Interview with the author of The Division of the Damned Richard Rhys Jones

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
Hi, my name is Richard Rhys Jones, Reggie to my friends and I hail from the wind bitten hills of Colwyn Bay, north Wales. I'm the wrong side of forty, the right side of fifty, married with two children, one cat and currently live in Salzgitter, Germany.
Horror is my genre but vampires were always my favorite monster. I always knew that if I was going to pen a book, then I would definitely include or write about ‘the children of the night’.
I watched all the Dracula movies as a kid and I read Bram Stoker’s classic three times. When I finally bought a computer and went online I visited every vampire folklore site I could find, it really flicked my switch.
I’ll admit to being a tad disappointed at how the new era of sparkly, romance vampires have changed the scene; the haemovores in my book are ugly, savage beasts that definitely do not glimmer in daylight. However, the tradition of the vampire is as fascinating to me now as it was when I watched my first Christopher Lee film.
Please tell us about your latest release.
"The Division of the Damned" is, broadly speaking, about Himmler sending a squad of SS to Transylvaniato raise a division of vampires. The Nazis have a serum for the Count's soldiers against the sun, but in return they must fight for the Third Reich.
The Third Reich and vampires always seemed to go hand in hand to me. Both themes hold dark, Gothic edges that manage to inspire sinister thoughts, and yet the real trick was fitting them together seamlessly.
The idea for the story suddenly clicked into place while I was at work. The German colleague I was teamed up with had an accent I didn’t quite recognize. At first I’d placed him as being from Bavaria but the more we worked together, the more I was convinced he wasn’t German. Finally I asked him.
His family originally came from Transylvania, he told me. Siebenbergen, (the German name for the area) has a large German speaking community. A German colony in Transylvania, it was perfect. I had my link and the rest was research and history.
I also slipped a lot of other things that have interested me over the years, and welded them into the story. Sumerian and Biblical mythology, Lilith, Teutonic Knights, werewolves, the Concentration camp system, the Eastern front; you name it, if I'd read a book on it, I lodged it in there and the result was The Division of the Damned.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
I think if I have a favourite character, it's one of the SS called Rohleder. A survivor of a flame thrower attack, he's horribly scarred and very cynical. However, his mutilated outer shell conceals an inner core of compassion and a comically dry outlook on life. I had Rohleder fall in love, which was very hard for me to write as I generally stay away from such goings on when I read. The woman of his affections, a refugee who had witnessed the horror of the Eastern front herself, looks past the disfigurement and falls for the man inside. I'm quite proud of what I did there and I really feel that, regardless of how cheesy it may sound, I struck the right balance in their relationship. I won't put down what happens though.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
Ah, a fave scene, now this is tricky. It would have to be the climax of the story. The SS, who turned their backs on the Reich when they realized that the Dracyl really was a vampire and not a figment of Heinrich Himmler's imagination, have ridden to fight the vampires with silver swords and bullets stolen from Wewelsberg castle. They gather under a tree that has mythical connotations in both Christian and Sumerian legend to do battle. Unfortunately it all goes wrong and it's up to a young lady to save the day. Does she, doesn't she?I'm not saying.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
I haven't the time to answer this question, we'd be here all week. I LOVE research and for this story I really went to town. Lilith, who I'm sure your readers know about, was a new entity to me. She figures a lot in my book and, to be honest, doesn't quite receive the recognition she deserves for her part in the story.
Then there's the confusion of the hung Jesus myth, which I wrote about in my Blog not so long ago, (http://divisionofthedamned.blogspot.de/2012/07/jesus-was-hung-on-tree.html)The list goes on and on, and it was all stuff that I love.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book? How does this world differ from our normal world?
In my world, vampires are real. They have an agenda and are willing to use man's folly and vanity for their gain. I have the victims of the Third Reich being used as food and soldiers for the Count's army. Himmler deciding the war is lost on the basis of one photo sent by the SS squad and Russian regiments being decimated by blood crazed demons.
