NEW RELEASE! Breaking Point: A SEAL Team Heartbreakers Novella & More News

First of all I want to thank everyone who signed up for my newsletter during the Mega author giveaway we ran last month. I only send out my newsletter when I have important news, three or four times a year,  when I have a new book being released or one going on sale. So you don't have to worry that I'll bombard you with newsletters.

BIG NEWS!!!!
I'm so excited!!! Can you hear the SQEEEE? The 8th installment of my SEAL TEAM Heartbreaker Series, BREAKING POINT will be released March 15th. I'm really pleased with the novella. It's Trish and Langley's story. They've been in every book of the series. Their home is the meeting place for the team during important moments. And Trish is the leader of the ladies. She acts as a mentor to the new military wives and girlfriends, offers them the hand of friendship and also organizes help when there's an emergency. And now it's her turn to have something major happen in her life and her marriage.

The Blurb:
After fifteen years of marriage, Trish Marks has hit her breaking point. Her social work caseload has doubled, her son is acting out, and her SEAL husband is never home.   Something has to give. When she’s shot and nearly killed by an irate husband during a home check, it does.
Navy SEAL Senior Chief Petty Officer Langley Marks is five years away from retirement and his pension. He knows there’s trouble in his marriage when he returns home from a deployment to a wife who’s distant, overworked, stressed, and unhappy. He’s only seen her like this once before, when she nearly died after giving birth to their last child. When she’s shot, he re-lives that terrible experience, and feels just as helpless.
But he’s not about to fly away and leave her to fight her way back alone this time. He’s willing to sacrifice it all to prove to her she’s the most important thing in his life. He just has to find a way to make her believe it.

HERE'S A SHORT EXCERPT:
Tad ran around the side of the house, soaking wet, his pale blond hair sticking up on top of his head like spikes. Trish laughed and tugged him between her legs. She stripped him, bundled his sopping clothing onto the table next to her, and grabbed a beach towel from the railing of the deck to dry him off.“Go into your room and put on dry underwear and your Spiderman sweatpants. Daddy’s in there, so he can help you if you need it. You can take a bath in a little while.”He used his favorite phrase, “I can do it myself,” before he took off running toward the back door. His narrow, bare behind, a hand’s-width across, glowed white compared to the light tan darkening his back and lower legs. He was going to be lean and tall like his father. She could already see the similarities in his bone structure. She hung his discarded clothes across the deck railing to dry.Langley slipped out the door ten minutes later. “He’s sitting in front of the television watching a Spiderman cartoon in his Spidey pants, and I suspect he’ll probably crash soon. I took them to a taco place. You know the one that has the bite-sized tacos? Anna loved them.“In fact, I brought you some. No sauce, so it won’t bother the baby.” He went back out to the car, brought in a bag, and set it on the table next to her.He paused a moment. “We got you something at the beach today.”“What is it?”He drew a small bouquet of cornhusk roses from behind his back, each flower tipped along its edges very lightly with color. “A girl was making these on the beach. Tad said the blue one was from him and Anna picked the peach one. I chose a yellow one for Jessica, and a red one from me.”Tears pricked Trish’s eyes as she took them. “They’re beautiful. Thank you, Langley.”“You’re welcome, sweetheart.” He leaned down and brushed her lips with his own.She looped an arm around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder. He knelt to nestle between her legs and hold her.“What is it?”“I can’t seem to get my feet under me this time, Langley.”“You had a bad time of it, honey. The doc said you’d have to take things slow for a while.”She nodded against his shoulder and breathed in the briny scent of the sea, laundry soap, and Langley, while she fought against the pain. She knew her husband. Knew his tells. He was taking the kids, spending one-on-one time with them. Going out of his way to be useful. Not that he didn’t do that a lot when he was here, but he’d been particularly attentive the last few days.“I think we all need a nap,” he suggested. She nodded again. He stood and backed away, holding his hand out to help her push up from the chair.“I’ll get the baby. You go ahead and lie down for a while.”She gathered the roses and held them against her chest. “When do you leave?”His features blanked in surprise, but his green gaze remained focused on the baby. “Tomorrow.”The shock of it struck her silent. She wished him already gone. Dealing with his leaving was harder than his absence. And she couldn’t say a damn thing. It was against the military wife code to say anything, in case something happened to him while he was gone. She didn’t want to live with that guilt. Didn’t want him carrying it into battle.

My next big project will be my next full-length SEAL TEAM Heartbreakers book BREAKING HEARTS . It will be Bowie's book and I have a lot of things planned for him. He's the heartbreaker of the team. The 1880's cattle country heats up when Trey and Rose unite to thwart her brother's scheme and save their land. In tough, protective Trey, Rose at last finds a man deserving of her trust. In Rose, Trey discovers a spirited woman with a heart as big as Texas. Can they heal old wounds and give in to the love both need... or will desire turn to dust when past betrayals are destined to repeat with a vengeance?

HERE'S THE AMAZON LINK:  MY WILD TEXAS ROSE
And in case you missed her first book...  ANGEL IN THE RAIN

 HERE'S THE BLURB:
After two years of finishing school, Angel Clayton is determined to redeem herself and become a lady like the mother she never knew. But her wild Texas legacy returns to haunt her when she finds herself the unwilling pawn in a battle of wills between her father's enemy and a sexy pistolero whose reputation makes hers look positively angelic.

Rane Mantorres is a gunfighter with a big reputation and an even bigger score to settle. When he learns his enemy plans to kidnap a wealthy rancher's daughter, he foils the plot and kidnaps her himself. Now he must dare far more than he bargained as he's caught between his thirst for justice and a burning desire for his spirited hostage. Will he risk all--his revenge, even his life--for one night of unforgettable passion with an angel in the rain.

