In the Shadow of Blackbirds by
Cat WintersMy rating:
4 of 5 starsA cool and interesting YA set during WWI and the flu epidemic of 1918. I enjoyed this book very much. First off, it's different. The setting is cool and unusual. The fear and intensity of the flu epidemic domestically while the War was raging on foreign fronts was very well done. Winters captures the rage of patriotism and the climate of fear. The heroine is smart, capable and interesting. It's a ghost story, predominantly, and Winters handles the spiritualism aspect of the story (photographers capitalizing on the many dead in the War, and the rage for spirit photographs)excellently. There were some genuinely creepy moments in the book, and I thought the romance (with a possible ghost) was well handled and full of peril. While the villains in the tale were not difficult to uncover, the book is intriguing and perfectly atmospheric, and well worth reading.