I have Lilith, who writes an ancient tome called The Book of Blood at the same time the prehistoric Mesopotamian city states where blooming into civilization. The Book of Blood is the path the vampire bloodline takes to escape the curse of the Sumerian sun god, Finally, in my world mankind is protected from the apex predators by an ancient curse, but one that could have been broken on the Winter Solstice of 1944.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
The drums! I play the drums in a Hardcore/Metal band called Due Vengeance. It's nothing serious; we're all just shift working dads who find it hard to let our earlier passions go. But instead of growing old gracefully and turning to the Blues, we decided to stick with Hardcore/Metal.
I also write the lyrics for a band called Gods Will Be Done. They're a Thrash Metal outfit, (so don't expect subtle prose) and I'm very proud to be associated with them. Their drummer is brilliant, I mean it, the guy has eight limbs or something. They call him Spiderman.
What was the last amazing book you read?
Well, it wasn't a vampire one!
"Run" by Blake Crouch had me gripped from the start to the end.  A great read, lacking sadly in the blood sucking department.
The last great vampire book I read was Vigil by Craig Saunders.
What can readers expect next from you?
I have a collection of four short stories called "An age of Beasts", (working title, subject to change). I took a couple of ancient Greek and Roman legends and changed them a tad to give them a horror slant. For example, the "Three Hundred Spartans" become the "The Vampires of Sparta". The "Wooden Horse of Troy" is the "Wooden Wolf of Troy". I also have one called "The Bloody Ides of March" about Caesar being a vampire and only Brutus knows and the story I'm still writing is about Spartacus and his cannibal army decimating Italy. I've had a tentative nod from Taylor Street, we'll have to see if that crystallizes into something definite.
When they're finished I'll be writing a story about a haunted house in wartime north Wales. I have the idea for a plot and the characters are slowly morphing into shape in my head; I just need to write it now.
Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Gladly. This is the scene where they try the serum on a vampire and it fails.
"We’ll soon find out Muschi," Rohleder answered him, "the sun’s up.”     He was right. The shadows behind the wall were slowly draining away as the sun’s rays solidly advanced on the test subject. Though still decked in shade, it radiated terror like a lighthouse beacon and despite the fact that it was a vampire, the squad now found a waxing pity for it. Rooted to the spot, it pathetically held up its arms to protect itself from the dazzle.     Reflected off the snow the light was blinding and like a cleansing sword, it swathed its brilliant curtain into the square. With almost a glint it struck the vampire’s head and moved down its face and tunic. They all held their breath as the night was beaten back. No one knew what would happen. Finally, it was completely bathed in the brilliant dawn of the winter daybreak. They still held their breath as it slowly let its arms drop and turned to look at them.Any compassion that they may have felt for it now fell like a cannonball as it turned and, like a gloating python, smiled at them. All inwardly shied away in horror from that reptilian sneer. It looked around to find Rasch and deliberately nodded its head to him.     Von Struck looked on as it opened its arms to greet the now fully formed sun."My God, what have you done Rasch?” Von Struck whispered to himself.     The Doctor was ecstatic. "Look Von Struck. Look at him. I’ve done it, I’ve done..." but his words fell dead in his throat. Von Struck looked at Rasch who had suddenly stopped raving. His face had dropped and he stood there gaping, half-pointing at the Count’s man.     The tunic of the vampire was smouldering, but from the inside. The vampire stood motionless looking at his hands that were turning black and starting to peel. Blisters appeared on its face and it threw back its head to scream. Rasch flinched at the unholy shriek that it let loose. It was the scream of rage and agony, of panic and confusion. Rasch turned white and sprayed vomit onto his highly polished boots. The men lined up against the wall stood numb and silent at the sight of the immolation. Although they were used to death in all its many forms, they were still traumatised by what had happened.     Its once white head was now burnt black and then it burst into flame. It made no sound or movement after the first scream and stood immobile and burning like a Celtic Wickerman. Its eyes burst with an audible pop and slowly it started to crumble and break up. The legs snapped first and as it hit the ground, the charred and still burning head came off. The light given off from the fire was now so intense it was impossible to discern what was burning.Rasch chanted to himself, "Oh my God, oh my God" over and over again.