HERE'S AN EXCERPT:

“Where are you going, Angel?”
He spoke softly, as he might to a child who’d accidentally picked up a loaded gun.
“Home,” she replied with conviction. “I’m going home, Rane.”
His gaze lifted, and the hard as flint expression she had come to recognize settled in his eyes. “I can’t let you do that.”
Angel tried hard to mask the dread surging through her. “You can’t stop me this time.”
Again, his dark eyes flickered over the Colt in her hand. “Do you intend to shoot me? If so, it might be easier if you cock the gun.”
Was he daring her? Or trying to distract her? Perhaps both. Her pounding heart sped even more and echoed in her ears. Did she dare call his bluff?
Deliberately, she lifted her other trembling hand to the wooden butt to steady it. She moved her thumb over the hammer and slowly levered it back. One click. Two. It seemed a long way, but it only brought the gun to half cock.
Ticklish sweat seeped between her breasts. Her hands felt wet, slippery. She exerted more pressure, hoping, praying her thumb didn’t slip off the oily mechanism and let it discharge.
Another sickening double click and the gun was fully cocked.
Call and raise, Rane.
With grim satisfaction, she watched him, gauging his reaction. The maddening smirk was still on his lips. He took a step forward.
Rather than retreat, she lifted the gun higher and locked her elbows. “Stay back or, I swear, I’ll shoot.”
He shook his head as he dared another step. “No. I don’t think you will. If you wanted me dead, I wouldn’t be standing here now.”
“I started to leave you that first night.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
Because she was afraid he would die. Because she couldn’t bear the thought of him lying there, suffering and alone. Because she simply couldn’t bring herself to leave him...
“I stayed with you. Took care of you. You owe it to me to let me go.”
He canted his head, as if considering her words. “I thought you understood. There are men out there looking for you. Hard men. Men without conscience, who simply take what they want. You’re asking me to throw you to the wolves.”
“I can make it through.”
“No. When we leave here, we go together.”
He moved toward her again, another slow, measured step. She whimpered, knowing he wouldn’t stop. He would never stop, not until he accomplished what he’d set out to do. Or until he was dead.
Her finger twitched against the trigger. The instinctive reaction frightened her so badly sick panic flooded her stomach. She wanted to drop the gun, but couldn’t force herself to release her death grip on the accursed thing.
He stood right in front of her, so close the end of the gun barrel prodded the center of his chest. She stared at the blackened hole and the long-dried blood on his soiled shirt. The thought of inflicting yet another, even more serious, wound on his beautiful body nearly buckled her knees.
“Please,” she whispered. Only now she didn’t know which she pleaded for, him to let her go, or for him to stop scaring her to death with his own mad disregard for the weapon in her hands.
The hardness still glittered in his eyes. “It’s your play, Angel. Either give over, or shoot. I’m not stepping aside.”

NEW RELEASE for preorder BREAKING POINT & Another Excerpt

Breaking Point is the 8th installment to my SEAL Team Heartbreaker Series. There are 6 full-length books and 2 novellas. There will only be 2 more full length books to this series. Breaking Hearts (Bowie's Story) and Breaking Chains (Derrick Armstrong's Story). Since something Derrick was involved with started the series, I have to give him his own story to end it.  Then I'll be moving on to the Building Series. I'll talk more about that in a later post. Much later.  But I'll keep everyone updated.

Breaking Point is a 38,000 word novella. Trish and Langley's story. It's a story of a marriage and everything it takes to be married to a warrior. I fell in love with Langley while I wrote this. I hope you do too.

Here's the blurb:
 Release date March 15th

After fifteen years of marriage, Trish Marks has hit her breaking point. Her social work caseload has doubled, her son is acting out, and her SEAL husband is never home.   Something has to give. When she’s shot and nearly killed by an irate husband during a home check, it does.
Navy SEAL Senior Chief Petty Officer Langley Marks is five years away from retirement and his pension. An Excerpt:
Trish’s arms tightened around him again. “You’re a good man, Langley.”  He was silent for a long moment. “One of the Al Qaeda bastards abused her. She gave up his name right away. I think that’s why she wanted to die. The baby was only about three months old. She’d given birth to her alone. And this asshole comes into her home and…” His throat worked again. “I made sure his name was on the hit list of bad guys before I left. If our guys don’t get him, theirs will, maybe. Hopefully the bastard’s already dead, since he never came back.” “You did all you could, Langley. More than her own people or neighbors did.”“It’s damn near impossible to figure out who the bad guys are over there, Trish. Some of them would sell their kids to the highest bidder to survive, while others will stay in the trenches and starve with them. We try to build a relationship with them through kindness, and they’re murdered for having contact with us, or turned in by their own neighbors. It’s a no-win for everyone.”Trish cupped his cheek and looped a leg over his. “There’s nothing you can do about it. And you’re home. Try to lay it down.” He turned on his side, making the hammock swing wildly, and snuggled her body into his. “You’re right.” His mouth touched hers in the softest of kisses. “I’m home. I’m grateful to be here with you.” That’s the way it always worked. He told her some non-secret something that was weighing on him, and he turned to her for comfort. How much more did the secret stuff hurt him? How did the other guys deal with all this without a sounding board and a pair of loving arms to hold and comfort them? She smoothed his hair back from his forehead. “I’m grateful you’re who you are, Langley.” She tugged up his T-shirt and then her own, so their skin could touch. He unclasped her bra and cupped her breast, then plucked at the nipple, toying with it until it beaded. Sensitive sparks trailed downward to the most intimate part of her body, and she rocked in against him, setting the hammock to swinging again.  “You know we can’t make love in a hammock. I’m a SEAL, not an acrobat.”She chuckled. “I thought we could do some heavy petting, then wander in and make love.” She unzipped his khaki shorts and caressed the length of his erection through his briefs while she nuzzled his neck. “Good thing I’m a sailor and don’t get seasick.” He kissed her again.     She could tell he was lighter for having shared, but it wasn’t the thing that was bothering him most.  It was probably something he’d never be able to share. She couldn’t do anything about that but love him. Links:http://amzn.to/2jt4e0E http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/break...

