Breaking Boundaries (Book 5 of the SEAL Team heartbreakers) Prerelease and an Excerpt

As an author you never get over that big rush you get over finishing another book.
Then comes the hard part. Editing it.
But I don't think I'll ever get tired of what I do for a living now. I LOVE my job and I thank God every day I get to do it.

Breaking Boundaries, the 5th book in my SEAL Team Heartbreakers Series, is available for preorder. I never intended Breaking Boundaries to be a full length book, but the characters had a different idea. And their story line was such that there was no way I could tell their story in 35,000 words. So my readers get a 79,500 word full length book. I hope you'll like it. And it has Doc in it. I'm using this book as a kind of prequel to Doc's story so you, the reader, will get used to having his love interest call him Zach instead of Doc. And so you'll get a little more of his backstory.

Without further adu... Breaking Boundaries.

The Blurb:

Corporal Callahan Crowes returns home from Afghanistan missing part of a leg and haunted by guilt over the loss of his men. He pledges to live every moment of his life to the fullest and works to build a career in the only field he knows besides being a soldier: construction.
Reeling from her fiancé’s infidelity and their broken engagement, Kathleen O’Connor accepts a job far away from Boston and the suffocating pity of friends and family. She puts romance firmly behind her, and, armed with her shiny new architectural degree, launches her career with a commercial construction and design firm.
Her first day on the job, she sees Cal risk his life to rescue a fellow worker, and is shocked when his act of heroism triggers an unwarranted attack on him from her supervisor. When she learns Cal may lose his job because of his leg, Kathleen urges him to use social media to fight the decision, putting her own job at risk.