It was a brilliant plan to win the war.

What if the Third Reich could own the night?

What if they had a Division of Vampires?

And if those Vampires didn't stop?

If they had plans to conquer the whole world?
Even Heinrich Himmler hadn't thought of that. But in Transylvania someone had. And on the Winter Solstice of 1944, the world would be at their mercy.

Interview with Jinni James Author of The Wolf's Maine

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
First of all thank you for having me today. I am a thirty year old wife and mother to two precious girls and one step daughter. I do have a full time job which leaves little time for writing but it is my passion so I fit it in everywhere I can.  Paranormal Romance has always fascinated me.  I love the outrageous, out of this world romance.  How can things like shape shifters, werewolves, and vampires not be entertaining?  I think it is just writing about the fantasy that gets me going.
What inspired you to write this book?
A lot of things inspired me to write this story.  A lot came from real life experience that I embellished to make a better story because come on real life is just not that much fun. *wink*
Please tell us about your latest release.
The Wolfs Maine is a story that had been rolling around in my brain for years but I never could actually get it down on paper.  Like I mentioned before a lot of the story comes from my real life experience.  I was in a bad marriage but once I ventured out I found my true soul mate.  I added in shape shifters and vampires to make the story more fun.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
I had a lot of fun writing from Avalon’s point of view as well as John’s in this book.  I did favor writing Avalon’s more just because she is discovering just who she is.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I have a rough idea of how I want the characters but basically I just let them develop as I write.  They love surprising me.
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
My main character Avalon and I have a lot of the same characteristics.  She doubts herself a lot as I do but she is full of passion like myself as well.  The character Jaci is based on my best friend; they definitely share a lot of the same characteristics like not having a filter from their head to their mouth.  The character Lena is based on another one of my best friends who both are much more down to earth but with fire inside of them.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
I definitely suffer from writer’s block.  I suffered from it for years up until recently. That writer’s block was bad.  I could not think of a thing to write.  Now the doors are opened in my mind to where I can write but I still find those moments where I have no clue what to do next.  When that does happen I walk away from the computer and sleep on it.  That usually works every single time.  After a good night’s sleep I usually know what to write next and it usually hits me on my way to work.
Do you write in different genres?
The Wolfs Maine is a Paranormal Romance but the book I am writing now is a Contemporary Romance. So I plan on writing in different genres of romance.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
Once The Wolfs Maine was finished and published that is when it really hit me.  I am loving it.What are your guilty pleasures in life?
Oh I love this question.  My guilty pleasures are a good romance book, chocolate, coffee, and Greys Anatomy.  I don’t know what I am going to do when that show is no longer on television.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I don’t have much time for anything other than working, kids, and writing but I love to read and spend time with my hubby and my kids.  Shopping!  Does shopping count?
What was the last amazing book you read?
Under the Vampire Moon by Lynsay Sands.  She is definitely one of my favorites.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
This is going to sound cheesy but my favorite spot to read in is my loveseat while my husband is in his chair next to me playing on his computer.  There is just something romantic to me about that, I am not sure why.
What can readers expect next from you?
Right now I am almost finished with my next novel called Business and Pleasure. It is a Contemporary Romance about a successful business woman who finds herself attracted to the man that is trying to buy out her publishing company.  I wanted a story with a successful, powerful, self-sufficient, independent woman who happens to find the one thing she is missing.
Where can readers find you on the web?
www.facebook.com/jinnijameshttp://authorjinnijames.blogspot.com
Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Sure.  Enjoy. J
“My breath stops as he gets closer to me.  Then I see him.  He is even more gorgeous than his picture.  He has such beautiful features, dark as night hair, beautiful green eyes that I could lose myself in, six feet of total perfection standing in front of me in jeans and a black sweater.
“Ava dear. Breathe.”  I let out a long breath that I hadn’t realized I was still holding but yet I still can’t talk.  I am just frozen which wouldn’t be a surprise standing out here but I am not even cold, just a complete statue.
This man in front of me can’t be interested in me, there is just no way.  He could have any beautiful, tall, blonde chick he wanted.  That is the only type of woman that would look right standing next to him.
“Ava. Are you ok?”  I just stare at him but I did manage a “I..uh..I..yes.”  He giggles as he walks up to me and wraps his arms around me for a hug.
“I have been waiting for this moment for so long.  I am so happy you decided to come over.  I hope you do not feel uncomfortable at my home.”
No, I just feel uncomfortable with how beautiful he is.
“Thank you for having me.”
“Ah, she talks!” He lets out a laugh again and I can feel myself manage a smile.”