An excerpt:
The house was silent. He wandered through the kitchen into the living room. The hall was dark, and all the bedroom doors were closed.
He stopped at Jessica’s room and eased the door open. She lay curled on her bed, her dark hair mussed, and her eyes were red and swollen. He bypassed Tad’s door. He’d save the confrontation with his son for later. In the master bedroom, Trish had several piles of clothing on the floor. She was cleaning out the closet. As soon as he made sure seeing none of his stuff lay in a pile, he breathed a sigh relief. For a minute he thought that she might be tossing him out. “Anna said there was an issue this morning with Tad.”“He slammed Jessica’s camera onto the floor as hard as he could and broke it. She took a picture of him after he got out of the shower dressed in a towel, and he was enraged.” She ran her fingers through her short cap of hair. He liked the new cut. It left her slender neck bare, and every time she turned her back, he wanted to press a kiss to that vulnerable, tender spot at her nape.  “Jess cried herself to sleep. And he’s not the least bit sorry.”“I’ll go in and talk to him.”“I’ve never seen him like this, Langley. He’s short-tempered, surly, and the way he broke the camera, it was violent.” He read worry and hurt in her expression.Langley reached for her, and she came into his arms. She laid her head against his shoulder like she was exhausted. “There’s something going on with him, Langley.”He debated whether or not to pile more on, or just offer comfort. But if they didn’t face what was going on between them… “There’s something going on with us, and he knows it. Talk to me, Trish.” She went completely still against him. “It won’t do either of us any good to say the words out loud. Because there’s nothing either of us can do or say to change things.”“Venting might help you.”“We’ll just come right back to where we are, because there’s no way of changing things. We’re both locked into our paychecks, and we have to have the money.”Shocked, he was silent for a long moment. “You want to quit your job?” “Yes, I do.  They’ve doubled our caseloads, and I can barely breathe at work. The girls are good, but I can’t give enough attention to Tad. He clearly resents me, and I don’t understand why.”“It isn’t you he resents, Trish. It’s me. I just got back three weeks ago, and I’m already back to work. You’re just an easier target because you’re here and I’m not.”She leaned back to look up at him. “What do you plan to do about that?” “The only thing I can. Talk to him.”  He’d never laid a hand on any of his kids but… “Unless you’d rather I spank his ass for breaking the camera.” Her eyes widened at the suggestion. “No. Of course not. I’ve already worked out a punishment. He has to work off the cost of another camera, and he can’t have his X-box controls back until he does.”He pushed a little. “It isn’t just the kids, is it?” “No. It’s—everything, Langley. I’m tired of dealing with everything alone.” She flinched and closed her eyes. “I know that doesn’t sound like a SEAL’s good little wife, but Tad is wearing me down. Short of locking him in his room and sliding his food under the door, I don’t know what else to do.”“I’ll talk to him. See if I can’t encourage an attitude adjustment.”“Thank you. I have to go to work.” She pulled away and grabbed her purse. This wedge between them refused to budge. “I love you, Trish. I know some of the guys I’ve been teamed with in the past weren’t always faithful, but I’ve never strayed. You’re the only woman I want. I don’t want to lose you.” “I don’t want us to lose each other, Langley. But I can’t be three-quarters of a whole anymore.”Ouch, that hurt, more than a little.“You have to find a way to pull your weight with your son. I can’t do it alone anymore.” He followed her through the house to the front door while she collected her daily planner from the small office at the front of the house. She turned at the front door to look back at him. “How long are you going to have to work weekends?” he asked. “I don’t know. I wish I could say this wasn’t the new norm, but working five days a week just doesn’t cut it. I have to do four home visits today, because it’s the only time the parents are home for me to speak to them.” He nodded. “Be careful, Trish.”“I will.” She picked up a sweater draped over the back of the couch and slipped it on. He caught her arm when she started out the door. There had to be some physical contact between them. It was all he had right now. “I like the new haircut. It leaves that sweet spot right back here free.” He brushed his fingertips down her neck. “I want to kiss you there every time I’m behind you.” He bent his head and demonstrated, taking his time, and was rewarded when she shivered. She turned to look over her shoulder at him, her pale blue eyes, scanning his face.  “Talk to Tad and see if you can make some headway with him.” She gripped his chin, rose on tiptoe and kissed him. “I may ask you do that again tonight.”He grinned and caught back a sigh of relief. At least she was still open to his sexual overtures. But then they’d always had a strong physical connection. When he was home. “I’m on it. I promise.”She nodded, opened the door and strode down the front steps. Once behind the wheel, and noticing him still standing at the door watching her, she threw up a hand in a small wave. He closed the door. It was time to deal with Tad. Right now. And if it took lighting up his son’s ass, he’d do it. He wouldn’t like it, but he’d do it.

