"Dirty Girl" Culture; Feminism or Self-Disrespect?
A couple of week's ago CNN had a special on the increasingly familiar phenomena of a "Dirty Girl" culture; a culture in which "rude, crude, and sometimes very, very drunk" behavior isn't only encouraged in young women but is celebrated.
Take a look at the video here.
To be fair, an opposing point of view can be read in this article by Jaclyn Friedman.
As usual, I want to let you guys debate this issue via the Friday poll. I'll just say this; no one else will respect you in this life unless you f...

Thursday Night Write
Time for another edition of Thursday Night Write! You know the rules; post your writing excerpt of up to 300 words or less and be sure to comment at least one other entry.
And now, for something a little different!
Today is a very big day for birthday's in the blogosphere. I've been so fortunate to have an incredible group of fans and supporters, and I HAVE to take the time to wish them a happy birthday!
First, a HUGE Happy Birthday to friend and review blogger, Adele of Persnickety Snark. I've ...

Nine Inch Nails and Johnny Cash
A conversation on my daughter's Facebook wall that included my son, a couple of other teenagers, and my cousin, Brian Baker (who also happens to be a writer), prompted me to remember the incredible song HURT.
The original was written and performed by Nine Inch Nails and was later covered by Johnny Cash, but I have to confess that I can never decide which one I like best. I adore both of these versions for different reasons. So interesting, isn't it, how different artists can take the same song ...

Bisexuality, True Colors, and the Heart of a Child
Happy Monday, guys! This week's Anonymous Teen Reader is Discreetnessity. I love the image she chose to represent her interview. It's beautiful but dark, too.
Anyway, like so many of my Anonymous Teen Readers, Dicreetnessity is a complex, insightful individual. I appreciate her honesty in this interview, because I think a lot of teenagers suffer from feelings of depression but so few really want to talk about it.
And sometimes, just knowing you're not alone can make the biggest difference.

And I hope you will forget things I still lack…
Haven't put up something by my favorite band in awhile. This one suits my mood for some reason. Lyrics follow. Because as incredible as the music is in any Brand New song, there's not a band out there that can hold a candle to their lyrics.
Was losing all my friends
Was losing them to drinking and to driving
Was losing all my friends but I got them back
I am on the mend
At least now I can say that I am trying
And I hope you will forget things I still lack
Yeah
Yeah
Is it in you now?
To bear to...

Nolan + DiCaprio + Zimmerman = Cinematic Genius
I had to suspend my Friday poll to give you guys a glimpse of the upcoming movie, Inception. Directed by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) and featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, this movie has me so excited I'm literally counting the days until it's release.
Plus, Hans Zimmer did the music.
What more could anybody ask for?

Thursday Night Write
Happy Thursday everybody, and welcome to Thursday Night Write!
I've been a bit stressed out with writing and life, and I tend to withdraw when that happens. Sorry if I left you guys hanging this week! I've been a little MIA…
Anyway, you know the rules; give yourselves no more than 30 minutes to write something – anything – based on the prompt at left. Then, post no more than 500 words of it for comment here on the TNW community. And don't forget to comment at least one other entry if you post o...

More Than This
I had such a great time at the Hudson Book Festival today! Thanks to everyone who came out to see me, the coordinators and volunteers who gave us a fantastic event, and all the authors and illustrators who made it so much fun.
I'm so tired, though! So, I'm leaving you with a nice, mellow flashback to enjoy Saturday/Sunday…
Mwah!

Friday Poll; Jersey Shore
I have a confession to make; I've never seen an episode of Jersey Shore. The little I know about I learned from (Nerd Alert!) CNN.
But when I asked my followers on Facebook to give me some topics for the Friday poll, it seemed like a topic teenagers were interested in debating. So, I looked up some episodes and the series trailer – all in the name of research, of course – and had to agree this would make for an, er, lively topic.
It's oh-so-difficult for me to be even moderately discreet about ...

Thursday Night Write – Open Mic
You know what I love? That I have blog followers who actually REMIND me when I forget to post something!
That's right, I almost committed the sacrilege of all sacrileges and forgot Open Mic. But then I got a comment from Ayla, and I was like, "D'oh!"
Anyway, here it is, guys! Same rules; 300 words or less of your poem, short story, script, song, or novel. Comment someone else's piece if you leave one of your own. We've had some incredible samples these past couple of weeks. I've SO enjoyed...