A True Ghost Story by Sky Purington

(Sky shared this at Roxanne's Realm yesterday and I figured FB readers would love it- we love a good ghost story here don't we? So I had to post here today. Enjoy)
Thanks for having me over, Roxanne. Fabulous blog!
So what inspired me to write my Calum’s Curse Trilogy? Turns out it was my very own haunted Victorian. Along my Bewitching Book Tour I’ve been sharing stories about all the paranormal activity I’ve experienced over the past eleven years. I thought I’d share a few more today.
So are you ready to hear some true ghost stories?
This go around I’ll start with the day we tore a hole in our kitchen wall to put in French doors. All went well during the day. Yes, it was odd seeing a tarp flapping in the wind, dusting my hardwood floors with sawdust and leaves. But it became even odder that evening. Downright supernatural.
(This event was experienced by my husband (skeptic) and mother-in-law, at two separate times during the early morning hours between midnight and four AM) …
The first event happened to my husband who was up late working. He started to hear a rumbling coming from downstairs. Thinking something was wrong he went down only to find the pocket doors shaking in their brackets. Nothing else was shaking so we can nix the Earthquake theory. Shortly thereafter, all the pots and pans in the kitchen rattled for about ten seconds, and then stopped. (Try timing out 10 seconds. It's longer than you might think) He said he got the shivers but shrugged it off.
Hours later, my mother-in-law was sitting on the couch when the pocket doors right behind her started rumbling intensely. That lasted about five seconds. But it was more than enough time for her to turn and watch them, stunned.
One week later, I had my first ‘full body apparition’ experience. While I always believed in the paranormal, this event sealed the deal.
I woke up in the middle of the night with a man standing over my bed. He was whitish blue and dressed in some sort of uniform. He wore a hat that looked to be either a 20’s, maybe 30’s sort of style. I recall thinking… I'm dreaming. Close your eyes, count to five, and then open them, he’ll be gone. So I did.
Damned if he wasn’t still standing there! There’s fear… then there’s fear. I ducked my head and ran from the room. It was ridiculous.
Not sure why I responded that way. Human instinct? Self-preservation? Don’t know. None-the-less, I got as far as the hallway before I said to myself, “Where are you going to go? Spirits are everywhere. Face it.” So I did. I walked right back into my bedroom. The spirit was gone. I don’t think he meant to scare me to begin with. I think he was probably surprised I could see him.
Moving on to the tenant’s experience (They live in a renovated addition to the house that used to be the barn. This is the most violent any spirit has ever become). But I think spirits tend to feed off the high emotional state and energy level of teenagers. In this case it was the tenant’s son and his friend walking through the basement. An object literally flew off the shelf at them. The household also reports disembodied voices and seeing a full bodied apparition walk up their stairs.
I hope you enjoyed hearing a few ghost stories. Be sure to follow me on my Bewitching Book Tour to hear more haunted tales about my Victorian!

Now on Tour The Problem with Power by Agnes Jayne

Since I published my first novel, The Problem with Power, several people have asked me how to write a novel and get it published.  The truth is that I’ve written one book in my life, total. I don’t have any brilliant insights, and I certainly don’t have any real connections that can make anyone else the next great American novelist.  That’s all I can offer is my experience, and whether that’s of any value is up to you.

The first thing to do when writing a novel is to actually sit down and finish the novel.  Seems like a no-brainer, right?  Finishing the novel is a lot harder than it sounds.  For me, it took a little less than a year to complete my book. Some days I found that I could knock out twenty pages in a few hours. Some days I gave up after twenty minutes because I couldn’t justify something as selfish as writing when the house was destroyed, my husband couldn’t remember my name, and my son needed a bath.  Somehow, in the midst of this, I just did it. I finished the book.

Through research and extensive letter writing, I managed to find a small but awesome house that was interested in the book. I also found a lot of other firms that were not interested in the book. I received a total of 60 rejections, and I was just about to scrap the whole project when the editor at Crescent Moon wrote and requested my manuscript. A few weeks later, she came back with a laundry list of changes that she wanted, then asked me to resubmit.  I followed her list to the exact instruction, spent a month rewriting, had the book beta-read (a step I should have done before the initial round of submissions), and sent it back. This time they took it, and they offered me a contract. I took it.

This didn’t mean that the book was done though. The consequence of constantly writing amid severe distractions was that my final product was still needed work. Moreover, it needed flat-out rewriting in several places. I also have a terrible tendency of repeating myself when I write.  That means I often repeat myself when I write.  I spent a lot of time fixing that. The words of my thesis director rang out in my head, and this is perhaps the best advice that I’ve ever gotten in my writing career. He said: “It’s okay to be a shitty writer as long as you’re an excellent rewriter.”

I wasn’t an excellent rewriter either. There are pieces in the finished book that I really wish I’d done differently. The book still contains things like poor word choices, a character who veered left when he should have veered right, and other mistakes that are glaringly obvious to me whenever I pick up the book.  There were little things that slid by both myself and my editor as we together tried to make sense of my book and to correct as many of the mistakes as we could find.