When he tries to save a troubled teammate’s career, he unwittingly puts Zoe’s life in danger. Can he lead the rest of the team in a rescue operation to save her? Or will one of Hawk's brothers in arms destroy the woman he loves?

If you're interested in humorous Paranormal Romance I have a Novella in Robyn Peterman's Magic and Mayhem series. Another will be coming in June for the same series. So in a sense I'm writing a series within a series.  Have Wand, Will Travel is a detective agency. They have agents of multi-abilities and species. Each of my characters gets to stretch their paranormal muscle in a humorous way. The next book of the series will be Have Wand, Will Travel: Once Bitten, Twice Shy.

Here's the blurb and the link:

A soul-sucking wand, a witch, a vampire and a hellhound.  ‘Nuff said.
Private detective and gifted witch Zaira O’Shea has built her reputation on her ability to always find her relic, magical device, or man. When the Witches’ Council hires her to find and return a stolen wand, she can’t refuse, and she’s eager to recover the device. Until the clues lead her to a vampire with fallen-angel good looks, and talents that don’t require a bite to lead her into temptation.History professor and vampire Christophe Bakas has brushed off his cat burglar skills to steal a powerful wand for the Vampire Council, but only because they are holding his uncle hostage. When he meets Zaira, he hopes he’s found someone who’ll help with the rescue. But from their first teleportation he’s hooked on more than her flying skills.
The more they learn about the wand, the more Chris and Zaira believe neither council can be trusted with the dangerous device. With both councils closing in, they’re forced to go on the run. Only the vacationing Baba Yaga can make sure the wand isn’t used to destroy the careful balance between witch and vampire kind. If they can find her.

Assjacket, West Virginia here they come.

Emotional Connections to Writing Military Romance

Writers live in a bubble created by our imaginations. We live with our characters in that bubble as well. We breath life into them and give them memories, families, backgrounds, experiences and before the book is completed, they have become real to us because we've experienced their emotions while we're writing them. We've asked them questions and waited for their answers.

With everything they've experienced we've drawn from our experiences to give them life. Drawn from our own emotions too.

When I first started writing my SEAL Team Heartbreakers Series I had an immediate emotional connection to the books because of my father's military service in the Marine Corps. My father had gone in at the tender age of seventeen during WWII. His mother signed the paperwork for him to go. In fact, all but two of my father's siblings went into some branch of the service at that time. The two youngest were too young to serve. My father at seventeen was on Iwo Gima when they raised the flag.

He got out for a short time after WWII but went back in. He did two tours of duty in Korea. He met my mother in the middle of that conflict and married her. She was eighteen.

We were stationed in Millington Tennessee when he got his orders to go to Vietnam. I was twelve when he returned from a three year deployment to Viet Nam and retired as a 1st Sergeant after twenty-four years. And yes you read that right. He was gone for three years, coming home for Christmas once somewhere in the middle of that long deployment.

During that time, we moved back to our hometown in Kentucky because my grandfather was very ill with lung cancer and my grandmother needed help. He died before Daddy returned.

Daddy's return was an adjustment for us all, but especially him. He loved the Corps. Semper Fi was his motto and the Corps was in his blood, but there was a lot of emotional fall out from Viet Nam in our country. Only later, after the anger and grief had calmed, would the fallout for our troops be recognized. They were held accountable for the loss of every battle and every life, instead of the powers that be that pulled the strings, and every service man felt that heavy burden dumped on their shoulders after they'd risked their lives.

As a military family we got to experience up close how his deployment there had affected my father. When he deployed he weighed around a hundred and sixty-five pounds. He weighed a hundred and thirty when he got home. His faith and pride in the Corps were still there, but other beliefs had been shaken.

I didn't realize until later how much strength and courage it took for him to walk away from something he loved so much and for him to rebuild a different life afterwards. He got a job as a maintenance man fixing machinery at the University of Kentucky while he worked toward a degree there in Architectural Drafting. He went on to work another 25 years in that field for US Steel and Arch Mineral. Climbing the mountains of Southeastern Kentucky doing surveys for them in later years, I know he found some peace. He was always laughing and talking. We joked that he'd talk to a lamp post if it could talk back.

It was only in later years he made just a few comments about some of his experiences at war. After going to the movies and seeing Saving Private Ryan he made the comment that Spielburg had done a good job depicting how the landing on Omaha Beach was at the beginning of the movie. He said it had been just like that...only worse.

Knowing my seventeen year old father had been through that...Seen the carnage, and loss of life... I can't watch that movie even now. But my heart bled for him. And I understood how strong a boy he was to have survived and how much stronger a man he had become because of his experiences.

I've poured so many of my memories of the corps and our lives during his service into my first SEAL Team Heartbreakers book especially but in every book since as well. The struggle for our service men and women to balance their calling, their duty to serve their country, with their love and loyalty to their families is as heart wrenching for me to write today as it was for me to experience then. There are times tears stream down my face as I write because I know what it feels like to watch someone you love board a plane and live with the uncertainty of whether they will return to you whole, or alive.

I remember that last deployment to Viet Nam when we took my father to the airport so he could catch his plane back to San Diego. This was back when you walked out to the plane and climbed the stairs to board. He had held us each and told us he loved us. We watched from the gate as he boarded the plane. At the top of the stairs, he turned to look back one last time and raised a hand to wave. His cheeks were wet with tears. As were ours.

All this has come back to me while I write the next SEAL Team Heartbreakers novella. Breaking Point. I thought it would be a full length book but my emotional involvement with these characters and the subject I'm dealing with has made me realize that a novella is all that's needed. It will be out early next year.

