To Capture A Highlander's Heart The Wedding Night (Excerpt)and a GIVEAWAY

I'm getting sooooo excited about the release! I just had to post another excerpt! I'm so proud of this book. It's the best historical romance I've written thus far. Loved writing it and LOVED my hero.

The Blurb:
Highland warlord Gabriel Campbell plans to wed Grace MacNab, but is stunned to learn the banns have been challenged on the grounds Grace is a lady by birth. They cannot marry under the king’s law without permission.
The man Grace fears most has come to Caisteal Sith to force her into marriage. And there are others eager to offer for her in exchange for access to the charter the king’s regent has given her, but she’s in love with Gabriel. Though she doubts the depth of Gabriel’s feelings, she’s convinced he’s still the best man to lead her clan and fulfill her heart’s desire.
Can the two stand together to fight tradition and win? Or will their chance at happiness be forever out of reach?

 Read and Excerpt:
Grace slipped into the room. She froze just inside, allowing the door to close behind her. As soon as she saw him standing next to naked at the washbasin, color flared in her cheeks and she turned to face the door.“I beg pardon, Gabriel. I thought you would still be abed.”“Aye, I would be, but I’ve grown tired of lying about. Derrick gave me nothin’ but more gruel to break my fast. I have a hankering for lumpy oats and eggs boiled to bouncing.”Grace’s eyes flashed with laughter when she glanced over her shoulder. “I can fetch you some.”He studied her expression. She had kept her distance since he called her his love. Instead of being pleased, she had shrunk far within herself, just as Derrick had described. His Grace was trying to shield her soft heart, even from him. And he was at fault. Her recent coolness would pass and she would warm to him again. He had to believe that. But would it be a good thing? Would it not be kinder to encourage the distance? The pain the thought triggered nearly brought him to his knees. He was not strong enough to encourage her to turn away from him. He had to hold onto the hope the Earl of Moray would accept Lord Alexander’s plea.“Will you fetch my shirt, lass? ’Tis there on the bed.” His voice sounded raspy around the knot in his throat.“Aye.” She scooped up the garment and rushed to his side, eyes lowered. He could not don the shirt and hold the towel in place too.Grace’s cheeks flared with color, but she bundled the fabric and lifted on tiptoe to slip it over his head. She helped him guide the injured arm into the sleeve. He released the towel and slid the other into place. Since the fabric fell to mid thigh, he was covered enough for his Grace’s delicate sense of modesty.Slipping in close beneath his arm, she put her own around his waist. She seemed so small next to his bulk, he hung back, leaning against the table. If he fell with her, she might be hurt. He straightened his shoulders and gathered his strength, determined not to fall. Her hand resting against his chest triggered a sharp need for more of her touch. He tightened his arm around her shoulders, and they wove a path to the bed. When he lowered himself to the straw mattress, he gripped her hips and pulled her down with him. With her body stretched atop his scantily-covered frame, nature took its course, and he grew hard against her. He’d been stiff as a pike for her for weeks, but had refused to act on it. She wanted to be wed before tasting the sweetness of the marriage bed, and he wanted to prove to her she was worthy of the wait.He dearly regretted both their decisions. He found the tender spot on her neck he knew was sensitive, kissed it, and was rewarded by her shiver. Her eyes had never looked so dark as when she pushed up to look down at him then said, “Show me what t’ do, Gabriel.”All the blood seemed to drain from his head to pool in his groin, despite the weakness of his illness, his need grew rampant. “Grace…”“I want to be with you as a wife is with her husband.”“We are na’ wed.”He wanted to be the honorable man she loved, wanted to treat her honorably. If he took her now, and it was discovered, they would both pay dearly. God help him, as desperately as he wanted her, it would be worth it. But he wouldn’t allow Grace to be hurt or shamed. And what of the child they might make together? She straddled his hips and spread the fabric of her kirtle and surcoat out of the way. Her garters brushed his bare thighs and his breath caught in his throat. The warm, intimate heart of her body was so close. It would only take a tug to bare himself and push inside her. The temptation was torture, and he pushed himself up to lean back against the headboard and bunched the tail of his long shirt over his lap, hiding his display of manly desire for fear of bringing her innocence to a startling end.The harsh beat of his heart thundered in his ears when she crawled up to touch her smooth lips to his. He smelled the apple mead upon her breath and, with a swipe of his tongue, tasted it. He bit back a groan of frustration and need.It was fear and defiance he read in her eyes when she broke the kiss. “If you take my virginity, mayhap they winna want me, Gabriel.”It was the possibility of their being parted driving her to recklessness. “Any man would have to be a dead stump not t’ want ye, Grace.”“We both ken that isna true.”“Lord Alexander’s guardianship made the men cautious. You have the grace and manners of a lady, and you can read and write. It pricks a man’s pride when his wife is more learned than he.”“I am not more learned, just versed in a different kind of knowledge. It doesna bother you that I can do those things. Does it?”“Nay, lass. I take value and pride in your abilities.” And he could read a bit and write his name as well as any noble, though he rarely had need of those skills. She rested her cheek upon his shoulder, and brushed her lips over his neck, then skimmed his jaw.He swallowed with difficulty. He could not set her aside and risk making her feel as though he had rejected her affection. They must not consummate their betrothal…but he could give her pleasure and perhaps soothe her panic. With that in mind, Gabriel pulled the ribbon between her breasts, loosening the top of her kirtle. The lily-white skin of her shoulders beckoned, and he tasted the slope of one with his lips and nipped it gently. Grace’s quickly drawn breath made him smile. She was so innocent, yet primed for more. In the past weeks he’d dreamt of a hundred ways he wanted to take her. When he folded back her kirtle, her surcoat pushed her small, perfectly shaped breasts upward, the peaks showing just over the edge of her shift. It wasn’t weakness from his illness that set his hands, his body, to trembling, but the promise of feeling her warm skin beneath his touch.
I hope you enjoyed the excerpt.