That said, I’m really glad that I finished writing the book. I hope that people enjoy reading it. And I hope that when you’re in the midst of my tale about a kickass woman who is fighting for control of her destiny, you won’t pause at the occasional comma splice 

Guest blog and Giveaway with Kathy Kulig

Demons in Exile. Why are they Exiled?
By Kathy Kulig
Thanks so much for having me as a guest today on your blog. And thanks to the readers for checking out my post.
If you’re not familiar with the series, I thought I’d give you inside scoop of that the demons did that got them in so much trouble. Enough bad stuff to get them exiled between dimensions for eternity.
These are the three books in the series and Book three came out on August 15 at Ellora’s Cave.  http://www.jasminejade.com/p-10267-damned-and-defiant.aspx
Desert of the Damned, Book oneDamned and Desired, Book twoDamned and Defiant, Book three
On planet Prygos two rulers, immortal demons Gwyllain and her husband Cragen do not get along. Gwyllain takes on lovers but fears her husband will discover her betrayal.
She seeks the skills of their top scientist and engineer to design a secret mini alternative world for her. An escape island hidden between dimensions where she can take her lovers, including the engineer Tarik. Tarik creates the artificial world which is about the size of an island and surrounded by a small sea.
But Cragen’s spies discovers the love nest and exposes her. Cragen has his engineers restructure the mini world so that it will become a prison for his wife, her lovers and loyal servants.
This world was designed in such a way that Tarik and Gwyllain can never leave it and must have frequent sex with other drones and transfer their life energy into the world in order to survive. They become conduits of energy the life force that holds the world together. They become so busy collecting this vital energy (having sexual encounters with their drone servants) that they don’t have time to make love with each other. Adequate punishment for an unfaithful wife, Cragen believes. Cragen gets his perverse revenge.
The miniature world of Anartia travels through the universe and has been trapped in a dimension outside of Earth so the demon servants have access to mortal lifeforce energy.
A few mortals are assimilated as drones to do the demoness’s bidding. Dante is one of those drones. He’s a character, a tormented one, in all three books. Part demon, part human and immortal, struggling with doing what’s right, struggling with his own survival, and torn between his world and the woman he loves.
Blurb: Mortal women surrender to Dante’s seductions. He is a Drone, an immortal who feeds off their lifeforce energy—the chi that keeps his kind alive. When his dimension is on the edge of destruction, Dante must seek the help of one special woman.
Haley Moore is a Sha Warrior—a mortal with excess lifeforce energy. She has always had a strong attraction to Dante and when they meet again he thinks luck is on his side because his quota of chi energy would be obtained after one scorching scene with this mortal. But the problem is that he is overwhelmingly attracted to her and once with this woman won’t be enough.
Haley tries to draw out the man buried deep within the demon. Their fierce, undeniable passion unravels his plans and threatens her life. Can Dante bear to abandon her when he leaves Earth forever? Dante will have to choose whether to return to his world or to give up his immortality and share his future with Haley.

Excerpt 2

“More tea girl?” said the Hatter after her own blend of tea had been dispensed over the two men.

“Mmm, yes,” replied Kim, “I’m thirsty again now.”

“How much tea do you think was in the tea pot?” asked the Hatter.

“Too much,” said the hare.

“Too much of a muchness,” said the dormouse.

“Tell me, girl, how much do you think there is in a muchness?” asked the hatter turning to her.

Kim looked bemused.  Was this a trick question?  How was she meant to answer that?  She thought about how much the huge yellow tea pot might hold and blurted out the first figure that came into her head.

“Two pints?”

“Two pints! Oh dear, that’s not right.”

“To be honest, sir, I don’t even know what a muchness is.”

“She doesn’t know what a muchness is?  She’s rather stupid then isn’t she?” said the Hatter.

“Well, I don’t think that’s particularly fair,” Kim protested.

“Ask her some more questions?” said the Hatter.

The dormouse asked one, “Now, there were three sisters who lived in a treacle well.  If Elsie collected 3lbs of treacle, Lacie, 2lbs and Tillie, 5lbs, how much treacle had they got out of the well?”

“Well,” answered Kim, “that would be 10lbs.”

“Wrong!” called the Hatter. “It would all depend on the consistency of the treacle.  Ask another question.”

“What’s two plus three?” asked the hare.

“Well that’s easy,” said Kim, “five.”

“Are you sure?” asked the hare, “be careful what you reply.”

“But, of course it’s five,” said Kim.

“Wrong!” said the Hatter, “it’s seven.”

“No, it’s five,” complained Kim.

The Hatter’s penetrating gaze bore down on her.  Kim had a feeling of foreboding.  Her voice was slow, deliberate and menacing, “It’s whatever I say it is, girl.”

“But that’s not fair,” protested Kim.

“She definitely needs some education,” said the hare.

“You should send her back to school,” the dormouse said.

“Yes, she definitely needs to learn a lesson.”