Here's a very-very rough draft of the blurb, due to change once the novella is finished:

After fifteen years of marriage Trish Marks has hit her breaking point. Her caseload as a social worker has doubled, her son is acting out, and her husband is never home. Something has to give. When she’s shot by an irate husband during a home check, it does.
Navy SEAL Petty Officer Langley Marks is five years away from retirement and his pension. He knows there’s trouble in his marriage when he returns home from a deployment to a wife who’s, distant, overworked, stressed and unhappy. He’s only seen her like this once before after she nearly died giving birth to their last child. When she’s shot he relives that experience all over again and feels just as helpless.

But he’s not flying away and leaving her to fight her way back alone this time. He’s willing to sacrifice it all to prove to her she’s the most important thing in his life. He just has to find a way to make her believe it.
I'm sharing the cover here as well:

I have to plug the rest of my books. You know I do. So if you're interested in highly emotional military romantic suspense here are the links to the entire series and short blurbs for each one.

Building Ties On SALE for $.99 (And An Excerpt)

I've put Building Ties (Book 4 of the SEAL Team Heartbreakers Series) on sale until the 17th of December.  The book has a 4.8 rating out of 5. So if you like Hot SEALs and Hot Romance... I'd love it if you'd check it out.

Navy SEAL Brett 'Cutter' Weaver is on a mission to Nicaragua when he learns his bride-to-be, Tess Kelly, has been injured in a car bombing. At Homeland Security’s demand, he’s rushed home on the next available transport and arrives to find Tess embroiled in three controversial stories. One may offer the key to her attacker.
On top of the emotional and physical upheaval of the bombing, Tess has been offered the journalistic opportunity of a lifetime at the Washington Post. If she accepts the job, she and Brett face living on opposite sides of the country. With their wedding two weeks away, she has temptations to face and tough decisions to make.
Serving as her security detail, Brett sees Tess’s remarkable investigative reporting skills in action, and acts as her sounding board and partner. He’s willing to sacrifice to ensure her happiness, but more, he wants to keep her safe. Because there’s a killer stalking her, and one interview at a time, they mean to catch him.
An Excerpt:
After eating a quick meal of beef stir fry and rice, Brett stripped off his uniform and stretched out on Tess’s bed in his boxer briefs. While he watched her undress, he realized, out of all the things he missed when he was gone, it was the small things she did he missed the most. The way she laughed at his corny jokes. The way she moved, the sound of her voice, the way she slept curled against him, the way she would run her fingernails down his ribs to tickle him.Tess pulled loose the scrunchie she’d used to confine her hair while cooking. The dark auburn strands had grown since his deployment and now fell down her back. A quick grimace of pain flitted across her features, her normal graceful movements disrupted.Every time she hesitated while doing something, every time she flinched, the anger trapped beneath his breastbone flared hotter. He would find the bastard responsible for hurting her. He wouldn’t kill him, though he wanted to. But he planned to seriouslyfuck him up.“Did you call your mom and let her know you’re home?” Tess asked from behind the closet door. From a glimpse of her movements, he guessed she was slipping out of her dress and putting on something else to lie down in. Was she hiding her bruises from him? The anger tripped over into rage. She glanced around the edge of the door, and he homed in on her face. The falling sensation hit the pit of his stomach, similar to when Harding notified him about the car blowing up. If something happened to her, he’d go crazy. God, he loved her so much. “I called Mom while I was on the plane and told her we’d see her tomorrow. I knew HQ would want to debrief me before I could talk to you or anyone else. Then Homeland and the FBI met me at the base.”“So you got a triple dose. Poor baby.” She flipped her hair over her shoulder. “They asked me the same questions, a hundred different ways. It was a complete waste of time.”At least he’d been able to write his report about the mission enroute and submit it before they landed. He ran a hand over his eyes. He was flagging fast. He’d been without sleep for more than twenty-four hours. Without the adrenaline of physical activity and danger to keep him primed, he craved sleep.Tess climbed onto the bed dressed in a T-shirt and bikini panties.“Oh, babe. Why don’t you hold that pose for a minute or ten and let me look at you? It’s been ten long, long months.”Tess laughed and rose on her knees to put her hands behind her head, her movements careful, as she stretched her lean body back in a model pose. She took his breath away, she was so beautiful. She’d still be gorgeous when she was seventy. The urge to sleep evaporated and his body quickened. He needed to be close. Real close. And make up for being so far away for so many months. He patted the bed beside him.“I thought you wanted me to hold the pose.” She smiled, a teasing light twinkling in her sherry-brown eyes. Her gaze tracked down to his obvious erection. “Or do you have something else in mind?”With his cock just begging for attention, Brett said, “I want to get as close to you as I can, for as long as I can. I’ve missed you like crazy.”The teasing light dimmed. She crawled to him and straddled his hips. Bracing her arms, she looked down at him. “I love you. I’ve thought of you a hundred times a day and reached for the phone to call you at least that many times. Every day.”“Ditto, honey. I’m sorry—”“Shh…” She pressed her fingers against his lips. “I love you and I’m so proud of what you do.” She seemed to struggle between a smile and tears for a moment until the smile won out. “But while you’re here you have to make up for all the sexual frustration I experienced while you were gone.”Brett laughed. “No problem.” He ran his hands beneath the satiny weight of her hair to cup the back of her head and pull her mouth down to his. Their lips and tongues meshed, then tangled in deep, slow, kisses. Had he ever wanted a woman this much? He wanted to hold her, make out with her, for hours. She pulled her T-shirt up just enough to rest her breasts against his chest. He caught his breath at the silky glide of her skin against his. “God, you feel so good, Tess.” He cupped the rounded curve of her ass and groaned when she moved her hips to tempt him. When he pulled up her T-shirt, she tensed. “I have some road rash along my shoulder blades. It’s a little tender.”“Let me see, honey.”“Nope. Later. You’re supposed to be concentrating on us, not a few scrapes.”From the way she moved, she had more than scrapes. If she wanted to put dealing with them on the back burner—But he couldn’t.He pushed up into a half-seated position and traced the edge of her jaw with his lips. “As much as I want you, Tess, just being here with you is more important to me. If you’re too sore, we have time for the other stuff later.”She hid her face against his shoulder and collapsed against him. “You’re so full of shit, Brett.” She thumped his chest with her fist. The blow was just a ruse to cover up her quick tears. Tess didn’t cry at the drop of a hat. She worked through things. Concern rocked the pit of his stomach. She’d been through a trauma, something she needed to work through physically and emotionally. He needed to focus on that, not on getting his rocks off. Brett nuzzled her neck. She shivered and nestled against him. He relaxed against the pillows and splayed a hand along the small of her back to hold her close, her weight a precious burden he’d support for hours if she wanted him to.Eventually she straightened her legs and moved to lie along his side. Brett turned with her so their limbs lay tangled and their faces close.“I’m so glad you’re home.” Her breath, warm and moist, skimmed along his collarbone. Her voice sounded soft, drowsy.“Me, too. This is what I dream about when I’m away.” Being skin-to-skin with her, knowing she was alive, in one piece, safe, was all he needed right now. He brushed her forehead with a kiss. When her breathing was finally even and deep, Brett allowed his muscles to relax, but his thoughts raced. She didn’t want him to know how badly she was hurt. Now that she wasn’t kissing him, he ran a searching gaze over her body. The shadowed impression of a bruise was forming along the thigh bent over his. The elbow resting along his stomach was already marred by a dark blue mark. Why hadn’t he noticed her injuries before?Because he’d been focused on her face, the sound of her voice, and the joy of occupying the same space with her.But now reality reared its nasty head, and with it the rage came rushing back. As soon as she woke, they were going to talk. And he was going to make some phone calls and arrange some backup protection while they conducted her investigation. The San Diego police wouldn’t provide protection for long. And once the Federal guys ruled out an act of terrorism, they’d be gone as well. The FBI or Homeland would figure out who it was eventually, they always did.He couldn’t do anything about catching the fucker, other than keep her safe while she covered her stories. But in the meantime he and Tess had a wedding coming up, and she would be out and about open to attack. No one was going to get close enough to hurt her again. It wasn’t happening. Not on his watch.