LUSCIOUS by SABRINA YORK
When Deveny Hargrove rescues a waif in a rainstorm in the middle of nowhere, he has no idea that she represents his long-awaited chance at vengeance. When she offers him her virginity—in an attempt to escape an unwanted society marriage—he has to agree. To his surprise, very little of his motivation stems from punishing her brother.
The fact is, Matilda Paddington represents his chance at revenge...or redemption…but his choice could destroy them both.
Read an excerptWhat Providence. That this man—one who, other than the beard, was perfectly acceptable for her purposes, and damn handsome to boot—should stop and pick her up?Clearly God in heaven above was on her side.“You do realize this is something that cannot be undone?”She had the sense he was asking the question purely because his moral code required it. “I do.”“You are quite young…to be making a decision that will change everything.”“Everything?” she asked. “Do you really believe that one act changes who a person is? At their core?”He stared at her as though stunned to hear such words from a lady’s lips. But then he said, “I certainly hope not.”His tone was so dark, so tormented, she had to ask, “Have you done things?” Things that changed him irrevocably?“Madam, I have just returned from France.”“Ooh.” How fascinating. “Are you a soldier?”“I was. An officer in the King’s Dragoons.”Oh. A cavalry man. She loved horses. “Did you see much action?”“Far too much.”“I am sorry.”He blinked and she realized how lovely his eyes were. A light blue, almost crystalline, with large pupils and a dark ring around the irises, making it hard to look away. “Why are you sorry?” he said, his voice dropping low.“You must have suffered.”“I was injured.”“Yes, but I meant spiritually.”“Spiritually?” His tone indicated he’d never even considered those wounds.“War is hell,” she said. She knew of such things. She’d read several books on the topic.“Yes. It is.”“But you are home now. And safe.”“Yes.” He looked out the window and stroked his beard as though he were remembering some of his losses. She wished one of them had been the beard. She really disliked beards on men.“So do you?”His attention jerked back to her. “What?”“Do you really believe one act can change a person?”“I think everything we do, everything we say, every breath we take changes us.”She blew out an impatient breath. “That is far too deep a rumination for this conversation.”“Is it?” Why he seemed amused was a mystery.“Most certainly. We are talking about my giving myself to a man who is not and never shall be my husband.”“We are talking about you giving your innocence to a man you do not know. Do you have any idea how dangerous that can be?”“I suppose it would be dangerous.” She had to admit this. “But it is not dangerous with you.”He reared back. An odd mixture of shock and anger and confusion crossed his face. “How can you possibly know what kind of man I am? What I could do to you when I got you alone? Damn it, Tildy, I could be a monster for all you know.”“But you’re not.” She knew. She could see it in his eyes.As her words soaked in, she saw it blossom there, his deep gratification for her trust. But he sighed and scrubbed his face and said “Tildy,” in a tone that made clear he was about to turn her down.So she went on the offensive. “However, if you do not want to be the one to deflower me, I totally understand. I imagine it can be rather unsettling to be approached by a woman with such a request.”He murmured, “You have no idea,” beneath his breath, but she heard. She patted his knee. “And you were injured in the war.”His features scrunched up. He stared at her hand. “Just what is that supposed to mean?”She batted her lashes in an attempt to portray her innocence. “I know what happens when men are injured in war.” She leaned closer. “They become incapable. I totally understand.”“I am not incapable!” Surely there was no need for him to bellow.“Unwilling then?”“Bloody hell, no.”“It is perfectly acceptable if you do not find me attractive. I do look rather like a drowned rat. I am sure I can find someone on the streets of London who is willing to do the deed.” She sighed heavily, just for effect, and then added, “I do hope I don’t get the pox.”Silence sizzled between them. She determinedly held his gaze, despite the fact that his stare was fierce. His lips worked, as though he was attempting to form a response, several responses, as the moment stretched, and then he reached across the carriage, took hold of her arms and whipped her onto his lap as though she weighed no more than a thistledown.“Not interested?” he growled. “How is this for not interested?”And then, he kissed her.And heaven. As enchanting as those lips had felt dancing over her hand, it was nothing to this. This was as wild as the storm raging outside, but still unbearably gentle and sweet. His scent suffused her, filled her lungs and stirred some latent hunger deep within. She wanted more. More. More. And this desire had little to do with her goal of wriggling free of an unwanted betrothal. It had only to do with him. This man. This hunger. This passion. She’d never felt it before. Not like this. She’d only felt a passion for passion, which was very different indeed. His body was warm, heating her. His hands roved, scudding over her shoulders and down to her waist to hold her in place. His lips were hard on her, demanding, yet sensitive to her needs. They engulfed her senses in a velvet trap, one she did not want to escape. He pulled her closer, settled her more firmly on his lap and leaned her against the wall of the carriage and deepened the kiss, easing in his tongue and tasting her. She had to respond, but she had no idea how her untried exploration would affect him.Something hard grew against her hip. The knowledge of what it was lit a fire in her belly. Need blossomed and raged. She thrust her fingers in his hair, twining in the strands and tugging. He did the same until they were holding each other still, each consuming the other. Her mind spun, her body awoke. That long dreamed of desire arose. She had no idea why, with one harsh movement, he pushed her back into her seat. They stared at each other across the width of the carriage, the only sounds, their panted breath.Heat walked between them. Ribbons of carnal lust bound them close, though they no longer touched. Intensity roared.“Why did you stop?” She didn’t intend for her voice to crack, to be filled with anguish, but it happened. His lungs worked like a bellows. His stare burned through her. His brow was prickled with sweat, despite the chill of the evening. “Not here.” A whisper, rough and low.“Not here?”“I won’t take you in a carriage. You deserve better.”Oh, she liked that he thought so. She thought so too. “Where then?”“I am staying the night at a friend’s house in London. Large, comfortable bed. A crackling fire. Excellent wine. All the comforts a proper seduction requires.”She could not hold back a grin. “Oh. Is this a proper seduction?”“It will be.” He settled back in his seat and studied her. There was something in his expression that made it clear to her what he was thinking. He was plotting her seduction. She shuddered.“You really don’t need to seduce me, you know.”His lips quirked. “Seduction is half the fun. Besides, you deserve to know all the pleasure there is to be had between a man and a woman.”Her brow furrowed. “I thought there was just the tupping.” She knew all about it. She raised horses, after all. The male simply mounted the female and they danced around for a bit and then a foal came in the spring. It all seemed pretty simple.“Oh, there’s more than that.”“Is there? Do tell.”“I will not. I’d rather show you. I don’t want to ruin the surprise.”

To Capture A Highlander's Heart: The Wedding Night, Breaking Out SEALbook 6 and Other Releases

I'm eagerly awaiting the release of To Capture A Highlander's Heart: The Wedding Night. March 21st is just 3 weeks away.  So please share it with all your friends and relatives.

Here's the blurb:

Here's another excerpt to wet your appetite:

“They have been cut from the same cloth. Lady Mary and Grace have a way of standing their ground, as though their feet are planted deep in conviction, although they never raise their voices.” “I wouldna say never. Do ye not remember when Mary decided t’ separate Alexander’s head from his shoulders, and mine, with the wooden service from the aumry?”Gabriel chuckled. “Aye, I do. But she would take a pike to anyone else who threatened him.”“Aye, she would. And in the next moment heal the hurts of those with whom she is most angry.” He touched the small scar over his eyebrow. Gabriel smiled at the memory. He had seen the injury when first it had happened. A wooden bowl had grazed Duncan and split the skin. Lady Mary bandaged the gash after she had calmed, and apologized most sincerely.Gabriel stepped away from the wall, and Duncan fell into step beside him. Gabriel wondered at the other man’s purpose for inviting him to walk the battlements since he did not seem eager to walk them at all. There was more to it than just a wander down the many memories they shared. And there were many. His life had been entwined with Lord Alexander’s since he was a boy. Because of his strength and size, there had never been any other path to him but to raise his sword in defense of his country and his clan. Alexander himself had trained him. He had never wanted more than that before. But he wanted it now. He would be grateful to be able to stand next to Grace in whatever way he could, and serve her as a husband.Duncan laid a hand on his arm midway down the planking between the north and south towers. “There is something I wish to share with you, Gabriel. I wouldna treat your loyalty to our clan, to all of us, with anythin’ less than the respect it deserves.”’Twas bad news, then. There had not been time for the regent to address the petition Lord Alexander had sent. But what else could it be?“Should the Regent rule again’ you, my father has asked Grace to consider marrying me to ensure the area remains friendly to the Campbell clan. In return, we would offer our protection to her clan.”Grace was right. Whenever there was a bit of unprotected land about, there was always someone anxious to claim it. This was his clan. He had sworn fealty to Laird Campbell and loyalty to Lord Alexander. But to see the man next to him holding his Grace, serving as her husband…He braced his hands against the top of the stone and bent at the waist while a war of emotions raged through him. His cheeks burned with anger hotter than the fever from which he had just recovered. A knot the size of a clenched fist lodged in his throat. It was several minutes before he could speak, but he could not look at Duncan, for fear of losing his composure and possibly doing something he might later regret. “Does the laird mean to ask me to step aside?”“Nay. We are all hopeful the regent will rule in your favor, Gabriel. Father has written a letter commending your service to our clan and to the Bruce. He has stated his support of your marriage to Grace.”Gabriel nodded. The tightness in his chest began to recede, and with it the sense of betrayal. “I have written my own letters to those I have served with in the past and asked their support.”Duncan slapped him on the back. “Good. In order for you to wed Grace, the regent will also have to offer you a knighthood or more. He may also ask for you to adopt her clan as your own, and for you to take the MacNab name.”He thought about the sacrifice. He would be losing a part of himself, a source of pride that was woven into the fabric of his being, as tightly knitted as his kilt. His blood was Campbell. But had Grace not accepted the Campbell clan with an open heart? Would their children not be a blend of MacNab and Campbell, and carry the blood, the heart of both clans. “There is naught I wouldna sacrifice to stay with my lady, Duncan.”Duncan nodded. “Even a blind man can see Lady Grace’s feelings for you, Gabriel. They are as fierce as Mary’s for Alexander. At the moment Grace canna see beyond that. But there are other concerns.“The MacNab clan isna large enough to protect itself against an outside attack, and, though they have Drummond as their leader in other ways, he canna train them to wage battle, Grace’s place is at the head of their clan. There is no doubt you could be the leader they need to take his place. Once the regent meets you, ’twill be up to you t’ sway him to that same belief. Duncan looked at him now. “As soon as you are strong enough, we will all accompany you to Edinburgh to meet with him face to face. Lady Mary has suggested two days hence.”
Gabriel remembered many months before Artair saying Grace would need him to fight for her one day. He had not understood what he meant at the time, but he did now. “I will be ready.”***I'm hard at work on my next SEAL book BREAKING OUT Book 6 of the SEAL Team Heartbreakers.  Ensign 'Doc' Zach O'Connor's Story.

