Often if I back up one scene I can figure out where I went wrong.

If I'm not sure where to take the story next, I get out pen and paper and make a list of my character's options and the pros and cons of each. Usually one idea on the list will strike me as being more fun or "right". Sometimes, I combine two options.(less)

Strong beginning with a blizzard and a creepy forest, but the middle was meh and frustrating, full of dead ends. The climax picked up the pace again, but the ending was too dreary.