Interview and Giveaway with E Van Lowe

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write this particular book?
I’ve been writing YA paranormal with a dash of humor for a while now.  But I’ve never written a book that took place in the Hollywood community, where I live and have worked for over 20 years. When I was asked to create a new series, I knew wanted it to take place in Hollywood, or Hollyweird as we sometimes call it.
What is it about the paranormal, in particular zombies , that fascinates you so much?
I don’t know.  I like everything paranormal.  When I wrote Never Slow Dance With A Zombie, I was trying to have my way with the zombie genre.  In this new book, however, zombies are just a part of the paranormal universe.  There are risen dead known as deadies, grave goblins, and necromancers.  Fun!

Please tell us about your latest release.
Kristine Golden is a fifteen year-old with a sworn duty to lay the risen dead back to rest.  And in Hollywood there seems to be quite a few deadiesroaming around.  She agrees to lay a risen fifteen year-old, Marci, back to rest, but Marci won’t go back until a question has been answered.  She wants to know if she was murdered.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
Names kind of come to me.  I start thinking about a new character as if they’re a person and a name eventually pops into my head.  I use the name and if it feels right, I keep it.  Before writing The Zombie Always Knocks Twice I wrote a short story with the same characters, but the love interest’s name was Cesar.  Somehow I knew it wasn’t right.  As I was outlining the book and Alex Romero came to me.  I liked it and so it stayed.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
I can’t say any one character was more challenging, but the cheerleaders were a challenge.  They are four mean girls who appear in most chapters together.  I tried to give them each a voice and attitude that could separate them from one another.  In all honesty, those scenes were very difficult.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
I enjoyed writing Talia, Kris’ boozing, trouble seeking best friend.  I hadn’t written a character like her before, but I’ve known people like her.  Fortunately for me, the kids I knew didn’t get me into the kinds of trouble Talia finds for Kris.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I don’t have a formula.  I have a sense of who a character is in the beginning—their weaknesses and issues, and I let the character develop from there.  In creating Anne Marie, Kris’ sister, I wanted to look at what it might be like being the sibling of a gifted child.  I grew up with a gifted brother.  At times it was hard, he got lots of attention, but I was never jealous of him.  But I thought “What if I was jealous that he was gifted and I wasn’t?”  With this idea in mind I created Anne Marie.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
I really love this book and have quite a few faves.  I love the scene where Kris and Anne Marie are in the car arguing.  That dialogue just spilled out of me.  When I read it back I was surprised at how revealing it was.  I also like the action scene where Kris and Alex are trying to rescue a girl from a zombie and get attacked by something else.  What attacks them?  You’ll have to read the book and find out  ;-)

What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
The Hollyweird series takes place in and around Hollywood.  I have visited night clubs, dive bars, cemeteries, the Walk of Fame and the Hollywood sign for this book.  I have uncovered lots of interesting tid bits about the places I’ve visited along the way.  I love this kind of research.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
The world in the Hollyweird series is very much like our normal world.  But just like our world, when you peel back the onion skin you’ll find some crazy stuff going on.  In my world dead people are walking among the living and we cannot tell them apart.  The only people who can tell them apart are necromancers who are sworn to lay them back to rest.  It’s sort of like The Ghost Whisperer, but instead of ghosts we have deadies walking around.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
That’s a good question, and I’m not sure of the answer.  I haven’t begun writing the second book, yet.  I can tell you with Earth Angel, the second book in The Falling Angels Saga, fans jumping in on book II had no trouble finding their way around.  I hope I can duplicate that in book II of Hollyweird.

Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
I don’t have any rituals that I know if.  One thing, though, is I don’t like writing in the same room all the time.  I spend about fifty percent of my time writing in my office, and the rest of the time I am elsewhere.  Right now I’m in the dining room, which is my favorite place to write.  I like being near the food ;-)

When did you consider yourself a writer?
I started calling myself a writer when I was in grad school.  It took some time for me to believe it.  I’d be at a party and say “I’m a writer.” And the inevitable “Do I know anything you’ve written?” would get asked.  That question kept me from claiming it in public for a long time.  Then one day I said “fuck it.”  The next Time the question was asked I said, “not yet.  But you’ll be hearing from me soon enough.”  And with that, I became a writer.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
I don’t want to sound like a writing cliché but I like to hang out with my friends and drink.  Damn, I guess I am a cliché.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
Family.  I love to work out.  Tennis.  I like to read, and go to the movies, and I LOVE all kinds of music.  Did I already mention drinking?

Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
I like reading in bed, although lately I keep falling asleep.  I guess I’d better find a new reading spot, huh?