The public firestorm pushes Cal into the limelight in ways he least expects, but shows him a missing limb’s not the barrier to love he's believed it is. But there’s something besides business politics brewing at work, and when Kathleen’s life is threatened, she discovers there’s more to a man than two good legs—it’s the size of his heart that counts.
And an excerpt: AFGHANISTANPROLOGUE
The squeak and rattle of the vehicle’s chassis as they hit another pothole in the dirt clotted road acted as a minor irritant compared to the hundred and twenty degree heat inside. Corporal Cal Crowes, the driver, twisted the wheel to the right in an attempt to miss a hole big enough to bury a wheel and grunted in satisfaction when he straddled the pit.“Fuck me!” Private Jasper Holland exclaimed. “Ollie Gunter deserves a fast trip to hell with a short poker.”Cal started to laugh at the comment and decided he didn’t have the extra energy. The rolling oven they were currently traveling in, better known as a Humvee, slowly sapped the moisture from his body like a sauna. The two privates encased inside with him weren’t fairing any better. The only one in their foursome getting any relief was Private first class Neil Carter currently riding in the gun shield on the roof. The dusty road stretched ahead as they worked their way toward the northern mountains. Jasper continued his grumbling, “Why couldn’t he fix our damn air conditioning before this patrol? He had twelve fucking hours.”Though he had similar feelings for the mechanic, he needed to pull rank and head off the bitchfest. “Griping about it doesn’t change anything, Jazz. I’ll deal with it as soon as we return to base.”“After eight hours in this fucking kiln we’ll be so dehydrated none of us will feel like taking on that shit brick.” Private Mitchell Ellison said in a deadpan voice.Cal tracked movement as they passed a cart being pulled by a young boy heading in the opposite direction. His jaw tightened. Sweat rolled down his sides beneath his shirt but it did nothing to cool the sensation of being baked inside his body amour. The window next to him beckoned with the promise of some small relief. With the possibility of having a grenade tossed into the vehicle or a lucky shot being placed by a sniper they didn’t dare take the risk. “I’ll deal with Ollie.”In the rear view mirror Cal caught Ellison’s quick movement as he tossed a look behind them to the small convoy of vehicles following theirs. “I bet if we were SEALs Gunter would have fixed our vehicle,” Ellison murmured. “Those guys can get things done when they need it.”The Special Ops eight man team, riding four to a vehicle in the convoy behind them had looked well armed and focused. Flash Carney, the sniper of the team and Greenback Shaker, had accompanied their Marine squad on more than one patrol when they sought to clear buildings suspected of harboring insurgents. They were the only two he knew. Those guys probably fixed their own damn vehicle issues when they had to. Maybe if they were able to do the same they wouldn’t be steaming inside the armored Humvee with the dismal breeze from above. The situation fed his anger and his voice took on an edge. “I put in the order. Gunter didn’t do the work and I had no control over that. I’ll have control over what happens when we get back though. Now stow this shit and keep your eyes o—.”A shallow depression, suspicious and threatening, lead up to the next pothole. Cal stomped on the breaks and swung the wheel sharply to the left in an attempt to miss it.Sound roared through the vehicle pounding his eardrums, his brain. The front of the Humvee heaved upward. The steering wheel clipped his chin and snapped his head back.  His vision went white, then gray, faded to black. He woke to a harsh ringing in his ears and the smell of smoke. He threw out a searching hand. Who was beside him? Jazz? He gripped the mesh on the man’s body armor. Smoke billowed from the front of the vehicle. They’d been hit. They had to get out of the Humvee. He forced his eyes to stay open. Blood gushed from Jazz’s mouth to run down his chin onto his BDUs. The car’s engine sat in his lap pinning him to the seat. God. “Ja—.” Cal’s jaw hung numb and useless. His mouth was full of marbles. He used his tongue to work them out. Bits of his own teeth hung off his chin. The door beside him was jerked open. The rattle of machine gun fire sounded muffled as it burst from a few yards to the right. He reached for his sidearm and drew it. He had to protect himself, his men. He focused in relief on the camouflage uniform within his vision. Thick red hair stuck out from under a Boonie hat. Dark green eyes, stony with purpose, scanned his face. A rust colored beard covered the lower half of his face. The guy reached in and dragged him free. Cal’s head pounded like his skull was being beaten to dust by a jackhammer. The world tilted and the sky, burning bright blue, blistered his eyes and he closed them as pain knifed through his brain. “My men,” he tried to say and it ended up sounding like “M-mn.”“Where’s that chopper?”The words were still muffled but he could hear them.”“Fifteen minutes out.”Bullets rattled and pinged off the smoldering remains of the Humvee’s chasse. Red threw himself over Cal to cover him, his body curved to hold his weight off of him as much as possible. An explosion sounded from close by and the shots ceased. Red pried the side arm Cal gripped away from him. “You won’t need this. You’re covered.” “Bowie.” He flipped a length of stretchy rubber and a tongue depressor at the soldier beside him. “Get a tourniquet on that leg.”  Cal barely felt the needle he jabbed a needle into the bend of his arm. Red hooked up an IV.Whose leg? Was it one of the guys’? When Bowie knelt at his side Cal realized it was his leg they were talking about. Where were his men? Jazz? Neil? Ellison?Cal tried to turn his head in the direction of the vehicle but the red headed guy gripped his face. He nearly screamed as the pain shot to the top of his head.“Don’t turn your head. You have a broken jaw and maybe a broken neck.” His body felt numb but he could still move his arms and legs. “Mn.”Red stopped what he was doing to lean over him. “Focus on getting through the next minute Corporal, then the next five. Keep breathing. You’re going to make it.” By not saying anything about the others, he was saying they were dead. Ellison with his dry wit. Jazz with his soft Tennessee twang who tried his patience. Neil, the quiet boy from Oklahoma. They were gone. The pain of it crushed his lungs and brought every injury he had roaring to life. He couldn’t grit his teeth around it because his jaw wouldn’t work. Both his legs burned with agony. He choked out a groan as Red cut away his pants and applied pressure dressings around different parts of his legs. When they lifted him onto a stretcher he yelped in pain every muscle in his body clenching against it. His vision went white, then gray again.  “Stay with me Corporal.” The SEAL medic wrapped an ace bandage around the stretcher and his forehead, insuring his head remained stationary.  “I can’t give you any morphine. You have a head injury. They’ll assess you at the hospital and give you something for the pain. You just have to hold on a little while longer.”Five minutes seemed like an hour when the numbness began to recede and his injuries began to scream. His whole face ached and his eyes watered. His legs were on fire. Red crunched a chemical ice pack and put it to his face. The coolness eased the pain a tiny bit. He gripped the man’s wrist in gratitude.A black hawk chopper came in low, spun around and landed in the desert a hundred feet from their location. The SEALs lifted the stretcher and carried him to it.The rotor blades turned above, pounding him with air and jerking at his clothing. Three black body bags next to him rustled. He was flying back with the men he’d started the patrol with. Their faces, the sound of their voices rushed back to him in a kaleidoscope of pain. He’d turned the wheel to avoid the IED too late. The world had gone to hell. Tears streamed down his temples. The medic on board the chopper reached across him and grabbed the IV bag from Red. Flash, the SEAL sniper he’d worked with, leaned over him and gave his arm a squeeze. “You’re going to make it, Cal. Believe it.” With the dead bodies of his men lying beside him, it was hard to believe in anything.

