Ludwick Mamabolo wins Comrades Marathon in 2012

Limpopo-born Ludwick Mamabolo wins 87th Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban and became the first South African in seven years to achieve this feat. The last South African runner to win was Sipho Ngomane in 2005. Running the gruelling 89 kilometres race for the third time in his career, the 35-year-old South African upset the more favoured Stephen Muzhinghi of Zimbabwe, who was bidding for a fourth successive crown, and record holder Leonid Shvetsov of Russia on his way to victory.

South African Film and Publications Board gives Brett Murray's 'The Spear' a no under 16 age restriction

The imposition of an age restriction on artist Brett Murray's painting The Spear by the South African Film and Publication Board draws criticism in Zapiro's cartoon. The board slapped a 16N age restriction for nudity on the painting, showing President Jacob Zuma with exposed genitals. "Nudity has always been depicted in art. Everyone has done nudes especially the calssical artists such as Michelangelo.

Daily Maverick: Films and Provocations Board: An institution's folly - Following the Film and Publications Board’s decision to slap a “no 16 years or younger” restriction on electronic or other images of Brett Murray’s controversial painting, The Spear, J BROOKS SPECTOR contemplates the decision in terms of the board’s responsibilities as well as its larger meaning in a wired world.

Defeat for Freedom of Expression - The case of Brett Murray's Spear

After weeks of confrontation over a controversial painting depicting President Jacob Zuma with genitals exposed, the ANC and Jacob Zuma have succeed by using bullying and stalinst tacticts to get City Press to back down  and to pressurise the Goodman Gallery to submit.  Brett Murray, was also party to the deal to defuse the deep anger nationwide over "The Spear," a work of art that made South Africa’s consensus look frighteningly fragile. The ANC might be able to scare the City Press into removing The Spear, but cannot do anything to the thousands of other sites that have posted the image, or to the people that have shared it on social networks or emailed it to their friends.

How to silence the voices of patriotic dissent - BRETT Murray, in his affidavit this week, attempts to explain why he painted The Spear. Before he begins with an exposition of what informs his art, Murray opens with one of the saddest lines of the new South Africa: "At the outset, I would like to say that I am a proud South African and a former supporter of the ANC. I am not a racist."
