Book Review: Days of Blood and Starlight
Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini TaylorMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Amazing. Even better than the first one, and I LOVED "Daughter of Smoke and Bone." Beautifully written, different than anything else out there, inventive, intensely emotional and just COOL! The characterizations are excellent--even with those characters who only make a brief appearance on stage--and Laini Taylor managed to rip my heart out over and over again. This young adult series is seriously good. Read it.

Bone River Editors' Choice
And in the "there can never be enough good news" category: Historical Novels Reviews has picked Bone River as an Editors' Choice!
The review calls it a "beautifully written, lyrical literary novel," and also says "[Chance] keeps the reader just ahead of Leonie's perception of the truth, leading up to a page-turning finish. Recommended."

It's Done!!! Sort of. Temporarily.
And a round of applause please ...
Draft four of the new manuscript is finished. Tonight it goes to my critique partner. After which, it will strangely and hideously morph into ... Draft 5. But I have a few days before that happens, so I am taking a bit of a break to get to things I have left languishing for too long. Like having the brakes checked and the oil changed and grocery shopping. You know, boring stuff that has to be done.
I've got a fun bit of news to announce here in the next day or so (you know, since I'm doing all these boring errands, I probably won't be spending much time at the computer--but the next time I do ... yeah, I'll post it). :)
So ... watch this space.
Now I'm off to read something fun.
(and I think ebullient should be a mood on Livejournal, because that is how I'm feeling right now)

Event news
On March 23rd, I'll be signing and talking about Bone River at the King County Library System's fundraising gala, Literary Lions. I'll be there with a slew of other authors, all of whom will have their books available as well. This is a fun event, and a chance to hobnob with the famous and not-so-famous.

Seattle Times reviews Bone River
The Seattle Times reviewed Bone River this morning--a nice review, saying "The characters are richly ambiguous. Nobody's perfect; all their shortcomings are interesting, and nobody emerges unscathed or unchanged by the journey through this story."
Pretty cool! The review is here for anyone who wants to take a look!

Book Review: Code Name Verity
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
An interesting book. It had a bit of a slow start--which seems strange to say, given that it begins with torture in a Gestapo prison--and it moves somewhat at a deliberate pace. But I found myself thinking about it when I wasn't reading it, and when I finished it, I dreamed about it all night. Essentially it's the story told by a Scottish female special operations agent (WWII) to her German captors. She is collaborating with them, and it isn't until sometime later that you begin to realize exactly what is going on. Clever and twisty, with a lot of great detail on the time period. It forces the reader to ask some hard questions, like: how well would I stand up to this kind of torture? Who would I be if I were captured by the enemy? Would I resist or give in?
Strangely, I did not find myself deeply, emotionally connected to the characters, and I'm not certain why, because the book is about friendships and commitment, courage and the lack of it, and it should have slayed me. But it didn't, which is why I've given it a four. Still, a really really good read, and recommended.