But all his military training can’t help him combat this danger.

An Excerpt:
CHAPTER 1
Juliet Templeton scanned the patrons lined up at the bar waiting for drinks. Her hands flew as she packed ice into a glass and measured vodka in a jigger and dumped it in. She reached for the orange juice and tipped the jug.
“Have I told you this vampire-biker-chick look suits you?” Justin’s warm, moist breath brushed her neck. She flinched away, resisting the urge to elbow him in the gut. Orange juice splashed onto the counter. For weeks, since he’d been hired to bartend, he’d pushed for a date. He was doing it again tonight. With his shaggy mop of dark hair, clean-shaven, angular jaw, and hazel eyes, he could pass for Hayden Christensen’s cousin. Even with the Goth makeup turning his skin pale, he exuded sex appeal. Had her feelings not been deadened to it—to him—to every man, since—
“Look Justin. I don’t date anyone I work with. It causes too many complications. Move on to someone else.”
His smile wavered but didn’t quite die. “Maybe I’ll have to quit my job, then.”
She shook her head. I’m not worth the sacrifice. I’m trouble you don’t need. She slid the drink to the waiting customer and picked up his money.
A woman slinked up to the bar, her tight black strapless dress hugging her generous curves like a sausage casing. With arrogance and grace, she raised her hand in a demanding gesture. Juliet took a deep breath. She didn’t have the patience to deal with Justin and her, too. She nodded toward the customer. “Can you get her order? I need to ring this up.” She waved the money in her hand.
With a wry grin, Justin strolled down the workspace behind the bar, his shoes squeaking on the rubber mat.
Juliet heaved a gusty sigh. Maybe he’d hook up with Ms. Sausage and quit pressuring her. Hell, maybe they’d find true love together. She could only hope.

Her feet ached, as did her back, from nearly ten hours behind the bar. Even her facial muscles felt tired from smiling at customers. She just wanted to finish her shift and go home to a long, long bath and an empty bed.
She returned to the task at hand. The heavy metal beat from the stage pounded against her ears, drowning out the beep of the cash register as she keyed in the order. The base drum thumped in time with the headache throbbing behind her eyes. Jesus! She rubbed her temples. The rock bands Hector hired were usually more than loud enough, but for the last two weeks, The Skull’s music had been falling just short of an assault.
She scanned the dance floor where a strobe light captured the dancers’ stop-action gyrations. Not couples, but the group, the collective. They moved as one. She paused a moment, attempting to guess which were human and which had something to hide. The smoke machine backstage provided an eerie atmospheric backdrop for the band and the audience. Since they were already painted and garbed in Goth style, the special effects lent the patrons the look of extras on a Day of the Dead movie set.
The bar was the new happening hangout in Superstition, Kentucky. Business was booming. Tips were good. Unless you knew what to look for, it was difficult to sort the real from the imagined. Management strenuously encouraged the employees to dress a part. And the clientele.
Since the college had taken root, the sleepy little town of Superstition had begun to attract an interesting demographic. Very interesting.
The counter was sticky from orange juice she slopped while trying to fix a screwdriver and also avoid Justin’s latest pseudo-amorous efforts. She wiped her workstation with a damp sponge, tossed it in the sink, and turned her attention to the next drink order, a Primal Scream. The lead singer accompanied the order with a shrill demonstration. Juliet winced.
From the stage, a spotlight swept across the crowd and paused on the bar. Blinking against the harsh glare, she snatched up a bottle of Kahlua from the packed shelves. Its sweet scent momentarily dulled the flowery smell of her last customer’s cologne. The mirror behind the bar captured a brief glimpse of her pale face and exaggerated eye makeup.
A movement, a form, stealthy, fast, and gray, rose behind her in the glass. Cold feathered her skin and crawled across her scalp. The shape sprouted two very long arm-like appendages that looped around her. With a startled yelp, she twisted around to face the threat. The spotlight swung away.
Juliet blinked, blinded by the change in light. Her vision cleared.
Nothing. Nothing was there.