I Ain't A Writer Without You Dear Reader

Dear Reader:

Thank you for reading my words. Without you I would be writing for an audience of one.
Thank you for spending your hard earned money on my books, because I know it doesn't come easy.
Thank you for interacting with me on my social media sites. I know that takes up your time.
Thank you for helping me promote my books by sharing my posts, tweets, and sharing the books themselves. I gain more readers from your efforts than my own.
Thank you for writing reviews for my work, and letting me know what I'm doing right, and what I'm doing wrong. It is so helpful.
Thank you for your encouragement when I am overwhelmed with...life.
Thank you for understanding my obsession with my work.
Thank you for not thinking I'm crazy when I talk about my characters as though they are real people.
But the biggest thank you is for giving me your time for all of the above, because it is so valuable.
Because of you, I have the joy of doing something I love in my life and nothing can show the gratitude I feel for that.
Love,
Teresa Reasor

Does Size Matter? --In Books?

I've been seeing a trend in the writing-reading world. A trend toward shorter books. Mostly novella length things that run between 20,000-35,000 words. I suppose some readers like them because they're usually less money to purchase and can be read in about an hour and a half instead of the all day marathon most of my books demand. I'd love to know what you think so please leave a comment to this post if you have time. I've highlighted the questions I'd like you to ponder on as you read this blog.

I have written several shorter works. My latest is Have Wand Will Travel a Magic and Mayhem Kindle World novella of 35,324 words. But I have to tell you writing short is difficult for me. I've posted the word count for all my shorter pieces below.

To Capture A Highlander's Heart: The Beginning is  3,064
Caught In The Act is  3,331
An Automated Death is 14,099

To Capture A Highlander's Heart: The Courtship is 19,958
Breaking Ties (A SEAL Team Heartbreakers Novella) is 28,344
Magic and Mayhem: Have Wand Will Travel is 35,324

Questions: Do you prefer shorter books?  A full length novel is considered anything over 40,000 words. Would you prefer works closer to the shorter end or longer? Do you feel like you've gotten your money's worth when you purchase a shorter work for the same amount a longer work is charged? Or does that even play into the books you choose?

As a writer, I've been used to the comfortable 100,000 word length of my books. Most everything I write is that length or close to it. I have five books that have exceeded that Breaking Through (book 2) , Breaking Away (book 3) ,  and Breaking Out (book 6)  of the SEAL Team Heartbreakers Series, Captive Hearts   a Historical set in 1799 London, England, and Timeless  my Paranormal Time travel.

Here are the word counts for all these:

Timeless  139,379
Breaking Out  (Book 6 SEAL Team Heartbreakers)136,356
Breaking Through (Book 2 SEAL Team Heartbreakers) 129,638
Breaking Away (Book 3 SEAL Team Heartbreakers) 115,949
Captive Hearts 100,515

Question: Are you hesitant to purchase a book as long as these because of the time it will take to read them?  Timeless is over 400 pages as is Breaking Out.

