AN INTERVIEW WITH BRANDI GILLILAN

Today I've invited Brandi Gillilan to join us on my blog. She's answered some interview questions so we can get to know about her and her writing. And she's going to introduce us to her newest release LET IT SNOW .





Tell us what inspired your story?
Let It Snow was inspired by the song and an anthology topic. It was ‘what would happen if a Billionaire was put in a situation that their money couldn’t get them out of’. So I chose a blizzard and being stranded in a cabin with her long time love.

What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing it to life?The deadline was a difficult part. I’m horrible with time management. But also trying to stay with a believable storyline that didn’t stray too far from reality.
What genres are you most drawn to to read and to write?Just about anything romance. But I love a good paranormal or mystery. And if it combines all three? Even better. Oh, and dark! If it has a dark theme or feel overall then I’m willing to read it! Describe your hero and tell us a little about him.Jace is a relaxed guy. He prefers to be away from people, except for one woman. He has loved Natalia all of their lives, but lost her. When he gets a call that Natalia needs help from herself he runs to her rescue, stealing her away to his mountain cabin.
Describe your heroine and tell us a little about her.Natalia is a headstrong woman that thought she lost her chance to be with her best friend. So she throws herself into her job, making herself sick.‘

What brings the two together and what threatens to keep them apart?They are brought back together when Natalia needs saved from herself. A misunderstanding and a jealous woman was what drove them apart. What about your writing style is different or similar to other writer’s styles?I think I’m different in the fact I try to write something that would make other authors pause. For example, in one book I’m writing the heroine is scarred on her face. They are obvious and can’t be hidden. Some authors feel that isn’t a good idea and it takes away from the relatability of the character. But I feel there are scarred people out there that would appreciate a scarred heroine, make them understand they are still beautiful.
How did you come up with the title?I use song titles. I find a song that helps inspire the story and use it for the title. not very creative, but it leads to some interesting titles!
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?I’m not sure, maybe to make sure you know the whole story before you make rash decisions that could lose you the love of your life.
If you’re writing a series, have you kept the same characters throughout?And what through line or theme have you used to tie it together?I actually have a series started. The first book is called Buy Me A Rose and it’s part of the Wicked Fairytales: The Curvy Collection Anthology Boxed Set. It is a Fairytale about Rose Red, Snow White’s sister in the older versions of the story.
She is being married off and being targeted by an Evil Witch Queen. I am using fairytales to link my books as well as keeping my main characters active in each book. Is what you’ve written based on your own experiences someone you know?I have a book to work on based on dreams I’ve had, I nicknamed it the Creepy Story. Another will be inspired by some things my sister and I have experienced.
What books have most influenced your life?I read a LOT of books. And some of them I forget about and others just stay with me. Some of those that stayed with me are the Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, TONs of Manga and of course Nora Roberts’s work. Each one has influenced how I write and gave me the encouragement to try pushing boundaries outside of my comfort zone.

What book are you reading now?
Currently I’m reading Happy Ever After by Nora Roberts. I have always loved her books.Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?Kiersten Fay, she writes amazing Sci-fi, Romance and she just started a new Paranormal series.  Lisa Kessler who writes sexy and steamy romance and there are many others I can’t think of at the moment.
What are your current projects?Currently I’m working on books for the six songs that won in the New Year’s Book Bash. But other than that I am working on the sequel to Buy Me A Rose. It’s called Lucky Star, Tinkerbell’s story. And I have two or three books in the editing phase.
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?I would make it longer and fill out the story some more. If writing a series, which characters will you continue with in other books?In my Fairytales series I will continue to use Rose and as I go through the books I will pick up other characters. Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?I have always been a reader and I loved to write. I started with poetry and then when I was in the 7th grade one of my friends dared me to write an idea down. I used one of my favorite animes, Dragon Ball Z for inspiration and started writing. It was a LONG story. About 8 spirals long, all hand written. I never got to finish it because it got lost in a house fire. But starting that one story got me writing freely.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?Often times for me it’s writing the beginning of the book. I always have trouble figuring out where to start. But I also have to edit down ideas. I can get right at the end and come up with a new idea. I have to stop and check over my book to see if it will help. If it does, I need to work it in and if not, then I need to wrap up the story before I get another idea.
Who is your cover artist?Seraphina Donavan did the cover for Let It Snow. But I have another artist Carey Abbott from Safari Heat Book Tours and Author Services did the cover for three books I have in editing. What was the hardest part of writing your book?POV. I have a bad habit of jumping from the Hero’s point of view to the Heroine’s and back without any indication of the switch.
Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?Detail placement. I like to help the reader picture what’s going on in the story, but my problem was writing it all at the front so they were overloaded. My writing group helped me with that.
Do you have any advice for other writers?Keep your chin up. There will be people that trash your work but there are more that will love it. You just have to be willing to work for it. Advertise and post anywhere you can. Also, writing groups help a LOT when writing. They help you work out ideas, trouble spots and are great sounding boards.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?Authors enjoy hearing from their readers. Any thoughts or ideas about our work are greatly appreciated. But if you read something you didn’t enjoy please be constructive in your critique.

