Click here to view the embedded video.

Miller Mosaic Power Marketing is the social media marketing company for the upcoming PTSD Walk Across America — see the walk's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/PTSDWalk

In support of this project, Yael and I will be working with the walk's sponsors to utilize social media to support the walk and the sponsors' businesses.

Dan Stepel, the 47-year-old U.S. Marine veteran who will be doing the actual walking of 12,000 miles through 50 states, needed a brief...

When Is Your Website Not Helping You?

Photo of warning sign

Your website is NOT helping you when it is missing the backend pieces that help the search engines find you.

Let me explain.

I was gratified to receive this email from a book author who doesn't yet have a website:

I typed in "author websites" and your name came up, proving what having a website can do.

We exchanged emails about creating a website and she said she hadn't yet looked around at what other website developers charge.

Here in part is my reply:

I want to warn you that all WordPress...

It's Not Always Easy Making Social Media Clients Happy

Photo of cut outs

Remember Kermit the Frog singing "It's not easy being green"? That's how I felt after spending hours writing an expanded memo to a WordPress website client.

The basic problem stems from the client's desire to have things on the website a certain way regardless of whether those things encourage or discourage people to engage with the content on the site.

(In my world this problem can be restated as: Just because you're a maven in one field does NOT make you a maven in another field.)

One...

Erica Jong's "Fear of Flying" and Social Media

Photo of flying books

In 1973 Erica Jong's novel "Fear of Flying" was published, and in many ways it was a seminal book for the relatively new women's movement.

The book had a profound influence on both many of us who supported the Equal Rights Amendment and, I believe, on the subsequent opening up of opportunities to women despite the failure of the ERA to pass.

Now in 2010 I attended a meeting of a women's professional group and came away from it much discouraged. The irony is that the speaker gave an excellent ...

Changes at LinkedIn May Require Revisiting Your Automatic Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn Feeds

Photo of paper cutouts

As Adam Nash explained in the May 25th LinkedIn blog post, a significant new application has been added to LinkedIn's Twitter integration feature launched November 2009.

The new module – "Connections to Follow" – recommends "new people for you to follow [on Twitter:] based on your LinkedIn connections."

I have now gone to my LinkedIn profile, clicked on the nav button "More," then clicked on "Applications Directory" and clicked on "Tweets" to add that application to my profile.

(And what I...

What NOT to Do When Your Company Is Hit With a PR Crisis

Photo of man holding up a question mark sign

Without mentioning any names I'm going to recount a story of closed mindedness on the part of a large company.

The company has been hit by some unfortunate rumors. Whether true or false is not the question for this blog post.

In the course of this situation I had occasion to request a phone conversation to discuss an innovative social media strategy that Miller Mosaic Power Marketing could implement with the company's staff.

The response I received back was downright rude and boiled down to ...

Procrastinating on Effectively Using Social Media Can Land You in Hot Water

Picture of woman with tangled knitting

Life used to be so much easier when all a company needed was a static website that, if the company were local, gave the location and hours and, if the company were national or international, sold products on the site or gave an info@companyURL email address.

That life is GONE – GONE FOREVER. And while it may be comforting to hold out as long as possible before embracing the new world of social media, you may be putting your company at risk by procrastinating on accepting the new world.

Let's ...