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
The man coming up the block toward us in the hooded sweatshirt stopped directly in our path, about ten feet away.  The hood dropped revealing his face.  The hair on the left side of his head had been shaved off revealing tiny bits of bony white scalp.  Huge staples held his crooked jaw in place.  There was a large indentation in his forehead from some sort of blunt force impact.  His left eye was covered with a milky, white cataract, and the right drooped unnaturally into his cheek. My breath caught yet again.  Standing before us was a zombie.‘LEAVE US ALONE!” the zombie screeched.  Then he took off on a dead run and plowed into Alex with the impact a freight train.Just great, I thought.  Hollyweird—where the dead come out to play.  Zombies aren’t what the movies make them out to be—slow moving, brain dead, brain suckers.  They’re the result of a raising gone bad.  They can be strong, and fast, and very dangerous.   Also, a bite from a zombie won’t make you a member of the living dead, although I’m sure it must hurt like hell. The one that plowed into Alex was almost six feet tall and about seventeen years old.  He hit Alex with inhuman force, propelling him backward. They slammed into a parked car that seemed to explode on impact.  The twisting metal and shattering glass sounded like a horrible automobile accident.  The car was totaled, and Alex was embedded into the passenger side, like a toy soldier into a wad of Play Doh.  “Oh, God!” I screamed.  Alex’s eyes were closed.  He wasn’t moving… but the zombie was.  He peeled himself away from Alex and the wreckage.“Zombie!” I called at the top of my lungs.  “I command you to tell me who raised you and what you are doing here.”The zombie faced me, a puzzled look on his distorted face.  It dawned on me he hadn’t known I was a necromancer until then—not that it made a difference.  He wasn’t bound to me so he didn’t have to answer my questions.  I was bluffing.“LEAVE US ALONE!” He screamed in response.  He started for me and a wave of fear rippled my gut.“I command you to stay back!”  I called, but my voice was cracking, my words lacked conviction.  I took a few shaky steps backward.  The zombie continued toward me.Just then the sound of twisting metal snagged both our attention.  Alex’s eyes were open, and he was separating himself from the wreckage.  He shed the automobile with the ease of a snake shedding an old skin.  He began advancing on the zombie.“What’s going on down there?”  We all looked up and saw three men, all Johnny do-gooders, running up the block in our direction.“Leave her alone,” one of them called. The zombie looked from the advancing men to Alex and me.“Hhhhh!”  Hot breath hissed angrily at us.  Then he took off past us like a deer, bounding up the block.  By the time the men reached us he was nowhere in sight.“You ok?” one of them asked.“Yes.  He… attacked us?”“What the heck happened here?” Another of the men asked.  He was staring at the twisted pile of metal that used to be a Buick. Before I could open my mouth, Alex launched into an explanation.  “My girl and I were out for a stroll, and he was taking a sledge hammer to that car when we happened upon him.  Guess it was some kind of vendetta.  And when he saw us he decided to add us to the list.”  The lie flowed from his lips effortlessly.“Hey, aren’t you on that TV show?” the third man asked.Alex smiled.  “The Beloved.  Yes.  You watch it?”  “No, but my girlfriend does.  She can’t get enough of you vampire guys.”Any suspicions the men may have had about our presence on the street or Alex molesting me immediately vanished.  Alex was a bona fide Hollywood star.  I guess they thought all stars were boy scouts.  Where have they been?  Several minutes and three autographs later the men were gone, and Alex and I were walking back to the party.“You told that lie like you do it all the time,” I said.“I’m a dead person among the living.  I do do it all the time.”That wasn’t what I was talking about, but I didn’t push it.  He seemed annoyed.  I guess being attacked by a zombie wasn’t an everyday occurrence for him either.“If it makes you feel any better, I memorized the car’s plate number.  I’ll take care of the damage,” he said, his words softening.  “Thanks.  That does make me feel better.”  I wanted to hold my tongue, but I couldn’t.   “So, you have any enemies who’d want to send a zombie after you?”“I don’t have any enemies.  I’m a lover not a fighter.”  The annoyance was back.“Maybe you loved the wrong woman.”“I’m dead.  I can’t love any woman,” he replied.  The words were seething with anger or pain.  I couldn’t tell which.“He said ‘leave us alone.’  Who’s us?” I asked.“I don’t know!” He was getting agitated again so I dropped the subject.  But not without noting there was more to Alex than he was telling me.   A vindictive zombie had been set loose in Hollywood.  It was something I needed to look into along with the deadie from the diner.  My, my, I was suddenly a very busy girl.

