Jacob Zuma's Panem et Circenses - Brett Murray and the "Spear of the Nation" Painting

This week, news and politics have focused on Brett Murray's "The Spear of the Nation" painting at the  Goodman Gallery. The ANC was shocked and polygamous President Jacob Zuma felt hurt and surprised  at being portrayed as a "philanderer and womaniser" so much so that  the ANC has even filed a case in the High Court to  try and get the painting banned and all photos of it taken off from sites on the world wide web. In the meantime the painting itsef was vandalised by three people who apparently did n't know each other. What appears to most is that the ANC is trying to take atttention away from its problems of non-delivery, corruption and bad governement and letting the frustrated masses vent their anger instead on a painting that would have unlikely got publicity otherwise.

Zapiro's cartoon based on the Latin metaphor panem et circenses) meaning superficial means of appeasement. Wikipedia goes on to say It was the basic Roman formula for the well-being of the population, and hence a political strategy unto itself. In the case of politics, the phrase is used to describe the creation of public approval, not through exemplary or excellent public service or public policy  but through diversion, distraction, and/or the mere satisfaction of the immediate, shallow requirements of a populace. The phrase also implies the erosion or ignorance of civic duty amongst the concerns of the common man

False labelling of West Bank products as Made in Israel

South African Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said that South Africa  wanted products made in the Palestinian territories to be labelled "Made in Palestine.". Products manufactured in the occupied Palestinian territories, and sold in South Africa, should be labelled to indicate their place of origin,  A number of products  entering South Africa were labelled as "products of Israel", even though they were actually products of the occupied territories."

Painting of Jacob Zuma with his genitals exposed creates an uproar

The Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg and the City Press newspaper displayed a Brett Murray painting  of President Jacob Zuma with his genitals exposed, which has upset the ANC and has  divided public opinion in the country.  Taken aback by what they saw as a  ”distasteful and vulgar” work of art, representatives of the ANC including

Jackson Mthembu

and

Mac Maharaj

asked the Goodman to remove the painting from the exhibition, their website, and all other promotional materials on the grounds that it insulted the dignity of the presidency. President Jacob Zuma himself says he was “shocked, and felt personally offended and violated” when he saw a copy of artist Brett Murray’s painting The Spear for the first time.  He says The painting depicts him as “a philanderer, a womaniser and one with no respect”. Zapiro's cartoon says if Zuma wants respect he should earn it.  Zapiro's cartoon has taken the Brett Murray's painting to another level. - A shower below the belt!

The Leadership Challenge and the Showerman Show

Due to outdated codes, traditions and rituals governing the elections of the ANC president, challengers are often afraid to announce their canditure. The opacity, secrecy and lack of transparency in internal ANC elections open the system to manipulation, corruption and the abuse. It also raises the possibility of selective prosecutions to sideline rivals.  While  Jacob Zuma and Gwede Mantashe have banned all public talk about the leadership succession in the party, saying such talk is premature. Reality showws every political manoeuvre by the ANC leadership now is aimed at influencing the direction of the party’s leadership election at the 2012 national elective conference in Bloemfontein (Mangaung).  Now who are the challengers? Zapiro's cartoon lists:

Jellyman (Kgalema Motlanthe) - Weakness no backbone - Motlanthe, who was initially reluctant to challenge Zuma, has now told his comrades in the ANC and government that he is interested in the position. Motlanthe has kept his distance, at least publicly, from those campaigning for ANC President . Hiis presence at a rally organised by the ANC Youth League in Limpopo in March created the impression he did not mind being associated with a group campaigning for change. On the otherhand he has n't had the guts to announce his candidature.

Invisible Man (Cyril Ramphosa) - Does n't show up - Will Cyril Ramaphosa step up to the Presdential plate or is it a question of not IF but WHEN. Is he waiing for the right time. Back in 1994 he could have been made Mandela’s deputy president but at that stage lost out to Mbeki and withdrew from active politics but remained in the ANC's NEC.

Too cocky man (Tokyo Sexwale) - His annoying sidekick jujuman - Most of the Sunday papers have reported that  unofficial challnger Tokyo Sexwale’s campaign – the unofficial one of course – was  finally getting off the ground.

The original cartoon that was published in the Times had a mistake. The label on Invisible Man was left out.  Sometimes there are deliberately little mysteries in a cartoon and it’s intriguing for the reader to work them out. But sometimes the cartoonist leaves something out by mistake because of a looming deadline and the cartoon loses a key piece of information. That’s what happened today.

The Cartoon is based on a parody of  The Avengers, which is a team of superheroes, appearing in magazines published by Marvel Comics.