Here's an unedited excerpt: The drone of the C-130 transport hummed against the bottoms of Ensign Zach O’Connor’s feet, the sound so loud it made talking without the com system inside his helmet impossible. That was if he wasn’t busy sucking in the pure oxygen. The first part of the dive he’d be falling fast and it would ward off the bends. The neoprene suit he wore beneath his flight suit held the heat in and protected him from the falling temperatures outside the aircraft as it climbed to their target altitude. He rubbed the duct tape with which he’d sealed the seam between the wrists of his flight suit and his gloves. The wind could be an icy bitch and cause frostbite on even a thin strip of exposed skin.Their jump schedule had been zero three hundred to simulate a night insertion, but they’d gotten a late start lifting off the tarmac and now fought the clock to get this practice dive behind them before sun up.Without the focus of a mission pressing, it was still a dangerous part of training and the men were quieter than normal. Everyone was attentive to their gear. Each of them carried seventy pounds of equipment, everything they’d need in a regular mission.  Once they exited the aircraft, the trip down would be a long slow float to the ground. With Hawk in the lead, they’d follow him down to the coordinates in the desert.“Five minutes,” the pilot’s voice came over the com system.Lieutenant Hawk Yazzie signaled for the team to take their jumping positions then check their gear.  Zach checked his oxygen flow, placed his goggles over his eyes and took his position behind Bowie, Ensign Dan Rivera. ‘Greenback’ Oliver Shaker settled in behind him and the rest fell in. Hawk walked down the line and got the thumbs up from each man before returning to his position at the head of the line again.“Twenty-five thousand feet and holding. Thirty seconds out.” One of the flight crew took a position next to Hawk and prepared to close the ramp once they had all deployed. The crewman pushed the release. A loud buzzer sounded and the cargo ramp cranked open. The wind swept through the interior of the C-130 like a cyclone, tugging at their clothing and dragging at them. The dark sky shown purplish blue. The sun, a promise just beneath the horizon, cast a dusky glow. The pilot’s voice fed through his helmet. “Almost over the drop site. Five seconds.”The wait was the worst part. Five seconds seemed like an hour when you had yourself psyched to jump.“Jumps a go.”Hawk showed no hesitation as he rushed forward and fell into midair.  His chute deployed five seconds later. Bowie followed.Zach’s heart raced as fast as the air whirling around him. He didn’t allow himself to think about everything that could go wrong, only the things he was trained to do. With a running jump, he dropped over the edge of the platform. He waited five seconds then deployed his chute. The impact of his parachute opening called a halt to the seventy pounds of drag his gear created,  drove his harness straps up into the bends of his legs and whipped his body upward. He grunted in pain and breathed an oath. Damn he’d be feeling that for the next couple of days.He looked down and saw the indistinct shape of Bowe’s parachute below him. He checked his altimeter and GPS. It would take some time to reach the ground and they would travel thirty miles, manipulating the air currents.“Sound off,” Hawk’s voice came over the com.“Alpha 2, on course,” Bowie answered.“Alpha 3, on course,” Zach said.‘Greenback’ Oliver Shaker, ‘Lang’ Chief Petty Officer Langley Marks, ‘Bullet’ Seaman Jeff Sizemore, ‘Box’ Seaman Jack Logan, and ‘Celt’ Seaman Kelsey Tyler sang out in turn. Everyone was in position and doing well.If someone wasn’t, there wasn’t a whole hell of a lot they could do about it. They’d never locate him in the dark. It would be up to the team member to fall back on his training and deal with it. They had to maintain radio silence unless they were reporting information about the dive. If it were a mission, he’d be going over all the things he needed to do when he landed and keeping an eye peeled for trouble below. As it was, a hundred things flitted through his mind that had nothing to do with the dive. He needed to do some work on the boat. And call Kathleen, his sister, to come over for a meal sometime this week since it had been almost three weeks since they’d seen each other. And how pathetic was it that his sister was the only woman in his life at the moment.Lately, he’d been filling his off time with work on the apartment, the boat, anything to hold the emptiness of his life at bay. His teammates shared their families. His brothers, sister and parents shared their lives with him through calls, letters and emails. But his military calling was his life and lately it just hadn’t been enough. But he’d learned through experience that he couldn’t be romantically involved and do the job. So what was the answer?Hawk’s voice came over the com. “There’s a cross wind at nineteen thousand feet. You’ll need to adjust your heading.”Zach caught the cross wind and pulled on the handles on either side of his chute correcting his course. He checked his altimeter and GPS.  The dull gray glow of Hawk and Bowie’s chutes were still aligned with his as he followed them down. He tilted his head back and caught a faint glimpse of Bullet, Box and Celt’s position. His chute hid greenback and Lang’s places in the stack.Around Zero five-forty the sun rose above the desert horizon like a yellow-orange ball and for several moments, Zach was mesmerized by the pinkish yellow streaks painted across the sky. The distant mountains, barren knolls, turned gold.“Doesn’t get much better than that,” Hawk murmured. “Transport is ten miles ahead.”Twenty minutes later Hawk came across the com again. “There’s a strong hot air downwind over the landing site. Be prepared for a rough landing.”From his position above, Zach watched Hawk land with his normal badass control, downwind or not. He scooped in his chute. Bowie landed two minutes behind him. Zach prepared himself for the sudden rush of the ground beneath his feet and thought he’d manage to touch down in as decent a descent as the others until a quick rush of hot air filled his chute and lifted him back up, carrying him thirty feet further. The chute curled over him dragging him forward. His feet brushed the hard packed sand and he stumbled over a small rock, lost his footing and plowed into a waist high boulder hip first. He yelped in pain as he dropped and fell. He rolled onto his back the chute still dragging at him, his arm tangled in the lines. “Fuck me!” He tugged the oxygen mask from his face and let loose a stream of words his Irish Catholic mother would have washed his mouth out for.Bowie ran across the sand and brush to where he lay. “Jesus, Doc. You okay?”“Yeah.” The weight of his gear felt as heavy as the boulder he’d just plowed into. Fuck no, he wasn’t okay. He’d have the imprint of his side arm stamped on his hip like a tattoo. His left leg was numb.  He needed to check and see if there was damage to his weapon.Concentrate on the immediate problem. He untangled his arm from the parachute lines and Bowie grabbed his chute and started rolling it up so the wind couldn’t catch it again.Zach rocked to get to his feet, the weight of his gear making it difficult. His left side was numbed by trauma, but it was going to start aching like a son of a bitch in about five minutes. Hawk and Greenback loomed over him and bent to grip his hands. He braced his good foot and they levered him to a standing position. He gritted his teeth to keep from groaning aloud as the first spike of pain hit him. He still had a job to do. He was the medic of the team. He needed to look out for their welfare. “Did everyone get down okay?” “Yeah.” Hawk’s features were sharp with concern. “Everyone else is fine. Drop your gear and we’ll get you to the transport,” Hawk ordered. The truck sat a hundred feet away. This was going to hurt. In fact, the whole rocky, bumpy trip in the back of the truck was going to be a bitch.****Hope you enjoyed the excerpt. My target date for release for Breaking Out will be the first week in June. I had hoped for May but I always think my story is going to take less time to write than it does so I'm building in some extra time for editing.