THE FINAL BLURB:Welcome to Superstition, Kentucky

When both are viciously attacked within minutes of each other, they are forced to leave their differences behind in order to survive.
Caleb Faulkner has always loved Miranda Templeton. Her letters to him, during his deployment gave him a slice of home to hold on to. Even though they’re finally together, something is keeping her from acting on her feelings. When she and her sister are injured Caleb’s driven to protect them both. He decides to stay close to the twins so he can catch the real killer. But his police training is useless against his growing feelings for Juliet and what’s hiding DEEP WITHIN THE SHADOWS.

Here's a sneak peak at the first chapter (this is an unedited version):PROLOGUE
A hungry scream echoed behind him in the distance. Willy jerked, a strangled gasp tearing from him. His heart beat high in his throat. He kicked his shuffling jog into a run. Sweat ran in rivulets down his face. After the coolness of the basement he’d just left, he was baking alive in the hot, still humidity that hung in the air.       Damn that security guard for putting him out. He wasn’t botherin’ nothin'. Fucking jerk. Luckily he knew where Gerry was staying. They’d split up weeks ago, hoping to throw the shadows off. It hadn’t worked. They just kept coming, night after night. And now the daytime creatures were on the prowl there was no place left to hide. God he was so tired.       Another angry cry sounded from a block away. They were getting closer. If he could get far enough ahead he might find somewhere to hole-up until daylight. Somewhere no light could enter. A basement, crawlspace, anything. He’d even take the bottom of a dumpster if he could find one that was empty enough for him to squeeze in.       He careened around the corner of Kentucky Street and slipped into a dim alley. The sour smell of his own sweat mingled with the odor of rotting garbage from the dumpster at the back of one of the restaurants. His feet hit a flat sheet of corrugated cardboard and his right foot slid forward before the other could catch up. His left knee hit the ground with all his weight and he cried out.       “Jesus, oh Jesus.” He was hurt. Something had cut into his knee. Pushing up with one hand, something gooey squished between his fingers. He swore and slung his hand to get it off as he staggered to his feet. Hugging the brick wall of the building, he settled back into the deepest pool of darkness he could find. He wiped his filthy hand on his pants and probed the knee with the other one. A triangle of glass stuck out of his flesh and blood welled up around it. He jerked the shard free and a whimper of pain tore from him. He slung the piece of glass away with a sob.      They’d smell the blood and track him. He didn’t know how they did it, but they always seemed to know where he was. Oh God, if only they hadn’t tried to kidnap that girl. He knew she had something to do with them. They’d shown up right after they’d killed the guy she was with. The burns had finally healed and now he had a cut that would probably rot his leg off.      He hobbled forward a foot or two. The pain made him light headed. The coppery scent of his own blood turned his empty stomach. He gagged.       How long had it been since he’d eaten. Two days. He’d been afraid to leave the safety of the basement. Until the asshole guard had tossed him out. If he could just reach Gerry’s motel room. Gerry would have some food. Maybe some weed. They could wait out the night in the dark together.       Another scream came from the end of the alley and he jumped. In the wide, yellowish-white circle from the streetlight, a dark gray form rose. Its arms hung down nearly three quarters of its form.  Strangely elongated fingers repeated a grabbing movement like a crab's claw, as though it hoped to pluck him from his hiding place. Though it had no eyes, and he hid in the deepest shadows cast by the three-story brick building, it homed in on where he stood twenty feet away with unerring precision. The creature opened its mouth like a black pit and screamed again. The sound, a blend of a baboon-like cry and an ear-ringing roar, was filled with frustration and rage.        Willy quivered in fear. His knee ached like an abscessed tooth. His mouth tasted pasty and dry and his bladder felt uncomfortably full.        The shadow paced back and forth looking for the light it needed to travel by. Willy stumbled further down the alley, hugging the building. The rough bricks picked at his clothing and scrapped his arm, his hand, as he attempted to stay out of even the most anemic light cast from the windows above him.       His head jerked up at the sudden rumble of an engine approaching. A silver car swung into the street directly in front of him, the bright headlights pinning him against the wall. Willy opened his mouth. “No-o-o-o-o!” The scream of denial worked its way up his throat. Almost from beneath his feet, a shadow leaped from the ground with inhuman speed.       Willy half turned to run. A slicing pain caught him just beneath his ribs and he was shoved against the wall and lifted. His legs scissored, running in space. A suffocating fullness invaded his chest. His heart seized. The pain stole his breath and limited his scream to a choked gurgle.  His bladder released and the warm urine ran down his legs to wet his pants all the way to his socks.        As the creature squeezed his heart to bursting, Willy’s last thought was one of relief. His two-month hell was over.

