The Skinny on Fat
“Fat in food does do your body some good. It is a necessary nutrient. Fat provides essential fatty acids, from which your body makes molecules it needs to function properly. It acts as a wall of protection around your vital organs like your heart and kidneys. It also acts as an insulator for the body. Fat carries essential (fat soluble, meaning they dissolve in fat) vitamins A, D, E, and K. These vitamins cannot be absorbed into your body without fat. Although a diet high in fat is unhealthy, fat is the ingredient that makes most foods taste better, because flavor adheres to fat. Fat can offer a concentrated source of energy because fats have a tendency to pack together if they’re not in water so they become a source for greater energy storage. Fat protects your internal organs from going into shock. It insulates the body in extreme temperature conditions. It also acts as an emergency fuel supply in times of illness. Extremely low-fat diets suck the oil right out of your skin. You need a certain amount of fat in your diet for skin to look healthy.”

WHOLE FOODS
Food Combining
We’re sharing Marilu’s simple food combining rules here. Give this a try and see if you don’t have improved digestion, increased energy and an easier time losing those holiday pounds. Commit to a full month of following these rules and then tell us what you think!
1. Do not eat proteins and starches together. Your body requires an alkaline base to digest starches. Proteins and starches combine well with green, leafy vegetables and nonstarchy vegetables, but they do not combine well with each other.
2. Do not mix fruit with proteins, starches, or any kind of vegetable. Fruits digest so quickly that by the time they reach your stomach, they are already partially digested. If they are combined with other foods, they will rot and ferment. Only eat fruit with other fruit.
3. Melons digest faster than any other food. Therefore, you should never eat melons with any other food, including other fruits. Always eat melons on their own.
4. Do not mix acid and/or sub acid fruits with sweet fruits at the same meal. Acid fruits, such as grapefruits, pineapple, and strawberries, can be mixed with sub acid fruits, such as apples, grapes, and peaches, but neither of these categories can be mixed with sweet fruits, such as bananas, dates, or raisins.
5. Eat only four to six different fruits or vegetables at one meal.
6. Fats and oils combine with everything (except fruits) but should be used in limited amounts because while they won’t inhibit digestion, they will slow it down.
7. Wait the following lengths of time between meals that don’t combine:
a. Two hours after eating fruit. b. Three hours after eating starches. c. Four hours after eating proteins. If this seems daunting start with the simplest part of the concept. Eat fruit by itself and keep your protein and starch contained in different meals. In a week or so you can refine it by working on the acid/sub acid fruits and taking a look at how much fat you’re including in your meals.

DAIRY FREE
“I’m always telling people that the only thing milk is supposed to do is turn a fifty-pound calf into a three hundred pound cow in six months. ”
Marilu Henner, Healthy Holidays
Do you need more reason to kick dairy to the curb? Okay. How about this?
Blood is found in nearly all cow’s milk
Infections on a cow’s udders are common, requiring ointments and antibiotics.
Penicillin is commonly found in samples of cow’s milk.
Insulin-like growth factor, (IGF) found in cow’s milk, has been associated with breast, prostate, colon, and lung cancer.
Cow’s milk and dairy products are linked to heart disease.
Bovine growth hormones, or BGH, tend to enlarge a cow’s udders to such and extent that they drag on the ground, leading to mastitis.
The list goes on and on. Join the conversation here at Marilu.com and learn how you can improve your health by eliminating dairy from your diet. http://www.marilu.com/becomemember.php

Red Meat
Still think a little red meat now and then can’t hurt you? Chew on this:
“The concentration of pesticides found in meat is as much as ten times that found in grains, fruits, and vegetables. Chemical and pesticide accumulation in the body is a serious matter. The higher the amount a body consumes and stores, the higher the risk of cancer and liver failure. Cancer growths in animals are much more common than people realize. The butcher cuts them out at the slaughterhouse or supermarket before the meat is sold to the consumer.” Marilu Henner, Healthy Holidays

Step 3: SUGAR
“In countless studies, refined sugar has been blamed for hyperactivity, diabetes, hypoglycemia, severe mood swings, decreased brain function, serious digestive problems, yeast infections, obesity, and tooth decay. It depletes your body of all the B vitamins. It leaches calcium from your hair, bones, blood, and teeth, interferes with absorption of calcium, protein, and other important minerals in the body, and retards the growth of valuable intestinal bacteria. And that not all! Sugar ha a fermenting effect in your stomach. It stops the secretion of gastric juices and inhibits the mouth’s ability to digest.”

STEP 2 Eliminate Caffeine and Nicotine
In our January on line class we’re going through each of the 10 steps of The Total Health Makeover. We’ll be sharing the topics here on the homepage. Today we’re covering one of the most important steps. Eliminating caffeine and nicotine. Some people are able to wean themselves from these and others give them up “cold turkey”. It doesn’t matter if you’re a “turkey” or a “weaner” the important thing is that you take steps. We recognize that these substances are addictive, particularly the nicotine, and that this isn’t an easy step. We urge you to check out some of these websites and to do an internet search yourself to see what you can find that suits your own preferences and will help you quit for good. Involve your doctor in your decision. It will hold you accountable and very often doctors can help their patients with practical steps to help eliminate these health robbers.