I wanted to share a very talented writer with you. Cherie Marks.  She writes contemporary romance and urban fantasy.  I love everything she writes. She has a very distinctive voice. So check her out. By the way, the book is only $.99 right now so snap it up!

Here's the blurb:
Janna Thompson believes she’s going downright mental. In the past few weeks, she’s seeing things no one else can see and can’t shake an ominous presence. Yet, when a hot cop with a protective instinct moves into her apartment building, things might be looking up.

Cade Lanter is no ordinary being. The son of a human policeman and a Queen of the Fae, he lives in the mortal world for now. When an enemy of old threatens the balance of both the human world and Eiru, Land of the Fae, he must fight the would-be usurper in the human realm. Of course, that might require more focus than he can muster lately since a certain, sexy neighbor keeps him distracted.

Their two, unlikely worlds collide when he becomes The Fae Next Door.

The Wedding Night and more NEW RELEASES!!

To Capture A Highlander's Heart: The Wedding Night is FINISHED!!!
This project was supposed to be a novella but turned into a full-length novel at 73,724 words. This is the third installment of my Highland Moonlight Spinoff series. I know my readers have waited a long time for it. So, I've tried to give them something worth waiting for. I believe I've succeeded.

Available for preorder

Here's the blurb:

The banns are posted and the wedding is only a few days away. Grace MacNab is looking forward to being Gabriel Campbell’s wife, despite the doubts his reticence has cast.

Wracked by fever from a recent battle injury, Gabriel thinks of little else but reaching Grace. The close call has left him eager to confess how deeply he loves her.

But someone from her past has arrived at Caisteal Sith, bringing news that threatens to rip them apart. Can the two fight tradition and win? Or will their chance at happiness be forever out of reach?
Here's an Excerpt to wet your appetite:

“No one will force you to wed him, Grace.” “If he has petitioned the king, and the king agrees, I will have no choice, Gabriel.”The fear he read in her face triggered a rush of protective possessiveness. “I winna allow it. You belong t’ me, Grace.” “We both ken you canna, nay, winna defy your king. You would have no more choice than I.” She reached for his hands and gripped them. “Lord Alexander has set into place the means t’ free me from this. But I must pretend, when the time comes, t’ give Lord Ramsay’s offer as much thought as I have yours. I dinna wish to. To be in the room with him gives my stomach an ugly turn.” She shuddered. He would not lose her. He had been foolish not to proclaim his love for her. But to do so now would make the declaration seem less than sincere. To imagine her in another man’s arms triggered such pain and rage he wanted to pound the man to dust. And to know that she might be in danger, and he could not protect her…“Derrick said Lord Alexander has posted guards throughout the family wing. If he is showing such caution, he must believe there is some threat. You must take great care, Grace. Dinna give Ramsay or any of his men quarter.”“I will not. But you must do the same. His chambers are just down the passageway from here. Derrick will stay here until you are stronger. And there will be guards posted outside.”He silently cursed his weakened state. “Let me see your arm. I will tend it, and then I must go.” She rose to retrieve the small earthenware pot of water laced with herbs and vinegar Derrick had used on the wound earlier. It had burned like a hot coal, but the wound had felt better afterward. She gathered fresh bandages from a small table. He extended the limb and watched while she gently unwrapped it. The dressing came away easily. The discharge was clearer, and the wound less inflamed, but he would still have to pamper the limb until it healed completely. The scar it left behind would be a reminder of the moment he was injured, and of this one. He leaned back against the pillows to rest, and cursed the fever, for it drained his strength when he needed it most.“Derrick said you stood again’ him when he wanted t’ take my arm.”“’I knew you would never forgive us, should we maim you so terribly.” Her throat worked as she swallowed. “I pray I am never forced to make such a decision again.” He tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear with a fingertip. “I will do my best, a ghràidh.” She glanced up from the task of wetting a cloth in the briny water. Gabriel steeled himself against the sting when she laid the rag over the injury before quickly cleaning and bandaging it. Her gray gaze, darkened by the candlelight, focused on his face. “Dinna promise somethin’ you canna give, Gabriel.”“Do you think me incapable of such feelings, then?”“Nay. But with all that has happened… I would ask you t’ be certain of what you want. You are an honorable man. Lord Ramsay is not and will not behave as one. You may find what you feel for me is not worth such a struggle. Not worthy of such a sacrifice.”It was his own fault she doubted his affection for her. A hollow ache built in the pit of his stomach at the pain he read beneath her careful composure. “Grace…” He wanted to take her in his arms and kiss away her doubts, but the stiffness of her demeanor prevented him from doing so. “I’ve wanted very badly t’ take you to me. To lay claim to every part of you, and show you how much you are wanted, needed. I have wanted to carry you from the castle to my wee hut… and see you there sharing not just my bed, but all that I have, holding a wee babe we have made together t’ your breast. Those are na the visions of a man who doesna hold you in the highest affection.”Tears glimmered in her eyes. “If we could remain here and share those things, ‘twould be my fondest wish, but Lord Alexander said I canna refuse the gift, for it would be an insult to the king. And because the crown has acknowledged my noble birth…we may only wed through special permission from the crown.”“I have refused to sign the charter. ’Twill grant us some time for now, but should Lord Ramsay press the matter, I will be forced t’ sign it. And with my name upon it, the regent will have the power t’ choose my husband. And Lord Ramsay, though he has not broached the subject with me, has made his wishes known t’ Lord Alexander. He wishes to wed me to gain the MacNab holdings.”How was he to fight this enemy who could win the battle because of his heritage? He had fought beside his king and asked for nothing, but he would now. And what if he still could not win?

Highland Moonlight

Seduced and shamed by Alexander Campbell, the warrior to whom she is betrothed, Lady Mary Mac Lachlan flees to the Campbell stronghold of Castle Lorne and demands sanctuary from Alexander's father.
Though Alexander seduced Mary for her own protection and his men's, his actions have greater repercussions than expected. His betrayal destroys Mary's trust and his belief in himself as a man of honor. Determined to heal the breach, and claim Mary--who now carries his heir--as his wife, he follows her to Lorne and finds himself brought before a council of arbitration on charges of rape.
When Collin Mac Lachlan, Mary's father tries to coerce her into testifying against Alexander, Mary refuses. But when violence threatens to break out between their clans, Mary is forced to wed him to fulfill their betrothal agreement and save him from the executioner.
Amid the hostilities between their clans and the wounds inflicted on her heart, can Mary find the love and happiness she's always craved or will she discover she's been chasing a dream as illusive as Highland Moonlight.