DEEP WITHIN THE SHADOWS Coming Soon in May!!!

I don't have a set release date yet but Deep Within The Shadows will be out in May. I'll keep posting updates to keep you notified.  Deep Within The Shadows is  a Paranormal Urban Fantasy set in the southeastern hills of Kentucky in a small town named Superstition.

THE FINAL BLURB:Welcome to Superstition, Kentucky
Twins Miranda and Juliet Templeton have been haunted by childhood trauma their entire lives. One has the reputation for being bold and rash, the other compulsively responsible.
But all his military training can’t help him combat this danger.
Detective Chase Robinson is lead investigator for the murder of Tanner Newton. When the two hired thugs responsible for Tanner’s death are killed and Juliet, his only witness, nearly strangled to death, Chase is certain the crimes are connected. He decides to stay close to the twins so he can catch the real killer. But his police training is useless against his growing feelings for Juliet and what’s hiding DEEP WITHIN THE SHADOWS.

Here's a sneak peak at the first chapter (this is an unedited version):PROLOGUE
The distant sound of a hungry scream echoed behind him. Willy jerked, a strangled gasp tearing from him. His heart beat high in his throat. He kicked his shuffling jog into a run. Sweat ran in rivulets down his face. After the coolness of the basement he’d just left, he was baking alive in the hot, still humidity that hung over the area.       Damn that security guard for putting him out. He wasn’t botherin’ nothin’. His left knee hit the ground with all his weight and he cried out in pain. A triangle of glass stuck out of his flesh and he could feel blood welling up around it. Strangely elongated fingers repeated a grabbing movement over and over as though it hoped to pluck him from his hiding place. His legs kicked weakly.

Deep Within The Shadows/ Paranormal Love Blog

I'm so thrilled to announce that I've just finished my next book DEEP WITH THE SHADOWS.  It's an urban fantasy/paranormal set in Superstition, Kentucky. The first book of a series. Of course Superstition is a fictitious place in the hills of Southeastern, Kentucky. Release should be in mid May 2015.

Sneak peak on the cover!!!

Here's the blurb:

Welcome to Superstition, Kentucky
Twins Miranda and Juliet Templeton have been haunted by childhood trauma their entire lives. One has the reputation for being bold and rash, the other compulsively responsible.

And don't forget my other two paranormals:
TIMELESS

Archaeology student, Regan Stanhope, lands the chance of a lifetime when she’s chosen to work on a summer dig in Loch Maree, Scotland. The ancient monoliths hidden beneath the loch are the most important discovery since Stonehenge. And for seven hundred years, they have been waiting—for her.