The shortest full-length that I've written so far was 72,930 words is a paranormal. It's Deep Within The Shadows (book 1 of my Superstition Series)

It's difficult for me to write short because I don't normally write linear plot lines and I don't write straight romance. I can't go directly from point A to point B without someone being threatened or at least causing them a world of trouble. LOL

The closest thing I've written that would be considered a straight romance would be my short stories Caught In The Act, and  To Capture A Highlander's Heart: The Beginning and my novella To Capture A Highlander's Heart: The Courtship because they are linear plots and they deal with just the relationship between two people.

But if you want Romantic Suspense, I'm your girl. I usually have someone pursuing someone or generally have my characters caught up in some tangled web from which they have to fight their way free, while they're trying to figure out the relationship stuff and falling in love.

And I have been known to give my readers more than one romance in a book. Like Breaking Through has 3 romances and a suspense plot. Breaking Out has 2 romances, 2 parallel family situations my 2 couples have to extricate themselves from and a suspense plot line. So if you want more bang for your buck, I'll try and give it to you.  I'll give you what we writers call a braided plot with everything but the kitchen sink woven into the story, lots of emotional turmoil and still give you the Happy Ever After at the end of the book.

Questions: As readers would you prefer the romances to be separate? Each getting their own book? Does the transition back and forth between two or more romances bother or confuse you?

I can't write a braided plot in only 30,000 words. I'm caught up in my characters' worlds throwing curve balls at them to see what they're made of and making them work for the Happy Ever After they want. And that takes words. Three chapters at least just to introduce the inciting incident and start introducing the characters so you, the reader, will get to know and care about them.

Questions: Do you like for your characters to know one another before the book starts so those introductions can be shortened?

With those questions asked, here are the word counts for the rest of the books I've written from shortest to longest.

To Capture A Highlander's Heart: The Wedding Night ( Pt. 3 of the Highland Moonlight Spinoff)  73,947
Whisper In My Ear (paranormal Romance)  80,293
Breaking Boundaries (book 5 SEAL Team Heartbreakers) 80,908
Breaking Free  (book 1 SEAL Team Heartbreakers) 92,547
Building Ties (Book 4 SEAL Team Heartbreakers) 92,743
Highland Moonlight (Scottish Medieval Romance) 94,679

As you can see I have something for everyone from short short stories to very, very long novels. From 3,000 words to almost 140,000.

I'm just going to post the blurb from my last SEAL book Breaking out  and my novella for the Magic and Mayhem Kindle World Have Wand, Will Travel to make a point.

Breaking Out

Navy SEAL Zach O’Connor was dumped while he was deployed on a high-risk mission, and the fallout from the breakup nearly cost him his career. Never again will Zach allow his feelings to make him lose sight of what really matters. Not even when his attraction to Piper Bertinelli makes him long for the very thing he’s vowed to avoid.

Violence and heartache have nearly shattered Dr. Piper Bertinelli’s life, and the last thing she needs is to be attracted to a military man scheduled to deploy. Though all Zach wants is a distraction instead of a commitment, Piper is unable to resist the charismatic Naval officer. He makes her feel safe, something more seductive to her than him being a SEAL.
When an overzealous policeman from Piper’s past comes after her, Zach has to make a decision: walk away from the woman who's cracked the shell he built around his heart, or stick by her and possibly risk his career.
And there are other hurdles to face: the family who drove Piper away, but whose secrets may hold the key to understanding why her father was killed. And someone who’s a greater danger to Piper’s life than an angry cop. The man responsible for it all.

Can you even imagine being able to cram all that conflict into 30,000 words? I had trouble containing it in 136,000.

Questions: Do you prefer less conflict? Or less intense conflicts?

Magic and Mayhem: Have Wand, Will Travel
 A soul-sucking wand, a witch, a vampire and a hellhound. ‘Nuff said.

Private detective and gifted witch Zaira O’Shea has built her reputation on her ability to always find her relic, magical device, or man. When the Witches’ Council hires her to find and return a stolen wand, she can’t refuse, and she’s eager to recover the device. Until the clues lead her to a vampire with fallen-angel good looks, and talents that don’t require a bite to lead her into temptation.

History professor and vampire Christophe Bakas has brushed off his cat burglar skills to steal a powerful wand for the Vampire Council, but only because they are holding his uncle hostage.

But it is possible to put as much conflict as possible even into 36,000 words, but most of the time they have to be contained in a linear plot line that goes from point A to point B.
I loved writing this because it's comedic and the characters are quirky.

Question: Do you prefer more comedy?
I'd like to hear from my readers. I'd love to know how you feel about some of the questions I've asked because I'm currently working on two different projects and what you tell me here may have a bearing on how long they end up being because I want to please my readers.

My next two projects are Breaking Point (a SEAL Team Heartbreaker project with Langley and Trish)

And the second book of my Paranormal Superstition Series Deep Within The Stone.

What I do with these projects could be influenced by what you tell me. So sing out. I want to hear your opinions and ideas.

Read on,

Releasing Two Books in one Month is Tough

I love writing. It's been my life-long dream to be able to write for a living since middle school. And I love to write different genres. So far this year I've released a historical romance, T o Capture A Highlander's Heart: The Wedding Night, a military romantic suspense, Breaking Out (Book 6 of my SEAL Team Heartbreaker Series) and now a paranormal romantic comedy Kindle World novella, Magic and Mayhem: Have Wand, Will Travel

I've written 235,627 printed words this year and am working on two more books. I'm about 8,000 words into Breaking Point , the eighth installment for my SEAL Team Heartbreakers Series. I don't know if the book will be a novella or a full length novel yet. Probably somewhere in between. A short novel of 45,000 words I think. And I've written the opening scene (about 1000 words) of my next paranormal the second installment for my Superstition Series Deep Within The Stone.