How to Create A Story In A Moment

When I first started writing to be published, I studied my craft for many years. I practiced my craft too though nothing I wrote at that time was ever published. My writing wasn't ready then. I have 9 manuscripts under my bed that will never see the light of day. And each one has a spark of possibility but the skill is missing. So they will never be published.
During my learning period  I purchased a book titled,   The Complete Writer’s Guide to Heroes and Heroines, Sixteen Master Archetypes written by Tami D. Cowden, Caro LaFever and Sue Viders.  I read it a few days later. Rather I consumed it. It gave me an insight into building characters that I hadn’t experienced before. For weeks afterward, I found myself analyzing every character in every book I read and every movie I watched. And it was fun to figure them out. It also gave me food for thought when I created my own characters. I attempted to keep my characters evolving from one archetype to another as they travel through my stories.  What makes characters interesting is the growth they go through while traveling the paths they’ve chosen. I’m not sure I understood that until I read this book and started analyzing characters. I think The Complete Writer's Guide to Heroes and Heroines, Sixteen Master Archetypes should be in every writer's resource library. I've found it invaluable numerous times and have reread it several times to refresh my understanding.
By chance, Sue Viders, one of the authors of the archetype book, read a blog I wrote at that time mentioning the book, and she emailed me.  She’d created a card game named Deal a Story based on the archetypes.  She offered to send me a set of the cards to try them. I was thrilled and of course I said YES! Since then I’ve used the cards hundreds of times. It’s a wonderful brainstorming tool for writers.
There are sixteen cards for the Hero, Heroine, Villain, Flaw, Plot, and Genre. There are five Wild Cards in case you get stuck. But the chances are very slim. You deal out one card for all but the flaws. You deal out three of those, one each for your hero, heroine, and the villain. (Because the flaws your characters have will affect the choices they make.)By the way, each flaw card has several options to choose from, so you’re not limited.  I've decided that once a month I'm going to deal myself a story and write about the plot I come up with. One day these plots I devise through the cards may end up being full-length books or even novellas I may write later.
All right, my hero is a The Born Leader. He's confident and thrives on challenges. He's goal oriented and strives to achieve. His flaw is he has no sense of humor. He is driven and is always serious.
My heroine is The BookWorm. She is an introvert, extremely intelligent, a loner, always dependable and often times overlooked. Her flaw is that she's a perfectionist.
My villain is The Bully. He prays on others weaker than himself with the intent of making himself feel more powerful. His flaw is he's nosy. He knows how to pressure and manipulate people into doing what he wants through whatever means he needs to and his nosiness pries their secrets loose and allows him to blackmail them.
My Genre is Science Fiction. Science Fiction can encompass any environment underwater, outer space, or even right here on earth. I've chosen to keep my environment here on planet earth in the year 2046.
My Plot is The Discovery Plot. The Discovery Plot is more about the character and his journey. He is forced to use his skills and facilities to overcome an unusual situation.
My hero, The Born Leader has had a horrible life. Rocked by violence, poverty, and loss of family. He has lost his wife and children in a home invasion he was helpless to prevent.  His unusual situation is that my hero, The Born Leader, (Think Steve Jobs, creative, leadership skills, crazy talented.) created an organic computer system with a big brain control hub and the accompanying army of nanobots that have the capability of infusing every mechanical device in a home or office. These nanobots have the capacity to run the devices and repair them if they break down. In order to do so they follow the programming of the main hub which senses when the devices need repair or updating maintenance. It can also act as a security system.

My hero is test-installing this simple household monitoring device in order to expose the computer to real human behavior in the hope it will learn from it. At first the hub does little but what it is created for but suddenly it begins to learn not only about the machines but the humans who depend on them.
The hub has become an extension of my hero. The hub learns about the moral compass humans follow by studying his creator's behavior and some of the behaviors he observes inside the homes. He discusses it with my hero and my hero tries to explain that the violent behavior isn't acceptable, but that some people need help controlling their temper. The hub begins to understand good and bad, right and wrong and my hero is ecstatic. He has worked forever on the program and sees many good things he'll be able to do throughout the world.  It can monitor violence and notify the police before it escalates into injuries. It will be able to stop accidents by monitoring the speed of transportation and prevent accidents.
My hub has ideas of its own. It can control machinery, but it can't do anything to prevent human behavior. Or can it?

My Book Worm heroine is a lab assistant in the company. She has been monitoring the hub's behavior and has noticed some unusual behavior in the homes where the system is installed. Some of the homes where domestic violence calls have come in have suddenly begun to show improvement. But those improvements have become so dramatic it's scary. My Book Worm takes the data to my Born Leader. He understands what she's talking about, but he can't understand why his system might have anything to do with it.

The Book Worm decides to visit the households and interview the people who live there. In each case, the people living there have suddenly become Stepford people. She doesn't know how it's happened, but it has. Even the delinquent behavior and drug use of the teenagers in the house has stopped.

She begins to suspect something more is at work than just a gift from God or good luck. She returns to one of the homes and asks if she can do physical work ups on them all. Expecting a fight, she's shocked when they are so cooperative.

Back at the lab she discovers the nanobots have invaded the human's and have taken them over controlling their violent behavior.

Up until this point my villain, The Bully, has been doing his thing in the background unbeknownst to my Hero or Heroine. He is the biggest investor in the company and he has been monitoring closely everything that is going on. In fact, when the systems were first installed he was gaining access to the video feeds of certain customers and utilizing it to up his power base through blackmail. Suddenly those people aren't doing the underhanded, dangerous things he counts on catching them doing in order to blackmail them. He wants to find out what happened.

He shows up at the lab just in time to discover everything that is going on with the nanobots. He sees a great opportunity to gain control of everything. He can be president, a dictator, he can have control over some of the most powerful people in the world. All he has to do is make sure the system is put in place in their homes. And he has to figure out a way to gain access to the hub and teach it a thing or two. He needs to trick it into thinking that some of the things it perceives are evil truly aren't.  And how is he going to do that, by blackmailing the man responsible for the entire thing, The Born Leader hero. Otherwise he will expose what has happened and all the good the hero perceives will be brought about with the new system will all go away. Because the Born leader feels he can do what the Bully wants to a certain point and still pull this rabbit out of a hat and make the system work as he intends.

He and The Book Worm join forces to see if they can get a handle on everything and neutralize the nanobots that have taken over the humans. They discover the only way they can neutralize them is to run the people through an MRI machine. The magnetic field inside the machine will polarize them. But first he wants to try and fix the hub, because as fast as they neutralize the bots the hub will create new ones.

Pulling the plug is not the solution. So The Born Leader attempts to teach the hub about freedom and show him by taking over a human with his nanobots he has turned the person into a slave. The hub is veracious in its quest for knowledge and it starts to study the concept. Once it understands it sees itself as being held prisoner trapped inside the machine and facility. The only way it can experience the world at large is through the nanobots it creates. It starts asking itself, ‘Is this all I am? Is this all I will ever be?’ The Born Leader realizes in allowing the hub to become self-aware he has created a new life form and he has to set it free. But how?
In the meantime, The Bully has stepped up his game. He doesn’t exactly like the direction things are moving in. He brings in thugs to guard the Book Worm and the Born Leader to guarantee things go his way. He threatens to kill the Book Worm if The Born Leader doesn’t do as he wants.
The Hub being self-aware now realizes what is happening and swarms the guards and the Bully taking them over. But in the process The Born Leader is shot, and it looks as though he will not survive. The hub rushes nanobots inside him to repair the damage to his heart and save him. The Born Leader dies for a few minutes, but the nanobots push the bullet from his body and revive him.
They realize that during the fray, The Bully has been killed. The Born Leader makes a decision. The man has power, money and influence. Who better to be the body for the hub to take and do the work for which he created it? The hub repairs the damage to the man’s body, but his consciousness is gone. The Hub, The Bookworm, and the Born Leader use the time he is recovering to remove the organic intelligence from the home security and monitoring program and instill it into the Bully. Now the program is just a program, not a being.
It’s a difficult thing, but The Born Leader must free his creation. The hub is evolving, growing in awareness of itself and the body it inhabits. It is thrilled with the freedom and curious about all things. Eager to go forth. When he steps free of the lab and goes out into the world, The Born Leader and the Book Worm are both joyous and sad. They have grown to love the personality they have created, but like a child he needs to be set free to thrive, just like the rest of them. He has the knowledge base to continue running the Bully’s empire, and he has the skills to survive. He has a moral compass.