Saturation diver Quinn Douglas is contracted to recover some of the megaliths from the loch’s bottom. The job will breathe life into the struggling salvage business he and his brothers are building. But from the moment he arrives, Quinn is plagued by dreams and feelings from a past he did not live. Or did he?

Regan and Quinn are drawn to each other as they research the monoliths and the reason behind their shared visions. But both sense something mystical at work, delving into their minds, manipulating their emotions. And when they finally discover the monoliths’ extraordinary secret, they know they must seal them away from those who are desperate to unlock their power. Even if it means remaining caught in a timeless struggle between the past and present forever.

7 Things About My Writing and a Kick Ass Contest

Kallypso Masters challenged me on Facebook recently to write seven things about my writing.  After writing the post for Facebook, I thought I'd post it here on my blog and also some news about a contest I'm participating in that will be running for the next month.
         1.  I am a plotter and a pantser rolled into one. I’ll have the general idea of what my book is going to be about. Have all the physical traits of my characters, emotional baggage, and conflicts all plotted out on a character chart so I can keep all of it straight. And I have a story board I put all the plot points of first kiss, first love scene, black moment and etc.  down on.  But anything that happens in between is fair game and gets written down as it happens.
        2.  I story board my books so I can keep track of Character Point of View and because I’m an artist and a writer I need that visual aid. It helps me see in color—because each of the characters have their own color, this helps me track exactly how often each character gets to express their point of view. And it helps me recognize at a glance how the plot is progressing that way nothing stays static, suspense wise and emotional wise.
        3.  Dialogue is the hardest thing for me to write. There are days I really struggle at the beginning of the book until I figure out what my characters are like and who they really are, what they want to say, need to say, and how they’ll say it. Then it’s difficult for me to get them to shut up.
        4.  Action sequences are the easiest for me to write but take me a long time. Every action reaction has to be just right before I can let them go. Every word has to have an impact or I’m not happy with it. And the movement of character’s through space during an action sequence is difficult to capture unless you really know what’s around them. So you have to get a clear picture of the setting they’re fighting, running, making love in to write them.
        5.  Love scenes take me longer than the action sequences.  They’re so emotional and every word and action has to project that. It takes me forever to get them just right. I’ve spent up to 5 days on some.            6.  I get very attached to my characters and will cry over them, get pissed off at them, and miss them once I’ve put the book to bed. I cried all the way through Breaking Through. They become real people to me.
        7.  I write multiple genres. Paranormal, Military Romantic Suspense, Contemporary Romance, Historical Romance, Urban Fantasy, Children’s books.
SEAL TEAM Heartbreaker Series , Historical Romances , Short stories Paranormal Romantic Suspense  , Fantasy Romance
The urban fantasy/ paranormal book I’m working on will be my 9th published full-length work.  I love writing long because it’s really-really difficult for me to write short. Kally and I are similar in that manner since we both think 98,000 words is short.

I love to write. It’s better than food, better than watching movies, better than sex. Better than anything I can think of other than my children. I wrote my first book in second grade and I haven’t stopped since. Some are in boxes under the bed and will never see the light of day. I think I have nine manuscripts that will never be published. I call those my learning-the-craft stories. And now I’ll soon have 9 full length novels published to make up for those lost stories. Luckily the published works are nothing like the ones hidden away. But I learned so much by writing those practice books. They were each and every one worth it.
I'm putting my CONTEST announcement in the form of a tweet in case any of you would like to tweet it for me.

January 26th I released a Paranormal Romance Whisper In my Ear.  It is a contemporary love story, sexy and sweet, about a Mermaid and a Siren living in San Diego and trying to pass as human. It has left them both isolated because they aren't human and both have special abilities.

When they discover one another they finally have someone with whom they can be themselves, but there's a hitch. If they make love they may bond physically and emotionally to the point they can read each others thoughts and feel each others emotions, an invasion of which neither is quite ready. And just when they think they might be, there's another hitch. Of course, there has to be.

Here's the blurb:

Injured as a child, mermaid Katrina Lawson has adapted to living on land among humans. Denied the comfort of her water world, she’s stripped of her ability to transform and to hear. But the promise of a cochlear implant offers her a ray of hope.