Katrina Larson rolled the glass of rum and coke between her palms. What was she doing here? Since she was deaf, she felt as out of place as a cowboy at a fashion show. When her girlfriends leaped to their feet as soon as the singer’s attention fell on them, she’d fought the urge to sink under the table.Now she studied the man on stage. He was tall, at least six foot three, dark, muscular, and very masculine. He projected a raw sexuality every woman in the room responded to, including her. All her friends had talked about for weeks was Drew Saunders. They raved about his voice. But she would never understand what special quality they heard in it. Even with the cochlear implant she was considering, her hearing would be…different.
When he began to play, the vibration from his keyboard feathered against her skin and beat beneath her feet, but she couldn’t hear the words he sang. Nor was she close enough to read his lips. When the other women lounged back into their seats, she took her cue from them and relaxed.
A low-level hum penetrated the silence she lived in, startling her and jerking her forward in her seat. She searched the room, eager, her heart pounding. It had been nearly six years since she’d heard any sound. She’d missed it, missed the ebb and flow of the pitch inside her head. Where was it coming from now?
Her eyes settled on the man on stage. She couldn’t hear a word of what he was singing, but beneath the surface tone there was a sensual vibration low enough to penetrate her deafness.
What was he? If he were a member of her Shoal, she’d recognize it. Though she wasn’t of pure blood, she could still recognize her own. And being on land, he’d be as deaf as she.
Because of the pitch he was able to project, he had to be something aquatic, but not of her species. The resonance was too different.
Fascinated and hungry for sound of any kind, she strained to hear each note he projected. Sitting next to her, her best friend, Cheryl, grasped her wrist and leaned close enough for her to read her lips in the light of the candle on their table. “I just had an orgasm. I swear to God. All he has to do is sing and you just go. I wish you could hear this, Katrina.”
Shock held her prisoner for several moments. He was seducing the audience with his voice. She spied a man two tables over from her, and he seemed more interested in checking out the breasts of the woman next to him than the man singing.
So only the women in the audience were affected. He had seduced her too, but the effect was blunted because of her hearing issues. Her stomach cramped. What he was doing was…wrong.
What could she do? She studied each of the women she’d come with, her coworkers. Cheryl, Jacqueline, and Hallee all seemed to be mesmerized. If she tried to explain, none of them would believe her. But she couldn’t just sit here and watch him manipulate her friends. She had to leave and figure out what to do.
A movement from the side of the stage caught her attention. Drew Saunders stood and played the last few bars of the song. Then he motioned to someone offstage, and three men walked out.Katrina rose and tapped Cheryl on the shoulder. Used to speaking instead of signing with her, she said, “I have to go.”
“You haven’t even finished your drink,” Cheryl protested.
Katrina slid the rum and coke over to her. “I haven’t touched it. You can have it. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
She collected her bag, and, glancing toward the stage one last time, wove her way through the crowd toward the door.
***Drew motioned his band members on stage. “Ladies and gentlemen. On drums is Rand Michaels.”
As soon as he reached him, Rand said, “What the fuck’s going on, Drew? You going solo now?”The drummer’s anger vibrated off him like static. It underscored his unshaven, tattooed, rocker look. His attempts to live up to his own hype were getting old, though. Drew gave him a long look. “The natives were restless. Sam was worried they might damage the club.”
Rand scanned the audience. “They look okay now.” A heavy undertone of accusation sharpened his voice.
Drew controlled his expression, and his anger, with an effort. There was a time and a place for everything. Who knows what an act of violence on stage could set off in this audience? “Take your bow, Rand, and get ready for the show.” Drew threw out a hand toward the other two band members. “On base, Tony Cosimini. On guitar is Simon Fletcher.”
While the men were getting settled, Drew glanced toward the table of women he’d been watching. The blonde was halfway across the room, winding her way toward the door. Her hair swung from side to side, brushing the small of her arrow-straight back, her gait purposeful. For a moment, he was distracted by the lush curve of her jeans-encased hips, and the graceful way they swayed with every step she took. Where was she going?
His stomach tightened. His heart hammered.
She was leaving!
Why wasn’t she affected by his singing like the others? He had to find out. He had to stop her. He dodged the mike stand and leapt off the stage. Women surged to their feet and hands reached for him. Drew tugged free of one woman’s grasp, then another.
A brunette with big hair and a sultry expression ran a hand down the front of his jeans and gave his gear a painful squeeze. Jesus! Grasping her wrist, he pushed her into her seat and shoved past the next two who stood in his path.
His hand closed around the blonde’s shoulder and he swung her around. “Why are you leaving?”Large blue-green eyes, the color of the sea, focused on his face, then widened in surprise. Her hair, a caramel color streaked with every shade of blonde from platinum to honey, tumbled forward to frame her high cheekbones. Her bow-shaped mouth parted in shock as she shrank from him.He grasped her arm. “Don’t go.”
A high-pitched sound, piercing and sharp struck him like a blow. Pain lanced through the bones of his face, his teeth. He bent at the waist and covered his ears.
The frosted glass panes in the door shattered, throwing diamond-shaped pieces through the air and across the polished black and white tile floor. He threw up an arm to protect his face and twisted away.
Bedlam reigned as people sitting close by surged to their feet and ran toward the stage.
The sound ceased, cut off as suddenly as it had erupted. He straightened, panting. The aftereffects of the noise had left him dizzy. Even with his hearing blunted from the trauma, he heard the bottles of liquor behind the bar continue to tinkle like wind chimes, as though the glass retained a lingering resonance.
He turned to the door. What the hell was that? Was she okay?
An evening breeze wafted through the empty metal doorframe, carrying with it the smell of car exhaust.
The blonde was gone.