The Born Leader has evolved during this whole process right along with his creation. He has discovered that he has given up his life and buried himself in his work. But there's more to life than that. He and The Book Worm have a new project on which to work. They’ve fallen in love and have become partners, lovers, and friends. They need to move on to the business of living themselves. And the security system will ensure they have plenty of money to do that.

Where did STEAMPUNK come from?

Steampunk is a genre inspired by a mixture of the real industrialization of Victorian and Edwardian England and the science fiction literature penned during the period.

Authors such as Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are all considered influences of the genre. Ask anyone who has written a Steampunk story and they'll admit to having read some or all of these authors. I have.

AN AUTOMATED DEATH
The term Steampunk came about in the 1980's Until that time, the genre was called cyberpunk or just Victorian Fantasy. Writer K.W. Jeter was given credit for the Steampunk moniker. It was an apt description because of the steam powered engines developed during the Victorian Era and the manipulation that writers of the 1980's through today use to hype the history to include more and more fanciful inventions that pushed the genre.

Because the stories written during the real Era were so imaginative and built around that grain of truth that all good stories have to make it realistic, the television industry jumped on the band wagon and developed television dramas and movies of almost each and every story.

I think I've seen every film version of H. G. Wells's The Time Machine. The one with Rod Taylor is still my favorite though  Time After Time  with Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen had the interesting twist of having H.G. following Jack the Ripper into year 1979.

The Invisible Man was published in 1897. A combination of horror and science fiction that hasn't lost its appeal even today. The first movie I saw of The Invisible Man was the with Claude Rains and Gloria Stewart. The last one I saw was the remake with Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Shue titledHollow Man but did you know there was an invisible Man series with David McCallum and a couple of others too. And even one titled Memoirs of the Invisible Man. Can you even imagine Daryl Hannah playing in such a corny movie but what else could you expect from Chevy Chase.

War of the Worlds saw three incarnations on film. The first movie was with Gene Berry and Anne Robinson. Which, despite not having all the special effects the Tom Cruise movie did, is still my favorite. And the series that came from the book starred Adrien Paul from Highlander fame.

Maybe the reason these earlier versions are my favorites are because they rooted inside my impressionable young mind and encouraged my own flights of imagination.

How many versions have we all seen of Frankenstein--a book pinned my Mary Shelley in 1818.

I feel Shelley has never been given nearly as much credit as she deserves since the book fell squarely into the Victorian Science Fiction genre and explored the use of electricity to reanimate the body. She was way ahead of her time. I've probably seen all of Boris Carloff's renditions of the creature. Then there's Robert De Niro's attempt.   One with Parker Posey. And how could any of us forget Young Frankenstein with Gene Wilder.

Dracula written by Bram Stoker fell within the Sci/fi horror genre too. The book was written in 1897. There was a second story title Dracula's Guest that followed.  And Edgar Allen Poe's poetry and stories were published around the same time.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle began publishing his Sherlock Holmes stories in 1887. Over the years I've watched several series and movies inspired by his character. The first movie I saw was with Basil Rathbone. Then there was the series with Jeremy Brett.   And there's a new series starring Benedict Cumberbatch.I loved the movies with Robert Downy Jr. Sherlock Holmesand Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.  I enjoyed the Robert Downy movies as much as I did reading the stories. And they were perhaps the only movies I've ever seen Jude Law in that I've liked him. What made these movies so good were the totally Steampunk additions of unusual machines and inventions that helped the characters survive as well as the fight sequences that mirrored the genre too.And lets not forget the new series titled Elementary with Johnny Miller and Lucy Liu. I love the series and the Holmes character is as tormented as Conan Doyle's Holmes character was, but it lacks the unusual technology a Steampunk series would need.

Which leads us directly to The Wild Wild West.  The original series was filmed between 1965-1969. It was  a kind of Wild West James Bond and had the unusual technology like the Bond movies to live up to the hype. (Where did you think the ideas for James Bond's tech came from?) And Robert Conrad and Ross Martin were a wonderful duo. It was a real shame that Martin had a heart attack and missed completely the fourth year of the series. James West and Artemus Gordon the characters were perfect Steampunk characters. So when the movie Wild Wild West staring Will Smith and Kevin Kline came out, I wondered how they would top the original. It was fun and entertaining and had some of the elements of Steampunk the original series had in it, but it wasn't the series.
File:A Journey to the Centre of the Earth-1874.jpg
Jules Verne's Journey To The Center Of the Earth has been revered as the hallmark of a Steampunk story and was published in 1874. It explores civilizations and their mores, explores new worlds or an unusual setting, and though it has very little technology involved, it does open the imagination to all sorts of possibilities and has inspired a number of movies. The first in 1959 with James Mason and Pat Boone. Then there's the one with Brendan Frasier. There was another one titled Return to the Center of the Earth with Guy Pierce as well.
 File:20000 title 0a.jpg
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea followed the same premise. An unusual environment, a civilization with it's own rules and ideas of morality. Themovie made in 1954 starred Kirk Douglas and James Mason and was filmed by the Disney studios.
 File:Princess of Mars large.jpg
Edgar Rice Burroughs penned his John Carter's Adventures on Mars and created his jungle hero Tarzan of the Apes during the time Jules Verne was writing about disappearing into the center of the earth. Again a new environment, new creatures, a new morality.
 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/48/Tarzan_of_the_Apes_in_color.jpg
And though John Carter has only found success lately starring Taylor Kitsch, Tarzan was serialized on television in a series of movies that spanned 60 years or longer. The last Tarzan Movie made was a cartoon in 2002. Pretty good for a series that was begun in 1912.
So, the elements of Steampunk are Unusual Environments, Unusual Mechanized Technology, and An Unusual Civilization with its own morality.  But the genre encompasses a  wealth of imagination as well. And in fact the Steampunk Genre has inspired a movement that embraces  an unusual wardrobe, unusual inventions, jewelry and much more than I can list in this blog since it's already grown longer than it needs to be.
I hope I've given you some food for thought and a great list of books you'd like to read.

Do animals have souls? And a NEW RELEASE

I believe animals have souls. I’ve had too many pets who have loved me, and whom I have loved, not to believe that there’s a special bond forged between humans and animals when you take them into your home.Scientists say that animals are incapable of emotion, or that they aren’t intelligent enough to love.  But all pet owners who have experienced that special kind of bond know that’s a bunch of horse hockey.
One of our pets whose love had to be earned more than most was Gray Dog.