Guest blog and Giveaway with Cornelia Amiri

I have a new series with Ellora’s Cave, called the Dancing Vampires. It’s about the baobhan sith (bah vawn shee). Who are what are the baobhan sith, you ask?
Vampiric fey who roam the Scottish highlands. All of them are women, no men and they have talons, no fangs and like other vampires, they drink human blood and they fry in the sunlight. Many call them dancing vampires as they look for young men coming from the pub at night.
The baobhan sith dance with them until the men are exhausted then they transform their nails to talons and claw at their skin, draining their blood. Two books of my Dancing Vampire series are available now with three more to come. With five quickies in all, I refer to them as 5 Shades of Fey.

The latest, just released in August is Vampire Highland Fling.
Vampire Highland Fling
Cornelia Amiri
Second in the Dancing Vampires series.
Murdina, a dark vampiric fey, hunts the Scottish Highlands for a man, but not for blood—Murdina wants love. She spots Cameron playing the bagpipes, and when a strong wind lifts his kilt, she takes a good look and decides he’s the one.
When Cameron meets a beautiful, mysterious woman who dances the Highland fling for him, his blood boils for her. Soon Murdina and Cameron are doing more than dancing. Wrapped in each other’s arms, they discover true love, but their time together is limited before Murdina’s fey sisters cross the portal to steal her back and probably kill him. Is their love strong enough to overcome the threat her sisters pose to Murdina’s heart and to Cameron’s life?
Excerpt:
A sandy-haired man strutted down the narrow, paved road, one arm wrapped around his bagpipes, the mouthpiece stuffed between his full lips. With his fingers tapping the holes, he played a warm, joyful tune, infusing the air with energy.
Goose bumps broke out on her tingling arms as she drew nearer the stranger. Her gaze fell on the muscular legs beneath his Hayes kilt, a red and green tartan with thin white lines. She swept her gaze to his broad chest, which filled out his black tailored shirt. She appreciated the manly touch of the light bit of fuzz dusting his strong jaw, above his lip and on his firm chin.
The wind stirred and threw his kilt up, exposing a thick bulge. Even flaccid, it appeared long and impressive. She came to a stop and gazed transfixed at his bare cock before the breeze released its hold and dropped the kilt over it.
Her hunt for a man had come to an end already. She just needed to move in and capture her prey. She smoothed the silk skirt of the green dress draping her slender body.
She knew the tune he played, singing out as she stepped close to the road. “Heel for heel and toe for toe, arm in arm and row in row, all for Marie’s wedding.”
She stood in front of him now.
The music stopped. He gaped at her, his mouth wide open.
“Hello.” She forgot mortals were startled when people suddenly appeared before them. She made a mental note to remember that. As she gazed into his gleaming brown eyes, she felt the heat from them on her fey flesh.
His thick brows arched. “I didn’t see you there.”
The music stopped. He gaped at her, his mouth wide open.

Teenage girls don’t fall in love with ghosts, discover their magical powers or save their families from demons, or they?
Book Description:
Forced to leave the few friends she’s ever had and the only life she’s ever known, snarky fifteen-year-old Marissa arrives at Briar Creek, a remote Virginia plantation house, lonely and unhappy. Immediately upon arrival, she learns that her parents have come under the power of the demon that has dwelled there for over a century and that her very life hangs by a thread. With her life in peril, Marissa makes several discoveries that would turn any teenager’s life upside down.
Finding out that the nearby town of Mills Run is inhabited by the souls of her dead relatives who continually try to communicate with her is terrifying. Knowing her parents are under full control of the demon, who unbeknownst to her wants to father a child and rule the world, is even worse. Realizing that she only has Max, her faithful dog for support, Marissa begins to give up all hope.
That’s until she finds the journal of the long dead boy who used to occupy her room. Reading about his life, Marissa begins to fall in love and fantasizes about the seemingly impossible, meeting him. Her impossible dream miraculously comes true when Zachary materializes to save her life and teach her of the powers she never knew she possessed. Allied with her first love, and more powerful than any teenage girl ever dreamed, Marissa gains confidence and believes she can do anything. Together, can this improbable duo save Marissa’s family and the world from the demon before it’s too late?
Author Bio:
I reside in Northern New Jersey.  By day I’m a teacher and family man. At night, the need to write drives me deep into the early hours of the morning. Growing up, my love of history and horror, including Stephen King, greatly shaped my reading and writing interests and style. My debut novel, The Beckoning, is a YA paranormal romance immersed in a historical setting.  In additional to the sequel, I have two other YA novels in the publication queue.
