Book Review: In the Shadow of Blackbirds
In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat WintersMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
A cool and interesting YA set during WWI and the flu epidemic of 1918. I enjoyed this book very much. First off, it's different. The setting is cool and unusual. The fear and intensity of the flu epidemic domestically while the War was raging on foreign fronts was very well done. Winters captures the rage of patriotism and the climate of fear. The heroine is smart, capable and interesting. It's a ghost story, predominantly, and Winters handles the spiritualism aspect of the story (photographers capitalizing on the many dead in the War, and the rage for spirit photographs)excellently. There were some genuinely creepy moments in the book, and I thought the romance (with a possible ghost) was well handled and full of peril. While the villains in the tale were not difficult to uncover, the book is intriguing and perfectly atmospheric, and well worth reading.

Kindle Daily Deal: Germany
Today, Bone River is the Kindle Daily deal in Germany. Here's the link: Bone River. In the meantime, break is over, Easter and Passover are past, and I am hard at work editing the new manuscript. Wish me luck!

Literary Lions Gala
Seattle's The Met Pages now has posted their photos of the King County Library System Foundation's Literary Lions gala. You can head on over there to check out all of the authors who attended, but here are a couple of photos:

A fun time was had by all. Well, at least Kristin and I had a fun time.
Now back to cooking for Passover and cleaning and cooking for Easter--time for my annual spring duo-religion mashup.

Mood: Disappointed
Just as an appendix to the previous post: I am NOT disappointed in The Fault in Our Stars, not the least bit. I am disappointed because the new manuscript needs MORE editing. Sigh. So my break is cut just a bit short so I can dive back in. Ah well, that is the problem with being a writer: everyone else also has an opinion. :)
