State Fair!!

I took yesterday off to go to the fair with my daughter (sort of a last fling before college), and some other members of my family, including my mother. Because my mother was raised on a farm in Ohio, fairs have never meant to me what I think they mean to other people. That is ... rides. I've never really cottoned to the whole ride-something-that-turns-you-upside-down-and-makes-you-sick-enough-to-vomit thing. Part of it is that I have always suffered from really intense motion sickness. I mean, skiing is hard for me. So I was always glad that my younger sisters' begging to go on rides was met with deaf ears.

No, for me, a fair means going to the livestock barns, checking out the grange exhibits, marveling at the giant pumpkins, and trying not to feel guilty for gorging on fair food. This year's fair intake consisted of: scones, giant smoked turkey legs, deep fried mushroom, sweet potato fries, chocolate ice cream, funnel cakes, kettle corn, salted roasted cashews and cotton candy. And if I hadn't felt like I might explode at any second, fudge would have been on the menu as well.

Here are some pictures from this year's excursion:

And in the category of: I cannot even hope to explain this:

All in all, a pretty good day off!

Book Review: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (Between, #1) Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book--I think it's one of my favorite of the year. Atmospheric, very well written, with some of the most complex characters I've seen in young adult fiction is some time. Richly imagined, a little bit creepy, and a genuinely cool idea. Highly recommended.

Everybody loves Brunch!

This week, Kristin Hannah and I hosted a brunch for some of the wonderful women authors from Seattle7Writers. It was a beautiful day, and we had a great time. Here are some of the pix from the event, from the food:

Ridiculously Lazy

This is some of I've been reading the last few weeks. The interesting thing about this is that I have finished all of these books, and you will note that they are still cluttering my coffee table because I am seriously JUST THAT LAZY, and have not got around to shelving them. I sit down every night and move things out of the way so I can put both my feet and my drink on the table. This requires some heavy reshuffling, and yet, even though the bookshelf sits (literally) TWO feet away, I cannot be bothered to actually put them there. Not only that, but I am taking the time to write a blog post about it rather than using that time to get them out of my way.

Maybe later.

Sometimes I wonder about myself.

Reading

I've reviewed some of these books over on Goodreads and in previous posts, in case you're interested. I haven't got around to reviewing all of them yet.

Now I'm off to work on the edits for the first book of the young adult trilogy, which, just to remind you, will be out this spring.

Still not putting the books away.