In Honor of All Hallows' Eve and Samhain/Calan Gaeaf

All Hallows' Eve–the modern day Halloween has been celebrated for hundreds of years. In ancient times in Ireland and Scotland bonfires would be lit to remind witches of the fires of hell they tempted by casting spells and also to hold at bay the spirits that walked the earth on the last day of fall. It was the beginning of the dark time of the year—winter.

It was the last day of the harvest and the time to prepare for the cold months ahead. The ancient God's had to be appeased with offerings so people and livestock would be assured to survive the difficult times. But it was also a time to honor ancestors who had passed on. The table would be set with food for each missing family member, who it was believed would return to their home that one day a year.

From the sixteenth century until today, the custom of trick or treat has been practiced. Wearing costumes or blacking their faces to fool the spirits and fairies roaming the earth, groups would move from house to house to either guise(make mischief) or receive treats. The offering of food to both the Gods and to those who visited was supposed to insure prosperity for the coming year.

Since neither Ireland, Scotland or Wales grow pumpkins like we have in the U.S. it was the custom to carve jack-o-lanterns out of turnips to light the way and represent the spirits of the dead.

All Hallow's Eve is one of my favorite times of the year besides Christmas. So in honor of the coming celebration I thought I would post excerpts once a week from my two paranormal stories. Timeless and An Automated Death.

The first one is from Timeless:

Excerpt:
The trail sloped down, the heavy growth of trees shielding the henge from view for a time. The foliage grew sparser and opened into a clearing.
Loch Maree provided a purplish-blue backdrop to the circle of twenty stones topped by lintels that stretched nearly the width of the inlet. A knoll of ground provided a natural dam holding back the water.
Braden led her beneath the crossbar spanning a narrow path between two of the stones. Atop the limestone altar in the center of the site sat her basket, the long stems of several plants sticking over the sides. The edge of her tartan shawl, bunched beside it, fluttered in the breeze. Braden paused in the shade of one of the slabs, a sudden wary tension in his stance.
Warm moist air looped around them. A prickling sensation fluttered over Coira’s skin as though a lightning strike had just dispersed. The smell of smoke lingered on the breeze. Braden’s grasp tightened upon her hand, holding her at his side.
More curious than alarmed, she ran a soothing hand down his arm. “Be at ease. There is nothing to fear in this place.”
She closed her eyes and embraced the power that lingered on the air like mist. Pulling away from Braden’s grasp, she walked clockwise along the edge of the circle. A low hum traveled through the bottoms of her feet to the top of her head, the vibration intensifying as she neared one particular stone. The Ogham designs carved into the pillar writhed black against the reddish light the setting sun painted upon the slab’s surface.
The air grew still and weighted with moisture. She tasted it, like dew, on her tongue. Her skin grew damp. The sound of the wind, the movement of the trees, her own breathing, ceased. Her ears felt full, as if she had climbed a tall peak and needed to swallow to clear them. What was about here?
“Coira—” Braden spoke behind her, his tone taut with wariness.
An area, head high, on the block wavered like something live wrestled within it. A bulge appeared pulsing, panting, as if the stone were giving birth. A shape thrust forward. Coira staggered back in surprise and fear, a startled cry torn from her.
Shoulders bowed, the figure stretched its neck back as though attempting to relieve the cramped pain of release. The head turned. A strange oval structure covering the top third of the face, a round disk covered the mouth with a black piece as thick as an eel attached to it. 
For a moment, the form retained the gray color of the limestone in which it was imbedded, and then the stone slid away like liquid leaving the flesh exposed. The features were feminine, her head, neck, and shoulders encased in something gray-black as a seal’s pelt. With a wiggle, and a sound like the release of suction, a single arm and hand flopped free reaching toward her. The pale blue eyes that gazed at her from behind the strange mask reflected her same horror and fear. The wide cheekbones, the dark slash of her brows, the narrow bridge of her nose, mirrored hers in exact detail, and for a moment Coira thought she gazed at her own image.
With a twisting movement, the woman tried to break free of the stone, her chest heaving in and out as she attempted to breathe. Coira’s eyes stung with tears of pity. She could not stand aside and watch her die. She had to pull her free. Coira reached up to grasp the hand extended toward her.
“Nay!” Braden bellowed.
A current passed through Coira’s fingers, and a force, invisible but strong, looped around her wrist like a rope and pulled. Fear lanced through her, bone deep. She braced her feet and leaned back, fighting against the power that sucked her forward against her will. As she looked up, the hand above her reached out like a black claw to grab her.

I’m originally from Kentucky, but my duty station is out of Coronado right now. That probably tells you things I can’t. I’ve been deployed for the last ten months to places you won’t ever want to vacation to.
Being deployed for long stretches of time really sucks. It isn’t the absence of amenities that’s the biggest challenge, though not having access to a shower now and then is one of the worst things. And missing out on home cooked meals is another, because MREs leave a lot to be desired, though they do keep you going. But being away from the people who mean the most to you— that’s the hardest.  Especially when they need you and you aren’t there. Me and the other guys experience a lot of guilt because we’re too far away to lend anything but vocal support when shit hits the fan at home. If we’re told when it hits the fan. Sometimes our families hold back things to keep us from worrying.
So you can image how fucking guilty I felt when I got word that someone had blown up my fiancée’s car. Thank God Tess wasn’t in it, though she could have been. The only good thing that came out of it was I was invited home by homeland security and the powers that be decided they’d comply so I got to bug out and fly home to be with her. Great timing, because our wedding is scheduled to take place in a few weeks. I was beginning to doubt I was going to make it.
Just occupying the same space with Tess after so long was fucking amazing. I couldn’t seem to stop looking at her, touching her. Being deployed has given me some time to think about how I want our marriage to work. Because once we’re married, she’ll have to put up with a lot of shit. Mainly my being gone so much of the time.
She’s already put up with my being gone for ten months with only infrequent phone calls. She’s earned a little TLC so I’m going to do whatever I can to make her happy. As long as those things don’t conflict with what Uncle Sam needs from me.
Because being who I am and what I am, it’s a calling. And I’ve signed a contract saying I’m willing to lay down my life to protect and defend my country. My obligation to the good ol’ USA has to come first. Tess knows that, even though sometimes accepting it is tough.
And we’ll have a few weeks to take care of the asshole who blew up her car. Between the two of us we’ll figure it out and he’ll wish he hadn’t messed with my Tess.