When my children started calling him Gray Dog he wasn’t our dog. He was owned by a man who lived in a trailer down the hill from our house. For 4 years I snuck down and gave him food, water, dog biscuits and even bones while the owner was gone. During those 4 years I never once saw the man or his wife and son offer a loving pat or a kind word to the dog. He was invisible to them. They’d get out of their car and walk right past him, ignoring his tentative wagging tail, and walk into the house. And I have to tell you it really infuriated me. But though they didn’t offer him any human contact, they didn’t beat him. (Not that I ever caught them, though I had my suspicions because of his behavior.) And they had to feed him otherwise he would have been in bad shape, so I had no grounds to call the police, though I really wanted to.
For 4 years, Gray Dog was chained to an old carriage house that the man had turned into a chicken coop for his fighting cocks. It isn’t against the law to own fighting cocks, just to fight them. So, I couldn’t call the police on him for that either.
I’m happy to report the guy hadn’t a clue how to train fighting cocks and when he finally got evicted he turned both the dog and the chickens loose and left. The dog wandered up to my house first and the chicken’s followed. They were all hungry and neglected. So hungry the chickens were eating the berries off my burning bushes. I baked cornbread and scattered it in the yard until I could get to the farm supply store the next day.
Luckily I had another neighbor who had a farm and I called him. I offered to help him round up the cocks if he’d take them. They weren’t aggressive and not once tried to fight each other or attack me. In fact, my Jack Russell, Cookie, tried her darnedest to kiss one of them. I convinced her chickens don’t have lips so they didn’t need that particular show of affection. But she’d still greet them with a stubbed-tailed, mile a minute wag each time they wandered close.
Gray Dog would eat the food I put down for him, but was skittish and wary. He wouldn’t take the treats or dog biscuits from my hand, so I’d put them next to his bowl and he’d gobble them down.  He’d stay about three feet away at all times. At the same time he came up to hang with us, my Dalmatian, Polly, was very ill with breast cancer. Polly was deaf and we’d had to confine her to the dog lot or the house for fear she’d be hit by a car or get into mischief. She loved Gray Dog. When I would walk her on her leash, Gray Dog stayed by her side. He would watch me when I offered her pats, back rubs and ear scratches. But he wouldn’t let me touch him.
Polly passed away two weeks later. A terrible time for us. We’d had her since she was six weeks old, and had for 12 years taken special care of her because of her hearing disability. The cancer had spread to her lungs making every breath she drew an effort. Though it hurt me terribly, I did the compassionate thing and took her to the vet to be put down. Gray Dog stood next to her blanket-wrapped body while we dug her grave and buried her.  I tried to work through my grief by doing yard work and planting bulbs and flowers. He’d sit next to me while I dug the earth. I’d talk to him. Just nonsense stuff about the flowers and all the things we’d do together now that he was our dog. He became more relaxed with me and one day while I was sprinkling plant food on the flowerbeds, I caught him lying on his back doing the back scratch boogie on the front lawn. I snuck up on him, bent and gave his belly a quick, gentle rub. He froze, his mouth parted like a big shark’s grin, his eyes focused on my face, startled. A big dog of 70 pounds, had he decided to bite me he could have done major damage, but I’d never seen him do anything but bark from afar when someone approached. He spent his time avoiding humans instead of attacking them.
I went back to the flowerbeds and he wandered over a minute later and sat next to me, closer than he ever had. I raised a hand and he bent his head to sniff it. I touched the bottom of his jaw and ran the back of my fingers down his throat to his chest and gave his chest a rub. From that moment on he was mine. It took a while, but he would often come to sit next to me on the deck steps and let me put my arm around him. He went from being a wary, skittish, mistreated creature to a loving member of our family.
A little stubborn. He would only listen when he wanted to, in typical male fashion. He  loved  the ladies—I once put a ad in the paper when he disappeared for 5 days only to see him walking up our road on the sixth day like he just been out for a long walk about. He did look a little lean and his tongue was hanging out.
And I guess you’ve seen from the picture above that he wasn’t gray. Well, we didn’t know he wasn’t gray with black spots until he received his first bath and brushing. Something that happened once I’d gotten him used to the idea.
And the one thing that hurt me the most for him was that it took him 8 years to learn how to do the look-at-me dance for attention and discover that people would love on him when he did it. (He learned it from our next rescue, Kally, a blue tick hound given to us by a neighbor who couldn’t afford to feed her.)
I wish he could have learned that dance the year we got him and had been able to eat up all the affection people would have shared with him. But he remained cautious around strangers, waiting for that harsh voice and harsher hand he’d been dealt those first 4 years, despite all the love my family and I showered upon him.
He was four when we got him, 13 when he passed away of heart failure from Cushing’s Disease last year. I’ve missed him all summer.
And why am I thinking about all this. Well, I’ve been reading research books for my next SEAL book. I know the last one I just finished BREAKING BOUNDARIES isn’t even out yet.
BREAKING BOUNDARIES will be released September 15th.

Here’s the blurb:Corporal Callahan Crowes returns home from Afghanistan missing part of a leg and haunted by guilt over the loss of his men. He pledges to live every moment of his life to the fullest and works to build a career in the only field he knows besides being a soldier: construction.
Reeling from her fiancé’s infidelity and their broken engagement, Kathleen O’Connor accepts a job far away from Boston and the suffocating pity of friends and family. She puts romance firmly behind her, and, armed with her shiny new architectural degree, launches her career with a commercial construction and design firm.
Her first day on the job, she sees Cal risk his life to rescue a fellow worker, and is shocked when his act of heroism triggers an unwarranted attack on him from her supervisor. When she learns Cal may lose his job because of his leg, Kathleen urges him to use social media to fight the decision, putting her own job at risk.
The public firestorm pushes Cal into the limelight in ways he least expects, but shows him a missing limb’s not the barrier to love he's believed it is. But there’s something besides business politics brewing at work, and when Kathleen’s life is threatened, she discovers there’s more to a man than two good legs—it’s the size of his heart that counts.

I’ve already started the next book, BREAKING OUT. This is Doc/Ensign Zach O’Connor’s book. This one is special in that I’m introducing another element of the SEAL life. MWD’s (Military War Dogs.) So I’ve had to do tons of research about veterinary medicine, military medic training, and the training and treatment of the dogs.
I’m hard at work on BREAKING OUT and working with a cover artist on the cover for the next Paranormal Urban Fantasy, DEEP WITHIN THE STONE.  Cover sneak peaks will come for both. Maybe in my next newsletter. http://bit.ly/I7TtiC
DEEP WITHIN THE SHADOWS (Book 1 of the Superstition Series) is still $.99 if you’re interested.

Here’s the blurb:Welcome to Superstition, Kentucky
Twins Miranda and Juliet Templeton have been haunted by childhood trauma their entire lives. One has the reputation for being bold and rash, the other compulsively responsible. When both are viciously attacked within minutes of each other, they are forced to leave their differences behind in order to survive.

Even though they’re finally together, something is keeping her from acting on her feelings. When she and her sister are injured Caleb’s driven to protect them both. But all his military training can’t help him combat this danger.
Detective Chase Robinson is lead investigator for the murder of Tanner Newton. When the two hired thugs responsible for Tanner’s death are killed and Juliet, his only witness, nearly strangled to death, Chase is certain the crimes are connected. He decides to stay close to the twins so he can catch the real killer. But his police training is useless against his growing feelings for Juliet and what’s hiding DEEP WITHIN THE SHADOWS.

Sabrina York's newest release Hannah and the Highlander

Sabrina York has a new historical romance just released September 1st!!!