My family says that I'm obsessed and I am. I write every day. Even if I'm traveling, sick, or crazy busy. Even if it's just 200 words.(Though I try to write 1000 words a day.)  I love the brainstorming, storyboarding, and character development of the whole process. And I love to have readers read what I've written.

I've been either writing or editing the last two projects Breaking Out and Have Wand, Will Travel for the last six weeks. And setting up promotional things to get the word out there so I haven't done as much writing as I'd like in the last three or so weeks.

And getting the books I write before the readers is very difficult. Especially because I write such different genres. Those people who read Navy SEAL romance don't read my historicals and those who read historicals don't read paranormals. I probably have very few people who read all my stuff. Unlike me who reads EVERYTHING.

But I'm throwing all these out there just in case you're like me and read EVERYTHING.

I've release two projects this month. Breaking Out (Book 6 of the SEAL Team Heartbreakers Series)

Here's the blurb:

Navy SEAL Zach O’Connor was dumped while he was deployed on a high-risk mission, and the fallout from the breakup nearly cost him his career. Never again will Zach allow his feelings to make him lose sight of what really matters. Not even when his attraction to Piper Bertinelli makes him long for the very thing he’s vowed to avoid.

And my Kindle World Novella  Magic and Mayhem: Have Wand, Will Travel   I'm writing in my own imaginary town Superstition Kentucky first and then I travel to AssJacket, West Virginia to Robyn Peterman's town and borrow a few of her wonderful characters for the climax of my story. I had a blast writing this. And I hope to write a few more. Loved my characters and they're just waiting for another story.

Here's the blurb:

A soul-sucking wand, a witch, a vampire and a hellhound. ‘Nuff said.

Private detective and gifted witch Zaira O’Shea has built her reputation on her ability to always find her relic, magical device, or man. And just for good measure because I've mentioned the two I released this month. I'm putting   To Capture A Highlander's Heart: The Wedding Night  out there just in case there are readers who are interested in the third project I released this year.

Here's the blurb:
Highland warlord Gabriel Campbell plans to wed Grace MacNab, but is stunned to learn the banns have been challenged on the grounds Grace is a lady by birth. They cannot marry under the king’s law without permission.

The man Grace fears most has come to Caisteal Sith to force her into marriage. And there are others eager to offer for her in exchange for access to the charter the king’s regent has given her, but she’s in love with Gabriel. Though she doubts the depth of Gabriel’s feelings, she’s convinced he’s still the best man to lead her clan and fulfill her heart’s desire.

Can the two stand together to fight tradition and win? Or will their chance at happiness be forever out of reach?

If anyone has any ideas about how to promote all three of the genres don't be shy. Sing them out loud and strong. I'm all ears. And if you've read all my stories or just some of them. THANK YOU. Without you I wouldn't be able to do what I do. Read on,Teresa Reasor

We'll be having a Facebook release party Saturday October 22nd. https://www.facebook.com/events/1239266302799267/?active_tab=discussion

There will be many books given away and the grand prize will be a Kindle with all the books from this release on it. Yea!!!Of course I have to toot my own horn just a little. I loved writing Have Wand, Will Travel. Loved my characters and my Vampire is HOT!  He has real Woo-woo.

Here's the blurb: A soul-sucking wand, a witch, a vampire and a hellhound.  ‘Nuff said.
Private detective and gifted witch Zaira O’Shea has built her reputation on her ability to always find her relic, magical device, or man. Only the vacationing Baba Yaga can make sure the wand isn’t used to destroy the careful balance between witch and vampire kind. If they can find her.
Assjacket, West Virginia here they come.
I'll be putting the links to all these stories on my webpage for the Kindle worlds as well so you can check them out. http://www.teresareasor.com Robyn's link is on there until that happens.

Here's a Sneak Snippet from mine:
She dropped the shielding she’d used to cage the vampire, but kept her eye on him.He reached out to feel for the barrier and, finding it gone, stuck his hands into his pockets and relaxed. Damn him, he looked like a GQ ad. Model-gorgeous and masculine as hell. He even had a little charm. Too bad he didn’t have a pulse. She pointed a warning finger at him. “Don’t try using any of your vampire woo-woo on me. It won’t work. I’m immune to it."He bowed his head and flashed her a fanged smile that shouldn’t have been charming, but was. “I will keep my woo-woo to myself.”The way he said it made it seem about something more than his ability to compel. Her cheeks burned.“How much are they paying you to find me?” he asked.“Five thousand dollars.”“They may have more in mind than a thank-you, since I know about the jewelry.”“Let me recover from one disappointment before you pile on another, will you?” It was depressing to discover your clients weren’t exactly what you expected them to be.He smiled, and with his fangs retracted and in the soft glow of the security lights, he looked human. But he wasn’t, she warned herself. And there was no proof what he said was true. But she would look into the Sutherlands’ finances, just in case. Dammit.“So you’re a private detective?” he asked.“Yes.”“And a witch.”“Yes.”“You’re exactly what I need at the moment.”Wow, the gall of some people. “If that’s a pickup line, you can forget it.”“No. It wasn’t.”Now she felt a little insulted.
“Not that you’re not attractive enough for me to want to pick you up, but I need a witch who’ll help me rescue someone very important to me.”
Thanks for swinging by and checking out our news. Hope to see you at the Facebook party.Teresa Reasor
