The Lost King. The King’s fortunes must be improving because he can now be found in more places. You can now find copies at the Port Aransas Art Center. My thanks to the board for making my books available and inviting me to sign them in July. See you then!