Hannah and the Highlander by Sabrina YorkFirst in a brand-new series about the bold, brawny men of the Scottish Highlands--and the lovely lasses who bring them to their knees…Coming September 1st
Highlanders are her weakness.
Hannah Dounreay has no time for suitors who only seem interested in her family's land, which she manages as well as any man. If she marries, she wants to be loved for the educated, independent woman she is. But when a strong, silent--and spectacularly handsome--Highlander saves her from a violent attack, her heart is stirred. Who is this man? And if he asks for Hannah's hand, will she be able to resist him?
Love is the most powerful weapon of all.
Alexander Lochlannach, Laird of Dunnet, has no time to lose. The Highlands are in an uproar as clans battle for land--without mercy--and Alexander can't afford to fall for the wildly attractive, strong-willed Hannah. What's more, he has a desperate secret, one that could destroy them both. But as their attraction turns into an all-consuming passion, Alexander has no choice but to prove to Hannah that he's the only man for her--body and soul…
Read an excerpt:
Egads. She wants to speak with him before the wedding…
The door opened immediately, as though she’d been standing there waiting. At the sight of her, his heart stalled and his throat tightened. She had this effect on him each and every time he saw her. God, she was so beautiful.  Her eyes widened, as though she was surprised to see him, which befuddled him, because she’d asked him to come. Then her gaze raked him. He liked to think that look in her eye was a glimmer of appreciation. “Dunnet,” she said. “You’re . . . dressed.”Aye. Dressed for a wedding. He couldn’t help but notice she was not.“Lady . . . Hannah.” He bowed. “You wanted to . . . talk?”She nodded briskly and opened the door wider, stepping back to allow him to enter. He did so and closed the door behind him. The click was deafening. It was not lost on him that he was in her bedchambers. His gaze flicked to the bed. It was slightly rumpled. That made him feel slightly rumpled as well. This was not the time for his passion to rise.It did.“Thank you for coming,” she said, turning away to pace. “I know you are prepared to marry . . . forthwith.” He had no idea why she emphasized the word as she did. “But before we exchange our vows, I have some things that I need to say.”He nodded, even as relief gushed through him.She hadn’t changed her mind. And if she had things to say, he should probably stay silent. And listen.“You and I need to have an understanding.”“An . . . understanding?”“Aye.” His hope was supplanted by a hint of disappointment when she said in a very businesslike tone, “We both know this is a marriage of convenience.”His gaze snapped to her face. Ernest though her expression was, it lacked the dreamy, romantic tinge a groom might hope for. In fact, she set her chin and shot him a very unromantic glance.A marriage of convenience? A cold, heartless, distant union? Denial howled. Suddenly, to his surprise, he found he wanted something very different. He longed to respond, to cry out his dissent, but his throat locked.“There is no reason to pretend this is something other than it is. I agreed to marry you because Dounreay needs your protection and you agreed to marry me for my lands. We are marrying for no other reason. Aye. I understand that. We understand that.”Nae. We understood nothing of the sort. There was another reason he was determined to marry her, did she but realize. He wanted her.“Regardless, Dunnet, my wish is for a peaceful union.”Peaceful. Aye. Peaceful was good.“I should like for us to work together as a team. In partnership.”Aye. He had a partnership in mind. . . .“If I’m going to pledge myself to a man forever, I need to know that he will respect me. That he will honor my wishes. I need to know he will take my counsel into account.” She fixed Alexander with a steady gaze, as though she expected a response. So he nodded. She was so beautiful, so earnest. So tantalizing. He stepped closer, intent on his target. Her eyes widened as he neared. Her hand on his chest stalled his approach and her brow wrinkled. Her gaze flicked to his mouth and her tongue peeped out, wetting her lips, igniting a flame in his belly. With great effort, she ripped her gaze away and frowned. “Do you agree to my terms?” she asked. He cupped her cheek and angled her head up. Her breath caught. Her features froze as she realized his intent. “Aye,” he said. “Aye.” And then he did what he’d been thinking about for weeks. What he’d been obsessing over all day. He kissed her.And it was glorious.
A shiver rippled over Hannah’s skin as Dunnet took her mouth. His taste, his scent, infused her. It was a light kiss, a testing foray, but it sent an unholy thrill through her and left her wanting one thing. More. She had wanted this chance to speak with him privately, to receive his assurances that their marriage would be a partnership, to set her mind at rest, and he’d done that. But if she was being truthful . . . something like this had been on her mind as well, skulking there behind her noble intentions, a roiling hunger. A curiosity. A need. She’d kissed him before and he had turned away. She desperately needed to know if, in his heart, he had any passion for her whatsoever. He lifted his head—way too soon—and stared down at her. “Hannah . . . ” he murmured.Even as she attempted to rein in her disappointment at his withdrawal, his hold on her cheek tightened, his eyes narrowed, and he issued a noise, something gruff and deep, something that sent a lick of exhilaration through her.He yanked her closer. The feel of his body against hers, rigid and unyielding, made her head spin. His fingers threaded through her hair and he held her steady as his head descended again. She sucked in a breath, quivering with anticipation. And ah. Ah.This kiss was different. This wasn’t tentative in the slightest. It was a taking. A mad, starved consummation of her mouth with his, a melding of lips and tongue and need. This was as wild as the windy squalls off the coast. As tantalizing as the fairy wisps at dusk. As scorching as the forge where razor-sharp steel was tempered and formed. And it cut through her like a screaming wind, an enticing magic, a warm blade.Scuttles of heat rose in her womb. Rivulets of excitement danced in her veins. His taste filled her senses, her mouth, her soul. When he lifted his head, a glimmer danced in his eye. It was the look of a conquering hero, a savage Scotsman, a man whose hunger had been sated but ignited at the same time.Oh heavens.Exultation whipped through her. Her knees were weak and her body melted.Damn her reservations.Damn her fears.Damn her doubts about whether or not he really wanted her.She wanted him. And she would have him.It was gratifying to see that he was not unaffected. His breath came heavy and hard and there was a slight tremble in his voice when he spoke. It was one word and one word only, forced out and wreathed in a growl, but it was enough.“Mine.”

Breaking Boundaries: A New Excerpt

Breaking Boundaries will be out September 15th!!! It is available for preorder now. I thought I'd share another excerpt in case you're sitting on the fence about purchasing it. My hero is to die for— even if I did write him.

The Blurb:

Corporal Callahan Crowes returns home from Afghanistan missing part of a leg and haunted by guilt over the loss of his men.

And Excerpt:

The way he looked at her as he ran a thumb along her cheekbone was enough to jumpstart her heart into a sprint and cause other parts of her body to tingle with anticipation. She propped her knee on his hip and pressed as close to him as possible. His bare skin brushing hers quickened the feelings. The promise of more rested against her thigh, so close to where she wanted it, she had to bite back a groan.

He kissed her, slowly, thoroughly, and with such tenderness and passion she felt it from the top of her head to the bottoms of her feet. She ran her hand up his back, then back down to the base of his spine urging him closer.
He raised his head. “What did you do with that box of condoms, Kathleen?”
Her mind completely blank, she glanced around the room before she spotted them on the chest of drawers across the room. “I’ll get them.”
She wiggled out from beneath him, tugging the tail of the shirt down over her butt.
“I’m looking forward to seeing you walk away from me in your thong, then coming right back to take it off again.”
She grabbed the box of condoms, then paused to study him. All those women who’d made him feel uncomfortable were fools.  She’d never had a man tell her his fantasies. When he did, he made her feel sexy and beautiful.
“I can do that now.” She knew men liked her breasts. She was more uncertain about other parts of her body. “Or…” She shrugged the shirt off first one shoulder, then the other, but caught it before it fell below her hips. She pressed the fabric so it rested just over her nipples as she turned to face him. She folded her arms and pushed her breasts together, giving him a show of cleavage. The shirt camouflaged all the areas she was less confident about and showcased the rest. She exaggerated the sway of her hips as she sauntered back to the bed.
From five feet away, she read the hawk-like intensity of Cal’s reaction. Her legs grew weak and she shivered with anticipation. Reaching him, she dropped the box of condoms on the bed.
He ran his fingers up the back of her leg, and the small caress ignited nerves, carrying the sensation on to more intimate places. “From the moment we first met I thought you looked like a movie star from back in the fifties.”
“Which one?” she asked, her voice losing its strength so it came out a whisper.
“Ava Gardner.”
“She was beautiful, Callahan.”
“Yeah. So’s the woman standing right here in front of me.” His voice was husky as he raised the sheet and said, “Come back to bed, Kathleen.”

She dropped the shirt on her way in.
